Max Wifi Speed Challenge - Captivate General

Ok got an interesting find. Recently while testing my wifi I downloaded the mini test server from http://speedtest.net/mini.php. Installed it on my local test box running opensuse 11.3 and ran it and my laptops average 55000kbps up/down on 2.4ghz 802.11n and 75000kbps up/down on 5.0ghz. So for giggles I decided to try my captivate... It was less than stellar.
Average is 24000kbps down and 2600kbps up! Up can spike as high as 3600kbps but still pretty sad. I tried both the stock browser and Dolphin.
Whats the best you can get? Is the captivate throttled on upload or is the browser just not capable?

They have an app that does the same thing called speedtest.

That's correct but the OP is attempting to verify the MAX wifi throughput on te Captivate device, thus the Local server on his desktop.

I think you missed the point BradleyG, speedtest is limited to the max bandwidth of your broadband connection. I want to see whats the max wifi speed the phone is capable of sustaining.

I think it could possibly phone/rom limited. I remember when I was poking around in framework-res that one of the XML files in /Values or /XML has a key called "Throttle Kbits"
And different roms have this set at different numbers. But I have no idea what it does. I'll have to come back with more info.

Wow, that would be pretty amazing. I'll do some investigating too, because if we're really being limited by software this would be pretty useful.
Also, I find it disappointing that this phone can barely achieve half the speed of Wireless-G, when it is advertised as having Wireless-N.

I apologize if I put it in the wrong forum, but I didn't think that editing the build.prop file or regulating 4G speeds that AT&T hasn't "given" us access to yet was a general question.
Aside from that, is it possible?

Your missing what the dev section is for.
If someone had a custom Build.prop they wanted to share, that is a Dev post. Asking a question about development is not.
no, from what I've been tinkering with in the test settings (accessed with *#0011#) and pressing menu, back, selecting "network control", then "hspa cat control", I'm able to get better speeds on CAT 10 than CAT 14, but other's speeds may vary. (I know I'm a heavy user that uses over 15 to 20 GB per month too, so it may just be going through a CAT that I'm not throttled on too.... )
But with all above, I agree that this should be in General....
the inspire has hsupa disabled foe the att version with a line in build.prop. hsupa has been disabled on all att phone cept the iphone and the infuse. tere have been different meathods to disable it but is irrelevant because the infuse has it enabled. ther may be other settings to change but not to get even better speeds but I don't think it will be in build.prop or yield the same results.

WHY????? he has had his phone since it came out i think.
Someone needs to build a CAT setting tester/optimizer!

No, AT&T has. HSPA+ is still 3G, even though AT&T calls it 4g. They may re-brand all the user-facing stuff to say 4G, but the phone's technical information that you aren't supposed to see will refer to it by its technical term, 3G.
if its not LTE , its not 4g Sorry to burst your bubble. I truely miss Tmobile when it comes to data. I would get around 6megs down all the time on "3g". I dont even get 3 most times with at&t and the upload is such horrible ****.

LTE isn't 4G either, if you want to lump HSPA+ into ' it's not 4G' category. LTE currently offers nothing remotely close to the original ITU specs.

I typically get 3-4 Mbps at work/home. Last week I was about 4 miles away, got 8.9Mbps. Another day I was about 5 miles further, got 5.5 Mbps. Depends on which tower you're on.

220MB of data used in less than 1 day. WHAT?

I just checked my t-mobile account and noticed I used 220mb of data since yesterday afternoon. How in the world is this possible if I was on wifi 90% of the time?
This sucks because I lose 4g speeds after 2GB of data.
are you sure that's only since yesterday & not from the start of your billing cycle?

Couldn't find the specific post/thread I was quoting, but I did find this, on Android Police:
Update: Don’t install this app until it gets an update – it will turn your GPS on every 10 seconds to update your location info, and won’t stop unless you Force Stop it from the Manage Applications screen. It was at 68% on my phone’s battery usage menu after 6 hours of doing little with my phone aside from checking e-mail sporadically. Yuck.

If it's using GPS to update your location every 10 seconds, that needs data. So I suspect, if you have this app installed, this could be your problem.
Get a data usage app that tells you what app is using how much data. If it shows that it is indeed this new T-Mobile app, there's your problem

Just downloaded it. I'm not concerned with data (tho still want to read that post), I'm more concerned with why a lot of apps that I don't even use seem to always be on.
I think it's because they're stock apps and the default is always on. Once we have root, we should be able to get rid of them, and once we can flash ROMs, we can install stock HTC software, or Android Revolution HD
Just another reason to have s-off and root
Ok, after downloading traffic counter, it looks like it IS my fault for the excessive data usage.
It's showing the speed test app as using 130mb of data (since last reboot, which was yesterday). I admit I went a little crazy on the speedtest app yesterday and today (I've never had 4g speeds before switching to tmobile), but why does it use SO much data? I did quite a few tests, but still.
I tried that traffic counter app. XDA is killing my data 27mb. I spend to much time at this place.

As I'm on an unlimited data plan, I don't really care about data usage. I can go up to something like 5gb and my network (giffgaff, easily the best network in the UK) doesn't really care! The only thing I can't do is tether, but I can create a wifi hotspot for when I need to get on the internet on a bigger screen
If you're in the UK, I strongly implore you to take a look at giffgaff. Link in my sig

if you have a fast connection it needs to send/receiver bigger files to get an accurate account of what your speed it. if it only used like a 512KB file then it'd show your speed as 1028238234978234978MBps.

just did 2 tests to test the theory. 30MB down/8MB up

Is Nvidia messing with me? 300mbps speeds??

I have a very strange situation....
Today, out of nowhere, my Shield started getting a linkspeed of 300mbps. This is very odd when my internet through 702 only allows up to 30mbps. So, I went to speedtest.net on Shield and tested it...I was getting 90mb or more downloads speed with 80mb or so upload! Not only that but my ping was 3ms and it was coming out of San Jose Californina. I live in North Dakota. I don't even know how it would be possible to share network speed like that wirelessly. I have pictures below to try and prove it... I know I'm new here on XDA but I swear on everything I know and am, this is the damned truth!! It's kinda freaking me out, but, I can't say I don't like having fast as hell internet.
Something else I noticed is Nvidia HQ is based in that area. Could it be possible they messed with me?? Can anyone offer an explanation?
As of this moment I'm still getting 243mbps down. Wtf?
Well the high link speed you are seeing should be your connection speed with your router I'm pretty sure.
I'm not exactly sure what to say about the speedtest though I never really had any issues with its accuracy. You could try comcast's speedtest and see how it compares.
were you using speedtest mini?
I used the speed test.net site itself and it always has been accurate for me. On my PC my speed comes to 28mb down which is correct, but 90mb? That's crazy. I'll try a few others

I'll also add that is hasn't sat at 300 this whole time, it sometimes goes back to a more correct 24mbps, but its been 300 pretty frequently... This is the most confusing thing I've ever heard of

Why not try downloading a big file, like a driver from nvidia. They have fast connections and big files. Then you'd know how fast you are really able to pull a file.

How about you try the speedtest.net android app?
Well I tried it but it gave me wildly different readings, one minute it would be 15mb down and 30mb up (which was very strange) and then it would be 5mb down and 22mb up. I just discounted it as inaccurate I guess... You have luck with that app?

Yes i do. The reason I asked about speedtest.net mini is in one my not thinking minutes I set it up on a LAN webserver and ran a speed test......lets just say I got really really good speeds. (that were over the LAN)
This could be some sort of buffering build onto SHIELD to allow streaming which resulted Speedtets.net reading to jump all over the place. Try my S4 and SHIELD speedtest.net over WIFI. S4 results are consistent. While SHIELD can report 2 to 4 times of speed.
The 300Mbit connection you see in the wifi settings is your connection speed to your router, not to the internet
EDIT: Also, you can take a screenshot on Shield by holding the center shield button and the volume button together for a couple seconds.

Slow Wifi?? anyone else?

Im getting terrible slow wifi speeds, and my notifications are extremely delayed compared to my other phones. we are talking 1-2 mins. anyone else experiencing this?
I have slow wifi speeds when I attempt to browse/download on the Google Play Store. It is UNBEARABLE.
I've been trying to find a solution but all I can seen to find is some info on changing DNS settings. Tried switching over to Google & OpenDNS and while that did increase the speed a little it wasn't much. The speeds are still slow.
There is an app you can download to help with the DNS settings but you have to root your phone first, and I really don't want to do that but I'm getting desperate.

Same here. New Nexus 5, wifi downloads from Play Store are PAINfully slow. Switch to LTE and they blaze. Did a Speedtest from my desktop, 22Mbit/s down....something is throttling our downloads over wifi!
No issues here. For the most part, I get the 50Mbps that Comcast provides me over Wi-Fi and, FWIW, my Location mode is set for Battery saving. You might want to try updating the firmware on your wireless router/access point. Cheers.
3-4 times slower than S3
Please don't say wifi on your N5 is super fast without comparing to other phone.
Download on mine is about 3-4 times slower than on S3 (proof is attached. tested from about 30-40ft away and a couple of walls. N5 was restored prior to testing and speedtest was the ONLY app downloaded from play store)
I don't know if my 5yr old 2.4 routers don't play nice with N5
Device is on 4.4.2. Didn't test it with 4.4.0.
Again, please don't just say how fast your device is. It may be super fast if you are 3" away from your router. You have to compare it!
If my Wi-Fi has been on for a while sometimes I get like .5 Mbps down while another phone can be pulling 15. Random disconnects for me also. A reboot solves it for a couple of hours...

But why would Galaxy S3 be faster than N5?
Are you saying N5 is expecting something different from the router, while S3 is happy with it?
My routers are old, even if there's a firmware update... it may still be an issue issue when other routers are used...like free xfinity internet that's available throughout the city.. (unless of course all other routers are newer\better than mine and will support N5 just as well as S3).
It'd be nice if you someone could test N5 and some other device from farther away, where you don't get the maximum speed

My wireless access point (WAP) upstairs is at least 30 feet away with a ceiling separating it as well. The N5 often displays two bars in this case and I still get the 50Mbps that Comcast provides me over Wi-Fi. That said, you will be unable to do 50Mbps on 11g—at minimum you’ll need an 11n or better WAP.

YES !!! My router is a DLink 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and is working awesome.

Moto G and Three Uk to act as home broadband?

My sister's family live in the countryside and ADSL there is extremely slow (0.5Mb.)
I tested my 3G speed there with my Nexus 5 and managed to get a speed of 7.5Mb, and thought that they may be able to use a cheap android phone in conjunction with a Moto G to act as a wireless hotspot for the home.
I know Three's One Plan allows tethering through a phone, but not through a 3G router, or MiFi.
Was wondering wether if it would be better to have a router connect to the Moto G's hotspot, and then for devices to connect to the router as it may send out a better wifi signal around the home?
Would be interested in other's thoughts.
Thanks
Doesn't work like that, the devices need to connect directly to the phone. I did this myself for over a year with a note 2 and it was dire, if one person is doing something even remotely demanding, you can forget about anyone else getting any pages loaded.

Hi, thank for your reply.
Was performance really that bad.
As I say, their current connection is dreadful so surely could only be better?
Also whats stopping using a router/wireless bridge connect with the Moto G as the hotspot, then the router/wirelessbridge being the point all devices connect to?
Im just interested in why... not being funny with you
Sorry for the slow reply, I didn't even check this thread (yup I'm a moron lol). I've never tried the method of using a bridge so I can't comment, as for the performance, it will certainly be better for a single person using it (or even a few if it's simple browsing/Facebook games/low res 360p YouTube etc), but if anyone tries HD streaming, or online gaming, or downloading a file, they will get a so-so experience and anyone else won't get a look in.

It should be fine with a router connected to the Moto G's hotspot as a client and eveything else in the house will connect to the router, will get ofcourse better coverage at the house and you can place the Moto G somewhere where it will pick best signal from the mobile network.

Perhaps, but that won't increase the speed for anyone, just adds another link to the chain.

Well, we ain't taking about speed boost here, it's about providing the entire house with a little bit better internet than they currently have.
I tether all the time on three I get fast speed between 12 am & 3pm then speed drops because I have high usage last month I used 100gig

You've missed the point of my post. Whether all the devices in the house connect directly to the phone, or through a bridged router, nothing will change at all. It is simply adding an unnecessary link to the chain.

Not at all. If you actually read the thread you will see I have provided factual information from actually having the experience of using what the OP is asking for. You have simply posted an off-the-cuff troll post with no intention of providing any information and have started getting aggressive for no reason.

Read again what I`ve posted, if I wanted to troll you I wouldn';t even care to point that you've gone totally off-topic.
