Can Motorola be coming out with a Quad Core Nvidia Tegra 3 tablet in early fall? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just read these rumors today. If this is true that Motorola might be the first to adopt the Tegra 3 quad core processor chip onto a tablet for a early Q3 fall release, I might hold off in buying my motorola xoom. The Tegra 3 chip is suppose to be released in August to manufacturers to put on tablets and smartphones and contains 3x faster graphics than the Tegra 2 with a 1.5 GHz max frequency. Check out the first link for the Nvidia roadmap for this year.
What do you guys think? Would you hold off in buying your xoom if this was true?

i would definitely wait on the tegra3 tablet.

I'm hoping they do, I'll sell my Xoom for one, love Moto hardware.

I am kinda torn on these new rumors. Part of me wants to get the xoom now and be done with it so I can start customizing it and playing with it. The other part of me thinks it might be smart just to wait a few more months especially if they say they will try to aim for a sept release of a quad core xoom. I would love to have the Tegra 3 processor since it has 3x graphics, supports higher resolution with blu-ray support, and 1.5Ghz max frequency.
I guess I'll stick to my plan of test driving the wifi xoom until june (90 days return policy at costo) and then re-evaluate the other tablets and make a decision by end of june.
Hopefully by june, there will be more news if these rumors are real or not.

So even if they release the chips to tablet manufactures in August, how long until we see a tablet using one? December? January? March? Later?
I'll enjoy my Xoom now, and when we finally see a Tegra 3...then I'll upgrade.
These tablets aren't nearly expensive enough to justify waiting around imo.
Besides, once the "Quad-Core Tegra 3" comes out, you know there will be rumors of a hex-core Tegra 4...how long will you wait?
Now if you don't need a tablet now, or are hard up for cash...by all means...

If you wait for the latest and greatest you will never own anything. 1 month after tegra 3 there will be tegra 5 already getting ready for production.

If you see the second story, the rumor is that motorola will try to be the first manufacturer to produce a tablet that uses the tegra 3 processor and the ship date around september which isn't too far away.
If the rumor said that tablets will not use the tegra 3 processor until next april, then there is no point in waiting.

Well I hope Verizon will let me upgrade to the Xoom 2.Every time I look at my account for the Xoom it clearly states "upgrade now".So we shall see.

Remember these same type of sources were predicting The Bionic would be out in Jan/Feb in the fall last year. Just have to figure out if you want a tablet now or not.

i love my Brandi aka Xoom to much to swich. But if they do release it. We looking a Feb or March of next year. I'm good for now. Moving on to the next question.

Yep I figure that it would come out next year if it does.

No absolutely not, because I have a XOOM now and I will be able to enjoy it until the new product is available. Then I will sell my XOOM to someone who doesn't always want the newest latest bleeding edge thing to subsidize the cost of my newest latest bleeding edge thing.
Thank you!

I agree on this 100%.. That's just how it is on the technology biz.. Once the new technology has been released, a better technology will be in line to get introduced not long after by the competitors.. And the good thing about us early adopters is that when upgrading time is up, we can sell our old device to get the new one, and those who wait ends up buying our old device from us.. Now the question is, which of the two would you wanna be?

It's my opinion that these rumors are being propagated by Moto/Android/Tablet competitors. Maybe Apple, but even more likely, places a little closer to home...like direct Moto Xoom competitors like Samsung and LG.
Think about it: how many games have come out that TRULY take advantage of dual core? How many games or apps have been released that truly take advantage of Honeycomb?
So many that we are all clamoring for quad core??? I think not. Not by a long shot.
Is Motorola working on a quad core device for release someday??? I'm sure they are, just like all manufacturers are. BUT dual core is where we are at and these rumors do NOTHING but stunt Xoom sales.
Now, who would do something like that? Google? Nope. Moto?? Nope.
I'll tell you who...the manufacturers who are all late to the game like Samsung who had to pull their 10.1 tablet and come up with a whole new one to even try and compete. LG maybe? Apple??
I cannot say, but something smells rotten. This bull**** rumor comes out to coincide with the Xoom WiFi launch is just too cute by half. Think about it for just a second: WiFi Xoom launches on 27th...on the 28th rumors of a Moto quad core come out???? That is no coincidence.
Somebody doesn't want us buying Xooms. And these same people will love selling us dual core devices in a few months when the rumors(they started) of Moto quad core have died out.

The shame of it is, if you delay your purchase waiting for the next great thing, you'll never buy, because as soon as it's released the next great thing vX.0 will be announced. Look at PC's over the years and how they've evolved, and continue to do so. Just too bad the tabs don't have socketed CPUs to upgrade.

Love the responses by everyone. Just wanted to know what your guys thoughts were. Most likely, I'll buy my wifi xoom to keep in june.
I bought the wifi xoom at costco to test drive it for 90 days to see if I like it. Then I plan to return it and test out the other tablets that are coming out in june. If I like the xoom still, I'll just buy it from amazon to use my gift card balance and no tax.

Well put, I'm not buyin that it would drop this year. Wouldn't be a good move for Motorola.

Imagine what this will be like in 4 - 5 years.
Man, I heard someone was coming out with a Tegra 3000 Deluxe edition. Can't wait! I'm just going to use my Moto RAZR until then, winning!

It won't be hardware that gets people to jump. A 4-core only runs faster, but a new Android rev will have more features. If Goog sticks to the 6-month cycle, then I-whazit would be a nice addition to that quad, hopefully in yuletide wrappings. We'll see if the early adopters have the stamina to keep up.

Haven't seen this link posted yet:
nVidia Kal-El
I am pretty sure we will have those chips in shipping products for Christmas shopping season. I think nVidia can execute well and it should have an easier time getting some design wins since the Tegra2 got Google's blessing.
One thing to remember is that Tegra2 is pretty old at this point, it was announced more then a year ago and did not really have any design wins until Google decided to use the SOC for Honeycomb. Now it would be foolish to think that Google chose this SOC without looking at roadmaps. It would also be foolish to think that Honeycomb cannot benefit from quad cores as the heavy lifting for multi threading is already done.
My personal point of view is the following, either be an early adopter and jump on the XOOM as soon as you can or wait for the holiday season. No matter how good the Samsung's look, it wouldn't touch them. I see them as 1.5 generation devices that will be released to close to Google I/O and most likely IceCream.
If you wait for holiday season, you should have a much more polished OS, hardware as well as a much more competitive landscape with better prices. My hunch is that we will see a Google Nexus Tab with quad core Kal-el somewhere in time for back to school/holidays. This would be very similar to the Droid with Android 2.0 to Nexus One with 2.1.
I was going for the XOOM wifi, but with lack of Honeycomb AOSP and a lack of real need for this device, I will wait...I could be wrong and we'll only know in six months or so!
TL;DR: By Xoom now or wait for holidays.

Asus developing Tegra 3 quad-core tablet for summer launch?
Not likely. What I've read is that nVidia won't have the chip ready to distribute until later this year.
The chips have to be made before tablets can be made using them. Not quite a chicken or egg kinda thing, you gotta have the chip (and adequate stock of it) to build a product using it.
I don't expect anything until possibly late Q3 if not Q4.
Yep, Asus have said that it'll be an Autumn launch. Either way, I can't afford the Transformer right now so I'll probably get its big brother when it launches.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
there are two new tablets coming in the summer but they'll be tegra 2. Tegra 3 launches late summer with tablets coming q3 or q4
The person that wrote the ZDnet story unfortunately didn't read the Digitimes story correctly.
Digitimes said the ASUS Slider and Memo (Tegra 2) tablets will be released this summer. AND that ASUS is working on a Tegra 3 tablet, but gave no time frame for the Tegra 3 tablet.
I doubt we'll see any Tegra 3 devices ship this year.
Maybe spring/summer 2012 lol.
Seriously stop believing the pro Apple press! First the UK June delay was reported as if it was a US delay, then they did the same thing with July ( I even saw a few reports of August lol), then Engadget says there's no gps (pulls the story minutes later), and now this. If you read the original source, Tegra 3 tablets have absolutely nothing to do with the upcoming EP102 (Tegra 2 based) and EP71 (Qualcomm based) in that article. I personally feel stories like this, from ZDNet (and many others), are an attempt to confuse consumers who aren't sure which tablet to buy and more importantly a smear tactic to limit Asus sales. There are other examples besides the ones I posted above as well. Needless to say, these stories aren't working.

If I rember right Nvidia was talking about having tablets with this chip, Kal-El
out in the fall. I do not know if this means testers or real tablets. Just hope that
Asus does bring one out.
Motorola wanted to have Xoom with Kal-El this year.

Transformer 2 apparently coming out in a month or so, This transformer already outdat

Since i just read about the Transformer 2, seems like this transformer is already outdated, and i was planning to buy this in a few weeks. Do you guys know any REAL information leading to REAL facts saying that this transformer 2 will come out in september or october?

Truthfully, there are no real facts when waiting for a new product. Dates may and will change.
EEE Pad Transformer sent this
Link to the source?
ive heard from nvidia and asus that this MAY happen and there is no real data
the next asus is said to have the kal-el chipset from nvidia not out till sept or oct with means the next tablet wont come out till even later then that if the #2 is coming out at all soon
but some of the data from the kal-el chip set is that is runs 1ghz quad core but nothing else is know about this tablet so dont keep your hopes up
kal-el will probably arrive as late as Q1 2012
Indeed, I ordered my TF on friday and happy with my decision. If you start waiting the next device, you will NEVER buy one, cause after TF2 is announced (my guess is Q1/2012, plus the wait to buy the damn device), someone will announce newer model, that has something better than TF2 and will come out in next few months. Then you start waiting that too?
Also there is NO official information about the release of TF2!
Just buy TF now!
Kal-el is quad core, but even now only few programs take advance in dual core, and still plenty of power to run anything. Dunno if there is any other new technology in that chip (and bugs)...
Imo the only differences could and would be video performance.But.. what about that additional battery drain?
But then again, what's coming new in icecream sandwich we don't know 100% so maybe a full new layout that could even utlizie desktop apps. Here's something of interest http://www.gottabemobile.com/2011/08/02/asus-confirms-eee-pad-transformer-2/ quite small though.
Imo transformer 2 next year, because think about it if they release it now at the same price as transformer 1 many people would be quite mad epically now as it's only just has come to Australia.
I would say "outdated" only when a new has actually hits the market. Not even when officially announced. But even then you would have to compare the price tags. Nothing prohibits Asus to sell a cheaper less powerful model and in parallel a "newer" more powerful one with a higher price.
As bytetemplar wrote there will always be a newer model in a few months time.
So grab yourself some deal (or not, the price is still very competitive with respect to other brands) and start enjoying the TF101 today.
Edit: For the same street price you can now have the HP TouchPad if you wanna go with webOS
The Slider and the Memo were anounced for a very long time now and they are not released yet, so i think that 1 month is to optimistic.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium App
A quote from that article..."Of course, coming months is completely ambiguous"
Just saying.........
Honestly, how long do you think it took them to make the transformer? Consider that Viewsonic had the GTab out a good what? 7 or 8 months before the Asus Transformer hit the market. And a good 4 months before the Xoom hit the market. All things considered, I'd be surprised if we see a Transformer 2 based on a Tegra 3 (Kal-el) before years end. I'd be surprised if we see it before Q2 of 2012. Not only does it take time to integrate everything, you still have to build up the software. They won't be able to just throw HC3.2 (or ICS) on it right away.
I'd be willing to bet, the only way we'd see a TF2 before 2012 is if they used another SOC (ie MSM8xxx or a OMAP4) and already have it in hand and have finished the hardware RIGHT NOW. Otherwise, you're looking into 2012 for a new product.
Like someone else said, if you want a tablet and are considering the Transformer, then buy it. If you want to wait for the next best thing, you'll always be waiting for the next best thing. First you'll wait for Tegra 3, then you'll wait for Tegra 4...etc...Just buy it and use it and be happy. The only time I'll start considering upgrading, is when the TF no longer gets updates (be it from Asus or from the community).
the only transformer that will be coming out very soon is the 3G version, kal-el dev boards aren't easily accessible yet, let alone a consumer device
Asus Benelux says on facebook end of 2011 but probably it will hit us in Q1 2012.
Nice discussion. Im also waiting for Transformer 2, but you are right, just buy it now or wait forever.
Also, do we know when will the 3G version hit the stores??
the big problem with this is waiting after it will be available to buy
u will have to wait more to get good kernel root bootloader hack
and what about new os of android ICS u will wait more to become stable
thats lots of waiting oh and dont forget apps for it and more and more....
right now u have nice thing with all u might need and ready to use
so why wait
tf1 is enuf for most of uses grab one and let other wait
And the delay game begins....
http://www.bgr.com/2011/08/18/asus-quad-core-eee-pad-transformer-2-reportedly-delayed/
Don't worry, with the 3g version only just being released. Expect the transformer 2 to hit the stores around early q2 2012 otherwise Asus won't have enough time to soak up all the sales juice Plus all the angry rage from the tf101 users

Even if I hadn't just bought this TF in late May, I wouldn't buy first-run production of the new one. I learned my lesson on the first iteration -- any more TF purchases will be delayed until all the bugs are out.

Just buy the ipad 2. I hear it's the best tablet out there.
Nov 9 is the official announcement date of the TF2. Only asus knows when the official release date (when it's available for the public) will be.

What Tablet Should I Wait For?

Whats the next big tablet? 2 months maybe even 6? i may wait 6 months for one.
is there anything great coming?
sell me a tablet plz lol
Nothing too groundbreaking has been announced but if you keep waiting, something will just end up replacing what you just got within a month or so.
My advice is get one of Transformer tablets, OG or Prime, get the dock and have fun.
depends on what os you want. i've heard ipad3 is in the makings. if you want something now though go for the transformer prime. still pretty new with a quad-core. (antutu benchmarks have the tf prime up to 10,000 vs xoom @ 4500 or my TP @ 5500)

seems like you're never really on top of the chain. as soon as you buy something, a new tablet will come out shortly thereafter and give you a case of buyer's remorse
just get one which you enjoy
...Or you can wait for the rumored Galaxy Tab 11.6 which has a super high-res display and a dual core A15 soc.
Get a hp touchpad and pop cm7 on it?
If you need one now, I'd either go for the Transformer Prime or Galaxy Tab 7.7(amazing screen). While the former might be more future proof, the latter sure has the edge when it comes to display quality.

Transformer Prime is the best out ATM, nothing else as good has really been announced.
If you decide to wait for the next great new tablet you may be waiting a while.
I don't think Google will be able to do anything with Motorola for quite a bit of time (possibly even until 2013)
I am definitely interested in getting a tablet but I want to wait for something with native ICS support and high res. I don't (really) have internet at home and plan to use it as an offline, media consumption device. I am the type tho that will keep waiting and never actually buy one because I am waiting for something better.
thanx for the help guys, im still not sure what i would want though.
i was going to buy the transformer, but i want to wait for the second one to be released.

should i wait for the rumored tablets?

nvidia is going to release the $199 tablet called "Kai"
google is going to release the Nexus tablet
amazon is going to release the "kindle ice" or a bigger kindle fire
apple is going to release the iPad mini
also rumors about iOS 6 and Android 5 will be released
and everything is gonna happen in this year
while the tf300 is really a good tablet, but should i wait for these things above?
regardless of tablets coming out this year especially a few of the ones you listed (nexus $199 tab, new kindle fire, ipad mini) none of them are gonna have as good of specs as this (probably). And so this wil FOR SURE run Android 5.0, and if you overclock it itll hold up against some of the later year competitiors. I wouldnt hesitate unless you really wanna get the TF700 when it comes out.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T
I'm pretty sure the Kai tablet is just a reference design, possibly even the base for the Nexus tablet; it's almost certainly not being released for consumers. I haven't heard anything about a new Kindle tablet, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happened. They have to release a new one eventually.
Really, it doesn't even matter if you wait for the next crop of tablets. By the time they come out, there will be new rumours about better tablets. Where will you draw the line? How patient are you?
I personally don't care about any of those other tablets. I got a nice piece of hardware at a nice price. Can't ask for much more when buying computer hardware. There's always going to be something greater and better on the horizon.
The thing I am curious about is Windows 8. That could be a game changer for tablets. Will be much more significant than any piece of hardware. Or it will be a disaster. Never can tell with MS.

Well, in the past day or so; we got all but confirmation (from a benchmark from the 'nexus tablet') that the next ieteration of android will be "JellyBean 4.1"
and it will most likely debut this summer at Google I/0.
Theres no way that an OS that is set to debut this summer would NOT run on a tablet that is not even 2 months old. Our tablet has the some of the best specs on the market right now!

LG G3 Prime?

I was about a day away from upgrading my AT&T Samsung GS3 to the LG G3 until I heard whispers of the updated Prime being released for the US at the Berlin IFA show. Anyone else hear anything else more substantial about it? Best Buy has the G3s on sale for $99 right now but if the phone is going to get a prime version I'd rather wait for that to see what they update....
Every phone will eventually be replaced by better version. If you are going to always wait like this you are going to have bad time.

Honestly this phone has everything i need, honestly a phone with more power right now is a bit overkill cause i don't think there is an app in which you need all of this processing power but if you haven't upgraded yet and you can wait until it comes out then more power to you cause i can tell you that this phone is awesome and with more speed it will feel better if not the same, but a newer phone might also mean that the bootloader unlock will take longer to achieve and root to cause they might fix everything that was good to exploit right now we are looking close to bootloader unlock or at least there is solid progress, but it's your pick man get an awesome phone at a discount or get the same phone with a bit more power at a later date at a more expensive price

I disagree with some of these statements.
First you have to ask yourself, what will you get out of a new device which your not getting in your current one?
Now that you've answered this, browse the phones that meet these prerequisites.
Read reviews, see which one has better res., faster processor, whatever meets YOUR needs, not necessarily the markets.
Look at the manufacturors' credentials to get a feel for how well they provide things like updates, support, etc.
Once you've made a decision, go for it. I came from the S4 to this since I bricked it... but typically I will wait a processor generation(1-2 years). Went from having a single core, to dual core, quad core, but f*ed up my phone, so I got a beefed up quad that was appeasing.
WHAT ARE YOUR NEEDS is my main point, sometimes there is never enough processing power for someone who has 5 email accounts, all of the common social networking apps && a high-process running launcher. It all depends on what you do with your device, but 3-6 months after the release of the first generation processor of it's kind is my rule of thumb...
My personal opinion & 2 cents worth. If I knew there was a prime coming out in two weeks from the day I was about to get this phone, I would hold out as well lol
Lol well i just bought the phone and im not up for renewal until 2 years again so i have to stick with this amazing LG G3 regardless .
Pulled the trigger on the G3 and I'm definitely happy with the phone. Especially since it was only 50 bucks with the best buy sale and a gift card. Love it so far.

Personally, I think you made a sound choice. From what I've been able to gather, the only difference in the Prime version, if it is even made available in the US, is that it will have an 805 processor. It was designed for the markets that use the cat6 lte band, which the US doesn't have. The 805 is supposed to have a better and more efficient graphics processor, but that doesn't mean a whole lot to me be a use I don't do much gaming. You might see a slight bump in performance and battery life, but we're probably still months away from seeing it in the states. By that time, the G4 will already be close, as well as devices with the 810 (I saw an article about it on DL today). I'm perfectly happy with the G3, and once the bootloader is unlocked (which appears to be soon, according to posts in the Bounty threads), I will be entertained for several months until we see the next gen devices.

Agreed. Don't get caught up in semi generational devices. You don't get your $'s worth, your off meaningful product cycles, and frankly creating a satisfaction hole you will never fill.
As soon as this boot loader is unlocked. I'm selling my M8 GPE and sticking with this until next year when my "Next Plan" with the carrier is finished.

this phone will last you more than those 2 years with Android L, ART, + root.
hoping for Xposed version compatible with ART and this is one smooth phone
I'm probably not going to even root it until an android L ROM comes out. I don't mind the optimus UI.

There is no reason for LG to release it in the US. When it was released LG said they have no plans to have it outside of Korea. I think it should come to the US but I don't think it will. I have one coming from Korea in a few days which is what you should do if you want one. Also if you order it from Korea you get a spare battery, battery charger and headphones with the phone.
