This will upgrade your modem from either DI18 or EB13 to EC05.....
Flash this in CW and your good to go.
ALL Credit goes to Randy_T at Bonsai, he is the coding genius behind this script I modded slightly, sprinkled in some Autism Awareness and created a .zip for use on ANY ROM.
Enjoy....

If I didn't find using Odin so easy and not updated already I would have given this a shot. Great that users are getting so many different options. The Devs for the Epic are rocking as of late!
Is there a specific version of CM I should use for this? I have flashed it a couple times and it seems to work but when my phone reboots I am still on EB13.

No it doesn't matter which CW you use. What does the baseband version read? Under settings/about phone look for baseband. What's the version number.
is this going to wipe the data on the phone?

Well, looking at the script, it checks a variable in the build.prop of the rom (located in the system folder) to see what it should update, so I guess it depends on if the rom is based on EB13, or if it is based on a newer/older version.
If, say for instance, the rom is based on DK28 (or EC05), even though the modem is EB13 (possibly updated through Odin, or even from stock EB13), the script will see your phone having the DK28 (or EC05) modem and not update it.
The only way I see to get by this is if the script is altered to check for a DI18 rom, and flash the DI18->EC05 update; and if it isn't a DI18 rom, assume it has the EB13 modem and flash the EB13->EC05 update. In which case, if the phone doesn't have the EB13 modem, it wouldn't work anyway (right?), and no harm done.
So, if this is your case, I would try flashing the other, specific, EB13->EC05 modem update.zip.

Is there any way to get from DK28 modem to EC05 without Odin? I don't have access to any computers that run Odin or Heimdall correctly.
yes i just posted a cwm zip that will update it using redbend_ua

I believe it doesn't make a difference if running rfs or ext4, as this upgrades/patches the modem while in CWM. But, in your case (running ext4), you have to be running an EB13 rom with the EB13 modem for it to work.

For those who removed stock files/apps and can't update with the normal update, here's a modified version that will work for you.
This update will not trash your recovery or root. You do not need a stock kernel for this update.
It will restore the required stock files/apps and update your modem from DI07 to DI18.
Update to DI18 - flashes new DI18 kernel
md5: ebfe0a1d4e59819a1fa35ff115f2b1b2
Update to DI18 - keeps existing kernel
md5: c686afd641f502bc88fc79796500592c
It's been tested on my phone and a few others and confirmed to be working. This also removes mobileAP i9000 modifications fully and restores stock build.prop (so you won't get the fingerprint assert).
DEODEXED ROM BELOW
Stock DI18 Deodexed FULL ROM update v3
This is a FULLY STOCK deodexed DI18 ROM update.zip! Flash with clockworkmod and you will get the -full- DI18, kernel and modem from DI18. It is not pre-rooted.
md5: f23c9fce3304145f0e8665a97dd1b863
Stock DI18 Deodexed FULL ROM update v3 *no kernel or modem*
md5: a54036b554b4ae8df20e5f685a88fcbd
Changes:
v3 - fix phone and camera FCs (thanks noobnl!)
v2 - removes existing .odex files and clears your dalvik-cache to solve FCs with various apps. If you flashed v1, you can fix it without reflashing
v1 - initial release
Use One click root 2.2.5 to root this ROM (w/ superuser support). I may post a pre-rooted ROM later.
*Additional Notes*
If you're on a fully stock ROM, then you don't need my update and can use the official Samsung DI18 update
Standalone DI18 modem updater, works regardless of what modem/baseband you have installed - md5: 4f897cf5a82d11926be68bd2594d0cf3
Standalone DI18 kernel updater, will flash stock DI18 kernel - md5: bb057a476af2e236cc34224c8b537226
Bluetooth will break if using non-DI18-based kernels. Upload speeds will not improve without a DI18-based kernel.
Just what I need thanks bro

Works like a charm. However, speeds didn't improve for me, and now it says my build is Tha Boss Rom - MixUp kernel. Even though I've never installed/flashed Boss. Nice work either way.
Thank you, this worked perfectly!
Does it work with themed roms?
Just installed the update, and everything seems to be working fine. Is the Firmware version still supposed to read "2.1-update1"?

Installing just the MixUp kernel will make it read that - the kernel was made custom for that ROM.

I'm gonna make a second version that also updates your kernel, since this update did actually bring a new kernel. But many of you probably wanna stick with your custom kernel, so I'll just offer both up.

Quick question. I've flashed modems before when installing a rom (like any of the i9000 kernels) but was wondering if that modem stays when I flash a rom like, Cognition. Are there times when the modem stays? If I flashed to, I think it was JG8 to get HSUPA with an i9000 kernel, if I decide to go back to the CogKernel, do I have to swap out the modem again?

Download the stock DI18 rom from http://www.sdx-downloads.com/devs/noobnl/stock.epic.DI18.rom.update.zip and move to sdcard
Flashable .zip - You can flash this alternatively Flashable DK28.zip after wiping you phone and flash any DK28 Rom you wish instead of the steps below
Make a nandroid and wipe data/cache 3 times and flash the stock rom and reboot
reboot, go back into clockwork and flash the update.zip for 2.2.1
All you gotta do is flash. I havent tested it myself[in the process] but just wanted to share the info with other who dont trust odin
I take no credit but all goes to noobnl and Firon for the flashable modem

You MUST Odin to DI18 modem to update your modem successfully. Alternatively, use Odin to flash the DK28 modem.
There is no update.zip that can flash you back to DI18 modem!

Thanks for posting this - I'm downloading the stock.epic.DI18.rom.update.zip right now. You guys rock!
Awesome, thanks Zei for this. I was looking for a way to avoid Odin. Three quick questions:
1 - I'm on DI18 (baseband S700.0.5S.DI18), but not quite stock - I have the deodexed DI18 installed, but no custom ROM). Will this method work for me?
2 - In your link for the stock DI18 ROM in the first post, I'm assuming you're talking about downloading the first file in the linked thread (there are 4 downloadable files in the first post in the linked thread)
3 - What's the best way to restore data after this process - I've made many nandroid backups but never had to restore - can I do a custom nandroid restore and restore just user app data? Should I do a Titanium backup/restore for data?
I wouldn't restore data from Eclair to Froyo... likely will lead to endless force closes and errors.

1. Id flash the stock rom for just in case purposes. No need todo any extra work for no reason
2. Yes, the 1st link is the correct link
3. TBH, I wouldnt recommend a nandroid data restore for this. Seeing as this is a brand spanking new rom I wouldnt risk it then have to start the process over again. Titainium Backup is the safest way togo for now
Thanks to all the Devs who worked on this.

Sweet Ill test it right now.....
I'm gonna make this short and simple.
I've got a stock Infuse 4G on 2.3.6 and I have no idea how to root it.
To my knowledge, SOC does not work.
How do I go about rooting my phone?
This might have already been answered, but I can't find a thread concerning it. A link would be appreciated, if possible.
with a kernel switcheroo. you need a non secure kernel to root it, fortunately the Rogers 2.3.3 kernels do boot 2.3.6. flash an older custom kernel like the hellraiser kernel through heimdall, I suggest heimdall just because its easier to extract a kernel zimage from an update than to do that but then create a .tar.md5 archive of it. you can use the ever popular entropy DD kernel but if you go back to the 2.3.6 kernel then you will have to change the vold.fstab back to stock.
the kernel flash may root the phone depending on the kernel but its an older su binary and if you update it the kernel will overwrite it on next boot.
if you want to use a custom kernel permanently then use entropy DD because it has had the root script removed allowing updates to su. though it doesn't root it will allow root through adb so soc may work after you flash that kernel. then you can update the binary through superuser
if you are gonna use the stock 2.3.6 kernel then use an old build of entropy or an old hellraiser kernel. then boot up and flash the 2.3.6 kernel back to the phone through heimdall or sgs kernel flasher. (sgs Kernel flash has the ability to find the zimage inside of a .zip or. tar even in subfolders so you can actually put the leak .tar on the SD card and flash the kernel that way if you can't figure out heimdall)
Thanks for the quick response. I'll try it tomorrow since it looks like it may take a while...

andrew,
did you bought the phone with stock 2.3.6 installed? what version is it? uckl2?
did you flash it with one of the unofficial GB leaks?

ohh almost forgot about voodoo. the custom kernels convert the files system and wont allow you to flash the stock kernel, you'll get bootloops. if you don't intend to keep the custom kernel disable lagfix before you start by creating a folder with the path /sdcard/Voodoo/disable-lagfix
the V in Voodoo is capital. all other letters are lower case.
read the Rogers root thread for more details. its the same process laid out for rogers since that thread was written before soc worked on anything above 2.3.2. actually that kernel will also work on 2.3.6 for att.

yes but if he is already on gingerbread he needs a backup gingerbread kernel, if he uses cwm for the gb kernel it must already be on the SD card.
so it would be
1. download cwm flashable gb kernel to the SD card
2. download heimdall defuse kernel oneclick to PC and install drivers, I haven't done this on windows in a while but the Samsung drivers should work but heimdall also has there own system to recognize the device. forgot what its called....
3 run heimdall from run in windows or terminal in other os and put phone in download mode and connect the data cable
4. flash defuse kernel
5. boot into recovery with 3button. phone wont boot gb on froyo kernel but recovery works.
6. flash root
7.flash gb kernel
8. reboot
9. win
I used to use the mismatched kernels on the captivate. if nothing else was working I'd go back to stock 2.1, flash a froyo kernel with cwm and then flash a froyo or gb rom. 3 easy steps.
Rooting 2.3.6
Simply use the Heimdall Defuse Kernel to flash red cwm then flash the rooted version of the ROM Or a custom rom. it pre-roots your phone for you just click flash

that's too bad- I already have my stock file backed up with twrp... no need to reflash whole firmware.
I thought the recovery used to back up modem file as well? or am I mistaken?

I think you have to specify to backup the modem.
Keep this updated if you do get a hold of a flashable modem. I'm in the spot and would like to reflash the stock modem.
