I'm seeking some help on a question that I'm sure has been answered here previously.
Having been a regular member on other forums, I know how frustrating it is when outsiders show up and want to leach off the knowledge of those who are down in the ditches of an interest day in and day out.
And that's a fair point. I'm not interested in being a leach, but right now I don't have the time to learn something new, and I need my phone to run better. The flip side of that, is that if someone is willing to take 5 or 10 minutes to spoon-feed me through some basic questions, I'll paypal you $5 for the effort. Is this an ok / not skuzzy way to go about it?
Anyway - here's my situation:
1) I don't fully understand the distinction between a Mod, Rom, and Kernal. I've run Darkys, Bionix, HoneySomething, and Trigger (which I believe are ROMs), and Clockwork (which I believe is a MOD), and I've seen some of these combinations boot up with "Overstock" (which I think is a Kernal)
2) The reason this matters right now, is that I own a Vibrant, and it just won't work properly (including when running the stock 2.2 from Samsung)
3) I basically just want my phone to work, all of it, without lag, slowness, and a frustrating UI experience. Trigger has been the closest, but it's slow and lags (1200 Quandrant Score). Honey*Something* was the fastest and smoothest, but I lost haptic feedback on everything other than keyboard typing (so, no haptic on home etc).
4) What matters to me:
- No lag. I don't care about quandrant score if this thing will just work - register key presses WHEN I PRESS THEM, not half a second later
- Haptic feedback remains working on all button presses system wide (capacitive touch buttons, keys, back, home, pressing application icons, etc)
- Everything works that should - like GPS, etc (I've never had GPS problems on this phone - but just mentioning it since a lot of people seem to).
- I like Trigger's behavior of a double-home press zooming out and showing all home screens so that you can navigate between them quickly.
So - can someone basically spoon feed me "Get this rom, plus this, plus that, and you're golden?" It's a legitimate offer. I know it's only $5, but I figure for someone who's doing this all the time, it'll take you 10 minutes to explain what I should get in a few emails back and forth - and you'd be saving me a few hours that I just don't have right now.

Hello everyone,
My AT&T sales guy sent me to this forum. I have been looking around and searching and realized that I am in over my head to be honest. I just got a Fuze and like it for the most part. There are a few things that I do not care for that maybe you guys can tell me if I need a new ROM and if so, which one. The things I would like to change are:
1. I would like quicker/easier access to my Tasks. I use Outlook tasks A LOT and it is not easy to get to them (not as easy as contacts and messaging anyway)
2. The notifications are not obvious. I was running an 8525 with WM6 and the notification would pop up at the bottom of the screen. I have to click the tiny notification bell symbol on the Fuse, which is annoying.
3. Scrolling is an issue. I am very used to my scroll wheel on the 8525. Is it possible re-map the volume control buttons to scrolling arrows?
Also, dragging my finger on the screen is a pain. I almost always call someone inadvertently when I try to scroll.
4. Battery life is MUCH better than my 8525 (probably due to the 8525s age + the better technology), but battery life could always be better.
5. The ring and speaker phone volume is pretty low, even with my volume control maxed out.
6. I don't like that the screen turns off when someone answers. It is great for everything except voicemail.
So, all in all, I am happy with it and hopefully the short list above is comprised of things that are easy to fix. What do you think, can I fix these issues with registry changes, or do I need to change the ROM? If I need to change the ROM, which one (I have found dozens)??
Thanks!
Can't answer most of those.
#6. Get Touch In Call Screen Tweak
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=488991
This is a good page to start looking for answers:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/
Yes - a custom rom will (probably) make it easier to access the parts you want quickly, however some 3rd party apps may give you the same control without the hassle of flashing (however, if you do decide to flash - its not difficult, just make sure you read the guides carefully before you start!
As for the audio volume - (sorry if this sounds dumb) make sure that the screen protector has a cut-out over the speaker. Crazy i know - but from reading some old threads on here - not all of them did, so you end up blocking the speaker & not being able to hear properly.
Battery life - depends on usage of course, also a different radio may make a difference for you. Unfortuantly there isnt a magic one here, different radios seem to give different performance & battery life in different areas (and of course usage patterns)
Re-mapping buttons? google for AE Button - can remap buttons in anyway you like.
Notifications - i believe you can get the balloon preview at the bottom of the screen using advanced config (search for it on here) [dont have my phone with me right now so i cant check what the setting is]
Hope it helps a little and welcome to the forums
Thanks for the info guys. I like the looks of the in-call tweak, but think I'll wait until I get the rest of the stuff and do it all at once.
Beeble,
I admit that I am a little worried about flashing it for a new ROM, especially since there are so many out there. If I do it, I want to make my choice, do it and be done with it. I do not want to be flashing it every 2 or three days until I find a ROM that I like.
As with the phone tweak, I think I'll try the the AE Button one when I do the in-call tweak.
Couldn't find a setting on the notification bubbles. Maybe I am not looking in the right place.
How do I get a new radio? I assume this is a software thing. Does this require flashing? Is it an ordeal to do this?
Thanks!
Unfortuantly you will almost certainly flash more than 1 rom once you start!
You'll (probably) spend hours and hours reading about them and trying to decide which is right for you. Then 3 days later you'll start grabbing random ones and just trying them out!
Before you flash anything you'll need to hard spl your phone. This is very important, but really pretty simple (if you dont hard spl, you can only flash official roms from your phone supplier - once you have hard spl you can flash any rom from any carrier, aswell as custom roms)
This is the guide to flashing and its very simple to follow - just take your time & dont skip steps.
If you do get the flashing bug - check out this UC thread it'll tell you how to automate about 95% of the setup of the phone after a flash (or hard reset).
Flashing a radio is the same process as flashing a rom, although it wont perform a hard reset (so you dont have to set everything up again) - But as always backup first just in case!
Radio thread here - remember, once you have hard spl'd your phone you can flash any Raphael radio. If you want to use a radio from another device, you'll need to Security unlock it first
Backup - you can use backup software like sprite, but if you are changing rom dont restore the old backup - you'll get all kinds of problems! Instead use PIM backup (free) which you can use to restore numbers/meetings/calls etc regardless of rom
If you get problems - or want some help - just let us know whats stumping you, make sure you've had a good read first - and please dont ask what rom you should get without listing exactly what you want the rom to do for you! most roms come down to preference.
Finally - good luck! and remember you have a GSM phone - so stay away from CDMA threads & downloads, otherwise you could brick your phone (follow the links in the guides and you cant go wrong)
Ok so right off the bat I'm not a professional phone reviewer. This is just me talking about a phone I'm excited about... I didn't post any pictures as I didn't take any yet, but I'm very pleased with the look and you can find plenty online.
So I've spent the last two weeks researching and looking for a good dual sim phone, with dual standby capability. Before I start, without a dual standby capability a dual sim phone doesn't let you take a call from one number, while you are talking on your other number.
This phone is the international version and is a triband 900/1800/1900 - as always be sure your service provider runs on the band before you buy a phone. It also has to separate IMIE numbers as well.
[This next paragraph is for entertainment only, so feel free to skip to the next one if you're not interested in a very good prank.]
I ordered this phone from Amazon and chose overnight shipping. Needless to say I've not been excited about a phone for a very long time, but this time I was. Unfortunately the last update was that it was checked into Memphis, which has all flights grounded. So, the 2nd day I check the tracking and I see that it's out for delivery, I hop in my car and start the 40 minute drive to my office to pick it up. 3 minutes out my manager calls me and tells me "it just arrived"... I arrive and I open my shipping box, upset that it's late but happy it's here. I pull out the phone box and open it up... only to see some piece of crap prepaid ancient mini brick phone. I instantly flip my lid, and for a split second I considered just snapping this piece of crap in half. I then dump the box contents on the floor, and then realize there is a group of people in tears laughing. Turns out my best friend cut the packing box open (from the bottom as not to damage the label) and put his crap phone in it. Anyways, on to my thoughts...
[Appearance] So, when I pull the phone out it's really quite nice looking. It has the shape and appearance of an Iphone, but it has the 4 hard buttons at the bottom. One nice thing comparing it again to the Iphone is that not everyone and their dog has one of these. Very slim form and smaller overall than the Iphone. I have not taken pictures yet, and have not completely tested it overall but I have already decided that it was well worth the $260 ($230 from another seller, but I paid the extra $30 for piece of mind).
The first thing I do is pair it with my windows mobile Smartphone and I then beam over all of my contacts. The windows mobile phone just sends them all, but I had to hit accept for every single file. Tedious, but much easier than actually re-entering them in by hand. After that I had to enter into the file explorer and choose reload for about 90% of them (one by one again). In the end they all transferred over, with attached photos. The only thing that didn't transfer was the ringtone assignments.
[Call Quality] Once I was able to get outside of work hours I placed both my personal and work sims inside the phone. I've tested it like crazy just on calls alone. First, the speaker phone is WAY louder and much more clear than my HTC Fuze (Raphael). In addition the call quality when not on speaker phone is quite nice as well. There were times when I thought I dropped the call because there wasn't that light hiss in the background. Next I tried calling out on the sim. When you dial a number, just to the right there are a couple of boxes and you just touch the sim you want and whalla, you're calling out on that sim. It also had no problem taking calls from one line while on the other. It's just like call waiting. The only negative to it is that the icon which identifies the sim is very small and in the top left of the incoming call, so it's somewhat hard to tell which line is ringing. Although I predict I will get quite used to it.
The touch screen is very responsive and is actually fairly easy to negotiate around with just using your fingers. The speed of the phone is nearly instant in everything you do, outside of accessing memory to change a ringtone or something (super slow). Granted I have a crapload of photos and ringtones on my microSD card.
[Features] It has some pretty cool features within the simple operating system. There are 4 hard buttons on the bottom, and 4 soft buttons at the bottom of the touch screen. The hard buttons are useful and make sense. The screen buttons are also good. There is one button on the bottom right that opens up a new menu on the right side of the screen. This menu has 4 long buttons that let you easily access everything you need within the phone. In addition there is a little rounded tab at the right side of the screen when you are in idle mode. The first tab allows you to access your "widgets" You can just drag them and drop them right onto the desktop, or drag them right back in. Out of the box the widgets are as follows: FM radio, round old school clock, Calendar, music, photos, world time, memo notes, missed calls, messages, and schedule. Really neat in that you can just place them where you want, and they all come out small but expand into the full featured widget. At the idle screen you can also slide your finger either right or left, and it makes the screen flip as if it was a cube. Your widget menu has not been replaced by a speed dial menu. Press any icon from 2-9 (1 reserved for Vmail) and it lets you choose a contact to associate. You can then drag that icon right onto the desktop of the phone as well. Overall very cool features so far.
The locking mechanism is quite nice as well. You can either unlock with a short hold on a key on the screen, or the lock key on the right side of the phone. About the only negative so far is that there isn't a slide to unlock, and you press the hard keys to answer or decline. I know at some point I will accidentally answer or decline someone while pulling the phone out of a full pocket.
Next onto the camera. 5M camera with a crapload of image settings. While the quality isn't nearly as good as my high end digital camera, it shares many of the same features. It has an LED flash, and you can really play around with the settings (assuming you are a camera buff, otherwise most will just confuse you). It lets you take quick action photos in sets of 3, 6, or 9 in fast succession too. it also has a video camera, but I didn't test it as of yet.
It has an FM radio which needs to have the dual earphone wired headset hooked up to it to use (typical). The headset of course has a microphone also for those of you who think talking on Bluetooth was invented by the "debil". (That's some high quality H20).
The PC suite that comes with it is pretty nice so far also. When you connect the phone you can choose between 4 options. One can be a music sync for all the music lovers out there, but my presumed favorite is that you can use the phone as a modem with the provided software (not tested yet). You can connect to your PC via USB or Bluetooth. I only wish my work computer would allow for me to install software! Oh well...
Text messaging and MMS is nice as well. You can choose most of the typical entry methods, but I've been having fun with the handwriting entry. Don't leave any gaps when you spell any letters, but it's cool to just write on the screen and have it put it right into a text. It's slower than using the on screen key pad, but a fun novelty for now. It doesn’t appear to have a full touch screen qwerty, but I also didn’t rotate it to landscape during testing so it could be there.
I did have one issue with my voicemail recognizing one number at AT&T, but after a long hold time they just reset my voicemail and both numbers worked like a charm in accessing vmail. One negative, and a fairly big one is that when I called both of my lines and left voicemails it still only put one voicemail notification at the top. It's not possible, or at least I've not figured out how to discern which line has the voicemail on it. Although when unlocking it puts a nice big box on the screen stating the calls I missed. In addition the missed call widget is nice to show missed calls as well.
About the only issue I am having so far is getting the internet to work. I want to test it just so I can verify it will work, and to mess around with the browser some. I intend to drop my dataplan as I only used it for my GPS previously, and since Santa brought me a full on GPS I know it's a wasted $30 a month.
[G-sensor] It also has what I think is called the G-sensor, or at least the thing that rotates the screen when you do. Also when you drag the widgets or speed dials onto the screen you can shake it to “snap them into place”. Personally I prefer to place them in the locations I want though.
So, in closing I love this phone so far. The last phone I was this happy with was the original Razr back when no one else but me and a select few had it (only a few other dummies willing to pay the $500 for it back in the day). I presume that I have missed a fair amount of things people may be interested in, so please feel free to ask for additional information and I will see if I can discern it from messing around with the phone. My HTC Fuze and Crap dual sim Chinese phones are officially retired. I’m sure I’ll snag another smartphone at some point so I can load up all of the tweaks from here, but for now it’s nice to have a phone that isn’t slow to respond and accomplishes my personal goals.
But no windowsmobile, right?
HI, thats a long review. Think a lot people are happy about it, cause it is a good phone i suppose.
But it's not windowsmobile,isnt it?
I need "dual sim" "dual standby", and find no windowsmobile phone that supports this. I have two china phones, which both drive me mad, more than windowsmobile ever did, so I finally want to find a solution.
Don't think this is the right thread to post my topic,so I'll search now for the right place here in xda-developers.
Cheers

N1 suffers from one simple but debilitating hardware limitations - lack of hardware buttons.
Since trackball clicking is rarely used, it would be nice to assign a different function to it.
The first function coming to mind has to do with the fact that the device is a phone -
make trackball into a "Send" button.
This is what it should do:
1) whenever not in the dialer app, clicking trackball should bring up/start the dialer.
2) when in the dialer app, and a phone number was entered, clicking trackball should dial the number.
3) when there's an incoming call, clicking the trackball should answer the call.
I know some people with arthritis who would kill for such an app.
Thanks.
If such an app. were to be created, how about the case where the foreground process requires the use of the trackball click? Then every time you clicked it, the phone dialer would load.
I also don't personally thing the Android APIs would allow such a global hook (w/o root), but I'm not the best dev. out there so I'll let the more experienced respond to that one.

Well, that's the whole point.
You mean like a game? So far, games might be the only programs where you HAVE to use trackball for functionality.
I think all other programs allow touch screen input in place of the trackball.
Since I never use the trackball for anything, and I've seen a number of comments with the same sentiment (ie "trackball is useless"), I'd gladly trade the entire trackball function (including moving the cursor with the ball) for the ability to have a hardware "send" button.
I'll personally pay 50 dollars to a man/woman who can make this work. Then they can collect the money from thousands of market goers who'd would prefer a useful hardware button over a useless one.
Just a small bump.
why is this in the development section?
/sarcasm
jesus people your right stuff like this should be posted next to / under/ above threads like Cyanogen and Amon_RA
And how would you handle the movement of the ball when it rolls? I find when in recovery, it doesn't take much for the trackball movement to register and overshoot the options I am aiming for if not careful. Obviously a sensitivity setting would be the recourse for such a dilemma but still...or were you thinking that anything beyond buttonOn (false function obviously) is ignored?
Technically you could go as far as to have the tracball pressed trigger the dialer. From there you can scroll to call log, contacts, favourites using the trackball and then scroll down if you so desire.
I do find it odd that the phone has this hardware button and rarely is it actually used.
I think being able to touch the trackball and force the phone out of sleep is a sound expectation for this phone...the fact it isn't there is odd.
just get a sense or blur rom, that fixes everything

hahaha...
in other news, plenty of people have no interest in senseUI
One more bump.
Someone should really write this program.
Using the trackball to bring the phone in and out of sleep would drain your battery. That trackball is way to easily pressed (ie in your pocket) to be of any use as that function, but I would love the phone/send function. Would be wonderful as I hate having a phone shortcut on my homescreen.
Would be willing to pay or donate as well.

Thank you. One of very few people who seem to understand this problem.
Anyway, the community's reluctance to implement this feature is a seeming indication of difficulty to do it. Maybe Android OS isn't that flexible; or maybe it's just too new, so people haven't really learned yet how to do things with it.
After all, the Win Mobile OS has been around for ages, and sure enough, as soon my Sprint Touch Pro2 was released, I had an app to rebind all the keys to whatever function I wanted.
Perhaps, in the future, we will see an Android app like the one I want. But, to my greatest disappointment, it may be years...
bump bump bump
I'll bump it one more time.
Any progress with this feature?
Another month has passed...
Has any developer figured out if it'd even be possible to make an app like that?
Thanks.
So I'm getting back into the smartphone game again after being away awhile and I got a Nexus S today basically free of cost, practically brand new without a mark on it. Previous owner had it as a temporary phone during a warranty repair job of his primary phone and when he picked up the repaired one they said he could keep the Nexus S (wish I could get that lucky).
Anyway, while I know there are a ton of different ROMs available for this fantastic (albeit older) device, here's what I really want and I'm not sure it's possible. I've used CM in the past on several devices and one of the things that I always loved first and foremost was the ability to change tracks during music playback by holding the volume up/down button(s) (long press as a short press adjusts the volume). Now, I'm not a coder, not a developer, not a ROM builder, etc - I basically enjoy the work of others provided by their ROMs and so on.
This time out I've decided to try and stick with a pure stock ROM (which I'm not sure of at the moment, the NS has 4.1.2 on it but I plan to do testing with the factory 4.0.4 and 4.1.1 images as well just to see what's going on). Since those are factory images they're obviously not rooted so I can use WugFresh's Nexus Toolkit to handle the rooting for me.
So here's my question: is the ability to use the volume controls for changing tracks during music playback (with the screen off) a ROM-specific thing or is it kernel-specific - I've never been able to find an accurate answer to this question and I've asked it several times on different forums over the past 4+ years and still nothing of substance has ever been given as a response.
I know that some music players advertise they can do it (I've seen PowerAMP mentioned a few times but it just doesn't appear to work for me, ever, on any device). Again, I'd prefer to stay stock as much as possible, save for rooting the device, and then hopefully find out either a) I have to use a custom ROM with this feature enabled in it, or b) it's kernel related and I can just install a custom kernel which I can tolerate since it'll help on several aspects.
Sorry to make this so wordy but that's just how I am.
tl;dr version: I want to remain as stock as possible, with root only, and be able to change tracks during audio/music playback with the screen off by using the volume control buttons. Is it possible with just installing a custom kernel (given this Nexus S is bootloader unlocked) or not?
Hopefully someone can offer an answer that'll put a smile on my face but, if not that's fine too I suppose, I can just drop back to CM10 (4.1.1) stable and stick with it, not sure 4.1.2 really does all that much to improve things and 4.2.2 apparently is just too big for the limited 512MB of RAM in this NS to be smooth sailing.
Thanks...
This feature is build in with the app "Uber Music" its a setting called "Use volume buttons to control media"
It works great and its awesome if you don't mind putting in a few dollars to get the app
Cheers,
Luke
UberMusic looks nice, sure, but it doesn't do what I was hoping it would (and was suggested in the post above). The setting preference says "Enable headset controls" and I already have that ability: I have a cord from Apple earbuds where I removed/desoldered the original factory earbuds (because they're crap) and then replaced them with a pair of Koss IEMs that I like. So even though the cord looks like I'm using Apple earbuds I'm not.
Having said that, I can already control the Play (single click), Pause (single click), and Next track (double click) functionality, but obviously the dedicated volume buttons on the remote don't work for whatever reason. The Nexus S has a proper TRRS jack but it seems like no Android phone makers care enough to actually allow for such volume control through that jack. And the typical triple click Previous track functionality doesn't work either, sadly (and that's with any remote I've ever tried, even earbuds/IEMs that claim to work or are "designed for Android."
So again, I'm trying to control changing tracks (Next and Previous) with the volume rocker on the phone itself and when the screen is off, that's it. Since the phone is in my hand 99% of the time and my thumb is on the volume rocker, it's infinitely more efficient to change tracks with a slight movement of the thumb than trying to grasp the inline remote and double click or whatever.
Sure is odd why this question is so difficult to get an answer to over the years...
Most custom roms support this. It's not a kernel thing afaik. You may be able to find a mod to get it working on stock. It seems like I've seen it before in the ns4g themes & mods but I could be wrong.
As for triple press on the headphones, it's always worked for me with poweramp on multiple headphones.

I didn't want to crowd the slimbean thread with my noobish questions, so I thought I'd ask here. Any help is greatly appreciated.
1- When texting someone, I don't see the little mic on the keyboard so I can speech to text. Any way to get it back?
2- I really enjoyed the TW(?) Contacts way of doing things in GB, like swipe left to text, swipe right to call. Is that possible in 4.2?
3- It seems the touch sensitivity is good, but I'd like a bit more, as I have to sometimes touch somethings 2 or 3 times to open it. Is there a way to increase sensitivity?
4- Is there a task manager of some sort to end processes? Someone told me to long press the home button then clear the screen to do this. But if say I have Pandora playing and long press home/clear, it still keeps playing. Leading me to believe it doesn't really stop app/processes. Any ideas?
5- When receiving texts when phone is idle, there is only a tone alert, but when turning on the screen, there is no obvious (visual) indicator that I have a text to read. I have to pull down from the top to see it. Any way of getting a more visual indicator? (Like the puzzle piece)
Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about JB, but the way GB did some things was really good and I wish they could have kept some things the same. Is there any way I can get these features back?
If you don't know all of the answers, that's OK. Any and all help will be much appreciated.
Thanks for all the help guys. I've decided to go back to GB. It just works 100%. Sure, JB is pretty cool and I appreciate all of the hard work that goes into it. But it just didn't feel "finished" for lack of a better word. Camera didn't work right, no HDMI, no mic on keyboard, touch screen not as responsive, slightly glitchy, among other things.
Good luck to the devs, and keep up the good work. It's just not for me. When GB is no longer supported by app devs, I'll just get a new phone. Take care guys and gals.
