[Q] Nexus S vs Galaxy S i9000 issues - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have Galaxy S, but since GPS is one of most important features for me, I want to replace it with Nexus S.
Can you please tell me what are known problems with Nexus S (like filesystem lag and GPS on Galaxy S for example)? Is GPS on Nexus S better than on Galaxy S (what about lag without rooting/flashing)? Does VOIP (Skype, etc.) work as expected (on Atrix that is problem, so reason I avoid it).
And finally what Android phone you recommend which has GPS working perfectly, has screen 4.0+ inch screen (800x480 or more), VOIP working, no other serious issues?
I mean basically there is no phone which has everything working with above specs
Thanks in advance

Samsung just made the phone which may seem to be similar to it but its definitely not a galaxy s phone the lag will depend on the apps you'd install and run, If rooted with voodoo stock kernel you'll get amazing battery life and performance must be very selective with custom roms since not all of them are 100% stable GPS works just perfect if kept stock, some Roms affect its performance, pure Google, less bloat more current updates doesn't need 4g's to compete with new devices its simple and fast.

I agree that GPS works 100%. The only lag I've noticed is the browser when you're on a heavily flash content site. This phone is definitely fast though. I had a Vibrant 3g and I know just what you mean. This phone would be a great replacement.

I'm using a Galaxy S I9000 too and am damn fed up with the lag problem. I also can't get the three button recovery mode to work and so have refrained from flashing kernels ... I'm not really good with hacking stuff. So like borgdrone7, I'm curious whether the Nexus S is a significant enough improvement assuming it is running on the stock android that comes pre-installed.
From what I've read, it sounds like a worthy upgrade.

[Q] Nexus S upgrade over Vibrant? Advice

I am relatively new to the whole android thing but after having acquired my Vibrant, when it first came out, i have grown tired of how slow it is due to samsungs cancerous coding. This makes me even more displeased when i see how fast my brothers Nexus One is compared to my phone. So i am wondering if the Nexus S would be an upgrade to my vibrant or if it still suffers from samsungs cancer.
Thanks in advance
I went from a vibrant to a sns and its somewhat of a lateral move. Yeah sns is pure google, has ffc, flash etc....but I did like my vibrant, gf just wanted it more than me.

Having owned both the nexus one and now the nexus s, the nexus s is just as quick. I believe Samsung's main issue is the filesystem (rfs if I recall correctly) they chose to use. This is not an issue with the nexus s as it uses ext4, an improvement over even the nexus one which was still using yaffs.

I went from a Vibrant to a Nexus S.
Nexus S pros: Gingerbread. Front camera. Near field thing. LED flash.
Vibrant pros: HD video recording. Expandable SD.
Things I have discovered I never use: front camera, near field thing, LED flash.
Things I do use and wish I had: HD video recording, expandable SD.
Is Nexus S worth it just to have Gingerbread? I don't know. Gingerbread's awesome, but if you have an Android phone, you're just going to root it and hack it and apply a new launcher, anyway, so does it really matter what it ships with? Thanks to amazing devs, it seems like it's pretty much all hackable.
If the Galaxy S 4G ran stock gingerbread, it would be a perfect phone.
Don't get me wrong. The Nexus S is nice. I'll keep using it for a while. But I already have my sights on the Incredible S.

Thanks!
I must admit that besides using the Flash as a flashlight and its "cool factor" i really dont care about it nor would i use it.
And then the front camera i have considered just modding onto my existing vibrant.
The near field thing i will never use and with our amazing devs the Vibrant is bound to get Gingerbread sooner rather then latter.
BUT the thing i really care about is its system speed and if it has, as our devs put it, "samsungs cancer code" in it, because after all the shiny new addons the OS speed is really my determining factor.
Who know, maybe just switching off Launcher pro will alleviate my lag.

it does.. the kernels have to be open-sourced to expand development
kernels most likely get open-sourced after the OTA has been released.
and we all know how OTAs go for manufacturers

Hadn't known that. I'm new to Mods and such.
I will note, I rooted my Vibrant and applied the lagfix and etc., and then it was fine. Before that, it sucked.
And I admit, I honestly don't even know what a kernel is. I just put cyanogen mod on my Nexus, and I don't see much difference between it and stock. All of which I mention for perspective on my comments.
The Galaxy S4G might be more worthwhile than the Vibrant. At least the GS4G runs froyo, right?

CyanogenMod is using the stock kernel.. lol, if you want to see the differences of kernels. Try out Netarchy's 1.2.4 or Trinity, I personally use Netarchy. I dislike morfic's boot screens added ontop.
Voodoo sound and Voodoo color are amazing (they're features in kernels) you need the app to control them as well.
Vibrant & Galaxy 4G both run Froyo. Vibrant has official 4G + source released for it now, but it took way too long imo.
If ur gonna try netarchy, make sure its CM7 compatiable (it says it on download link). CFS or BFS, either shouldn't disappoint.

x2. the only thing i truly miss from the vibrant was the extra storage space. i had 14gigs of internal space and i also added another class 4 32 gb external sd card. i know some people don't use a lot of space but i do (movies and music and a ton of nandroid backups).
I just switched 2 days ago and so far I'm really happy. I sold my Vibrant to a friend and was able to get a Nexus for a price that didn't hurt too bad.
I have to admit that I was hesitant at first. I dislike how Samsung has handled the SGS line and was loathe to reward them by purchasing another one of their products. But after playing with the Nexus for a while I caved. Its the phone I wish the Vibrant had been on the first place. No RFS, no TouchWiz......Never going back to a non-stock Android phone again.
Performance wise it feels noticeably faster than the Vibrant. The build quality is better too. My Vibrant used to creak a little, but not this. I have made a few video calls and though I probably wont use it often it is nice to have the option. I love having a camera flash; I'm often out with friends at night. NFC should take off this year but right now I can't really say anything about it.
Mostly I bought it because the other phones ive seen coming out this year don't impress me too much. Dual core is awesome but until the software support is there it isn't going to do much. Guaranteed updates and CM support are great also. The 4 inch SAMOLED screen hits the sweet spot in my book as well.
Just remember, either way you'll have a nice phone. I enjoyed my Vibrant but at the end it just wasn't what I had hoped for. Good luck.

Only thing I miss is video codecs. 720p playback lags on RockPlayer
RockPlayer handles everything else pretty well.
Overall, my opinion is that Nexus S > Vibrant. Wish it had SD though, not a deal breaker for me though.
Was just sick of the lack of CM7 support for SGS and constantly using lagfixes and unapplying them to flahs a new ROM.

P.S. don't call the Nexus S a SNS. Its NS. They didnt call the 'Nexus One' HN1/HNO (HTC Nexus One).
You should wait for the HTC Pyramid. It will be out in first half this year and it is going blow both away.

Pyramid doesn't features Tegra 2. With a phone using tetra 2, you'll have access go tegra 2 zone.
Plus, its rumored that quad core phones will come out at the end of this year or early next.

I agree with the lateral move. I like the hardware on the NS better than the Vibrant as I'm not into hardware modifications. I do prefer touchwiz apps to stock Google apps. I also prefer video codecs and 720p video recording over not having them either.
What I can tell you is that in terms of speed there are only a few things where I've noticed the Nexus is actually faster at, a quadrant benchmark because of jit, and usb connection speed. Side by side the tasks are almost identical, so much so that I can't tell the difference. My Nexus is running CM7 RC build #2 overclocked to 1.2Ghz and my Vibrant is running Bionix-V 1.2.1 with no overclock.
I have the luxury of being able to use either one whenever I want, so if I know I'm going to take a video I'm taking the Vibrant, and if I'm going on a trip and want to watch some movies on a plane ride I'm taking the Vibrant...every day use the Nexus is fine but it isn't an upgrade by any means.
In the end it's your choice so make sure if you do make the choice to change phones that you can live with it at least until someone makes some nice software modifications.

If leaked specs are correct, this phone should be a killer......
ps. as i said this many times before....Team Wiskey Vibrant > SNS > stock Vibrant
Vibrant has much more then just HD playback and HD recording.....3.0 Bluetooth, TV-out, Gorilla Glass, SD-slot, many extra/cool features of Touchwiz (music player, all-share, camera, better sms and email clients), support for car and home docks, etc....i am probably missing something. And with TW ROM you cant even tell it apart from SNS running Gingerbread...

Lots of biased statements there. Coming from a Guy who is from team whiskey.
You can paint something to look like something else but it's still Froyo. Not to mention the vibrant is using RFS filesystem that requires lagfixes.
With the Nexus S, Google releases source for kernels almost immediately which is a huge plus for Nexus S development. Whereas the vibrant kernels are based off I9000 kernels which result in poor battery life.
Waiting for Samsung to release source is mindblogging and I'm sure a lot of people who went from a vibrant to a nexus s would agree with me.
Basing roms off otas < basing roms off AOSP source.

If video playback of anything you can throw at it is important, or large amounts of removable sdcard storage, or even 720p recording, then the Vibrant is the clear choice. There are a significant number of media-related activities the Nexus S can't do, that the Vibrant can.
If a more solid build, with a sexier to look at and easier to hold in the hand shape, with the alleged promise of getting newer versions of Android first are important, then the Nexus S is the choice.
OP - you can easily vastly improve the Vibrant's performance with any of the custom ROMs are kernels that implement the voodoo hacks.
I've called the move from any of the existing Galaxy S variants to the Nexus S a "side-grade", it's definitely not a major "upgrade" unless you'll never run root or custom kernels (to fix the infamous "lag" of Samsung's RFS filesystem).

I am not a dev, but i am pretty positive that Vibrant with TW uses VIBRANT kernel, not i9000.....shouldn't you know this being from Team Wiskey ?
dont have poor battery life......after several cycles with new ROM, I am back to my usual which is 12-14 hours of use. RFS doesn't bother me anymore thanks to Voodoo. And as far as 2.3 vs 2.2 goes......its just a minor upgrade, not as big as 2.1 to 2.2.
at this point SNS is history already......its very clear that the phone was released to make quick cash....not much longer wait for S-II, LG 2X, and Pyramid....
development-wise points go to SNS......

Vibrant source was released days ago and there are already three OC kernels out built from source.
I would say if you want to break it down, the NS is better as a pure phone/smartphone, whereas the SGS is a better media device. I would not sell my Vibrant because it's like an Android-based iPod Touch (but better).

[Q] Why didn't we all chose the Nexus S?

I have recently seen a YouTube video in which ICS was running perfectly on the Nexus S.
Today I saw a story on Engadget.com that ICS is rolling over to Google employees (those all use Nexus S it seems), and the official release is due any day now.
First of all, that's cool!
Second, why didn't we all chose to go with the NEXUS S?
Full support, source code in the open, immediate updates....
WHAT AM I MISSING?
Thanks
1.DUAL CORE a smooth as iOS if u may..
2.8 MP CAMERA with Half and FULL HD recording
4.STOCK android(if only g2x had not been with tegra 2 ICS ports would have been very very early for this device)
5.Awesome Build not as plasticy as NS
6.Tegra GAMES(official nor using plugins),
7.HDMI OUT and etc etc...
NS has only one advantage... quicker updates....nothin more literally.
just my thoughts.
I already had a Vibrant and wanted something faster. Nexus S was basically a Vibrant with better software and LESS storage.

Thanks. Are you suggesting that the Nexus S is SLOWER than the G2x?
Ok, so you right. Because I had a Vibrant as well, and did notice just how fast the G2x is. B-U-T, isn't ICS going to change that?
You don't choose a Nexus S because Samsung devices suck. Problematic hardware and questionable firmware. Nexus S is also a single core device and is basically a slightly updated Galaxy S device. Also, if they do a lower power shutdown the internal sd can get corrupted and if you have not previously unlocked the bootloader there is nothing you can do to fix the device and it is permanently soft bricked (has to be sent to Samsung for warranty replacement). The G2X is a far superior device.

Too right, jboxer..... Although I liked certain things about my Vibrant, there were plenty I didn't. The thing I liked the MOST was the 16gb (12 usable) internal storage + SD Card, and the Nexus S took away the SD Card's additional storage.
And, we are CERTAINLY suggesting the Nexus S is slower than the G2X... single core processor for one... slower Ram if I'm not mistaken as well. Camera quality is worse.
And, ICS may be nice, but it isn't going to turn sow's ears into silk. That is, it won't make a phone any faster than it already is.
Have you looked at what ICS really is? As I in what it legitimately does that gingerbread doesn't?
Aside from looks (which are replicable with themes) its not that much.

ICS will fully implement multi-thread processing, which Gingerbread doesn't do. That alone should speed up multi-core devices quite a bit. In Gingerbread the dual cores are inefficiently used.
I have both and I say both are GREAT.
NS has the very best speaker like other Samsung models, and voice quality is decent (not badly compressed like other Samsung)
AMOLED + Voodoo are prefect combination and I fine tuned the screen to perfection.
G2x with Eagleblood 2.4 is GOOD even there are few minor bugs.
It is VERY FAST (2500 on quadrant)
Good color screen (bleeding is minimal)
5GB+SD (I have not tried FAT64 FS microSDXC yet as it's not commercially available).
720p video recording (Google app)
Good stuff!
The reason I brought this issue up, is because me and a friend had a discussion about his next phone (he is now with Vibrant). I said that since him and I are total geeks when it comes to our devices (test every ROM, change themes, and we actually CARE about that stuff [i guess we are bored as well, even though we're not kids anymore] ), then the NUMBER ONE thing that we need to consider, is DEVELOPMENT!
If a device is a good device, but has no dev, no "action" when it comes to ROMs, tweaks, kernels and so on, than it's just not a fun device to own.
A device that is just "plain good" would be good for our wives (and indeed, how awful it was when I tried to show my wife why CM7 is awesome - wow that went bad , but not good for us geeksters
ICS is built for dual-core devices. ofcause nexus s will run ICS but i doubt it's any faster
if not for LG, devs could have released ICS port for G2x with hw acceleration(see the dev forum)
nexus is definitely slower than g2x. the only thing makes it good is official google support

[Q] WIND Mobile LG G2X

Hey guys, I might be hopping over to the $29 monthly WIND Mobile plan pretty soon, so I'm looking at the handsets they have and I pretty much narrowed it down to the G2X and the Nexus S. I'm currently using a Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 which is really similar to the Nexus S in terms of hardware, so I'm hoping that you folks could shed some light on some of the questions I have about WIND and the G2X
1. How are the custom ROMS for the G2X? I love being able to flash custom ROMS like MIUI and CM7, so I'm wondering if there are custom ROMS out there for the G2X that provides full functionality (ie. smooth video recording, etc)?
2. On my GT-I9000, 512 MB of RAM on 2.3.x Gingerbread seems to hinder the home screen smoothness and performance unless tweaks (scripts, LMK kernels, etc) are applied and even then, it's not always 100% smooth. Does the G2X suffer from the same issue?
3. Some of most impressive specs on paper for the G2X are the camera and the dual core processor, do they live up to the initial hype?
4. If anyone's has/had a Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 (and used the custom ROM or stock ROM with lag fix), how does the G2X compare with the SGS?
5. Are there any phone-specific precautions I should keep in mind when rooting/flashing this phone (eg. bootloader locks, etc)?
I'd appreciate any advice/input from owners of the G2X, thanks!
To answer some of your questions..
1. Eaglesblood, latest cm7 nightlies using faux latest cm ds kernel are BOSS! I am using latest 2.3.7 eaglesblood rom and everything just works perfect! I have tried miui roms and they are great also(thanks whitehawx for all the ports)
2. Compared to the i9000 the g2x smokes it even tho it has the same ammount of ram, let me just say this... i have 600+ apps/games and dont experience any lag whatsoever! No scripts needed!
3. Yes!
5. Just make sure you install lg drivers/ apx drivers first, install CWM thru tgagunmans excellent nvflash guide(never thru rom manager since it's a fake flash) Then just flash a rooted rom thru recovery, or you can also oneclick root. G2x doesnt have a bootloader like htc devices(wish it did tho because it would make flashing radio/baseband soo much easier compared to using lg's crappy software/kdz method).
Also..
Since the nexus s already has ICS it might also be an attractive option but since it seems your wanting input on g2x, once cm9 is publicly released for our phones it will be an even more amazing device since it is the OS our G2x's should have started with from the beginning(hw acceleration, multicore support, improved ui,etc)

The camera software was changed in Gingerbread. There are a few options gone from the Froyo LG Cam. Also added more compression to the pics taken. Not as sharp and clear.
Wait until ICS is available fo the G2X then decide. If it's the G2X, buy a 2nd hand one, they,re a lot cheaper.
I love the phone but to be honest, the camera sucks ever since LG removed the new camera and the modded ones don't work the same. Not a problem for me though, I don't use it.

It wasn't too bad on Wind mobile. But it's a lot more enjoyable once I rooted and upgraded to Gingerbread on EaglesBlood rom.

Android phone without screen lag?

Hi all, I've had about 5 different Android powered phones beginning with the og Droid, to my current DroidX and Motorola Xoom. The screen kind of lags for both devices and it is kind of annoying. I use my wives iPad and iPhone every now and then, but I really prefer Android. There is no screen lag on either of her devices. Is there any new phone available that doesn't have this issue? I'm interested in the galaxy nexus, but the one I tested in the store had the same kind if lag... Although everything was running at one time, so I don't know if it was for that reason or what. I'm on Verizon if that helps. Thanks for any info!

There's no perfect device with zero lag.
The way iOS and Android function is just different, there's a thread detailing how this works, don't have it on hand.
In Android land, the closest you will get to a totally lag free experience is the Galaxy S2. Too bad Verizon doesnt carry it...
.....you're talking a dx here. Terrible software.
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk
I agree that no phone is completely lag free, but custom roms/kernels make a huge difference, which is why we all post/lurk here For me, changing the rom and kernel on my Galaxy Nexus makes it into a totally different phone with significantly less lag. I think if you upgraded to a GN and tricked it out, you'd be much happier than you are with your DX.
The gs2 makes a valiant attempt. If you're stuck with android, that's your best option.
The galaxy s2 has less lag than the iphone 4s. You need to get the one x or SGS3 and I am sure they will not lag.( Ok not 100% true, becuase I can make any thing lag, iphone 4 and 4s, i7 PC with GTX 580 6GB of DRR3 1600mhz ram, PS3, Droid razr, SGS2 and my laptop.)
I have made them all lag by runing bone crushing app or content that made them yell nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. I can tell you how I made the iphones lag, but really they are over rated.
Make a Lumia lag, try it. Android lags worse than any other OS regardless of hardware, you trade that level of user experience for infinite customization. For most, that's a fair trade-off.

Like others said all devices lag but rare you see it in iOS or a windows phone. Its just Android lags the most and it doesn't matter how powerful the hardware gets it's still gonna lag until the OS is completely rewritten.
there cant be no lag, and dont compare android to iphone, iphone os is specificly built for the iphone, only 1 device. but android is just built for hundreds of devices, it would be just extremly time consuming and costly for each company to develop their own android for every phone they release. and thats why android lags.

Also it is purely due to the fact that you can multi task with Android. The iPhone doesnt do true multitasking... The only time my GS2 lags is when I have multiple downloads in progress, streaming movies to my tv/xbox and playing games.

What do you mean by screen lag exactly? Are you talking about touchscreen response time? If so, then there's still a while before we get to near 0ms delay on commercially available phones, although Microsoft have made a touchscreen display with a 1ms delay.

No, I believe they are refering to when you scroll through things sometimes it lags. Like say sometimed you scroll between homescreens, sometimes it wont go smoothy like it is meant too.

Still not possible even today. The lag on newer phones is worse than ancient phones like the S2. Unoptimised OS can't handle the higher resolution.

[Q] Moving from Touchwiz to CM10.1

Hello fellow Note 10.1 Owners,
I recently got a Note 10.1 as a gift and have been really enjoying it. One feature I am really missing from the Nexus 7 though is user switching (which comes with Android 4.2). I owned a Samsung Epic 4g in the past so I know that waiting for Samsung to release this update is futile.
I am considering installing CM10.1 on the tablet, but I was wondering if anyone can comment on the difference in features as compared to Touchwiz. I run CM10.1 on my Galaxy Nexus and my fiancee runs it on her Galaxy S3, but I feel that things are slightly different with the Note 10.1 since it has the s-pen and handwriting recognition.
I was just wondering if anyone has tried CM10.1 on the Note 10.1 and can share their opinion.
Can I survive without user switching? Yes.
Would it be fantastic to have? Of course.
Do I love the look of stock Android over Touchwiz? No question.
Does Samsung's crappy attempt at skeuomorphic graphics frustrate me? To no end; this is not the year 2001.
Thank you!
I came from a nexus 7 and to be honest, I've had a few Samsung things and one thing I hate is the ui, it's like it was made for kids. The stock ui is by far superior.
Anyway the one thing stopping me from switching is the lack of multi window. If you don't need that then switch, I've tried cm10 and it worked great.

I have tried it and its ok but many things made me flash back to stock based.. No mulit-window and IR blast features.. also its not as loud as stock using my noozxide mod.. I listen to LOTs of music and I needed that extra juice on some songs because not all songs are the same volume.. but other than those features i would have stayed on cm10.. i might try it out again someday.. maybe even port those features over if i can...
I can do without multi-window but I do really like the IR functionality (despite the fact that Peel lists 40+ input modes for my Onkyo receiver and I only have 3, so it is quite the guessing game). I think I will just give it a go with CM 10.1 and see if I am really missing anything. I am assuming I can use Titanium to back up PS Touch so that I do not have to purchase it once I install CM 10.1.
CM10.1 is really a nice ROM. UI is great, browsing is much faster and there are no lags even if I open many apps at once. I say give it a try and be amazed!
Thanks for the helpful feedback. I had made a thread in general and somehow missed this one. I am on Cyanogenmod now and contemplating switching to stock-based. Is there really a noticeable lag on stock that doesn't exist in CM10.1? During what activities?
I notice the most lag when switching to recent apps.. its instant on cm10 and its about a 5-10sec delay on stock..
I'm not entirely sure what's causing it, but I really feel like CM 10.1 has much worse battery life than the Stock ROM does even though Stock has like, 500 more garbage apps installed. There's got to be something in the Samsung build that's making the variance between builds so large.
On Stock I can use my tablet at school from 10:45am to 8:40pm with maybe 2.5 - 3 hours of non-use. On its worst day, I got home and before plugging it in the battery was around 30-ish %.
Tuesday of this week I was using the latest CM Nightly and had to start adjusting system settings that I never touch, like screen brightness to as low as I could use it while still seeing the screen, silent, wifi off, gps off, etc. I was under 20% when I left that night, and that was after putting it back in my bag about halfway into my last class.
Really stinks because I much prefer CM over Stock, but if the battery life doesn't improve, I can't justify using something that's somehow actively killing my device faster.
