Hey everyone,
I'm considering a wifi only tablet for my birthday (April 23rd), and naturally the now popularized Motorola Xoom popped into my head as a first choice. The question is, is it already being trumped? I've heard of numerous other Honeycomb tablets coming out that have equally (if not exceedingly) impressive specs and similar pricetags, such as the Acer Iconia and Galaxy Tab 10.1.
All in all, I want to know, what makes the Xoom worth it (if it is worth it)? Why have people been eating up this tablet in lieu of other impressive competitors around the corner?
I've never owned a Motorola product before, so if someone could elaborate on the quality of their products, I suppose that would help in deciding as well!
Thanks for your input in advance.
EDIT: Please, no one suggest the iPad; if I had any questions concerning that toy, I could just walk into the nearest coffee shop.
Buy what you can and when you can. Technology waits for no one. It might be the best now, tomorrow who knows.
Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery. Live for today....
I agree, sure there will be better ones that come out and they probably will be cheaper. But the xoom is here now. Even if I knew the samsung was going to be just as good and half the price I would not wait 3 months with no tablet to save the money. I guess it depends on your financial situation but frankly if you are worried about your finances you probably should not get any tablet as it not something really anyone "needs". But even though I don't need it, if I lost mine I would buy a new one the same day to replace it. It depends on what makes you happy, the xoom makes me happy so its a easy decision for me, regardless of how others may think of it.
Every day I have it it just gets more and more useful and enjoyable for me. When netflix hits its going to better, when more tablet apps hit its going to be better, when os updates come out its going to be better, the future is still pretty bright for the xoom even though new tablets are coming.

Good thing is you have choices! LG Moto Samsung. I personally wouldn't trust LG or Acer. There is no telling when or if you would receive updates and accessories. Motorola and Samsung would be my front runners. The Xoom is here now and you can read through the forums to gage how well people like it. Samsung is a little ways away but cheaper with similiar specs. I can't wait so its Xoom here.
Do your research and weigh the pros and cons of each device. Decide what features you find more important and make your decision based on that information. We could tell you all day long which device we would buy but its all about personal preference. You gotta carry thing around for 6-12 months not us.

I would go to a best buy and play with the xoom for a while. get a good feel for the hardware and see if you like the size of the device. You mmay find it too big or heavy. From what I hear about the Samsung galaxy 8.9, it may be the one to get in a few months. The LG to me is priced too high and wouldn't dare think about getting a tablet on contract. Acer and some of the others have been unproven and will have to prove something if I'm going to chose them over the competition that has built a good reputation with android over the last few years.

no point in waiting. By the time Samsung gets here, there will be another even more impressive tablet coming.
It is similar with me and when the Nikon D300s came out. I was puzzle on should I get D300s or wait for D400 or maybe something else.
Look at this way, I got the Nikon D300s...was able to play with it and took all those great pictures with it, that I would not have been able to during that period of me waiting.
So, either buy the Xoom now and enjoy having the use of it...or wait until price drop and think back of all those days you've lost not having the fun of having it. What makes it worst to wait, the minute you buy it...it either get discontinued or replace with something better. Technology waits for no one. Get it while it is hot.

From what I have read I would say that the xoom still has the better specs. Maybe I am missing something but the pricing is similar, run the same processor and ram, same screen Res and size (although I am sure samsungs screen is more vivid), and both have micro ad slots. The xoom however has 3g (upgradeable to lte 4g which is worth the price of admission right there if you ask me), is unlockeable and most of all isn't running a horrible skin like touchwiz. I can guarentee the developer support will be greater for the xoom than any of the Samsung tabs. The only spec I see that is slightly bwtter than the xoom is the screen and the 8.9 should cost a little less and have a little better pixel debsity. Oh and the Samsung tabs are a little lighter but that is a complete non issue to me. If you want a Tablet that will.never get upgrades and run a horrible laggy, cartoony, iphoney screen then get Samsung. I still think the xoom is by far the better Tablet and won't be trumped until quad core kilel (did I spell that right?) Processors are released.
I have had the xoom since release and I actually pay to have data plan so I can't comment on wifi only (and who can it's not out but from what I have seen it is the exact same just missing support 3g/4g chip. I personally want/need 4g so I purchased put right, but for most wifi will work fine. You can always go.month to month and the extra 200 to me was much worth knowing that one day Verizon lte will be powering this beast making it all the more better than the competition. The android tablet world is just starting and I really think that the xoom is the Nexus one of tablets and that is one of the main reasons I purchased it and after Sammy announced their lineup with touchwiz on board I think this (and LG) will be some of the only stock vanilla honeycomb tablets the market will ever see especially where iit is fully inlockeable. I would suggest the xoom to anyone and the 599 price point is perfect. Let me know if you have any questions and good luck in your future decision. Hope this helps even a little bit

Agree with everything you said, except: the Galaxy Tab 10.1 32GB wifi-only will be $599, just like the Xoom. So pricing is actually identical. The existence of a $499 16GB Galaxy Tab 10.1 might be attractive to some folks, but it won't of course be the same thing.
And I know Samsung did a really good job of going back and redesigning the Galaxy Tab given the iPad 2's strengths. But what did they cut to make the thing so much thinner, lighter and, as they implied in their statements, cheaper?
I think from what I see, the two factors that get me interested in Galaxy are
1) The much brighter and vibrant screen
2) lighter than xoom
But knowing Samsung and their support level or lack there of...Xoom might be a better choice....
I personally don't care for touchwiz, and the molasses pace that Samsung produces updates is criminal. Buying a device with an OS as new as Honeycomb from a manufacturer with a proven record of bad post-production software support seems like a bad idea to me.
Also, last I checked the 10.1V (teh stock android 3.0 version) does not have microSD
I will reiterate what another use stated, head down to Best Buy and get your hands on the XOOM to get a feel for the size and weight. I've done this a few times and the more I do the more I like it. Initially it feels a little heavy but you get used to it.
The XOOM is here now, the price will be similar to other 10" Honeycomb devices coming out and many of the coming devices will have custom overlays. (TouchWiz) I'd rather have the XOOM as it's a Google Experience device and will likely be the first device to get updates.
I think touch wiz should be least of concern. I think they confirmed that 10.1 will go live w/o touch wiz and it is an optional add on patch if you chose to.
Beside, touch wiz or not, root and replace with other launcher if dont like it.

I completely disagree, especially on such a new OS that will be receiving frequent, important updates.
The 10.1V will be stock android (this is the fatter version with the better camera and no SD card)
The super slim 8.9 and 10.1 will be touchwiz 4.0

the 10.1v was the one that came out at MWC before Samsung did a big re-design to make it thinner and smoother.
Then they released the new 10.1 and 8.9 as the "US Versions" at CTIA a few days ago.
It should be said that we really don't know which models or if any will be coming with TouchWiz4.0 on them. We have a whole 2 months before the new 10.1 even comes out. A lot can change in that time, and as far as Google is concerned you're not allowed to change Honeycomb's UI, so we'll have to see as that pans out.
Guys, I just wanted to mention that LG is apparently creating a nexus/purely Google tablet - slated to be the *real* "Nexus One" of tablets and receive the according amount of updates... the question is , how reputable is LGs hardware? Truthfully, because the Xoom and the Nexus tab will both run AOSP honeycomb, I doubt updates will come slower to the Xoom from the dev community or the manufacturer.

Just read an article that pointed to Best Buy for a new Asus 10 inch android tablet with better specs than our beloved gTabs for $400. And... it's already got honeycomb.
Asus Eee Pad Transformer tablet
Acer Iconia A500
The Asus Transformer is delayed for a U.S. launch now until the end of this month due to supply shortages.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/13/asus-apologizes-for-eee-pad-transformer-delay-it-wont-detail-u/
I *really* hope they can release it at $400, the recent video preview (Via Slashgear) made it pretty attractive (to me at least).
This is one of the devices I was eyeing. Allegedly it has an IPS screen as well. Anyone who's read my posts long enough knows how badly I want an IPS screen.
Yep, the Eee Pad Transformer looks like a winner to me.

I guess we'll have to wait for someone here to get one in their hands and do a proper review.
If it gets love from the creative folks at xda then I may sell off my second gTab and pick one of these up once it's released to the public.
and im now disappointed in my gtab before i even get it, thanks alot!
hopefully it cant be rooted =D
At this price I'm interested as well. I have a couple of friends who are interested in my Gtablet with the Vegan rom and accessories for around $300. If Honeycomb isn't available for the Gtab by the time this comes out I may make the switch.
Isn't it being released April 6th? 5 days?!?!

Don't be. It's $285 (assuming you are a Woot! user) and this ASUS device has NOT been released yet. It may not show up for a month, or longer.
The GTAB will be dated one day, but that's going to happen for all electronics, it's unavoidable.
That dock (that basically turns the tablet into a laptop) looks sweet! Even though the price for the dock hasn't been announced (at least not to my knowledge) I want it.
Also, the fact the tablet comes with an HDMI port on it rather than relying on the dock is also pretty cool.
It will be very interesting indeed to get the review when someone here can get their hands on it.
If I can confirm this will be available for $400 @ Best Buy next week, I will be putting my gtab on craigslist ASAP and coughing up the $115 extra for IPS screen with honeycomb!

Don't be, man. If you always want the latest and greatest, you will never buy anything at all. Ever. With the number of companies in the world and how fast they are moving in research and development, whatever you buy will always be outdated.
Personally, I think the gtab is good for me for at least a few years.

I would wait to see the reviews. The Motorola Xoom (honeycomb) out of the box wasn't as zippy as our gTabs.
And besides, you got a helluva deal on your gTAB purchase compared to early adopters like me that paid the $400 on them in November/December of last year. Who knows, if you get your gTab and put a custom ROM on it (I'm running VEGAn 5.1.1) you may decide to wait a while before you fork out that extra $115.
I have thirty days to return gtablet to Sears looks like I might do so and get Asus

Truthfully, there are no real facts when waiting for a new product. Dates may and will change.
EEE Pad Transformer sent this
Link to the source?
ive heard from nvidia and asus that this MAY happen and there is no real data
the next asus is said to have the kal-el chipset from nvidia not out till sept or oct with means the next tablet wont come out till even later then that if the #2 is coming out at all soon
but some of the data from the kal-el chip set is that is runs 1ghz quad core but nothing else is know about this tablet so dont keep your hopes up
kal-el will probably arrive as late as Q1 2012
Indeed, I ordered my TF on friday and happy with my decision. If you start waiting the next device, you will NEVER buy one, cause after TF2 is announced (my guess is Q1/2012, plus the wait to buy the damn device), someone will announce newer model, that has something better than TF2 and will come out in next few months. Then you start waiting that too?
Also there is NO official information about the release of TF2!
Just buy TF now!
Kal-el is quad core, but even now only few programs take advance in dual core, and still plenty of power to run anything. Dunno if there is any other new technology in that chip (and bugs)...
Imo the only differences could and would be video performance.But.. what about that additional battery drain?
But then again, what's coming new in icecream sandwich we don't know 100% so maybe a full new layout that could even utlizie desktop apps. Here's something of interest http://www.gottabemobile.com/2011/08/02/asus-confirms-eee-pad-transformer-2/ quite small though.
Imo transformer 2 next year, because think about it if they release it now at the same price as transformer 1 many people would be quite mad epically now as it's only just has come to Australia.
I would say "outdated" only when a new has actually hits the market. Not even when officially announced. But even then you would have to compare the price tags. Nothing prohibits Asus to sell a cheaper less powerful model and in parallel a "newer" more powerful one with a higher price.
As bytetemplar wrote there will always be a newer model in a few months time.
So grab yourself some deal (or not, the price is still very competitive with respect to other brands) and start enjoying the TF101 today.
Edit: For the same street price you can now have the HP TouchPad if you wanna go with webOS
The Slider and the Memo were anounced for a very long time now and they are not released yet, so i think that 1 month is to optimistic.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium App
A quote from that article..."Of course, coming months is completely ambiguous"
Just saying.........
Honestly, how long do you think it took them to make the transformer? Consider that Viewsonic had the GTab out a good what? 7 or 8 months before the Asus Transformer hit the market. And a good 4 months before the Xoom hit the market. All things considered, I'd be surprised if we see a Transformer 2 based on a Tegra 3 (Kal-el) before years end. I'd be surprised if we see it before Q2 of 2012. Not only does it take time to integrate everything, you still have to build up the software. They won't be able to just throw HC3.2 (or ICS) on it right away.
I'd be willing to bet, the only way we'd see a TF2 before 2012 is if they used another SOC (ie MSM8xxx or a OMAP4) and already have it in hand and have finished the hardware RIGHT NOW. Otherwise, you're looking into 2012 for a new product.
Like someone else said, if you want a tablet and are considering the Transformer, then buy it. If you want to wait for the next best thing, you'll always be waiting for the next best thing. First you'll wait for Tegra 3, then you'll wait for Tegra 4...etc...Just buy it and use it and be happy. The only time I'll start considering upgrading, is when the TF no longer gets updates (be it from Asus or from the community).
the only transformer that will be coming out very soon is the 3G version, kal-el dev boards aren't easily accessible yet, let alone a consumer device
Asus Benelux says on facebook end of 2011 but probably it will hit us in Q1 2012.
Nice discussion. Im also waiting for Transformer 2, but you are right, just buy it now or wait forever.
Also, do we know when will the 3G version hit the stores??
the big problem with this is waiting after it will be available to buy
u will have to wait more to get good kernel root bootloader hack
and what about new os of android ICS u will wait more to become stable
thats lots of waiting oh and dont forget apps for it and more and more....
right now u have nice thing with all u might need and ready to use
so why wait
tf1 is enuf for most of uses grab one and let other wait
And the delay game begins....
http://www.bgr.com/2011/08/18/asus-quad-core-eee-pad-transformer-2-reportedly-delayed/
Don't worry, with the 3g version only just being released. Expect the transformer 2 to hit the stores around early q2 2012 otherwise Asus won't have enough time to soak up all the sales juice Plus all the angry rage from the tf101 users

hi guys,
I would like a word of advise here,
I'm looking forward to buy a tablet but after a little research I came to these 3 which I think are the best out there, please correct me if I'm wrong...
-Galaxy Tab 10.1" (wifi and 3G/4g)
-Lenovo Thinkpad (not the ideapad, wifi and 3G)
-Asus T-Prime
They are kinda close on specs, except the Prime that has bigger processor and some other stuff, I want a get the 64GB version
So I want to ask you, which one you consider the best for a heavy user?
Thank you!
Asus Prime
it makes me want one and i have a touchpad already
I'm waiting for the ASUS Padfone Transformer
Galaxy Tab was voted so often as best tablet and there is coming a refreshed version of it so is definitly a good decission.

I've seen them but they are way to expensive and have a lot of models, and the cheaper model, can't compete with the Asus Prime I do believe.
As for Acer company, I'm not quite convinced about them, I had their Acer AspireOne and it was crap. Among some other bad experiences from my friends that had something Acer.

Like everybody else, I want the best device that I can afford, so for the price range Samsung, Asus and Lenovo have great options.... not mentioning the one from that fruit brand.
I have seen reviews on Amazon and eBay for Samsung and Lenovo and they both are rated high 4 to 4.7, just like that [email protected] (don't know why )

well, of those 3, the transformer prime is the most powerful, lightest, thinnest, best specs, best screen, ect.
the galaxy 10.1 is the best if you need 3g/4g.
lenovo thinkpad tablet is best if you need a USB port.
i'd like to choose the ASUS transformer prime, the hardware is so powerful
hi guys,
I've seen some reviews and bugs/fixes that the TF201 has, but still i think none of the issues but the wifi are real deal breakers, as for GPS I own a garmin and also a SGS2 and a G2X and I carry all of them when I travel, so I'll barely use gps function on it.
anyway I'll go and buy it tomorrow, gonna try it for a few days, if works fine I'll keep it or return it, then sell it (or keep it) for when the TF700T arrives in this June (if Asus doesn't do it again)
Thank you everybody for all the replies they were very helpful.
Forgot to mention: the Prime is cheaper than the Galaxy tab by $50

yeah, that will be the TF700T, lots of improvements I expect, along with the permanent fix to all the TF201 known issues
but as for now I need a tablet, can't wait until June (tentatively release date) =/
I did have the same problem as yours, I wanted a 10.1" size series too.
Finally I have chosen 7.7. For these reasons:
- Build quality
- Samsung commitment on firmware update (and their $$ to backup their products)
- SAMOLED Screen
- The bigger tablet seems getting hot over usage, made worse for their sizes. Moreover, their are too big that somehow I prefer to get back to my Macbook air if I need the size..
nvidia is going to release the $199 tablet called "Kai"
google is going to release the Nexus tablet
amazon is going to release the "kindle ice" or a bigger kindle fire
apple is going to release the iPad mini
also rumors about iOS 6 and Android 5 will be released
and everything is gonna happen in this year
while the tf300 is really a good tablet, but should i wait for these things above?
regardless of tablets coming out this year especially a few of the ones you listed (nexus $199 tab, new kindle fire, ipad mini) none of them are gonna have as good of specs as this (probably). And so this wil FOR SURE run Android 5.0, and if you overclock it itll hold up against some of the later year competitiors. I wouldnt hesitate unless you really wanna get the TF700 when it comes out.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T
I'm pretty sure the Kai tablet is just a reference design, possibly even the base for the Nexus tablet; it's almost certainly not being released for consumers. I haven't heard anything about a new Kindle tablet, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happened. They have to release a new one eventually.
Really, it doesn't even matter if you wait for the next crop of tablets. By the time they come out, there will be new rumours about better tablets. Where will you draw the line? How patient are you?
I personally don't care about any of those other tablets. I got a nice piece of hardware at a nice price. Can't ask for much more when buying computer hardware. There's always going to be something greater and better on the horizon.
The thing I am curious about is Windows 8. That could be a game changer for tablets. Will be much more significant than any piece of hardware. Or it will be a disaster. Never can tell with MS.

This. I don't think you'll find a much better value than this tablet. The nexus tab is going to be 7" and Ipad... no Ipad discussion here (just kiddin)

Well, in the past day or so; we got all but confirmation (from a benchmark from the 'nexus tablet') that the next ieteration of android will be "JellyBean 4.1"
and it will most likely debut this summer at Google I/0.
Theres no way that an OS that is set to debut this summer would NOT run on a tablet that is not even 2 months old. Our tablet has the some of the best specs on the market right now!
