I have been wondering thru the internet and have found many ideas of using a mobile phone with Android on it as a webcam.
placeware has been working on developing one but i can not seem to get in contact with these guys or find there app.
This would be a really cool idea and has already been implemented on the nokia s60 s40 etc. But not for the Android.
I think the best approach however would be finding out how qik use the the cell network to send video to their site.
Just do to this representation of a live video feed means that this would be very possible.
Some other ideas would be to use Bluetooth, Wifi or USB to connect the phone for webcam use.
This is qik the video streaming peeps
cant post the link
This is the webcam idea some other group had but has recently appeared to die...
cant post the link
...
That is a cool app for sure but the intention here is to not have to buy a web cam when i have a perfectly good 5mp camera on my phone.
As well as a wireless one to boot would be really cool.
Not to mention using the phone as a mic as well.
For instance; To use with skype to show somebody certain objects or large objects that you would not normally be able to show easily with a wired webcam.
I think it would just be really cool to have a phone with a cam facing you to use apps like skype on android....
Somebody really needs to do something like this it would be really really awesome and convenient to use.
However, The basic idea being feeding video to a computer to use for whatever you would want.
+1 on this.
I've been waiting for something for ages for this on my Nexi. I mean it may need root access but IDC, because it's better than most webcams probably.
This is a really good idea, I'm surprised an app hasn't been made for this yet. Hopefully it's just a matter of time.
This would be cool, hoe someone picks up on this
Hi Everyone ,
Few days before i started to use an ANDROID phone "HTC DESIRE Z" for the first time. Its pretty cool actually. I really like everything. Bought it from Singapore for $699. There were few misses but its really cool. but i really miss the Front Facing Camera which was in my Nokia N97mini. It helps me to make video chats through 3G by using apps like fring. HTC too should have add a FFCam. I really miss it.
What i want to know is, can’t you connect a web cam through USB and use it as the front facing camera. i have seen microUSB to USB codes too. so as i think you should be able to connect it. But there should be necessary drivers to make a connection. So please let me know if there is a possibility to do this job, so i don’t need to worry anymore thinking about my early phone.
Thanks a lot. I’m posting for the first time. Hope I’m doing it correctly.
Tc,
Romen..
Guys,
Every video conference software I find like Fring uses the back camera. If you select camera on the Thunderbolt, back camera is "Main", and front camera is "Secondary". What sucks you can't see yourself while in a video conference.
Since we have the kernel source, is there anyway to trick the Thunderbolt into thinking the front cam is "main", and the back cam is "secondary"?
It would be a killer mod if someone could figure it out.
Thanks.
Fring has a beta out that works with BOTH cameras (front being the default).
I'd rather see the app makers pushed to get their apps squared away instead of tricking the phone - I use my camera a lot for stills of my kids, etc...

COOL!
You need 3 nerd friends to get access to Fring beta. So I posted the information in General Thunderbolt forum. It explains how to get the beta software. HINT HINT I need 3 testers to form a group.

Actually Networkpimp, I don't get what your saying. I was using Fring as an example. This is a development forum. Should we just shut down and wait for Gingerbread from HTC?
Anyone just hoping someone has an interest in it. I like Droidcam and can't use it either.
I use Yahoo Messenger and that works just fine!
Try the Tango app. works great for me and you can switch from the front cam to the rear cam.
Hi all,
When I place a video call to my friend using the front facing camera, my friend sees my video as sideways and mirrored. I see my local preview as sideways and NOT mirrored. This problem exists no matter how I rotate the phone.
I should see my local preview as mirrored (like desktop version) and my friend should see it as NOT mirrored. Both of us, of course, should not see the video as sideways.
I'm surprised that nobody is talking about this issue. I don't know when the bug crept in, because I don't use Skype on the phone that often due to what seems like higher battery drain when Skype is running. I did some reading online about the issue, and it looks like the HTC EVO 4G suffers from the same problem, which means a LOT of people can't properly Skype again!
I did try messing with the enable/disable rotation setting in both the Skype app as well as in Android settings. I also tried rolling back to a previous build that worked properly, but as some have mentioned, rolling back to a known good build (that supported front cam) doesn't fix the problem.
I don't really think there is an easy fix for this, but I thought maybe if we discuss it here a bit, well..... ya never know.

You need to roll back to a old version of Skype. The new one is crap.

Does anybody know what is the latest version of Skype that doesn't exhibit this problem?

Here you go. I posted it in virtuous affinity. It only broadcasts in landscape.

I had a similar issue with google+ video chat. My video used to come sideways to others. This was happening in GB.
I found that version 2.1.0.46 allows use of the front facing camera and seems to orient the image properly, however there is a special Version 11 build out there that I found, and I don't know who to give credit for it, that adds an extra settings menu called Advanced Settings, which gives ALL SORTS OF AWESOME CONTROL over image orientation and resolution, among many other things.
The filename I found is Skype_2.1.0.46_v11.apk, and I found it at one of those websites that is 4 sharing files (hint). Again, I don't know who to give credit to for this build, but the advanced menu is SUPERB, and I hope to see more builds like this one!!!

No Doubt!! Settings don't get much more advanced than that!!
New version of skype came out today, and it's worse than before.
Landscape mode only now (no setting for auto-rotation). New bugs with front-facing cam: both local and remote view is mirrored, local preview is upright but stretched, remote view is sideways.
Skype makes a couple minor improvements while breaking the most important functions. Sheesh! Do they test this stuff before release?
Yeah, I dont think they test any of their crap. I dont understand why we are not on the supported list. We were on of the first ffc phones out.

Dear All,
TANGO
I am so happy that Tango VideoChat is working!! I suppose all ROMS taking the front vs back camera into consideration
GTALK
I am upset though and please forgive me for insisting for GTALK, I really hope this is not an ARM processor instruction set issue on our device, but if yes, still I dont understand why its really impossible to make the correct patches to make it work, and why Tango is able to utilize...
On other phones it works, like cheap Xperia's and our ChaCha not..it seems unfortunately

[APP][ROOT] Google Talk 1.3 with Video calling, Now wifi optional - is the title.
Under this thread there are various ways to install the video version enabled of GTalk. Personally I succeeded with the installation with @MOdaco install apk way and I can log in, chat with no problem. It also displays the camera icon correctly.
Only when I try to make a Video call from my side it hangs, and if other party tries to call me it refers to a network problem
USTREAM, BAMBUSER
(I prefer Bambuser due to the settings more versatility and I think better quality)
can be a Workaround to make your family at home see what you are doing instead of videochat and while streaming in the background you can initiate a call with VIBER for instance
If any other less battery sucking or nicer ways come out nonetheless GTALK updates make possible to work I will post it while being curious what others use... especially for phone to pc (mac)

Fine! I think it should work with Yahoo Messenger too, but wasn't able to try it yet because no one uses it.

Like I wrote in another posting 10 minutes ago, it is not possible getting this to work. I don't understand too why Google is doing this and I also don't even understand why voice talk won't work without video talk (on the PC it does, on Android phones not).
Only when I try to make a Video call from my side it hangs, and if other party tries to call me it refers to a network problem

Similar here - so nothing with Google Talk yet.
There was some App that promises video for Google Talk on phones where it usually won't work. But don't try this, it doesn't work on the Chacha either.
Gtalk-Vtok
There is an app called Vtok on the market which works (with some minor issues eg you cant log out), but its a real battery drainer, so I installed it for case in need, but freezing it for normally...
