LTE speed, Not so fast? - Thunderbolt General

I consistently get 20Mbps down and 30Mbps up on average using speedtest.net but when I tried to upload a 14 meg video to youtube it took 5 minutes. So I tethered my laptop and transfered files during various times of the day, the transfer was about 300KB down and about 200KB up which does not reflect the speedtests.
How are your speeds while tethered?

Speed test app is not reliable . haven't had a chance to tether

If you want the real LTE speed test, go to the actual speedtest.net website on your phone and run the test. Be sure to turn off mobile view in the browser settings, otherwise going to the site directs you to the market app.

Remember - the 30MBs up on the speedtest.net app is incorrect due to a glitch, and not representative of even Verizon's own 4G LTE upload performance specs. More realistic speeds are about 6MBs up, with 12-16mBs down being average (until more devices come online).
See national test results... http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19736_7-20045376-251.html
Also... how are you tethering? Are you using the Verizon hotspot app? A USB cable? An app on a rooted Thunderbolt? You will get varying results depending on your setup, so more details are needed.

I am using the Verizon hotspot app. I was kind of disappointed at how long the uploads take to youtube from the phone itself.
On a side note, how do I upload 720p videos to youtube from the phone, the maximum playback resolution is 480p on the stuff I uploaded.

I haven't found the up speed to be as fast as they claim. I get like 1.5mb up

I'm getting excellent speeds to most of the services speakeasy offers to test against from Los Angeles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XS7ZV39Hdp8
20-30 down, usually about 3 up.
I get occasional lack of service though, haven't pinned down if it's location related or not, though.

I used it with my laptop and it felt as fast as the speedtest would indicate minus the upload glitch.

I lose a tiny amount tethering, but it is very negligible. I think I was getting 6-8 down on ST.net w/o tether and 5-7 w/ tether. I really don't pay that close attention to up speeds. Honestly, I might dump my government run crap internet(cable MI-connection) and just tether. It's better than anything my crap cable company can do.

I ran a few tests tethered and I was pulling 15 down but only 6 up. At edge of 4g though. 2_3 bars

I get around 20-30 down and 5-10 up in the browser-based speedtest.net, or when tethered.

Tethered using Mobile Hotspot.
Both Speakeasy and Speedtest, I get ~16mbps down and ~6mbps up
Actually download tests i get about 1.2 mb/s (torrent) down and 250 kb/s (dropbox) up

Between 20-40mbps down off peak and 7-20mbps during high usage peak hours here in NYC. Upload between 2.5-7mbps.
See my sig.

Until a developer creates an app that can properly channel LTE into WiFi or until Verizon/HTC update the stock app, you are better off tethering your phone via data cable to your computer. If you're using it for items such as an iPod touch, we'll just have to wait.

Use a hub if you're out of USB ports....?
Will the USB port charge the phone while it's tethering via cable? Some phones I've had in the past it wouldn't.
If it does, is it charging at a fast enough rate to match the drain of being tethered? Again, one of my previous smartphones couldn't keep up with the drain when plugged into the USB port...I had to wall charger it and do the wireless tethering if I was going for extended periods.

Another issue could be the speed of the source site. If their connection is slow, doesn't matter how fast LTE is.

Max Wifi Speed Challenge

Ok got an interesting find. Recently while testing my wifi I downloaded the mini test server from http://speedtest.net/mini.php. Installed it on my local test box running opensuse 11.3 and ran it and my laptops average 55000kbps up/down on 2.4ghz 802.11n and 75000kbps up/down on 5.0ghz. So for giggles I decided to try my captivate... It was less than stellar.
Average is 24000kbps down and 2600kbps up! Up can spike as high as 3600kbps but still pretty sad. I tried both the stock browser and Dolphin.
Whats the best you can get? Is the captivate throttled on upload or is the browser just not capable?
They have an app that does the same thing called speedtest.

I think you missed the point BradleyG, speedtest is limited to the max bandwidth of your broadband connection. I want to see whats the max wifi speed the phone is capable of sustaining.
I think it could possibly phone/rom limited. I remember when I was poking around in framework-res that one of the XML files in /Values or /XML has a key called "Throttle Kbits"
And different roms have this set at different numbers. But I have no idea what it does. I'll have to come back with more info.

Wow, that would be pretty amazing. I'll do some investigating too, because if we're really being limited by software this would be pretty useful.
Also, I find it disappointing that this phone can barely achieve half the speed of Wireless-G, when it is advertised as having Wireless-N.

[Q] T-Mobile Sensation w/ICS, ping question?

Hi!
Since I moved to ICS my ping times are 3X higher than while I was using GB.
While on GB, my ping was around 50-60ms (speedtest.net) and now with ICS, it doesn't go under 170ms. Speeds are fine, I'm getting around 5+MBit DL and around 2MBit UL. WiFi is acting the same way, with very high ping. While browsing web, high ping doesn't cause much of a problem. Problem comes up while using VOIP apps, they are all affected with high delays. Wonder, what the rest of you are experiencing?! Just post some of you pings, so I could compare results ...
Thnx!
I have the same problem, any way to fix it?
Hey is mine.

Your ping is extremely high...as I said, my ping doesn't wanna go under 170ms which makes all VOIP barely usable. BTW I'm also using Manhattan server since I live in the same area...Any other ping results to compare with???

Simple Mobile raises 3G Speed!

I noticed my web pages loading faster than usual today, did a speed test, and lo and behold; the speed is now capped at 240kbps. much better than the previous 120kbps.
Not exactly 3G yet, but they're getting there.
can anyone confirm?

After rebooting ICS so I could get data gain (gdangit), I ran a quick test...
Sure enough, you're right! On the $40 plan, now have 240 down and 300 up.
EDIT: Attatchment seems to be failing.... dunno why.
But, it's just a speedtest screenshot which is also available here: http://db.tt/UTRDeGv4
Great to hear. I switched back to tmobile because of really slow speed. I might think about switching back to simple again. 240Kbps sounds reasonable. Some more concerns though. Does youtube play fine at that speed or not. I dont need HQ, low quality like 240p is also fine .
old thread, but relevant...
It seems the may have raised their speeds again? I activated my simple mobile SIM today and ran a speedtest. Getting 297kbps. I guess the new cap is 300. Posting from NYC.

Simple has completely shut my data off in the first 3 days of service 3 months in a row. They have no set data cap, if you use their data, they shut you down. Do not go to simple, it is like wiping with a fifty, then flushing.

Is Nvidia messing with me? 300mbps speeds??

I have a very strange situation....
Today, out of nowhere, my Shield started getting a linkspeed of 300mbps. This is very odd when my internet through 702 only allows up to 30mbps. So, I went to speedtest.net on Shield and tested it...I was getting 90mb or more downloads speed with 80mb or so upload! Not only that but my ping was 3ms and it was coming out of San Jose Californina. I live in North Dakota. I don't even know how it would be possible to share network speed like that wirelessly. I have pictures below to try and prove it... I know I'm new here on XDA but I swear on everything I know and am, this is the damned truth!! It's kinda freaking me out, but, I can't say I don't like having fast as hell internet.
Something else I noticed is Nvidia HQ is based in that area. Could it be possible they messed with me?? Can anyone offer an explanation?
As of this moment I'm still getting 243mbps down. Wtf?
Well the high link speed you are seeing should be your connection speed with your router I'm pretty sure.
I'm not exactly sure what to say about the speedtest though I never really had any issues with its accuracy. You could try comcast's speedtest and see how it compares.
were you using speedtest mini?
I used the speed test.net site itself and it always has been accurate for me. On my PC my speed comes to 28mb down which is correct, but 90mb? That's crazy. I'll try a few others

I'll also add that is hasn't sat at 300 this whole time, it sometimes goes back to a more correct 24mbps, but its been 300 pretty frequently... This is the most confusing thing I've ever heard of

Why not try downloading a big file, like a driver from nvidia. They have fast connections and big files. Then you'd know how fast you are really able to pull a file.

Well I tried it but it gave me wildly different readings, one minute it would be 15mb down and 30mb up (which was very strange) and then it would be 5mb down and 22mb up. I just discounted it as inaccurate I guess... You have luck with that app?

Yes i do. The reason I asked about speedtest.net mini is in one my not thinking minutes I set it up on a LAN webserver and ran a speed test......lets just say I got really really good speeds. (that were over the LAN)
This could be some sort of buffering build onto SHIELD to allow streaming which resulted Speedtets.net reading to jump all over the place. Try my S4 and SHIELD speedtest.net over WIFI. S4 results are consistent. While SHIELD can report 2 to 4 times of speed.
The 300Mbit connection you see in the wifi settings is your connection speed to your router, not to the internet
EDIT: Also, you can take a screenshot on Shield by holding the center shield button and the volume button together for a couple seconds.

Slow Wifi?? anyone else?

Im getting terrible slow wifi speeds, and my notifications are extremely delayed compared to my other phones. we are talking 1-2 mins. anyone else experiencing this?
I have slow wifi speeds when I attempt to browse/download on the Google Play Store. It is UNBEARABLE.
I've been trying to find a solution but all I can seen to find is some info on changing DNS settings. Tried switching over to Google & OpenDNS and while that did increase the speed a little it wasn't much. The speeds are still slow.
There is an app you can download to help with the DNS settings but you have to root your phone first, and I really don't want to do that but I'm getting desperate.

Same here. New Nexus 5, wifi downloads from Play Store are PAINfully slow. Switch to LTE and they blaze. Did a Speedtest from my desktop, 22Mbit/s down....something is throttling our downloads over wifi!
No issues here. For the most part, I get the 50Mbps that Comcast provides me over Wi-Fi and, FWIW, my Location mode is set for Battery saving. You might want to try updating the firmware on your wireless router/access point. Cheers.
3-4 times slower than S3
Please don't say wifi on your N5 is super fast without comparing to other phone.
Download on mine is about 3-4 times slower than on S3 (proof is attached. tested from about 30-40ft away and a couple of walls. N5 was restored prior to testing and speedtest was the ONLY app downloaded from play store)
I don't know if my 5yr old 2.4 routers don't play nice with N5
Device is on 4.4.2. Didn't test it with 4.4.0.
Again, please don't just say how fast your device is. It may be super fast if you are 3" away from your router. You have to compare it!
If my Wi-Fi has been on for a while sometimes I get like .5 Mbps down while another phone can be pulling 15. Random disconnects for me also. A reboot solves it for a couple of hours...

But why would Galaxy S3 be faster than N5?
Are you saying N5 is expecting something different from the router, while S3 is happy with it?
My routers are old, even if there's a firmware update... it may still be an issue issue when other routers are used...like free xfinity internet that's available throughout the city.. (unless of course all other routers are newer\better than mine and will support N5 just as well as S3).
It'd be nice if you someone could test N5 and some other device from farther away, where you don't get the maximum speed

My wireless access point (WAP) upstairs is at least 30 feet away with a ceiling separating it as well. The N5 often displays two bars in this case and I still get the 50Mbps that Comcast provides me over Wi-Fi. That said, you will be unable to do 50Mbps on 11g—at minimum you’ll need an 11n or better WAP.
