Black screen in ClockworkMod - HTC Inspire 4G

I have CM7 installed and when I reboot into recovery, the HTC logo comes up for a second and then just fades away into blackness...and nothing else happens.
ROM Manager says ClockworkMod version 3.0.0.6 and it said flash successful when I flashed it.
Something I am doing wrong?

I used the Simple OneClick root method and encountered the same thing. Using the Fixes button in that program said it was a common occurrence and that flashing ENG S-OFF would solve it. I did and it did. YMMV

You don't need to flash eng s-off.
You could revert back to stock and run the hack kit, instead of doing eng s-off.

Or you could click the Fixes button and let it do it for you. It may not be the preferred method but it worked for me where the Hack kit did not.

It is by far not the preferred method, and is one of the easiest ways to completely brick this phone(if you mess up). There is absolutely no reason to eng s-off the phone. You can just as easily revert the phone back to stock, then run the hack kit to do it properly.

ENG S-OFF makes me nervous, especially letting a tool automatically do it for me. No way to flash Clockwork via a different method or anything?
Also, I noticed in HBOOT I cant control anything with the volume buttons. Is this a know bug also?

you can completely return back to stock and run the Ace Hack Kit

Do I NEED Clockwork?
I have been using my phone for a while without it, and worst case scenario I can always use HBOOT to restore the stock rooted ROM.
So other than not being able to manually flash, whats the point?

If ENG S-off makes you nervous then reverse it, I had eng S-off and tried a few radio's but found that the AT&T radio worked just fine so I reversed it. If you did the one click s-off to do it you should have three files it put on your SD card, one would say original Hboot, if they are on it then you can reverse it if not then you have to do something else.
Let's say they are there, then you need to go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855403
Halfway down the first post in a grey box is the command that you need to input through terminal emulator on your phone, once you do it, it will say a number in and a number out, when it is done exit the emulator and you have reversed Eng S-off. It is very simple and quick to do but will only work if you have those files on your SD Card.

You can flash/backup/restore any rom using rom manager with no eng s-off. CWM is doing its work even with the black screen, Just let it do the job, it takes about 3 min for rom flashing and 5 min for backup/restore and then the phone reboots normally.
If you're eng s-off and want to take it back to s-off there is an easy way to do it and clean up the boot at same time. It is to flash this PD98IMG file using bootloader: http://www.google.com/url?q=http://...sntz=1&usg=AFQjCNFB5N69qN9TwX6vS7wvJQ7ZlSxiWw

I had this problem as well. the one click "fix" is what corrected it for me.
eng S-Off is NOT needed on this phone, but I did it anyway. I used the one click method as mentioned above... Clicked on fixes, click eng s-off, and all is well.
The program has a fail-safe built into it. It states MANY MANY MANY times during the root process that if a particular step fails, what to do, and where to start from again. It was great! ...Just saying...

Question: If you use this PD98IMG to take Eng S-Off and have backed up using Clockwork recovery mod, when you had the Eng S-Off when you restore, the clockwork file will the Eng S-Off come back or will it just be S- Off?

You can use the PD98IMG to turn off eng s-off, it will put you on a rooted stock rom. the PD98IMG flashes a new boot image, so you will have radio s-off hboot.
You can recover your rom after that.

Inspire 4G---crashed..pls help !!!!
Namaste,
I bought a new HTC Inspire 4G with android 2.3.3 gingerbread
then i root it using Ace Hack Kit aahk-13012012
the first time I ran hack kit, every thing went smoothly, but in the end, it was S-ON but it should have been S-OFF.
Then I try to run the kit again, but it wont go ahead and stops with the error saying "Radio Downgrade Failed: Either goldcard failed or usb connections not 100".
Next thing I try is that, I factory reset the phone, and try running the kit again....It runs smoothly till the point the screen is blank & it says "Radio downgrade complete - starting next process - please be patient..."...I wait for 1 hour, but nothing happens.
Then I Ctrl+C the Cmd and unplug the phone. The screen remains the same..
I removed the battery and try to start the phone.HTC logo appears and the fades away.
I reinsert the battery again and press volume down+power to see the following screen.

You DON'T need ENG S-OFF to make clockworkmod recovery working on HTC Inspire.

Looks like clockworkmod recovery is NOT-Compatible with Inspire's HBOOT version which is: HBOOT-0.85.0019
So when clockworkmod recovery is installed with this version of HBOOT it just displays a black screen (but it is actually working in the background but not displaying anything on the screen)
You can check the HBOOT version when you boot in HBOOT, 2nd line from the top:
ACE PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-0.85.0019 <--- this is the version being shipped with Inspire which doesn't work with clockworkmod recovery.
After you flash the downgraded DHD ROM on Inspire it downgrades the HBOOT to version: HBOOT-0.85.0007
This version of HBOOT seems to be compatible with clockworkmod recovery and worked for me.
I used Bubby's "Simple One Click" program released today (RC2), this is what I did:
Followed all the steps from FAQ until downgraded ROM was flashed. Then after running the gfree and sync commands, I exited out of the program by using ctrl+c (^C):
Next, type these commands (yes, "sync" is a command):
/data/local/gfree -f
sync
When complete, you can now exit the terminal on the phone.
CTRL+C at this message, this will exit out of the Dos command window.
Now on your PC click on <RUN> and type %TEMP% and click <OK>. This will open up the temporary directory where "Simple One Click" program unzipped all the files used by the program.
Look for a folder named RarSFX0 (or RarSFX1 or RarSFX2 etc).
Go to this directory (you may have to change RarSFX1 to the directory name on your PC, it could be RarSFX0 or some different number at the end)
C:\Users\<user_name>\AppData\Local\Temp\RarSFX1\resources\required
Copy the following 4 files in a directory (eg: C:\rooting)
adb.exe
AdbWinApi.dll
AdbWinUsbApi.dll
PD98IMG.zip
Open PD98IMG.zip in winrar, it should show 14 files in the archive.
<Right Click> on this file --> hboot_7230_Ace_0.85.0019_101227.nb0
and select <Delete File> to delete this from the archive, confirm the deletion and winrar will update the archive.
Close winrar and open a command prompt as Administrator and cd to the directory where you have copied these 4 files (in my case C:\rooting)
Connect your phone to PC
Make sure in phone settings
<Fast boot> is turned OFF
<USB debugging> is turned on under Development
<Charge only> is selected for PC Connection type
Follow the steps below to flash this ROM:
cd to the directory where you the updated PD98IMG.zip file
cd c:\rooting
adb kill-server
adb devices <-- This command should list your HTC Inspire something like: HT11ST224740 device
adb push PD98IMG.zip /sdcard/PD98IMG.zip
adb wait-for-device
adb reboot bootloader
Phone boots up in BootLoader, follow the prompts on the phone (do not close the command window on the PC yet)
hit power
Let HBOOT search for PD98IMG.zip and load it
hit <VOL UP> for Yes to apply the update, and let it do its work:
When it completes updating Press <POWER> to reboot
Let the phone boot up normally
Make sure in phone settings
<Fast boot> is turned OFF
<USB debugging> is turned on under Development
<Charge only> is selected for PC Connection type
Go back to the command shell on the PC and run the following to delete the file from sdcard:
adb shell rm /sdcard/PD98IMG.zip
Now launch Rom Manager and select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" (version 3.0.0.6 works)
After it updates, select "Reboot into Recovery" -> Confirm -> Grant Superuser access
And the phone will boot up in ClockworkMod Recovery "yeah..."
Note:
I had to download Terminal Emulator from the Market after flashing this ROM.
--------
UPDATE
--------
If the process above is not for you, here is an easy way I found out.
This will only downgrade your BOOTLOADER to the version which comes with DHD.
All your apps and data will remain intact.
After you have completed rooting with and CWM shows you black screen do this:
Download the attached PD98IMG.zip and follow these steps:
adb kill-server
adb push PD98IMG.zip /sdcard/PD98IMG.zip
adb reboot bootloader
Phone boots up in BootLoader, follow the prompts on the phone (do not close the command window on the PC yet)
hit power
Let HBOOT search for PD98IMG.zip and load it
hit <VOL UP> for Yes to apply the update, and let it do its work:
When it completes updating Press <POWER> to reboot
Let the phone boot up normally
Go back to the command shell on the PC and run the following to delete the file from sdcard:
adb shell rm /sdcard/PD98IMG.zip
Now launch Rom Manager and select "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" (version 3.0.0.6 works)
After it updates, select "Reboot into Recovery" -> Confirm -> Grant Superuser access
the phone will boot up in ClockworkMod Recovery, enjoy.....
thanks for this. but wow is this motha loooooong.
Or you could use the real hack kit put together by attn1.
Just an FYI, I had the same issue with the black screen but clockworkmod recovery running in the background, and I used this 1-click solution for doing ENG S-OFF, and it work perfectly, the next time the phone booted up into clockworkmod recovery just as it should have.

It seems a heck of a lot easier than what you are trying to do, and I think HBOOT still stays intact.

It's not bad for your phone, and you can reverse it if you need to. If you plan to flash different radios, Eng S-Off is a MUST.

This is not true, when you downgrade your Inspire using DHD ROM, it also flashes the radio and you don't have ENG S-Off at that time. See this recent post which also confirms that you dont need ENG S-Off for flashing radio on Inspire.

This method updates your HBOOT with a Engineering HBOOT, which works but is risky and I didn't want to take that risk .
I have HBOOT-0.85.0019 and clockwork works just fine with my phone and always has ever since I did the one click root back on Feb.14th. So I would say your post is not completely true!!!
Plus I have had Eng S-off just to try it and have reversed it also, so it is no more dangerous than anything else done on this forum!!!!

You really need to get your facts straight. The shipping hboot works fine with CWM. So does every other hboot on every other DHD RUU.
The black screens are a result of process gone wrong, not the hboot.

In my case CWM didn't work with AT&T shipped stock HBOOT (0.85.0019) for Inspire. It worked with the DHD stock shipped HBOOT (0.85.0007). I had same issue on 2 different Inspires, I didn't want to turn ENG S-Off that's why did this work around. There are may other folks who rooted their phone with the 'Simple One Click' program having this same problem and turning ENG S-Off to make CWM work. I didn't try flashing any other version of DHD ROM or any other ROM as I want to stay stock but wanted CWM working to take backups etc.
I've never had this issue. It has always worked for me.

I don't think you will run into this issue if you are flashing some different ROM over the downgraded DHD ROM. Have you tried flashing the AT&T stock rooted ROM over the downgraded DHD ROM? When you flash a non stock ROM I don't think it includes HBOOT.

Unlocking vodaphone sensation prblems

Having some problems unlocking my sensation,
Ive got s-off, installed clockwork and rooted it with another rom (done the cid etc),
now unlocking it in Terminal Emulator i just get access denied on phone, so i went for using "PG58DIAG " it doesnt seem to have done anything except re-set my phone and data.
Ive also tried the "adb" on pc and get access denied aswell
Any help??
thanks
If you used a ruu to install another rom you need to redo the rooting.
In the post where the steps to rooting are stated that you lose your root after a reboot unless you install a file. Did you do that?
Yep i installed su-2.3.6.3-ef-signed.zip to permanently root it, would it be worth doing it again incase there was an error or something?
In the bootloader i have
pyramid pvt ship s-off rl
hboot 1.18 0000
radio 10.14.9035.02_2
emmc boot
Ive just noticed when i go for recovery i get the phone with a warning triangle and nothing else, what has happened there??
Anyone else?
Ive re-done clockwork install,
should i just root from the start again?
If someone could help i would be willing to make a donation

i wanna know the steps you did to root the phone cause by lookin at this i can guess that you ran revolutionary, installed cwm, rooted your phone and than installed a stock ruu. if you did this than a) your hboot changed b) you lost root c) you lost cwm. if this is what you did than you are gonna have to run the process again from the beginning skipping the installation of a stock ruu of course. anytime you install a stock ruu than you will lose root, cwm and your hboot will change. hope this helps.
Thanks
i think that might be the problem, Ive flashed on revolution rom now, and i tried terminal and i get the numbers but no unlock code just the date im going to try the other method now and if that doesn't work ill start from scratch.

Looking for a little help with desire s on 2.3.5

Ok i have been going over every inch of the forums and all over the internet and i really run out of ideas.
i have a HTC Desire S on 2.3.5 with HBoot 2.00.0002, ive used HTCdev to unlock the bootloader and used superoneclick to root my phone (sort of) but my phone is stuck with S-ON.
i have tried everything i have found but the bootloader is stuck on the stock one, i have Rom Manager on my phone and ive tried the 4EXT but because of the phone being stuck on S-ON when it goes to the recovery part it errors out and i have to jack the battery out to get it to restart.....
HELP please :3
First your rom is rooted but system is not. You can install custom recovery , but use fastboot to flash it and all will works fine. For this problem when you go recovery you don't need to pull battery never pull it for this phone. Press volume up+volume down and then press power button and keep all pressed and phone will reboot normal

Not really sure whats going on, cause you are confused and should do MORE reading.
Root is not the same as s-off, so look into that.
You unlocked your bootloader using HTCdev, thus you are still s-on and stock hboot but now can root your phone, have a custom recovery and flash roms. - NORMAL!!!!
Try flash the recovery in fastboot.
Just to be sure your hboot does say UNLOCKED at the top right?
yes it says its UNLOCKED but im trying to S-off my phone so i can make a copy of my OS so if something goes wrong i can always go back to it
so whats the best way to S-off my desire s?, Thank you in advance and to the people that will help
@RageReaper
You can do that once you install a custom recovery. Nandroid backup..
Ive managed to root my older android phones but this is really starting to bug me I can't get nandroid to work because after I used superoneclick I installed Rom manager to make a back up and it did the clockwork mod but the recovery part of my hboot errors out this is why I'm asking for help because I think I dropped the ball on this one

It doesn't matter if the guides are talking can't s-off phone's and different hboot's, they will work still.
Do the following,
-Turn off fastboot menu/settings/power/
fastboot (on the phone)
-Turn on USB debugging menu/Settings/
Applications/Development/ USB debugging (on
the phone)
Okay, get into fastboot, boot into your hboot (switch phone off and the
press power+vol down)
Plug your phone in,
Now your phone is plugged in and in hboot, press the power button once, it'll say something like fastboot usb.
Follow the link I gave you now.

[Q] Stuck in bootloop after 6 months of smooth sailing, can't access recovery

Hi everyone!
I've been searching and reading around trying to solve a bootloop problem on my HTC Desire S/Saga (or at least I think it is a bootloop problem) but, so far, I've had no luck.
Here's what has happened and what's going on:
1) S-off and got hboot 6.98.1002 through revolutionary
2) phone worked normally for six months and suddenly, without any changes or flashes, it rebooted and started a boot loop, ie, I can't get into any in-OS menus.
3) Choosing recovery of factory settings from hboot menu just reboots the phone and restarts the loop.
4) I've tried flashing (both through fastboot and android flasher) the eng hboot 0.98.0000 and clockworkmod recovery images but neither had any effect.
Phone was vodafone-locked, running a vanilla Android 2.3.4.
hboot menu data:
SAGA PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-6.98.1002
RADIO-3822.10.08.04_M
eMMC-boot
I don't have any backup data from pre-revolutionary, either :|
I'm knocking my head against the walls, hoping that the phone's only temporarily bricked... any ideas?
Thanks in advance for helping a n00b...
Doesn't sound like a hboot problem you me, but that could just be me. And I don't think flashing the stock hboot will help.
Are you sure you are flashing the ENG hboot? It's 0.98.2000. 0.98.0000 is most likely your stock hboot and can't be flashed over revolutionary hboot in most cases.
So to get back to stock stock..... You will need to run your RUU after the new hboot has been flashed.
Another option is for you to install a custom ROM and avoiding the RUU. I still suggest you flash the ENG hboot though.

Thanks everybody!
I've been away for the last few days so I haven't been able to test anything, but tomorrow evening I'll test both suggestions and post feedback.
Thanks again!
So, I've trying out your suggestions and...

So I tried to flash the ENG hboot from this thread, using android flasher and later using this method, but adb never lists my Saga.
Fastboot lists it correctly, though. I *think* I had USB debugging on, if I recall correctly.
Using androidflasher I get a flash ok notice and then the bootloop just restarts...
Any ideas?

Your problem sounds exactly like the one on the thread linked below.... in which case, if you just try the steps from the concerned thread, and are still unable to fix your device, it can be written off as another dead eMMC...
Just follow the instructions on this thread...maybe you will have better luck than the OP?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1507106
So did your hboot change or not? If hboot and recovery won't flash then I have to agree with above, fried emmc :-(
yeah it could be an emmc problem, you may want to check the sticky in the development forum, if this is the real problem there is a possibility for a fix, not necessarily emmc replacement

Thanks, tried everything and had the exact same results. Fried eMMC, I guess..
This is really wierd, I got a phonecall, turned the call off, the phone rebooted and entered the bootloop.
Nothing fishy or wierd, no flashing erros, just a regular phonecall from my boss. Damn :|
If only I could get the normal hboot on I could repair it under warranty
Well, thanks everybody
Try going for warranty repair, for a few guys over here at xda no one checked (or din not care) whether the phone was rooted or s-off when they went to service their phone. Maybe you'll get lucky too. Good luck!

Just a little help...post in the correct section and someone might answer you...
The radio has nothing to do with speed...if the phone is sluggish do a full wipe or change the ROM....what radio did u flash? Try mounting sdcard manually from settings....
BTW, why is that u need a stock recovery image?
Flash to stock ROM to get stock recovery.
yes i know this n i cant mount mannualy throuhg phone or cwm n i need the stock recovery to use the clear storage option to unbrick my sdcard n the radio i flashed not sure was doin some search on google ended up flashing the gingerbread radio for a diffrent phone went back to look it was for a tmobile phone by accedent rebooted every thing went fine still had service and every thing so i was like no harm done but now my phone will boot up stay on for 15 20 mins the screen will go black and it will just vibrate like a dildo.lol n keep vibrateing no puase n between so i dnt know what to do ...

You should probably have read thoroughly over and over and over again so you would know what you were doing. Plus what the risks were. Also again you posted this in the wrong section it should have been placed in the Q&A thread.
Also your problem could be that you haven't rooted/unlocked the bootloader. What does your hboot menu say? List everything that it states.

so should i just go into cwm recovery and wipe every thing and re do the stock ruu through fast boot idk i used the ace hack kit unless there is a way to relfash a boot loader then idk
Well see you messed up when you used the ace hack kit. You need to read everything over and over that way this doesn't happen. You need both an UNLOCKed bootloader AND rooted phone to be flashing anything. That includes a radio, ruu, or rom. So just go to recovery format EVERYTHING and read the hack kit. Again. Again. Again. Again. Again. Again. And again. Then run the hack kit again. Make sure you have both an unlocked bootloader and its rooted before you try anything else.

see i read the ace hack kit manual put in the pass code every thing went fine so how would get the hboot unlocked and rooted if tmy sdcard is not being detected any more ?

If you unlock your bootloader you won´t be able to run the Hack kit....anyway, I wouldn´t suggest you run the Hack Kit with a messed bootloader....and I am not actually sure what have u done...but if the bootloader is not working fine flashing a RUU might mess the device even more...

actually, it doesn't matter if it says LOCKED or UNLOCKED. it's still S-OFF; that's the important part.

you can run the 3.20 RUU and still keep it S-OFF. this would install a clean, non-rooted rom, with the stock recovery. then you can PD98IMG a recovery in bootloader.

also like i said be for i culd be doing somthing n the phone will just go black an start vibrating n i have to pull the battery n turn it back on
the RUU is ran from the computer, not flashed in CWM/4EXT. the sd card is not involved in any way. if you don't want anything to happen to the sd card, remove it, then run the RUU.
