depends what you restore back to.
2.3.3 is the latest

Can't you just copy that 2.3.3 stock ROM zip file to SNS root and run through recovery?

Why would you go to 2.3.3 by choice? I'm dreading the day that it says i have an update.

Will this guide work for my Nexus S? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1061855
Sorry newbie here, just want to be really really sure as I followed a poor guide somewhere and got stuck up with the google logo and lock on boot, hence was forced to install cyanogen.

Okay..so to close my question. I just followed this and everything went back to stock.
theunlockr.com/2011/01/20/how-to-unroot-the-nexus-s
1. followed the link above.
2. I remain rooted but recovery went back to stock. no more clockwork.
3. after booting, was alerted of a 2.3.4 update..so I updated again.
4. marketplace has been upgraded to the new interface (probably bec of the update)
5. to install screenshot app and fontchanger..I needed to have super user, so I just installed Clockwork (recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.4-) again and installed SU (su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip) via SD card install.
6. so far, everything's good.
If you have some questions, feel free to ask.
Download a stock rom ( unless you made a nandroid backup)
Turn off you phone then start it while holding vol+
Do a factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik cache( found under advanved)
Flash your stock rom

Is there a way to return to stock while keeping CWM ?
You can stay on stock rom while you are rooted. You can google it. I got my 2.3.4 from ardoid.com
Its a stock rom with added arabic support. Since you dont need arabic. It wont make any difference to you.

I'm not asking for keeping root, only to revert back to stock while keeping CWM
Clockworkmod will stay on your phone. As far as i know, all your phone recoveries will be done through cwm

I read somewhere that flashing a stock ROM will restore the stock boot/recovery. Is it true ?
That i cant answer u. But i can say that i went back and forth between roms. Reverting to stock when needed. CWM stayed on my phone.

dude if install stock rom via odin then u will loss cwm bt iheard u cn gt .zip files of stock roms using tht u wont loss cwn
Thats what im trying to say. The only way (i think) to lose cwm is using odin. But you can find zip stock roms. Thats what i did

[Q] Best way to downgrade from GB V2.0.2 to Infused V1.5.3?

I am on GTG's GB ROM V2.0.2 but want to go back to Froyo v1.5.3 as i am seeing some issues like phone freezing way too often. I had backed up V1.5.3 using ROM MANAGER. Can i just go to CWM and install v1.5.3 backup? OR do I need to go to stock ROM 1st? Any help is appreciated! Dont want to brick my infuse
For whatever reason my back ups did not work (i think it is a number of variables like pit this vs pit that and green vs red clockwork but didnt spend much time on it)
sooo.....i did the 1click back to stock.. Super 1click root basically staryed over...reinstalled recovery and then flashed my backup.
I am still playing with the whole "why cant i just restore a back up" but dont have much time this week to mess with that this week

The easiest way to backup using titanium backup, and then flash 1.5.3 using CWM and then factory reset using CWM. I have done this many times, and am willing to help you if you need.
THIS WILL DELETE YOUR DATA.

Just went back to Odin - Stock ( Root+3e), then installed V1.5.3, nothing was deleted from SD card... just the apps
Will now only upgrade to GB once ATT releases GB, had too many issues with Roger GB!

For some reason every time i try this it results in boot loops...
You have gone from gtgs gb build back to froyo many times?

You cannot restore a froyo backup from a gingerbread cwm recovery. You need to go to stock first using gtg's unbrick. Then I suggest after the first boot to do a factory reset from the settings within the phone not cwm. Then root and flash a froyo kernel using sgs kernel flasher from the market.
After that you can restore a backup with no problems.

That's exactly what I said above...but loglud is either misreading what the op is trying to do... or claims to be doing so from cwm...
Just realized tonight that if you use this file in this thread...you go back to ROOTED stock, with modded 3e recovery...takes a few steps out if you are just trying to get back to rooted stock
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1092021
and use this file name he attached at the end of the post
UCKD5 Stock + Root + 3e Modded Recovery

That's right.. need to go stock.. this is what i did
-> From GTG's GB V2.0.2, went to stock ( root+3e recovery) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1092021
-> Then install V1.5.3 froyo in CWM. Wipe data/factory reset for safe side. Just the Apps get deleted.. Data on Internal SD is not wiped.

I can confirm that this method works, I just did it......just follow gtg's instructions for performing a full installation if already running a custom rom.....be sure to do your backup first!

trying it now...I think the factory reset is the step I was missing
edit: indeed..that is the step I was missing
Thanks guys!
1. Back up current GB rom
2. Flash Froyo ROM
3. Factory Reset via CWM
4. Boot
5. Let system settle
6. Reboot into recovery
7. restore back up of said froyo rom
worked like a charm

[Q] g2x gingerbread help

when i got the phone i upgraded to 2.3 and now my phone is messing up and i dont feel like sending ym phone to tmobile so is the anyway to re-do this update, or downgrade back to froyo (2.2) ??
You want stock froyo? You'd need to install clockworkmod recovery and restore the stock 2.2 nandroid backup from the development section. If you want, after that you can either keep clockworkmod recovery or flash back to stock recovery.
If you installed CWM recovery you can apply a backed up image of the OTA update then use NVFlash to restore the stock recovery. T-Mobile is shipping the phones as GB now and it is now considered stock. Don't worry about going back to Froyo.
Yea but the only reason y I want to go back to 2.2 is because I can't root on 2.3 for some reason

Moving from ICS Alpha11 to Official?

Hi,
I'm currently using Koush's ICS Alpha 11, I've downloaded the official 4.0.3 version and tried to rename it "update.zip" and flash but it fails.
I'd really appreciate any help.
Thanks!
Did you go back to stock 2.3.6 and flash in stock recovery
BEST DAMN PHONE BECAUSE WE HAVE THE BEST DAMN DEVELOPERS!
Oh, so I should download this:
Android 2.3.6/GRK39F/UCKF1 Radio/KA3 Bootloader
Official, signed, can flash with ClockworkMod or stock recovery. Contains recovery, radio and bootloader.
... rename it to update.zip and then back into CWR and then ICS?
Download stock 2.3.6 and flash it you will loose clockwork mod.you have to do this to apply the official
Rename it to update.zip
In fastboot mode go to recovery and select it with your power button
When you see the android question mark hold up and power again
Choose apply update.zip and bam your done
I forgot get voodoo ota root keeper from the market and run it before flashing the stock rom
Good luck and keep ne posted

Can't seem to find FULL stock 2.3.6 for nexus S, some links floating around the web are just the update packs (around 12mb), not full.

There's a stickied post right here on the forums (this forum, in fact). It has every OTA released.

You do not need to go back to stock recovery. Do it all from cwm recovery.
Full wipe and flash the 2.3.6 from
Flash the ota file.
Reboot. The reboot into the os will flash the stock recovery

Hey guys, I'm in a similar situation too, I'm on Carbon ROM and I was waiting for a Stock update. So is there any way that I can update and keep the root? Because I think when I'll flash the stock 2.3.6, I'll lose root.
ok so I went back to 2.3.6 stock, and susprisingly I didn't lose my root/cwr or anything, then I went into recovery again and tried installing update.zip (which is ICS official stock) but the same error:
E: failed to verify whole-file signature
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
When you go back to stock you need to do a wipe.

I did wipe partition as well as cache. let me try again though.
Format everything but sdcard. Flash the official 2.3.6 T-Mobile rom. Flash the official ota update for said rom and your good. You would have to have a the 9020t model of course

How do I format? from PC? delete everything from the mounted usb volume?
From cwm recovery. Mounts and storage. Just DONT format your sdcard. Your backups are there.

I don't have clockwork anymore. I see limited options now, and the title on top is "Android System Recovery <3e>", but I do see an unlock icon when the phone boots.
You need to reflash clockwork from fastboot. When you load a stock os it overwrites the recovery
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I have no clue how I did it couple months back, can you please point me to a guide that shows how to flash cwr on 2.3.6? many thanks
What rom that is on the phone does not matter . You just need to get your phone recognized on a computer with fastboot. Then flash the recovery from there. Or just boot the recovery directly from fastboot.
