[Q] Android Newb looking to sort his phone out - General Questions and Answers

Hello,
I got recommended this forum by someone from a mountain bike forum I use as apparently you guys are the authority on all things Android!
Firstly I have a Samsung Galaxy Ace running 2.2 which I got from 3, being a network they have ruined the phone with gambling Apps and other crap that it won't let me delete. I've heard that Android in its pure form (and not networked up!) is as smooth as iOS and my phone currently has a tiny bit of lag.
Also, it won't run flash (something I thought 2.2 was meant to be able to) other than on its youtube App?
Anyway, what I want to do is put the normal Android 2.2 on there free from all of 3's crap, but if I do this is there anyway 3 would know and block my handset?
One other question, Google voice search seems to be pretty good at recognising my words. In the youtube tutorial video it shows the guy saying 'send text to blah de blah I'll meet you outside this place in 40 minutes' and the phone does it. When I try it just google searches 'send text to (whoever I want to text) *message*'
Thanks guys, sorry if this is obvious.

unfortunately there isn't a section for the Samsung galaxy Ace.
But someone started a thread for it check it out.
Hope it helps

Looks like at the moment you can only root it since there aren't any custom roms, have faith

What you're looking to do is root your phone and install a custom Rom. I'm not familiar with your phone, so I can't tell you specifics. You would probably get the most info by going to the forum for your device & reading the stickies.
If you do root your phone, you have to be sure to have it unrooted & returned fully to stock before you could take it to the carrier for repairs. I know this is fairly simple for the Evo, but again - I'm not familiar with your phone so you would need to look it up.
If you have any questions or need any clarification, send me a pm. I'd be glad to help.

Hello, You aren't allowed to post you email apparently and it has been removed.
Making this forum the only way for us to help you.
First of all you should ensure wether you have a MileStone (EU) or Droid (US)
You can tell by looking at your phone and checking if it says Verizon.
If it does, I can't help you any further and you should ask for help in the Droid forums. If it doesn't, I'm close to sure we can help you out
So now that you know which phone you have, you've probably done half of the work already. I can't really tell what your problem is, but I guess you have these 2 issues:
1, You have no GPS-Application. You can buy, or get one for the phone. I'm talking about softwares like Navigon and iGo, which aren't free though, but allow you to navigate without internet (for if you don't have an internet contract.)
If you don't want to pay any money and own an internet subscribtion in your contract, you can just use Google Maps to navigate! Update it through the android market and you're good to go!
2, Now for the second issue:
Unfortunately we don't have any chance of getting custom roms! Only the Motorola Droid Does! There is a way through nandroid backups, but seen the fact that you are just new to the whole thing, I'd recommend you to explore the forums and later on install MotoFrenzy, or the official update to Froyo from motorola, which they will, according to them, release by the end of 2010
Hope I helped!
Greetings, Mike

App to flash/root your phone?

Hi,
Does anyone know if there is an app on android market that flashes your phone for you? How about one that roots it? I'm have no idea if this is even possible, but it would sure be great, since there are a lot of non technical people out there who would really like to try all the new fancy roms around.
thanks
Rafa
There are apps like this, it really depends on what kind of phone you're using. What phone do you have?
Learn to be technical, not ask for handouts..
You think the experienced people here came right into coding an app? Get a how to manual or search google.. There's plenty of tutorials around that could help.. Not saying start a root app, but start with a soundboard our something..
We need more explorers on this site, not beggars.. But good luck in all your future endeavors..

its really easy to do it the legit way.
depending on what phone you have just go to unrevoked and read read read read then read some more i did mine all by myself in a couple hours. the first time around now i am able to root someones phone in less then 20 min. not a big deal once you learn the proper way to do things
teach a man to fish he eats his hole life. (or some **** like that)
Sadly here in Brazil things don't come as cheap as they do for other countries and an unlocked Galaxy S costs about 1000us$, so forgive me if I'm more than a bit iffy about starting to experiment with it.
Getting back to the point, I've read about Universal Androot, but it doesn't support the Galaxy S series.
Find z4 root right here on xda. It'll do it all for you in one click. From there you can get titanium backup and then rom manager. Go to the samsung captivate forum and read all the sticky threads in full. Be thorough and careful and make sure you know what you're doing.
That should take care of you.
Many thanks. Greatly appreciated.

[Q] In way over my head regarding a Android stick (Mk809III)

Hi guys
First of all, I am not a programmer.. Not even very tech savyy, so if "ordinary" people isn't allowed to ask around here, I apologize. I would also like to mention that english isn't my primary language, so also please forgive me for my bad english.
My problem is that I am in wayyy over my head. I bought an android (hdmi)stick over Ebay and actually kind of expected it to be plug and play. After a bit of playing around and reading up on it I realize that this is far from the case.
The item is an Azurill MK809III
I have the following problems:
When I am trying to use apps that requires a rooted device, they say it isn't rooted. When trying to use apps that doesn't allow rooted devices, the app says it is. I am quite convinced that it is, but I don't know why various apps (also apps which only purpose is to check for root) says it isn't. I would, solely for that reason like to find another (still mediacenter-friendly) rom.
I also find the movies kind of choppy. According to various posts on the internet, it's because of a problem in the way the stock "kernel" handles things. I've read various recommendations of which alternative kernel that should be used. I don't know if another rom will solve this problem also?
The problem is that it's a JUNGLE out there. I honestly don't know how to flash a rom, and when reading up on it it seems VERY complicated. I know from earlier escapades that tech-things often look more complicated in writing, but what worries me the most is that all the guides that I found includes some kind of code.. Is that Linux? And does that mean that I need to have a computer running Linux to do this?
I am a totally virgin when it comes to tampering with things on this level.. I honestly thought it would be a nice "out of the box" alternative to a Chromecast, but boy was I wrong.
Can anyone save me? Either by guiding me through the whole process or maybe just tell me if this is possible without Linux and pointing me in the right direction(s)? I fell over something called "Rockchip Batch tool", but I don't know if that can be used for the process or only to flash back to the stock rom (or maybe I totally misunderstood what its for)
I am of course kind of afraid of breaking my device, so I don't dare to start following some guide on my own initiative, unless someone assured me that it is the right thing to do.
Thank you in advance.. :fingers-crossed:
Christina
Bump..

[Completed] [Q] Where to look

Okay, so there's a new video floating around Facebook where this girl is entering the pass code on her boyfriend phone, and as she finishes entering it what seems to be a console saying "access denied" and "you didn't say the magic word" and then a video pops up of Kevin Hart in one of his acts saying, "mind your damn mother******* business bi**h" which is obviously occurring on an iPhone 5. I would like to know how I could achieve this or at least something close with a Samsung galaxy s4. I have rooted my s4 and have clockwork recovery, so I am willing to play around, I have a flasher if that required although I doubt will be needed. I just really have no clue where to look or what to search for, could someone direct me to something?

Ha, ha ... nice idea.
Although I don't know if this feature is already available for your device, but best place to ask is the [HELP THREAD] Galaxy S4 | Ask any question | Noob friendly. thread.
Good luck !
Thread closed and thank you.

Which files / tutorial will I need

First off, I got to say I love yu XDA guys...I've never had any issue rooting something with a tutorial from here.
Problem is, I've read so many links on this phone, now I'm confused....and can't seem to get back to what I read. I just left Verizon in favor of Metro and got this phone for FREE during a promotional period about two weeks ago....so I really don't want to do anything stupid and brick it.
It's the 700T1 variant and the build is MMB29K.J700T1UVU2APK6 if that will help. If someone would just point this total noob to the right tutorial for this I'd appreciate it. It doessn't have a gyrosope sensor and I've read there are ways to trick it in to thinking it does, but of course you have to have root - and my kid and I want to play Pokemon Go so that we can actually see the little guys on our street, in our park, etc. Thanks!
Also, does anybody know if the "quick roots" work (Kingo Root, etc). What have / did you have success with?
