SPB Shell 3D Now Available on Market - Android Apps and Games

Looks fantastic. So, anyone putting down the $15 for this?
Also good to see they added app drawer and changed some things.
EDIT:
SPB will be putting the shell for purchase on their website in the next 1-2 weeks. Therefore, if like me you have not decided to purchase this yet, I would recommend you wait until it's up on their site to purchase from there and not the market.
Why?
If you go to their site, you will see their symbian and Windows Mobile versions pages (i.e. http://www.spb.com/pocketpc-software/mobileshell/ ) . Both of them have a trial period. This is reason number one. Reason number two is that both also have a 30-day money back guarantee - no questions asked. It stands to reason that it would be like this also for the android version. And indeed I was told in an email that you would be able to request refunds outside of the 15 minutes if purchased from their site instead of their market.
So, I'll be waiting for this and if you haven't gotten yet but are considering - I'd suggest you do so as well.

From what I've read across the web, it doesn't work with a LOT of phones/roms. It seems that depending on the ROM you are using, it will work or not.
Fantastic for a launcher that has been in development since a year or so...
And this price is from the WinMo days. C'mon Spb team, come back to reality.

OK I paid these 10€ for this and played with it for a couple of hours. ATM I'm uninstalling it and wait for some major updates. It looks awesome, it is VERY smooth on my DZ currently on stock unrooted. For me it is still too much an "initial release" - there's definitely needed a lot of work on it still.

I thought that was just an issue with the beta/ unoffically installed beta (my device got the unsupported message with that). Can anyone confirm this?

I had the beta on my sgs and it was super smooth but took forever to load initially (probably because it was a beta release). I had posted screenshots here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12026403#post12026403
It had some really pretty and useful widgets.
But I would never buy it for this price...the advantages it offer in no way justify the price. I am satisfied with Launcher Pro for now

I bought this and testet on my Original Desire Z, and on my SGT [email protected]
It worked very nicely on both devices. (even though tablets are not supported)
Anyway, it used up almost 70mb ram. And slowed things down abit, coming from LauncherPro.
It was not possible to change icons on either screen or dock..
Uninstalled for now, and awaits updates.

$15? Seriously? No way!!!

Awesome! but 15 bucks is to much, don't you guys agree?

Yup. I think if they halved it they would have a much better chance of getting people to buy it.

mytouch slide issue
friend has it on mytouch 4g. looks pretty good.
but doesnt work on my mytouch 3g slide. .. hope they can fix that.

I download it somewhere else for free is in verson 1.0, it doesn't work on my vibrant, waiting to try the updated one. Hope it would work

Not paying $15 for this.....maybe $6 or $7

+1 for sure, 15 bucks is obscene

Maybe it's my Windows Mobile 6 background talking, but $15 while higher then most apps in Android isn't a huge deal breaker to me. If this was an app that I used occasionally or a game, I might not go for it, but isn't your home launcher one of the most important apps on your phone (if not the most important one) ?
I think they would be better off if they had a demo of some sort though. Obviously many people won't risk it at this price.
Anyway, I bought it and am playing now. Awesome Eye Candy, and faster the LP, ADW, and Zeam by a mile. Also, I have not hit the re-drawing of widgets on the home screen thing that drives me nuts.
Biggest minus so far - no support for Scrolling Widgets (or I haven't found the option for it)

For those who bought it. I am curious about the Weather Widget. In the beta that I was using, the Weather couldn't find my town. How is the weather found now? Does it use GPS, 3g/4g or just type the name of your town, and hope it is in there database. Can you put in your zip code? I remember in the old days with SPB Mobile shell, that the weather for towns and cities were limited, and you had to by the Weather app separately to get you town.

The weather panel works very well.
It can find your location via GPS or cell tower and has multiple settings for update frequencies, WIFI or data, celsius or farenheit and metric or imperial measurements.
I have this launcher and believe it is worth the $15.
I can spend $15 in about 15 minutes at a bar w/friends.

On mine, I presume it's using 3g (my gps is on, but I haven't seen any activity) so I presume going off the tower. It correctly had my work city & now has my home city.
You can also manually pick a city name.

Thanks for the information on the Weather Widget. Does it have a Twitter or Facebook widget. If no, is there any twitter or facebook widget that will work with SPB?

[APP] Tomorrow's Gas Price Today (Toronto-GTA Only)

Hi all,
For those familiar with TGPT (http://tomorrowsgaspricetoday.com/), I have written a small app that will check the site for updates and notify you of new prices. It also stores the prices in a DB so you can view the history.
At the moment it only works for Toronto-GTA because I live here and wrote this for me.
This is nothing fancy, it just works.
You can download it here.
Thanks.
cool, a small widget would make this even better
nice! thanks for sharing.

Originally I planned on making a widget. But then after I got the notification going I didn't think there was much point to a widget. Since I don't need it taking real estate on my screen when I already know the price from the notification. And once there is a new price, another notification will be generated.
I will try this out! Thanks!!
good stuffs! thanks!
Great start, just installed. Thanks!

This site you list is different than the one for Toronto. The Toronto site shows only a single price since almost all stations in the area are the same price. But your site shows prices for each location.
What exactly would you want to be notified of?
Damn, this kicks butt. This will serve me well when I forget to check the site before leaving work and shut down my computer. THANKS!

I think an extension for the Navigation app that show's the gas prices based on your location. It's rare, but sometimes you can find cheaper gas in different parts of a city

Might be a problem with lock 2.0? Can you try uninstall lock 2.0 and see if the screen still wakes?
Also, TGPT doesn't do anything every couple minutes. Unless you have the debug to always notify and force update every 5 seconds. Even then I don't purposely wake the screen other than creating a notification and toast.
Yeah if go to origional lock it doesnot wakeup but see tgpt running in task manager which should not the case. I check price, kill the app, it starts again in a min also i get error when restart phone for force close tgpt app
I'm using version.1 is there new version which i can download?

crimsondr, I gotta say that I've been using this app close to since you released it, and it has been working great for me being a fellow Ontarian. I did come across one MINOR issue/bug that I never have before, only because the stars (and time) aligned it as such.
I had my Desire connected to my PC in Disk Drive mode, thereby disabling access to the SD card. TGPT tried to fire a scheduled update (once every 12 hours, which is great btw), but couldn't read it's DB from the SDcard, and threw up a Force Close error.
While it's not a huge issue because you have to have your phone in Disk Drive mode when TGPT performs an update, I just think it might be better to have the .db file on the Internal Memory of the device, especially as seeing how mine is currently 4kb in size. This should get around the exception when the SD card cannot be accessed, thereby keeping TGPT from throwing FCs.
Just thought you'd like to know since it's something that doesn't happen very often, but still does cause an issue!
Thanks again for your work and effort in dev'ing this quick, informative app!

Make sure you have Force update disabled in the settings. Other than that I don't know what is causing it and I do not have an x10a to test.

[APP] Radar Now

i'm so new to android, i'm still wrinkly.
here's my 1st weak post.
i was traveling the other week using the Sprint Navigator. when i ran into a storm. i used - Radar Now - to let me look at the size of the storm to see if i wanted to stop driving or not. it was nice to see how big the storm was.
i did have 1 problem with Sprint Navigator. it would stop running from time to time. not sure if i was just kicked off ever 300 miles or not. signal was good each time i got kicked off. uhmmmmmm
please bear with me as i'm old (54) and and don't know crap.

I wouldn't worry about it; there is no correlation between age and rooting!

Google Nav is good but I like to keep Sprint Nav around too. I have been in some locations (San Antonio for one) where the Sprint Nav worked much better.
For radar, I bought WeatherBug Elite and it has a radar widget. The free version may have it also.
I am 45 and not always the sharpest knife in the drawer but I learned Android pretty easily. Downloading androidSDK and learning to use ADB commands will get you 99% of the way there!
yes, i tried the Google Nav and liked it too. thanks.
the Radar Now app allowed me to get info i wanted with one touch to open it. need to keep my eyes on the road as much as possible.
The weather chanel had radar in motion on a google map style overlay. Very nice.

I'm not even sure I like this new version... Bits are better. The "wheel" at the top should function as one (spin to change from apps to games for example), and it would do well to be smaller.
It's not all good news though..... Not only are Google bringing in this revised App but they are also changing the returns policy on 'Paid Apps'.
At the moment it is 24hrs but very soon this will automatically change to 15mins..... Yes, FIFTEEN MINUTES!

I can understand that for many it will not be an issue but for me it does suffer an impact.
A lot of my paid software has to be tested with other Apps and other people.
There is no way I can achieve this within 15 minutes nor would I wish to challenge one of my medical team to stop what he/she is doing just so as I can ensure the new App is tested within the new time lines.
Run of the mill games and non business applications should be fine but larger business orientated applications will I feel suffer.
They may end up having to take other measures to ensure sales targets are met.

I'm not totally convinced of that - most apps are pretty cheap (even the business ones) and I think a business can afford to drop £20 or so on a copy of an app for testing purposes, whereas perhaps a "casual" user might not.
For example, if I'm looking at rolling out Android phones to lots of users, and I want to check out 3rd party exchange integration solutions, it's going to cost me less than £20 to get full copies of both Touchdown and RoadSync.
YMMV of course!
I suspect we'll start seeing more free trial/time limited versions of software popping up.

Dave

They will suffer if they don't introduce what you are saying (which I totally agree upon).
Under this new time limit there's effectively four problems:-
1. Large Content Application Downloads
Apps that have significant amounts of downloadable data i.e. Maps, Game data files etc can depending on your speed take ages to download. As such there is no realistic way you can download all the data and test it within 15mins.
2. Time & Location Apps
Some Apps rely upon a time of day or location (alarm clocks, location based sound profiles etc). 15mins isn't enough time to evaluate these Apps.
3. Utility Apps
Apps such as over-clocking, battery resource monitors, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth location-based togglers etc. How do you manage to test these within 15mins.
4. Buyers Confidence
If you have an entire day to download and try an app, you're less likely to feel rushed to test, or pressured into keeping the app. By offering an entire day to "try-before-you-commit-to-buy" Google and the developer community are conveying a sense of confidence that the apps found in the Android Market are of such high quality that you'll like them -- after all, if you don't like them they'll give you your money back! That's a pretty confident sentiment, and it sets potential buyers at ease.
By rolling that back to just a quarter-hour, Google is essentially reversing that sentiment, making users less likely to make the purchase in the first place. Do the math: 15 minutes is a reduction in time of 98.9583%.
As a short-term measure I would like to see Google change the time-limit to say 2 to 4hrs.
Long term I agree I hope we now get to see more Apps being offered with a trial bases, i.e. you can test an App for seven uses, after this time if you wish to keep and use you pay for it.

1. yup, games with large downloads after installing will be an issue. An hout would be better. 24 hours effectively allowed you to complete a game so that was too much.
2. yeah but they generally have lite versions.
3. agreed.
4. Yeah, but 24 hours was way too much. 15 probably too little (although like GANJDROID I *generally* refund within 5 mins)
15 mins is better than nothing right? If the market started with 15 mins we would be happy. Fact is we were probably a bit spoilt by having a whole day.
On a positive note, I think that google wouldn't have done with without significant pressure, and I'd assume from large game companies. So, we might expect an influx of mega-high quality games as a result, something I'm (just about) willing to give up 23 hours and 45 minutes for!

Opinions on this vs Google Nav? I've been using Google Nav since day 1 and have never tried Sprint lol. :/ Am I missing out, or should I just stick with the big G? lol.
I used google too but then I heard that sprint is better... and it is.
I think google navigation is way better....I used to use sprint navigation and when I got my Evo I haven't used sprint navigation since....google is much more real time vs Sprint navigation....alot of the times it would tell u to make a turn after u have already passed it...google maps it just on point....the only thing I miss is the fact that Sprint let's u know in advance if there will be a delay in traffic....other than that....Sprint nav. fact is telenav is the best nav. now, what program thats using telenav is a different story.
for me its faster to find and get directions via google maps than it is sprint nav.
anyone have the 6.2 version ?
Google nav in my opinion is better. Wish i could use different voices tho like darth vader maybe
Personally I think the Sprint App is much better than the Google App as far as directions. The Google App may look better but that is a personal preference.
I've found that with Google, directions can get really screwy and send you a way you would never go if you were/are familiar with the area. The biggest problem I have with the Google version is that once you get outside of larger metro areas the actual maps are not as accurate. I don't know the source of the maps but I have found that Google has many more "paper" streets. Paper streets are street that do not physically exist. At some point design plans were approved but the road was never constructed. Unless you like offroading, it gets really annoying when it tells you to turn but there isn't a road!
It's easy to choose what app you like better as they can both be run at the same time. You can't make both of them show up on the screen at the same time but you can switch between the 2 by swiping down the task bar. Give that a try and see which one is better for where you live.
I prefer Google nav. It is accurate in my area, and it seems to integrate into the system better. When I get a calendar invite, p.o., or any kind of addy in Outlook, I copy, open up my iGoogle home page, paste it into the map widget, and the highlight the star. When I get in the car its on my phone. With Telenav you have to log onto thier website and add the address manually. You can still copy/paste but you have to go back and forth first copying the street address, then the city/state/zip, and then give it a label. If I have a meeting at XYZ mall - 7777 anyroad anytown, usa 77777 I can copy/paste the whole thing into maps and it will show up on my phone labeled with the phone number, mall hours, the ability to search for a restaurant/hotel nearby, etc.

I hear you...in the end it comes down to what your preference is...some of us like Google (like myself) some of us like Sprint Nav......they both have their pros and cons...I have both install just incase one gives me a wrong address...but never use sprint...since google hasnt let me down yet...lol
CM7
Anybody running CM7 have issues installing this? I'm running RC1 and unzipped the .7z packaged on my computer and transferred the .apk to my phone. Just keep getting the "application not installed" message.
Same here...doesn't install.

I've had the Sprint nav get the GPS working properly initially when Google maps didn't do anything.

I like them both.
telenav is cool is because it saves the no toll/hov/traffic option, the three route options come up before you start, it reroutes around traffic, and the voice is better (except for the few random streets in that weird voice.
Google navigation has the advantage of being integrated with other apps better, and it looks better. It also doesn't repeat the same upcoming direction an annoying amount of times like telenav.
Question - has telenav ever told you tour destination was in the middle of a freeway? Google navigation has done that to me more than a few times.
Now that we have a new TELENAV version for SPRINT I saw someone say you need the premium version @ $4.99 a moth for it to do traffic routing? I dont see that listed as a premium feature... is anyone paying for the premium features and is it worth it? what exactly do you get (anything different that what you see when you click GET PREMIUM??)
Thanks ...

[Q] HTC Locations Missing?

First time posting and sorry if this is a repost. Since search is down, I couldn't find anything on this on the first 8 pages.
For those who bought the T-Mobile version, have you noticed the Locations application is missing? or is this called something else. The cool thing this application added was that when in Navigation and a person called you, it wouldn't kick you out of the navigation app. This was all part of the HTC Sense experience. HTC's website says this is included, but my noticed I didn't have it.
on my htc flyer, it s call locations and it is missing from the sensation.
I noticed that I don't have it either, which kinda bums me out, because sometimes while driving, I do lose data, and Google Maps takes a dump (and I can't find a good offline map app).
I just got off the phone with HTC. They confirmed that the locations app is only available on the European editions and the US version don't have it. Hopefully this is a later update.
I wonder if someone can rip it out of Euro sensation and we can try to just install it like a regular app....

You think that would include US maps?
What is so exciting about Locations? The first thing I saw when I tried to do anything useful in it was how I got a weeks trial and then had to pay to use any navigation features.

I thought walking navigation was free, no? The other advantage is it uses phone resident maps, so you don't need a data connection. Lastly you can pay for a month at a time, so for some it's cost effective.
I have telenav gps navigator on my US Sensation with the same one month pro trial and free basic usage. I also Gaia free from Amazon which has pretty good downloading capability but the street maps arent as up to date as Google or Bing.
it's not the only thing Tmobile took out. Made a post with all of it listed:

I purchased Sensation yesterday in Singapore (Starhub) and Locations is included. Looks like it is included for Euprpean and Asian markets.
As a matter of fact, I also found a voucher code in the box that gives me unlimited navigational capabilities for Singapore and Malaysia.
