Voodoo kernel: how do I install it? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I want to improve the sound quality of my Nexus S. It seems that I should follow either the James Bond Kernal: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=949292, or the Honity one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=973125. I'm a newbie here and can someone tell me how to "update a kernel"?
FYI, I just tried rooted my Nexus S but somehow it stuck at the google screen after clockwork reboot. So I ended up recovering to 2.3.2: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884194. At least it's not a brick now. Much appreciated if anyone can point to me what I did wrong (I was following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9866675 with recovery-clockwork-3.0.0.5-crespo.img but I could never enter android).
Anyway, so I was on 2.3.2 and then I tried two ways:
1. I adb pushed the og-ns-STK-ext4-VS-VC-BLN-1.4.6.1.zip file and tried install from sdcard at recovery mode. It didn't work and stuck at the Google screen (there's an unlock lock below "google").
2. I entered the fastboot page and used fastboot flash boot path_to_jamesbond\boot.img (yes I'm using windows 7 32bit). I got the same result: stuck at google page.
Please help!
Many thanks!

When you went back to 2.3.2 and flashed the kernel, you flashed an incompatible kernel. You downloaded a kernel for 2.3.3 instead of 2.3.2 so therefore it didn't boot. You're sort of on the right track, just download the proper kernel. He has a 2.3.2 kernel available. Flash that.

Thanks. I found a ROM with voodoo so I flashed that one (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=979851). So far it's good and I will just settle with it.

Sorry to beat a dead horse, bout to go insane

Ok, so i have had a samsung captivate since last summer. I just did the official froyo update the other day and it was successful with kies mini. I then decided to root it using super1click which also worked successfully. I have superuser, titanium backup with busybox installed, and super manager and terminal emulator. I also successfully got clockworkmod flashed and working.
My problem is that ive got the new cognition rom on my internal sd card, but when i try to flash it with cwm, i get the 3e recovery failure message. Ive been reading various sites today on how to fix this problem, but every site seems to tell me something different. I ask this question here, because it seems to be the most knowledgeable site to go to.
How do i get my rooted captivate, with all the above installed and running, to allow me to flash a new rom and possible a new kernal down the road? Im about to go insane trying to decipher through all the info all the different sites have said. Sorry to write such a novel on a tired subject, but im going crazy. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

If you would have done a search here then you would have found that you need to do one of 2 things.
1. Flash back to 2.1
2. Replace the 3e recovery with one that doesnt check for the sig.
I dont know how to replace the 3e recovery. I think ill go with flashing back to 2.1. Once i dl Odin and flash back to 2.1, then i can flash a new rom or a new kernel? Will it undo everything i've done so far? Thanks for the help.

Here is a link to the replacement recovery.
Make sure you have the right odin and that your 3 button works right.
Yesh doing this will wipe out everything. Make sure to back up. Do not back up system data at all as when you restore it, it can lead to major issues. Once done with a custom rom it will be wiped clean. You will have to redo contacts, email, and all other settings
Thanks. Would it be okay to just flash a new kernel like speedmod kernal and just use the stock rom? Is that possible to do while im on rooted 2.2? I like the rom just fine, i just want it faster mainly. Thanks again.

To be honest I am not sure. I only had the stock on for a few hours as it was just not that great compared to the 2.2.1 rom that I have been used to running. I need BT voice dial and the added exchange options so 2.2 was not really for me. If you want a stock feel but faster then I would go with COG or one of the other roms based on the kb1 rom.
So I've come to the conclusion that I should just flash back to 2.1 and go from there. I have odin downloaded, but I'm not certain how to use it. Do you guys think I should flash a custom rom from stock, or just flash a kernel with lag fix and delete the bloatware? Thanks.
first flash 2.1 stock to get rid of the damn 3e. custom roms dont replace that always. also most custom roms dont flash with odin.
get a stock rom. read the instructions, flash

If you are getting .zip signature errors when trying to flash a rom (because you are using 3e recovery) you will not be able to flash a kernel.
Supercurio did make a KB1 kernel that is installable via Odin. If you install that, you will also get CWM recovery. Then you can flash anything you want.
Either way you will need an Odin program. Either Odin One Click to flash back to stock 2.1 or Odin v1.7 to flash the Supercurio KB1 Kernel .tar file.

Correct me if i'm wrong but I think the speedmod kernal is i9000 based which would cause a major headache/bootloop on the stock rom.

The problem is, the OP has no idea what he's doing. It sounds like he's wanting to flash to 2.1, then add a I9000 kernel. Since he's all over the place, it's hard to decipher what he's thinking.
To the OP. I'd HIGHLY suggest you look for the stickied "how to" video's by Connexxion. They will tell you what you need to do and show you EXACTLY how to do it. Invaluable info for the noobs.
Here is the link your looking for, download the installer zip file at the bottom of the first post. Extract to your fancy, use the install.bat file once extracted. Be sure to have the phone connect to the pc (DO NOT MOUNT) and have USB Debugging on.

ok no need to flash 2.1
get neldars kernel flashing app from the market
get a kernel for froyo without 3e recovery in the dev section. this one is great
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=547852&d=1300708475
use neldars app (edit) "sgs kernel flasher" or something to that effect. to flash this kernel
then flash cognition
you can also use odin3 but not the oneclick downloader without the .pit file and flash the same kernel placed in the pda slot.
when you installed keis mini, it installed new WRONG drivers (for odin)
reinstall the original other drivers.
BUT. in your OP all you wanted was to be able to flash COG or something.
ALL you have to do is fix your 3e recovery, SEVERAL people including myself have told you how to fix it. then CWM will work! you dont need a computer to fix 3e if you have root explorer (google it $) .
if you are going to flash a custom rom anyway dont bother going back to 2.1.
if you are going to stay stock, 2.2 is better anyway. (aside from 3e but staying stock dont matter)
you can also use odin3 but not the oneclick downloader without the .pit file and the same kernel placed in the pda slot.

well that doesn't make my whole post irrelivent. if he is rooted and has busy box he can use neldars kernel flasher. sorry if i over looked something.
Ok, well i got the aio toolbox, and i flashed back to stock. Now im running 2.1-update1. How do i go about rooting now? I cant seem to find a root file. Thanks.

Anyone know how to downgrade CWM recovery?

So I upgraded to clockworkmod recovery version 3.0.0.5 to try out the beta version of Cyanogenmod 7.
Anyway, it's waaay too buggy for me at the moment (random battery drainage and restarts) and I'd like to go to a different custom rom.
The problem I'm having is that clockworkmod versions > 3 apparently will only install ROMs that were compiled with Edify scripting... which appears to be just about none of the ROMs I'm interested in at the moment.
So I've tried downgrading through the ROM manager and through running flash_image on the phone's terminal several times - always landing me back in the orange coloured CWM v3.0.0.5.
So my question is; how would I get back to the older green coloured version of the recovery?
I've searched a couple of hours on the internet now, but have found almost nothing relating to the Samsung Galaxy Captivate.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Just flash back to stock. Reroot if u need to then use rom manager to flash it

Coming from CM7 you will have to return to stock before you can flash any other roms anyway. Its in the CM7 FAQ.

Ok I see that you have only 2 posts so I am going to spell this out nicely.
1: Flash back to stock always when changing roms
2: Root the phone then load rom manager and install clockwork mod
3: That puts an update.zip on your internal sd card. Copy that to your computer in a safe directory. I put mine where I store my roms
4: Reboot your phone to recovery and install upadate.zip. Reboot to recovery and if CWM doesn't load install update.zip again and it will reboot to CWM the second time.
5: Then when you want to flash a rom flash back to stock then copy that update.zip to the phone copy the rom to the phone then reboot to recovery. If it doesn't reboot to CWM then install update.zip and it will reboot to CWM. Then you can install your rom.
MAKE SURE YOU FLASH BACK TO STOCK BEFORE ATTEMPTING A NEW ROM INSTALL.

[Q] Problem with Clockwork Recovery

Never had this problem on any other phone...
I have my 4G rooted and have adb'ed Clockwork onto it, flashed a new kernal, etc...
the problem i am having is that Clockwork seems to vanish when I try to boot into recovery. If i use ADB and reflash i get it to work, but on the next reboot, I am back to stock android recovery...
Am I doing something wrong that my phone will only run a custom recovery when "tethered"?
My root access is still active...just i have to reflash Clockwork every time i want to flash something or backup.
I am completely confused...
this hasnt happened on any of my nexus s 4g's but it does. there is a way to fix it, im looking for the link now as Ive read it a million times.
if someone doesnt post by the time i find it, ill link it.
Quote: obsanity says:: One other important addition to this, if you wish to run stock ROM rooted, is that you must rename this file after flashing recovery:
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh
Stock ROM flashes the stock recovery back to original during bootup if that script runs and detects that recovery has changed.
Thanks to Netarchy over @ XDA for this important tip.

need help with getting cm7 from kk4

Have a friend with the kk4 rom which is 2.3.5 . He wants cm7 but the instructions are vague, when he loads up rom manager it doesn't show captivate mtd but only shows the regular galaxy s i900 . What should I do from here ?
ROM manager really needs to die a horrible death and be erased from public memory.
Flash a custom kk4 kernel with Odin that has cwm built into it. Then flash cm7 from there.
No need to even root the damn thing let alone (attempt to) use crappy ROM manager that doesn't work on galaxy devices running over Android 2.1

You may need to flash CM7 twice - A lot of times, the first flash just sets up the MTD file scenario, giving you the CWM you need. The second flash should finish installing it.
Yank battery and replace...hold Vol up Vol down and power til you see the boot screen and let go.
The button combos should work.
got it to work now just trying to load the gapps which seems to not be installing and for some reason it won't recognize the gapps arg this is the weirdest thing.
Just to clarify, if I'm on stock KK4 I can just flash a KK4 ROM with CWM and then CM7? I don't need to be on Froyo, as the CM wiki says?

What is the filename of the zip you are trying to install for gapps?
When you say it isn't installing, does it say it completed and nothing happens, or is it failing? If it's failing, does it give you an error?

Forgive me if you already know this, but it only installs apps that can't be downloaded from the market. If you have the market, it worked and you just have to download the rest of them. If you don't have the market, it definitely didn't work and, short of flashing back to stock and trying again, I don't have any other suggestions to troubleshoot it, unfortunately.

Alright guys I'm stuck :( (soft brick? ) please help

I did a lot of reading before I got into hacking my s3. I'm pretty new to the android development of Samsung phones, so the terms Odin and kexec are a little unfamiliar to me. I've owned and rooted and flashed 4 different HTC phones within the past 2 years successfully. But Samsung is a new ball game for me. And to my limited knowledge, I'm stuck and I'm hoping you guys can help me out.
Here's the process of what I did to my phone that got me to where I am.
1. I was able to root my phone and flash the custom recovery using using Adam outler's program successfully
2. I downloaded ez unlock boot loader from the play store and then successfully unlocked my boot loader
3. I tried to make a nandroid but I didn't know how to with the recovery I had. So I installed Rom manager and flashed cwm.
4. I downloaded the custom bean build 8 ROM, fully wiped, and attempted to flash the Rom with the Rom file sitting on the root of my phone's "sdcard"
- The zip seemed to flash correctly but then after I reboot from recovery, the screen would be sent back into recovery for some odd reason.
- I even tried to repeat the flashing process but it still resulted in sending me back to recovery after I hit reboot
5. So I restored my nandroid. Moved the Rom file to the root of extsdcard and then tried to flash it with cwm. It seemed to flash correctly once again but after I hit reboot, the phone shows the black splash screen with "Samsung galaxy s iii" in white letters then the phone shuts off. That's all that happens when I try to turn my phone on now.
Now normally if this were a HTC phone, I'd boot the phone to bootloader then recovery then restore my back up. But it's a Samsung. I know the volume down/home/power button trick but when I do that with my s3, the caution box pops up.. I hit volume up to by pass it then it just shows a big "downloading" sign that stays there forever. (I've literally left the phone sitting at the "downloading" sign for over an hour and nothing happened.)
So now I'm stuck. I no longer have a solution to get out of this situation. (I suppose this is a soft brick? )
Can anyone offer me any advice?

Use EZ-Recovery to flash CWM 6.0.1.0 and just avoid rom manager next time. Does Beans still use kexec? Could be the issue since the cwm in rom manager doesn't support it.

Yep, kexec rom (kernel) using a recovery that doesn't support it.
not sure if this can help but read this post I made, it may help:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1842716
Make sure you have the right CWR version which is 6.0.1 or 6.0.2. Don't mess around with flashing things in rom manager.
To get to your recovery you need to use vol up+home+power.
The vol down puts the phone into Download/ODIN mode. It's like the bootloader/hboot screen of HTC phones.
I always super wipe)cache, data, dalvil, system) before any install, nandroid or fresh rom. And then install downloaded apps with tit backup.
To use Bean's nandroids after bootloader unlock, flash a fresh copy of bean first to install kexec, then flash your nandroid.
If I understand correctly, Bean's Custom Build 9 is out and no longer needs kexec. Therefore I can now use CWM 6.0.1.2 as I did earlier and I should have no problems now that kexec is no longer necessary. Can anyone confirm that?

From what I have read in his original post for his new build, it does require an unlock and is running a custom non-kexec kernel, so it I would draw the same conclusion that you are and it should in theory work with the 6.0.1.2 version of CWM.
