I have not had Kies Mini be able to update itself past 11011_4 - and I suspect that is why I had to rely on Odin to flash KB1 to my AT&T Captivate. I also assume that there will need to be some form of update pushed to enable use of the Amazon App Store, now that AT&T has said it will happen someday
If that comes via Kies Mini, I'm betting I won't be able to load that the official way either, so.... does anyone have a direct download link to the current version of Kies Mini (i.e., what it would update to, if I could update it).

Off topic but funny:
"It is highly recommended to attempt the JH7 update through Firmware Over The Air (FOTA) process versus Kies Mini due to simplicity. "
Simplicity in what, creating bricks?

Actually that's an interesting test, to see if the older version would update all of the way to the current version...

Hey, good thing for you is that the screen you are describing IS normal download mode. With the 2.3.6 update came an update to the way download mode looks and works. That custom download binary:NO just means that you haven't loaded any custom binaries to the phone (you're on the stock one), and where it says current binary, it lists which version you are on: in this case, official Samsung.
Nothing is wrong, and all is as it should be.
Thanks a million. I was worried for bit. I have an other question that hopefully you can help me out with. I have been trying to use odin and superoneclick since I updated to 2.3.6 and I can't get the phone to work with either odin or superoneclick. It worked fine with both programs before the update. I really wanna root the phone but haven't been able to. Hope you or anyone can help me out.

seems like SOC doesnt work with the official update
and try re installing drivers or using different USB ports on PC before giving up
try each at least 3 times and make sure you are not using a hub or anything
and you have a direct USB connection
Heimdall and Odin get picky sometimes
As jayRokk says, uninstall your Samsung drivers and Kies installation in Control Panel / Programs and Features (or Add Remove Programs). Reinstall Kies to be sure that your drivers are installed correctly (This is for Odin, to get drivers for Heimdall you have to use the zadig program that comes with Heimdall to install a different driver on one specific port.).
Then, you might want to try this Odin package that I put together to make it easy to get stock AT&T Gingerbread with root.:

There was a link to one a while ago but the link is broken now. Can anyone help me get a program for my Mac? My Captivate's version is 2.1 so yeah. Thanks guys!
P.S. If you could help me update it to the latest firmware after 2.1, that would be awesome! I've been trying for so long.
Kies
I believe the most secure way of updating the phone would be through the Samsung Kies software
Kies for Macbook :

I would suggest that you look into downloading one of the Heimdall-based one-click files here, specifically the one in the "I897UCKH3 Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread" section labeled "With Bootloaders - Link 1 / Link 2 [With CWM Injected Kernel from Boog]". That will flash your phone with the Gingerbread stock rom (the most current Android version officially released for the Captivate), with a kernel that will give your phone root capabilities and ClockworkMod Recovery.
Heimdall works on Mac, unlike Odin.
One quick note - if you do flash that file, MAKE SURE TO BACK UP ALL OF YOUR APPS/PICTURES/MUSIC ETC.. I emphasize that because when you flash the stock rom you'll lose all of your apps, and if something bad were to happen during the flash, there is a chance (albeit a small chance) that you could hard brick your phone. This is because that file flashes bootloaders.
Just makes sure you have a good cable and good connection to your phone and you should be fine.
I have SGH i997. Not sure if its S2 or not. I need to update firmware as some of the applications are causing problems. I even don't know if it already has AT&T firmware or android. Incase its anAT&T firmware, can I upgrade to latest android firmware? How?

I know you need some help but a mod should close one of the two posts that you have. Please install the drivers from Kies and try several computers or ports if necessary. The procedures that the folks here told you (and in your other thread) work. Do some research too, that is how you learn.

I did it using Kies for my device from samsung webpage. I installed the wrong version of kies before. Well, problems, after installing new firmware, are still unsolved. Skype won't start and viber won't run perfect as well. Is there any way to download older versions of apps?
I need help. I have tried to download the 4.3 update for US Cellular for sg3 from the Samsung site and from xda site. Everytime it tries to install to my computer, there is always an error extracting. I shut off firewall, Norton, and uninstalled anything Samsung from my computer, but still get error msg. I have talked to someone else with same problem. Must be a glitch with the download itself?
Meanwhile, I tried to get the 4.3 update from Kies. Kies updated to v2.6. Then it says my phone not supported. Makes me do Kies3. Still says my phone not supported. Kies refuses to connect to my phone, even though I never had problems before. Says my s/n is incorrect. Comes down to my IMEI being corrupted, I guess.
I used Triangle Away, then unrooted, but am still not able to get 4.3 update OTA through USCellular. It just constantly says checking for updates. I assume it knows my phone has been modified.
Can anyone help me figure out how to get the 4.3 update? I am only a little tech savvy. I originally rooted with One Click Root, but would be willing to root with something else if necessary. Thanks to anyone in advance for some help.

I have the the same phone down to the baseband and build number. I've downloaded the 4.3 executable, but when I run it on my Windows 7 Home Premium PC, the file extraction always fails. Not sure why, and I can't find anything online about the problem.
I'm wondering if it is even worth the time to try and update the phone? Because something that should be straight forward, is completely bass ackwards.
Any help from the community?
Thanks!

There was a new update on the Samsung site dated Dec 3. Comes as a zip file. I tried on 2 different computers. Still got error message while installing to computer. Once again I emailed Samsung support. All they came back with was instructions on how to flash it to my phone. Very frustrating. Every email I have sent them, I tell them the simple update tool won't even install on my computer. It has nothing to do with not updating my phone itself. I sent them a new email this morning, stressing to stop giving me instructions on how to update my phone, but that their download still has problems just installing to our computers.
I have decided that I probably won't be able to get the 4.3 update since Samsung and US Cellular can't give us a good download. I also can't use Kies or OTA. Oh well. I'm sure I will rethink having a Samsung phone ever again. Think I'll go back to Motorola, or maybe even try an HTC for once. Looks like their 4.3 updates have been good.

I had been an iphone user for 10 years and I used to often update via ipsw files for complete updates and not OTA updates. It used to resolve many issues sometimes introduced with OTA updates.
What is the equivalent for android and Samsung N20U? Also, where do you download these files from?
Thank you.
On Samsung devices there is a flash tool called Odin with which you could flash full official firmwares. Those you can either download from Sammobile (which I don't recommend unless you have a premium account as the download speeds sucks big time for free accounts) OR you could use a download alternative program that takes the files from proved, safe storage locations. I personally use SamFirm and/or Frija (this one proved to be a bit better than SamFirm lately).
After you get the download tool, query the database for your model/type and get the results, then you have option to download it. After that, flash it via Odin.
These are just general guidance rules, you'll find specific usage manuals/steps for each of the above by an easy search on Google

Thank you so much for the explanation. I really appreciate it. Is there a belief amongst community that full updates re better than ota in android too. It definitely was the case with iOS.

I'm not familiar with what is considered "full updates" in comparison to OTA.
But if you are using a device with a Snapdragon processor there is really only the option for updates that are "Officially" released, the bootloaders are locked and don't give the opportunity for a modified firmware. If you happen to be using a device that will allow for a modified firmware (I'm not up to speed on the current availability of them) they may become available soon if not already.
While the modified firmware can be very good, I don't think I could honestly say that only one might be better than the OTA.
He was referring to a "full firmware" that contains the entire Android OS and all the apps as they originally come on the phone. Opposed to an "OTA update" which is a smaller file that contains just the changes and are flashed on top of an existing firmware.
Each OTA has a corresponding full firmware release and someone could flash that one instead of just updating via OTA, resulting in an updated phone having an official firmware on it. This does not void warranty or break things (ofc if done properly and without error).
I won't detail the reason for which someone would prefer to flash a full firmware instead of just updating from an OTA, but there are some...changing CSC for ex or having a newer compatible firmware in case the one for the owner's country has not been released yet and so on...
This is not about custom ROMs that are a different thing.

I rarely have difficulty with either. I only flash an update manually if the firmware is available that way but the OTA version has been delayed. (You can preserve all your data and settings even if you flash manually.)

OTA 's are generally solid. I haven't used Odin since the note 4. I keep backed up on Samsung account, and if I do experience an issue, a reset will clear it up. All of my media is stored on SD card.
How do you store everything on an SD card. Sorry but coming from an iPhone. Thabk you .
