[Q] Overheating problems - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well i'm currently running CM7 RC2 with the Netarchy 1.3.0.0 kernel. I'm constantly having my phone overheat and reboot on me in the middle of the night. Overheating typically only happens while charging, but when it does i have seen my phone get up to 102 to 107 F. I had my alarm set for this morning, when i woke up my phone had a completely black screen with the buttons lit up, and the phone was very hot. So i had to do a battery pull, after i pull the battery it boots up normally and starts to cool down. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? Thanks in advance. Plus i have found that my phone still reboots, sometimes it will randomly reboot when i'm not doing anything and it will show my boot animation but it's not full color, and slightly dimmed. And the only way to boot normally is to do a battery pull. This same problem has happened on my wife's Nexus S. I have her set up with the same kernel and rom i'm running.

Just a question. Do you have the main settings set on boot?

I had exactly the same happen last night with CM7 RC2 and Netarchy 1.3.0.1. The phone was really hot and I was worried it had been damaged being stuck like that for so long. It seems fine now though.

What do you mean? im not using setcpu, and my phone is not OC'd. @phillevy mine has been doing this everyday it seems like, when it gets that hot it really worries me too.

Are you using the phone to tether?

Nope i don't use tethering at all, i'm constantly connected to wifi at home.

This is the first time I've had this happen where the phone as overheated like this, although I've had a few reboots to the dimmed cyanogen bootscreen. I'm using setcpu and have a screen off profile of 100-800mhz.

Looks like I am going to try rc3 and see if these issues still persist.

[Q] What would cause the phone not to wake up?

I picked up a Captivate and used SuperRooter, got Clockwork on there, and put on some apps. What's odd is that if the phone sits for a while and I try to wake it up, the screen doesn't turn on - even after waiting like 3 minutes. Besides flashing back to stock, is there anything I can do to see what might be causing this? Would a logcat via ADB help? When I set it down and use it every few mins, it's fine. It's just doing the weird not waking up thing when it sits for a while.
I've had mine since aug. 2nd....this just started happening to mine over the past few days, where it'll shut off while sleeping. Its only done it 2 or 3 times tho. Mine isn't rooted.
Seems this is happening to a bunch of people, some have had to remove the battery to get it back on....i haven't had to do this yet. (knock on wood)
Is there a way to disable a long press of the Power button while the phone is locked? I'm wondering if that is part of the problem.
Are you using SetCPU? The ondemand CPU governor is known to cause this problem.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Setcpu was causing my vibrant to do the same thing, deleted it and everything is fine
If SetCPU is an app, i haven't installed that one....
Removed it and it is still doing it. If the phone is plugged into anything (weither stay awake is on or not) it seems fine but when it is unplugged, it shuts off every few mins. My girl has this phone for the week and I won't see her til the weekend but I was reading on Android Forums and it seems alot of people are having this issue. I will flash back to stock and see if it helps, but I have a feeling it won't help.
i think its the root i mean i it did taht after i rooted i just got my replacement seeing if itll act up if not ill keep it if it does im jumping ship to buy a international galaxy s
Does your phone smoke a lot of pot?
I'm actually wondering if it doesn't have something to do with power handling with a full battery. I had to swap mine out because any time it was charged 100%, if it slept it turned off. After a few restarts or me playing with it enough to drop it below a completely full charge it was fine. I don't know, but if this new one does it I will just return it and look for something else :_(
well ricparr and anyone else i would just return your model saying its defective and get a replacement tahts what i did

Maybe some peoples reboots are on accident

Yesterday while toggling airplane mode I got a reboot. First yet and it was on gingerbread..i just had another one while accident pressing power for too long..
the phone reboots just holding power even if the screen is off. Maybe just maybe this button is getting pressed for too long I their pockets or just pressing power to toggle airplane mode and its rebooting. Or maybe something with this function bugging out...
Anyone else notice phone reboots just holding power for too long?
Edit:Im almost positive this is what caused my reboots
My phone was on the charger last night only for me wake up and it was off. Full battery when I powered it on.
Doubt its being turned off my accident.

As I said, some people.. Maybe some is legit but others are this issue..
Or like I said, something related to that. Maybe bugging out or something.. Just seems weird that holding power causes a reboot.
A lot of my reboots were spontaneous when I wasn't even touching the phone. Also when it was charging overnight.

Maybe somehow the phone off has a bug thinking the power button is being held in or just that function bugging out when the phone is off...
Dont know just a thought.but I'm positive this rebooted mine.
Definitively not by accident!! And the damn thing reboots by itself every 5mn for a few times while I was watching it doing that while plugged in, then turns off by itself in the middle oh the night, I'm getting another one, and another one until I get a working one with no light bleed. I'll receive my 3rd one in a few days.

Mine just did it again. I didn't have the problem on the stock rom, CM7, EaglesBlood or any other rom aside from the unofficial Gingerbread leak.
The rom itself it very nice considering CM7 has weird issues of its own, but resetting/locking up is a big no-no.
As I said earlier my phone was off this morning after flashing the leaked rom last night. I wiped several times this morning, flashed Eaglesblood, wiped again, and again, flashed the leaked Gingerbread, wiped and wiped again.
Set the phone up but didn't install any apps (testing). Cooked breakfast; fine, watched a TV show; fine, took a shower; fine, got dressed; fine, stepped outside for a second; locked up.
The phone was on because when I pressed the power button the touch panel lit up. The lockscreen showed for a second then went out. Then it was unresponsive. I held the power button down for a few seconds, which turned the phone off, then held it again to turn it back on.
Sucks. Must be the rom. Weird why the stock didn't do it, nor others. Others are claiming theirs are fine.
It is SO weird how these problems aren't across the board and are so random. Everything points to a kernel which wasn't included in the lacked build. Hopefully when the official one comes out, we'll get an updated kernel to go with it.
I think it's the overheating problem. My first phone was very hot and had 3 reboots in 5 days. New one I have has no reboot yet and doesn't get as hot like the other one. PCs get BSOD or freezing when overheating. G2X gets Black Screen of Death and freezing.

This could very well be. especially since a lot of people have reboots when charging and that generally makes the phones temp higher...
Luckily I'm good...
If I had the rebooting problem, I would definitely exchange my device. I haven't had any reboots or freezes though.

U could be right but my phone shuts down a few times right after charging. But then for the rest of the night it won't shut down anymore. Sometimes it shuts down in the middle of the night too, it's very randomly. How do u explain that?

I would too. That **** would annoy me...

Pattern to my reboots - do yours have a pattern?

So over the last few days my phone seems to have settled into some sort of weird pattern with reboots. Although there are outliers, in general it always seems to reboot between 19-24h of uptime and nearly always at like 45 or 50 mins past the hour. It's the most bizarre thing in the world and why I think there's some funky software doing it. I don't have true random reboots, but I can't figure out what it is that is doing this. Very odd.
In all cases my phone is sitting with the screen off (I've NEVER had a reboot while using the phone/screen on) but it doesn't matter what radios are on, WiFi, BT, GPS (can be off or on).
Last time I ran "CatLog" a logging app from Market and had it write to SD logs and a reboot happened but it only by default writes every 200 lines so the last line in the file was probably not the last line in the log. I'm going to try again later and set it to write every line or few lines so I can see the last entry in the log before a reboot. Might shine some light on it.
Just find it very strange since it's a very stable and capable phone for about 18hrs and then it just craps on itself. Very strange.
finally. I too just think it is some weird software or driver bug because I was running EB 1.0.4 FINE for like 3-4 days and loving it... then it started resetting almost hourly. I didn't install any other apps past my initial normal set of apps.
Even CM7, seems like it is fine for a few days, then gets crazy. As long as I put a new nightly rom on it every day, it's good.
I didn't have any issues with stock though and didn't seem to have issues with CM7 for a while until lately.
The leaked GB rom causes lockups immediately out of the gate seemed hourly.
I use CM7 as my main daily driver now but I think you are on to something. We are talking about the Screen of Death right? I don't think mine ever reboots, but gets stuck at the lockscreen where the the display comes up, swiping to unlock vibrates then the phone but doesn't change screens to desktop. The buttons and click/drag widgets work even though you are looking the lockscreen.
I've never had my phone powered off in my pocket or noticed it "rebooting". Mine just has the SoD that seems to follow your pattern idea. They may be related. Stock roms may reset once it locks up, where CM7 just keeps running in its locked state.
I have a really strong sneaking suspicion that every G2X reboots but not everyone notices. Also if you naturually turn your phone off once a day or so you won't notice it perhaps or even a few days. The phone reboots pretty fast and the only way I've been noticing (except the times I see/hear it happen) is I have an uptime widget on my homescreen so it's obvious.
Same thing happened with my Droid Incredible btw...when it first came out there were all kind of random reboot issues. After a software update I would run that phone hard for 30-45 DAYS straight without a reboot.
It's annoying but I think it's just a matter of time before the G2X is the same.
I just hope that update gets here sooner than later.

I dunno. The tmobile jingle is pretty loud and I never hear it. CM7 has a silent one so possibly there but I dunno.
I use my phone pretty often and never had the suspicious that it reboots. My phone stays very cool during my usage compared to my nexus and other phones
My uptime was 4 hours since I reset it last. I'll monitor it with results. It'll be hard not to flash but I'll keep track and see how far I can keep it online.
i have not had any reboots or waking up to a dead phone ....with the only fix is a battery pull.... ever since I started.
1) my over night charging / long term charging to 100%... only on the LG charger that it came with. Only short term...maybe. less than an hour and not to a 100% charge on a non LG charger (car charger etc...)
2) I restart my G2x every morning when I take it off the LG charger..(after I take it off..I did it once while on the charger and had an issue... (there is definitely an issue related to when it charges to/ around 100% charge)
Just my 2 cents.
Pattern to my reboots - do yours have a pattern?
Hold Power and volume up simultaneously for about 10 seconds.
I've had my phone since Friday, but the only time I had the rebooting problem was this past Saturday when it rebooted four times within 15 minutes or so. Before the rebooting began, the phone had slowed down to a crawl, so I went ahead and rebooted it. After that, I sat it down and watched it reboot a few times on its own. Luckily my iPhone 4 owning co-worker was completely unaware of this issue since we tease and bicker with each other every day over Android and iOS .

I can guarantee that mine don't reboot. I've had it up fire days, checked the up time and play with it constantly.if it rebooted in the middle of the night I would hear it or the uptime would be close to zero in the morning..
I have a way stable phone.running stock, rooted with bloat removed.. I love this damn stable phone.

Everything other than smart share, tegra zone and qik. Of course have nova and need for speed also.
Oh also have car home froze..
Maybe jumping the gun here but I tried to let mine go as long as it could without resetting it. I kept tabs on it and it was running awesome the entire time (#33 CM7).
Last time I noticed my phone on was like 17:33:xx hours. I had like 44% battery left. Next thing I know the phone is off. I tried turning it on and a battery icon flashed and turned back off.
What I am thinking is that perhaps the faulty battery driver is telling the phone that the battery is dead and preventing it from booting up. We were talking in another thread and I said something that really makes sense: If the battery driver tells the OS that there is 0% battery then it will just reboot. The battery itself may have a 50% charge left. That would explain the random reboots too (the battery driver telling the phone there is 1% left and cutting power). Maybe a hard reset semi-corrects the problem but eventually resets again due to false information.
My weirdness/powered off occurred right around 18hours. The phone could have just died too.
Almost need a Voltmeter so someone can test the battery (or however it can be tested).

Yes I know the battery driver is part of the problem as can be seen on CM7 builds but what's odd is my time varies so for a long time it would reboot every 17-20 hours, now all of a sudden it goes to 36 hours before it usually reboots. Looking at logs it doesn't appear to throw any major errors before a reboot which implies that it's a a kernel panic or low-level fault. At this point I've given up on trying to find the issue since it's been repeated over and over that T-Mo and LG are releasing an update. Might as well enjoy the phone and wait for that to come out
Amen. Just keep flashing CM nightlies and you'll never worry about it.

Post what you were doing when your g2X locked up

I'm starting to keep a log every time my g2x locks up where I write down the date, time and what I was doing when it happened to get an idea of what could be causing it to happen and to get an idea of how often it happens.
If you want to do this as well, please post which rom you are using and which firmware.
So far, I've logged this once when I was opening a site in the android browser.
Using Cyanogenmod 7 with Gingerbread 2.3.4
About to get on star tours, pulled it out of my pocket to check mousewait.

I have had re boots every now and then.
Freezes and screen locks just seemed to start last week, and now today, my phone seems to shut off the screen 30 seconds after boot.
The touch buttons work fine as well as the sound and vibrate. When I hold down the off button I feel it vibrate as it does when the menu pops up, but the screen does not show.
I'm kind of clueless what changed to make this happen.
bionix..
Listening to Pandora for around 30min. Turned on the screen to check battery level. Was getting low. Plugged it into the wall charger. Phone rebooted. Had headphones plugged in.
Turned off screen. Waited a minute. Usually worked.
G2x with faux AOSP and faux orange kernel. [email protected] 5107 quadrant.
I've been consistently logging what I was doing when the phone locks up (which is no more than once per day) and it seems that my G2X has always locked up while browsing in the android browser except for 1 instance where it locked up in the Firefox app.
Has anyone else noticed this as well ? I am keeping up with the latest builds of CyanogenMod hoping that these bugs will get worked out.
On the bright side, the problem where the audio doesn't work until you reboot the phone seems to have gone away. I guess that it's been fixed in the latest builds.

Glad I'm not the only one...
I just put the phone back in the box I bought it in.
I stopped using custom ROMS when streaming radios just lagged or skipped. Now granted, at least in Stock ROM, the radio stream lag and skips stopped. It pisses me of that Slacker Radio will not work on G2x. I tried almost ever ROM. I think its the phone or the silly app. The crashes/freeze, especially on stock android browser was the last straw for me.
I had it and locked it up until the LG updates the device.
On myTouch 4g until then.
I was texting and this POS just decided to lock up.
I went to unlock the screen and this POS locked up.
I was scrolling through apps and this POS decided to lock up.
Sorry for the agression but im borederline done with this phone, 3rd shipped one.

Finally someone who is in the same boat as me. I'm trying all kinds of different things to pinpoint the cause because it's very obvious that it's related to some software that's time based - runs at specific intervals. I get either freezes in standby or reboots almost every night in the middle of the night - like 3-4AM or so. HOWEVER, I use the crap out of the phone during the day (every feature, kill it all) and it hangs tough and runs great. So it's not hardware for sure. Will post if I find anything.
I was dropping a deuce when it locked up.

Unlocking the screen, charging off of AC or USB, texting, browsing, doing nothing sitting on my desk or in my pocket... umm... let's see... just about ANYTHING at any given time. Let's not forget the random reboots that happen multiple times a day and sometimes goes for 2 or 3 days without doing it. Battery pulls becoming more frequent then with my old BB. Getting to be ridiculous.
Let me not forget I have tried every damned kernel/ROM combo out there. Stock rooted, etc... on my third phone and they have all experienced the same problems. Different batteries as well both factory stock and aftermarket. At this point I am just waiting for LG to do something. If not when the SGS II comes out I will just get that and demand a refund from T-Mobile for selling me this wonderful brick of a phone.
Mine always locks up when in browser visiting xda forums. The progress bar hits 50% and everything freezes. I have to press power several times before it gets back to normal.
Guys,
Are you guys using CyanogenMod ? This was happening to me a lot on the stock ROM but since I upgraded to CyanogenMod, I've been having maybe 1 lock up per day but sometimes less then that. I'd really recommend trying it out if you aren't using it already.
My dog fell asleep on it and it must have overheated. I pulled the battery and it wouldn't boot past the CM7 lg boot screen. Luckily I had a nandroid of dark sinister 1.1. Bet it kept the pooch warm though.

[Q] Bootloops after battery empties

Hi everyone, I've got a Nexus S 4g, SPH-D720.
This is the second time this happened to me: my phone's battery reached 0% and turned off, I turned it back on after plugging it in, and it turned off again for some reason. Tried to turn it back on, got stuck in a bootloop.
(I was running Apex 1.1.2 at the time that this happened, but it has happened before when I was on CM 9 v4.0 as well. The first time, I was using a calibrator app that told me I had more battery left than my phoen was displaying, so after it powered off I took the battery out and put it back in multiple times to see if the phone would turn on. It didn't. However, I did not do that this time, but the same thing happened.)
I tried clearing cache and flashing the same rom over the current one, but the loop persisted, and the only way to get my phone back was to do a data wipe/factory restore and reinstall everything from scratch.
The first time this happened, I had last backed my app up via Titanium 2 days prior. After the first time, I set Titanium to make backups every night, so the only thing I lost were a few text messages.
Now, I'm afraid to turn my phone if the battery dies in case this happens again and I have to erase everything. Is there any way I can figure out what the problem is? I suspect it is the ClockworkMod Touch Recovery (v 5.8.0.2), but has anyone else had this issue?
I appreciate you taking your time to read all the way through this.
What setting do you have cpu at? If its set too high your system cant handle the boot process correctly. If theres no power to handle the load itll reset itself. Wait until you get at least a solid bar or completely full and start your phone. Dont trust apps to properly tell you your battery percentage.

I forgot to add. The recovery is not causing the problem it has to do with battery and/ or rom/ kernel. And its not good for battery to constantly be run to zero. Thats why theres a warning to plug your phone in at a certain percentage.

Processor is set to 100 min 1200 max. Yeah, I did have the same kernel so that's probably it. I'll try not to turn my phone on until it's charged while off. Thanks!
(btw, the "app" I was using was a battery calibrator script)
Your welcome and i was having issues the same way and turned off set on boot and it didnt happen again. Some of these phones are touchy! im sure you know about scripting if you did it! Lol
