[Q] Using SIP on Nexus S - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I recently joined up to a SIP provider and am loving the cheap calls. At the moment however, I can only use the SIP when I am connected via wifi and not while i am connected via 3G. I have searched why this is, and have come to the conclusion that t-mobile uk (which is the network i am on) have blocked voip over 3g. (i gave them a ring and they have confirmed this).
So my question essentially is, is there a way i can get around this on the nexus s? for example, t-mobile must be using some criteria to filter voip, such as port number 5060 which is the standard port used for SIP, or some other criteria which i do not know. Is is possible for me to change the settings so that I can use voip over 3g?
I have tried changing the port to a different one than 5060, but to no avail. Any ideas would be much appreciated...
Thanks,

Ahh brilliant. I keep on finding more and more reasons for switching over to CM7. I really should do it. Thanks for the quick answer.

So i am now running CyanogenMod7 and its awesome but i still cant do SIP over 3G... are there specific settings i need to set to enable it?
it could well be that t-mobile have just blocked voip over 3g (which is what they said to me when i phoned them up) but i was hoping there is a way around that...

Please help, my 8525 is faster then my tilt....

ok i have two phones, the att 8525 with tnt rom on it, and i gotta att tilt with dutty's latest rom. i use the internet sharing a lot, and for some reason my 8525 is waaay faster then my tilt, can anyone help me solve this issue???
i was gonna search for a solution, but i wouldnt know exactly what words to use to find exactly what im looking for, someone please help me.
well then that makes 2 of us that dont know what your looking for. You havent given a very thorough explanation of the problem you are looking to solve...
ok, what i mean is that, for some reason, when i connect my cingular 8525 to my laptop for internet sharing, the speed of the connection is as fast as dsl, and when i connect my att tilt and i use the internet sharing, the speed of the connection is as slow as dial up.

do they each have a different sim card in then or are you swapping them? is the proxy enabled or disabled? what network do they indicate (i.e. E, 3G, H)? are they both in the same location when testing, etc....
if you want more help give as much info as possible...
different sim cards, att tilt connects to MEdia net, and yes they both in the same locations the att tilt has the 3g simbol and the att 8525 has the H simbol, but only when im on the internet sharing, when i disconnect it it goes back to 3g

so already you have several different variables that could be causing it. first is the difference from 3G to H. if the tilt isnt truly picking up H then your not going to be even anywhere close in speeds. 2nd you might be slowed down by different data connections, etc.. i would also try swapping sim cards and try each phone out to see if you get the same results. also the radio that is on the tilt could be causing issues also. Some radios have faster speeds whereas others do not, etc... There is probably not going to be 1 magical answer here to solve your problem.
so is there a way that i can make my tilt pick up that H? or if you know, what rom or radio do you reccomend me for that.
i want a rom and radio that i can share my fast internet connection with my laptop, and that also has the gps

search for an app called KaiserTweak.
And radios performance seem to vary depending on your location.. so just because one radio works for me doesnt mean its going to work for you. The best thing i can suggest is to just experiment till you find your sweet spot.
you definately need to enable your H... if that doesnt' work try a different radio.
ok, imma find that app, but quick question, what other rom can i use other then dutty's? i dont think im liking it too much

WM6 Upgrade now No signal Radio bad?

I have tried several radio roms to try and fix the problem but I always get the icon looking for a signal never detects GPRS or any signal does this mean I have a bad radio? I have the PN Antenna,AFM50-000015,ACON where can I get one? Any help would be great!
Do you get normal phone coverage? If so, have you set up GPRS correctly for your network?
Keyboard for WM6
Dear XDA peeps any idea where i can download a i-phone like keyboard( directly on my ppc) that has all the new tweaks (pop up letter, skin...)

Thanks for the reply, Not sure if I have the GPRS settings correct, went through all of them and changed some things, let the device sit for hours but still no signal.. I'm lost
Does the SIM work in other cellphones?
Cuz I have a SIM here that's expired and all it does when popped into any phone is try search for signal which it doesn't find any of course.
Had same issue...
AT&T/Cingular USA primarily uses 850MHz signal; 1900MHz is concentrated in larger cities. However, T-Mobile uses 1900MHz...You may have to switch. I had the same problem and found T-Mobile as my solution. I Hope this helps...

[Devs] Lets get Wifi Calling working on these custom ROMs,

I require this since i have low signal at my house and rely on the Wifi Calling app, and i'm sure i'm not alone. I'm devoting this thread to this. JBoogie, i've been told you're the man with the skills here, so if i can help in any way let me know.
Agreed! I've asked more and more, but I haven't gotten an answer - I've no signal in my dorm, where I live! And i need wifi calling

Side question.. does anybody know of which SBFs contain wifi calling?
Wifi calling? Wifi can access moible network? Or do you mean VOIP?
Maybe should turn to your carrier. And ask them whether they can supply sets like femtocell.
in defy cm7 2.3.5...voip calls works..inbound/outbound..you just need to have a active SIP line to apply in the internet calling accts.
as long as you have a data/wifi active & connected your defy-its magic.
tried it myself & used a SIP acct..works great on overseas intl calls too..
I assume that everyone is talking about the Kineto UMA app that is being introduced on some of the ?Orange branded roms ?
There is a good thread here on XDA which has the Kineto android app, but it looks like it depends on other dependancies which need to be built into a custom rom.
Will be watching this thread with interest though.

In the US, T-Mobile provides WiFi Calling free for its customers. Another benefit is people can call your mobile phone number
If someone using a Froyo rom, using tmobile US service, and does not currently have Wifi calling - send me a pm.
I think I have this working, but as I'm not in the US, or using tmobile, I cannot test this.
So ya get in touch and well see what we can do.

Skype (and other wifi calling apps) are available on the market; so why ask to 'bloat' roms with this??
Just use MarketEnabler and try a US provider if Skype is not available for you to download.

I don't think some of you guys are catching this. Lookup T-Mobile uma. It allows you to make calls using wifi when you are out of the coverage area. It is not a separate sip acct, it uses your cell minutes.

[Q] Custom Roms won't connect to ATT Microcell

Ok, so my situation is a bit complicated, so bear with me. I've got an ATT voice plan, with no data or text. I've got an unlocked/rooted SK4G. I'm currently running GOv3.3. I was working just fine on the ATT network, but the people in the office next to mine couldn't get ATT signal, so they setup this little ATT microcell thing. It's about the side of a router and I guess it's basically giving them access to ATT via VOIP. They add their phone numbers to the list and then they can get on. Somehow, this thing is running over the regular ATT signal that I WAS getting just fine in my office on the other side of the wall. Now, I can't connect to ATT's network while inside the building. He's tried to add me to his list, but I can't connect to his microcell either. It doesn't show up at all when I search for carriers. He said that when he added me to his list, it gave him some message about how my number isn't registered with the att network. I'm trying a couple of different modems now just in case it's a modem issue, but I have little hope of that working. Any thoughts?
Have you tried manually searching for available providers to see what shows up?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I guess I didn't explain clearly. It shows ATT when you search, but it won't register n the network. If I unplug that damned microcell thing they're using, then I can connect just fine.

Apn is access point name its pretty much the address and port that your phone uses to connect to your network. You can find the setting for this under network settings.
Your using a T-Mobile phone to run on att I'm surprised you get service at all. Even having the device unlocked you still need to set up the apn which by default would be all tmobile. Definetly Google it because I do not know att apn settings I've always used T-Mobile. Hope my brief summary was at least a little help

This is actually a REALLY common thing to do. As long as you're using a GSM phone, it doesn't matter what provider it was originally used on, you can use it on another GSM network. This is my 3rd such phone (from t-mobile to ATT) and I've never had any problem getting them to work on ATT. And this phone still works just fine on ATT also...as long as I'm not within range of that damned microcell thing they're using in the office on the other side of this wall. As soon as I step outside, I connect back up to the normal ATT network.

[Q] T-Mobile wifi calling on Nexus 5?

I recently switched from my T-Mobile Galaxy S3 to a new Nexus 5, but sadly I didn't realize "wifi calling" was a t-mobile post-installed mod only on their branded devices; so Nexus 5 doesn't have that.
Are there any ROMs that contain the T-Mobile wi-fi calling patch? (or something to that effect, though I really appreciate the ability to connect to wifi anywhere in the world and use the phone as if I was in the US)
Thanks!

I believe from what I read that the Tmobile wifi calling app has to be included with the system as there extra files that can't be simply thrown into an APK. If i recall, it had to do with the modems. I ran a rom on my gs2 that didnt have the wifi calling and spent hours searching for it and found all that info out. Basically if the ROM doesn't come from T-Mobile and is AOSP it's not gonna have wifi calling, and it's not as simple as throwing it all in an APK.
Since the Nexus 5 didn't come with it, you can pretty well give up sadly. I'm just as upset as you are, trust me

Thats a cool work around, i've seen it done for a over a year, however, google voice is dropping SIP support soon from what I heard. There are an app in the market that does this for you. I can't remember exactly what it's called. A buddy of mine showed it to me a few months back. There was a huge notice under the app that said that google voice was dropping support for this setup soon. /rumormill.
TMobile Settings for SIP Accounts?
I noticed in the new KitKat dialer application has settings for Internet calling (SIP) accounts. I hope, in the near future, TMobile will simply publish those settings so Wifi calling will be easily accessible in the system settings (vs trying bake it into the system settings separately for 4.x and newer or that app for 2.x and below).
I know I watched this thread for over a year when I was on my Nexus4 and it never happened:

This was true with the original version of T-Mobile WiFi Calling, called UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access). T-Mobile WiFi Calling now uses IMS, which they actually released into the open-source world. Unfortunately no developer has stepped forward to take this open-source information and incorporate it into an N5 rom

This is very useful thank you. Not as awesome an answer as I was hoping but close. I'll search a bit and see what the status is there. Sadly, it doesn't look promising. It appears that code has been released for 2 years now and I haven't seen anyone bundle it into a ROM yet.

New to T-mo so I don't know if this is what you are looking for but if you go into the setting in the phone apk, there is an option for wifi calling. haven't tried it, but thought i'd put it out there.
How would you set up a sip acct to do this?

There's Internet Calling, not Wifi. Internet means using a SIP account, like Magicjack or some other VOIP service.
