no clue if this would work, or if it would even be possible.
i'd love to have my phone synced up with my in dash nav, similar to the way the video out works to put the phone on the tv, but with the only difference of being that you could control the phone through the nav (slightly older Eclipse AVN6610 with no usb in).
without completely hacking up wiring and possibly even screwing around with the nav firmware, is there any way possible to do this?
if not, then i'll have to settle with having my phone at least wired for sound/music out.
thanks

In a post on these forums I saw that there was a way to load android os to a netbook or laptop. I followed the instructions and it worked, which got me thinking. I love the green robot and it would be cool if I could create a custom car stereo with the android os running on it. The equipment is rather simple, was going to use my netbook which comes with usb, bluetooth, wifi, mic and audio out as the main device, then pick up a 3m touchscreen, and a gps module so that I could have touch control and google maps. Lastly for this all to work I am going to need a way to be able to control phone calls coming to my phone but with the car receiver. I am not sure how feasible this is or if I am overlooking something. The hardware and hookup I am sure I can do, I am only worried about the compatibility of all this hardware with an android os. and information hints or suggestions would greatly be appreciated.
I recently purchased a car that has a USB interface for the radio. My wife's Iphone fully integrates with it, of course, and via the radio's interface but the Samsung only mounts as a connected drive.
I have read other thread where people were able to force their Samsung into car dock mode by modifying a USB cable. Is there anyway to just do that in software?
you misunderstand what car mode is.
Good luck! I switched back to my iPhone for this reason alone. I listen to a lot of podcasts and I couldn't get this to work via the USB interface and I don't have bluetooth on my head unit. I can't seem to get the newest update to see if that works either. Would love to know if someone has a solution that doesn't require making your own cable.
yo sleze..what model car if i may ask?
i made my own auxiliary input for my car(i know its not a big feat) with an old dsl filter a soldering gun and some resistors and capacitors.. i might be interested in creating a usb interface for my car and then maybe i can give you some insight .. big maybe
well you will never get the headunit to command the phone, android simply doesn't support anything like that. but you can get audio over USB which is triggered by shorting a couple pins through a resistor. ill have to look up that thread but there may already be a dongle or cable out there to do this. it may not be say "android carmode" but if you find the name of the USB standard that they use to trigger it you can find the appropriate cable or dongle.
isnt there a usb headset available that can stop/start music and next track functionality ..if so you could (in theory) make a usb interface that would allow the head unit or in my case steering wheel control to work similarly?
no it wont command the phone. the framework and apps don't have an interface for that. plus the headunit would need special drivers if the phone had that capability. the issue with android is too many manufacturers do things different so unless google comes out with that on a nexus and tells maunfacturers the way it needs to be implimented I don't see any hope.
there might be a way to echo the commands through adb if you have a computer in your car. but I guess you'd have to know how the music app works for that.
we All know apple has the accessories market down pretty good. even though some older accessories don't work with the newest hardware. that's the one thing apple is good for, a wide accessory market.
now if you have a Bluetooth controler and it uses the right protocol to work with thw samaung bluetooth stack then you might be able to map keys to certain functions with an app or simple configuration file editing. but as far as USB goes I don't think android is designed to host USB input devices. there is limited otg usb support on certain special galaxy s and nexus 1 and nexus s kernels but nothing native.
maybe some 3rd party root app could eventually be developed but I haven't heard of one yet.
besides all that, who knows if the head unit will know to go into audio over USB mode in the first place, even if you get the phone in that mode, will the headunit be looking for USB storage and an iPhone interface only? was it designed to accept USB audio other than an iPod interface?
well with my car BMW mad a usb interface for ipod/iphone.. i hate mac so scratch that.. i also have a usb interface(i can control radio/nav functions via carputer) that is designed to work with I-BUS (intelligent input bus) which is what some BMW's used for audio/nav integration. some newer models actually come with a usb input that was designed to work with most media players..so i thought maybe with some time/frustration/rum..i might be able to make it work..

It still to my understanding that on BMW iDrive system will have full integration with iOS. We had a 2010 5 series at home with all the bell and whistles on it, and even then it would only display song names. With my iPod we got full library options, podcast too. Android will only be able to be used as a mounted devices.

I used to have an iPhone and installed this kit http://usaspec.com/product.php?ProductID=18. After switching to android I just use a 2.5mm to RCA cable to plug in to the same unit. Not worried too much about integrating with car controls - I also use a phone mount. Does your head unit have any AUX IN connectivity? Maybe on the rear? If so just play audio through the headphone jack. There's always the lighter socket RF adapter option too, but audio quality with those things can be lame.
Samsung-SGH-I997 Infused 2.3.3
yeah the headphone amp on the infuse has pretty good fidelity too. the headphone Jack might not be as convenient as a single USB that also charges the phone but I'd you want to use the playlists and 3rd party apps like Pandora or Google music its the best way. audio over USB needs the dock or special cable to trigger but I don't know which headunits will support that.
I want to upgrade my factory Suzuki Jimny stero. I don't need a disc drive!
I want...
GPS and mapping with external Antenna connection if possible
Bluetooth
3G
WiFi
MP3, remote camera if possible
Behind the ddash stero with no face
I have double din space so a 7" would be perfect.
I currently have a Galaxy TAB7 (original) that would fit nicely but it does not have the external connections and I use it in my work vehicle so thats where it will likely stay.
Has anyone dome this and whatr tablet and car stereo would suit this purpose?
Oh, and FM radio, or perhaps DAB+ (Australia)
How about an ASUS eee Pad Transformer?
Probably one of the best for outside connections.
I'm wanting to do something similar to my Rx-8 once I have time, but I may just hack away at the tablet and fabricate one myself.
What sort of 'head' unit (without an actual head) could be used for this?
I too am thinking my 7" GT will be going into my Jeep double DIN. I found the Audio/Video/USB dock adapter cable on Amazon which will allow me to send the audio signal to the 4ch amp. My cell phone has the wifi hotspot for 4G which the Tab will tether to for NAV, TuneIn Radio and Places. I plan on running Tasker so that when I turn the key and the tab begins to charge it launches the TuneIn radio application in the foreground as well as launches Google Maps. I have used Tasker for many years and it works so well that the Razr Maxx incorporated a Moto version of it on their Blur. The things I have to decide are how I am going to conceal this behind my factory trim but still be able to access the volume and power buttons. Thinking there are widgets available for volume control but the power button might be harder to access although with the internal charging settings on the Tab, when it is charging the screen never turns off but when it stops it times out in 15 sec. Who knows.
I have this radio "hxxp://www.ebay.com/itm/121249150207?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649" (I put xx in the HTTP because I don't know it live links are allowed.) This unit uses the systems stock control panel giving it more of a factory look. It's not perfect, but it works.
Some of the issues I have are it's running android 2.3. It will not mount flash drives unless they are present when the system boots. You can't really browse the web because the memory will load up too fast and slow the device to a crawl to a point where its not usable, so some quick web browsing is out. Because I followed the instructions when hooking everything up which may I add were not completely accurate, I can't play dvd's not even with the vehicle on park. The pink parking break cable with these two brown cables were all on a connector which I connected. I really did not want to mess up the warranty by splicing cables that look as they they should not be spliced just so I could ground the pink wire. Bluetooth wont connect to my obd2 device, as it pairs and disconnects. I can go on and on, but I have managed to work through some of the problems.
I am wondering if there is a way to root this unit, or update the OS? Is there an alternate solution to the DVD app so maybe I can play DVD? I only have a back button on the unit, so there is no menu button. There is a config button that takes you into the settings menu, and that is about it.
It does have the Imx53 smd Arm7 with 512mb of ram which I think is a lie because I only saw 308mb, but maybe you loose some ram on video.

So nobody has any ideas?

So my friend just came from a Galaxy s6 and has been using Android Auto (Pioneer 4100 NEX) for awhile. The pixel will not work at all when connected.
Anyone have the same issue or a resolution to it?
Thanks!
Go here for help with stereo, http://avic411.com/ Also Pioneer web site has help about the Pixel and Android Auto. The biggest problem is the cords from the stereo. Some people have had to plug a " special" cord to the back of the stereo.
FWIW, my wife has a S7 edge and Avic 4200 and we had to use the Pioneer microsd cable. On my Kenwood DNX 893s I use the OEM USB A-C cable on my Pixel. Cords can make a big difference for picking up the phone. I'm not aware of any pioneer pixel issues though... Usually up to date firmware on the radios and OEM cables do the trick.
Not with that particular radio, but just to say using the USB A to C cable in my Ford Focus works just fine with Android Auto. The only issue I have is if I touch my phone or cable the wrong way it will kick it out of Auto mode for some reason.
My GF bought a 2016 Honda Accord a few months ago and trying to navigate the touch screen and get android auto to work properly is like trying to solve a Rubiks cube. If you're plugged into the cars USB port simply to charge your phone (as a passenger) android auto keeps popping up on the screen and wanting to take over. You try to exit the screen thats prompting you to use android auto and seconds later it'll pop back up. So finally you admit defeat and try to install android auto on your phone officially and it wont install or connect with the cars stereo. IF you finally get it to work, you phone becomes completely inoperable, which kind of makes sense as you can control the music and everything from the steering wheel or the cars touch screen, but if you're a passenger it sucks because you can't do anything on your phone. If you uninstall android auto, the car stereo constantly tries to connect with your phone and wont let you do anything else. Half the problems I have are with android auto and the other half with with what I consider a crappy user interface/layout and design of the stereo. If I could murder android auto, I would do it violently.

I know with my Kenwood DNX893S and any Android I can swipe down from the top of the phone and choose "charging only" or something like that and the phone goes back to normal and it can be used while charging.
