I had a Nexus S on launch from CPW in the UK. Long story short, it was a new device and there were niggles I experienced that made me think it's not worth the price so it was returned.
I am now thinking of getting it again seeing as so many of you guys are happy with yours and I'm optomistic that the changes to the s/w and the increase in developer support will do more now to justify the sim free price.
I have just noticed after looking at some adverts that there seem to be two versions out now of the Nexus S - the i9020 and the i9023. I can only assume that the one I had was the i9020 and I am just wondering which I will get if I make an order for a Nexus S now. I mean, has the i9023 superseded the i9020 or are they both in production with different screen types? Is it therefore a lottery as to which I will get?
Any definitive thoughts on which I should hope for? I've read the comparison thread but there doesn't seem to be any answer.
Thanks.
edit: someone mentioned in this thread that buying in Singapore you will get the i9023. Is the model split by country or could there be a mix out there? Any way of knowing which will be sold in the UK?
To the best of my knowledge.
Both models are still in production currently. US and UK will be getting the i9023 model and the rest of other countries such as Singapore which you mentioned will be getting the i9023.
I'm not sure if they changed the models in US and UK to the i9023 already.
Isn't one the amoled screen and one the super clear LCD screen...I don't think the US is getting the LCD version at all so that model would be the one to get

Confused, is the a typo as you seem to be saying that the US and the UK have the i9023 and other regions also have the i9023?

Yes, the i9020 is the SAMOLED and the i9023 is the SLCD as I understand it. Why would the fact that the US is not getting the SLCD version mean that this is the one to get? Confusd again.

Sorry for the typo. I meant that US and UK will be getting the i9020.
Nexus S was launched using SAMOLED screen at first. Due to Samsung having shortages of SAMOLED screen, they decided to replace the screen with a SLCD to bump up productions for the phone so that the rest of the whole could have Nexus S. Otherwise it would take a long time before Nexus S appear to the rest of the world.

Essentially then we are saying that early Nexus S models would have been launched with the SAMOLED (i9020) and later models have been equipped with the SLCD (i9023). Have I understood that right?
So basically if I buy a Nexus S now the likelyhood of it being SAMOLED is slim here in the UK - or anywhere for that matter?
Same situation as the Desire then really. Have I understood this right?

Yup, you've got the gist of it
Super AMOLED is better than Super LCD so don't let the idea that the higher model number is better

You forgot to mention LTE support on both phones
I guess we know what the Nexus Prime is going to be touting when it gets released
Surprisingly, HD version is slightly narrower than the regular version

Was hoping for a better SoC and it seems that Samsung is still stuck using pentile sub matrixes at that resolution so sharpness-wise it won't be much better than the SGS II.
Guess we'll see another iteration of this phone, aka Nexus Prime, come October 4th.

While that is true, I have serious doubts concerning anything pentile after having used the Samsung Galaxy S.
Hmm could this new beast be carrying one of TI's newer 4470s with an SGX544?

seems like a new highspeed technology not widely supported anywhere else but Korea, and it's just Revision A, so it's not even final
seems like a proprietary LTE by LG, that is not the regular LTE used elsewhere

I'm not certain on this (and who can be with the limited info they are releasing re: carriers and versions), but isn't the 32gb version only LTE with Verizon, and the pentaband version only 16gb? It would be great if we could have choice with either but that's not what I've read so far. The LTE version may be available with more than just Verizon, but I'm in Canada and need the pentaband version and have been told that will only come with 16gb.
Everyone is hating on the nexus cause the Sgx540 is the same gpu as original galaxy S smartphones. This may be true but its clocked almost twice as high Witch is quite good.

Is anodized a cheaper process? If so I would think the Grey version may be cheaper than the black version outright. Or maybe that is why Tmobile USA is getting the grey version.

That's possible. Both finishes are extremely high quality but the micro arc oxidation process is more rare in smartphones.

@Hgaara - I asked a similar question in another XDA thread & so far, it doesn't appear TMobile US is getting the black MAO model. I posed my original question as I did because I found several sources which say only the gray anodized model is coming to TMo, although the information gathered so far is anecdotal. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Have spoken to people in NZ about getting this over the standard S2, Nexus and the Note. However the HD just seems to combine all of the above into one great package. Good camera, great screen, size and 1.5ghz Dual Core what's not to love?
My reason for asking is, will I be disadvantaged through lack of support being in New Zealand?
As I doubt we will see an OTA update to 4.0 EVER, is the phone easy enough to root and upgrade to ICS without worry about OTA?
Anything further you can supply to eleviate my fears is greatly appreciated and again sorry for rehasing this no doubt tiresome question.

Even in little ole NZ?
Now, tell me, is that phone I linked to in my OP the same dam phone? lol
The Samsung E120 isnt the same phone as the Skyrocket as the E120 was only released in South Korea/International. I'm guessing the US version for ATT would be Skyrocket HD which will have similar stats as the Skyrocket with the 720p resolution. Not sure if that will release since Galaxy 3 is pretty much coming. As for being in NZ I doubt that would be a disadvantage, of course to utilize the 4G LTE you need to be in that area.
As for OTA updates, if they do have any then you can download them via WiFi, heck I'm paying $20/month for data plan for only 300mb on my phone of course I'll get the update via WiFi lol as those updates aren't that small .
As for Samsung Galaxy SII phones in general, yes they are easy to root and update to ICS, of course that also comes with the great support developers have in making it easier for us. So I'm not entirely sure the support for that specific phone if there is a community behind it but if they did an OTA update it should be fairly easy to get.

Just remember - Vodafone in New Zealand (and I assume Telecom is doing it now too) is using 900 MHz for 3G to expand their network. This is happening in some rural areas where there is little to no 2G coverage. What this means, is since these phones ONLY support 900 MHz for 2G, you get no service in these outlying areas where there is only 900 MHz 3G coverage... I found this out the hard way recently with my HTC Nexus one...
I was a little hesitant at first but when I was able to get the phone for 0$, I jumped in. Big incentive. The 4.5" screen is great. A 5.3" NOTE screen would be nice as well but not available for 0$, maybe next year.
After using the phone for a couple of months I am pleased with the hardware. One quibble worthy of note that has never been mentioned is the lack of video stabilization when recording in HD. I had to purchase a tripod/mono-pod setup that would allow me to shoot some stable video. Don't let this be a deal breaker. Remember, this is just a friggin' phone! Any serious video should be shot using a dedicated camcorder. Overall, a good device.

EDIT: or do you mean the Snapdragon S4?

Well i noticed on another thread that the S4 was in short supply, So thats the reason for the overclocked S3 chip in the indian version of the One S.
Maybe the OP is thinking about this ?
Who cares ? I got mine and mines an S4 chip lol

Well the Taiwan model is being launched with 1.7 GHz but it's Snapdragon S3 as opposed to 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4.
The UK site now says 1.5 - 1.7 GHz which makes me think they are going to start releasing old gen Snapdragon S3 internationally now.

Yes, I am only concerned because I don't want to swap my phone after it's chipped and get a Snapdragon S3 in return and still have no guarantee of non chipping. Might as well stick with the chipping S4.
Apparently HTC support says the S3 version will be released globally.
Hooray for the new One S: Handicapped Sibling Edition.

haha !!
But on a serious note, this is ridiculous !! Just make some more, problem solved !
Or at least do a discount, cause its not as described
She also told me that she knows nothing about the so called redesigned version with beveled USB port, and it is likely to be a rumour/fake. Which is quite possible since those pics are nowhere except on one random forum.

It's not under HTC's control, Qualcomm (well, technically TSMC) makes the chips.
That said, if these S3-powered phones get sold in places where the S4 version is already available it will be a huge mess and a really dumb move on HTC's part.
Old SoC is the new Crap Screen!
HTC is known to change the screens in their phones for stock problem (ie:the swap to SLCD from AMOLED in Nexus One) or cost reductions (ie: SLCD manufacture change for the MyTouch 4G) and it look like they apply this habit to the SoC now.

According to the support again, I asked if there is any way to identify the difference, and supposedly the retail packaging will have a different model number on it to distinguish S3/S4.
Still, really stupid.
Considering that S4 is faster than their flagship quad core and even GS3, this might be happening for 2 reasons:
1. HTC wants to increase One X sale, and they do not want some other model to steal the thunder.
2. Samsung purchased all S4s for themselves, or bribed the company making them. Something similar happened in the past - they used the fact they owned the company making amoleds in Desire vs Galaxy battle. So stopped shipping them and turned the tables in favor of their Galaxy S. That's how I got my SGS, they had no Desires in stock.

But surely it shouldnt matter to HTC which devices sells more ? Its still revenue, They are hardly competing against themselves lol
But you could be on to something with the samsung thing, Ive seen things get nasty between these giant phone companies.
Apple sue Samsung, Samsung sue Apple, Everybody Sues Everybody...
Well this sucks I was planing on getting this phone when it becomes available in my country and was excited for that but now after reading this I'm disappointed and probably go with something else unless s4 become available here. This is bad news from htc and will probably lose a lot of users with this move specially now when sgs3 is coming out.

Where I live One X is at least €100 more expensive than S, and they have much more of Xs in stock.

It may lose users, but may not be a lot, think most of end users do not even know what is chip, CPU, gpu, etc, it makes no difference to them either s4 or s3 since they have no idea it was s4 then now s3. And, even if they know, HTC oc s3 to 1.7G, they will think 1.7 is awesome which, maybe is.
Not to say this is a right thing, HTC shouldn't do this change cos s4 was one of the selling point of one s, just like quad core on one x. However, it's all down to business which is to maximize revenue, so a understandable move but shame.
