[ROM][Devs Only][You've been Warned] RoyalLiquid - 3/22/2011 - HTC Inspire 4G

RoyalLiquid - This is a Q&D port of our RoyalLiquid rom for the Mytouch4G.
Warning! We Are Not Responsible For Anything That Happens To Your Device. I don't own an Inspire, so I haven't been able to test/troubleshoot.
The Team That Brings You all Royal Roms:
Release Name: RoyalLiquid
Release Version: Pre-Alpha
Base Firmware: 2.2.1
Kernel Version: Stock Kernel
Recovery Required: 3.0.0.6
Wipe Required: Full wipe each flash (unless otherwise stated). This is how you should wipe:
Main Recovery Menu:
1. Wipe data / factory reset
2. wipe cache partition
Advanced Recovery Menu:
3. Wipe Dalvik Cache
Mounts and Storage Recovery Menu:
4. Format Boot
5. Format System
6 Format SDcard (optional but sometimes fixes issues - Be warned you will loose everything on your SDcard. Pictures, music, videos everything)
Special instructions: Give 2 minutes+ to boot on first boot please.
This should be common knowledge by now but if you want to complain about an issue make sure you have a log cat also you should be running a log cat on every first boot. If you dont have ADB set up on your computer follow this very easy guide to set it up. It truly only takes a few minutes.
Sceen shot below are how this rom looks on the Mytouch4G. YMMV.
What Works:
* It boots.
What Doesn't:
*Probably a lot - Devs only. Someone should pick this up and try and fix the issues as I don't have the device and wont be able to.
Roms:
http://www.multiupload.com/0H9W65HB4J

I warn you again - This is not for the faint of heart. I just want the base out there so hopefully someone can pick it up and make it functional as a daily driver.

Just remember. Most things probably wont work and you'll be flashing back soon after.I was asked to port this, but without having the inspire I cant test at all ro fix issues. You guys have some good devs around here, so someone should be able to pick this up and get it usable.

This could get very interesting very quickly. Thank you for the port !

Anyone try this yet i am downloading as i type.

Just flashed, booted ok, data seems to work, tried to turn on wifi, turned on then bootlooped. No sound but this all needs to be worked out.I will play some more when i get home from work.

Working on a new version with mr2sweet. Hopefully more will work. Its hard, I send him a rom, he flashes, he tells me what doesn't work. Its a slow process.

If you want I can test stuff out as well, I'm pretty good at finding oddball things.

ill wait till progress comes along. i hate bootloops :-(

Progress!!!
I've been working on the rom today. I've made a lot of progress. I got the status bar showing and the acer lockscreen working. I got wifi to the point that it gets suck on obtaining ip adress and then loops back to scanning etc. If someone can fix the wifi so it will finish obtaining an adress and connect that will be fixed. Also if someone can fix sound. There is no sound from the earpiece or the external speaker. I am going to continue to work on it and probably post and updated rom tonight. If anyone has any ideas to fix these issues it would help a lot.

Thanks so much option94. Love the liquid metal on my incredible. Hope we can get some interest in this for the inspire.

Yeah, dev section over here looks pretty boring. Need to liven things up a little.

Last night I flashed the ROM and this morning I found some issues that I'm sure you're aware of but I will point them out just in case.
Doesn't Work:
Home Button and Return Button
WiFi
Otherwise Didn't notice anything major, it seems the Menu button acts like the Home button. I will be glad to continue testing when there is an update.

Here is an UPDATED rom!
here is a link to an updated rom. Almost everything works and works well. The only thing that doesn't work is there is no sound from the speaker or the earpiece. If a dev could please fix this issue it could be used as a daily rom. Someone please help fix sound.

[GINGERBREAD] Android 2.3 port from SDK for Dream (2708 kernel)

AOSP 2.3 has been released and this thread is now useless
If you wanna follow our work with aosp 2.3.1 for dream/sapphire :
Source Code Repo for Gingerbread (Dream and Sapphire builds)
Compiled builds
MODs bootanimation, superuser, terminal emulator, live wall papers support, google apps, market 2.2.7, etc...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Since people were asking for it, here is a quick port for the G1
Thanks and credits goes to :
-pershoot using his kernel boot-cm_2635.9_ds_32b_radio2708-oc-uv-xtra-ram-fp-120810
-seo using mostly his port for magic as base
I'm currently using the 14MB ram hack with radio 2.22.28.25 & hboot 1.33.0013d with CM6.1
If you are not you need to follow these steps first : 2708+ enabled kernel [14MB ram with radio 2.22.27.08/2.22.28.25 & hboot 1.33.0013d]
OR
you can always try to flash a non 2708 kernel from pershoot like boot-cm_2635.9_ds_32b-oc-uv-xtra-ram-fp-120810 after flashing this ROM but I have'nt tested it myself.
working : data/radio but like all other ports no mic
not working : mostly everything
seo has wifi working on magic, I'm looking into his wpa_supplicant.exec script but changing wlan.ko and driver did'nt worked.
For wiping I suggest using Ohsaka SuperWipe as the update script does'nt wipe /data partition.

Nice, I'll flash it shortly

I just did a SuperWipe + nand restore to CM6.1 and both HOME and CALL buttons are working properly.
I just added a link for Ohsaka's SuperWipe in the OP, use it to wipe before doing your restore. (needs to be flashed)

thanks, but I wiped it with Ohsaka SuperWipe, before and after 2.3, I don't understand, I'll try it again, but I'll try to fix_permissions first, don't think it could have something with my issue, but it's worth trying
and one more thing, my PC now doesn't recognize my phone as USB device, will try something and post results

Flash a stock ROM? It's probably a good idea to make a new thread for your issue tbh, since it's not really that relevant to the ROM.

It sounds more like it's on life support, and a lot of people (mainly developers) wanna pull the plug. To them, the G1 phones are nothing but a waste of time, when compared to a lot of the newer phones on the market.
The reality though, it isn't much different then a lot of new phones on the market. I gotta have a hardware keyboard, and that limits me to the myTouch 3G Slide, and the G2. Frankly, the Slide is essentially the same thing as my G1, with lots more memory, and a better camera. My friend replaced his G1 with the Cliq, and he thought it was an upgrade, but didn't understand why Angry Birds was still slow?
So long as there's App2SD applications, over priced phones, and smart coders, the G1 lives on.

LinuxBozo experience of Ghostie.Napkinz

Just wanted to start off and say a BIG THANKS for LinuxBozo and his amazing infuse mod which lets us use the other samsung roms (JVQ restricted )
I have been experimenting ALOT with various roms and thought i would share some of which i have tested out so far, the only one which gave me some issues was Sensation 2.0 , seems like when you reboot, sometimes you get no netwrok, then reboot, and icons are missing, so its a question.
Obviously this isnt really an OFFICAL rom for the Infuse, but id like to know if anyone else has had nice experience or recommendations for use with this dude's rom.

Hellraiser uses the same Rogers RIL that Infused v2 does, so probably not. (RIL is one of the things that gets swapped out.)
It's often hard to tell for sure because many frameworks won't show HSPA+ even if the RIL/modem are operating in that mode. Hell, even our original Froyo ROMs were broken in that way - they displayed UMTS when in HSPA+ mode. (UMTS is plain vanilla 3G.)
GingerReal - V7.1.4 JVQ
Been running GingerReal V7.1.4 JVQ with Infusion GB kernel and I must say it's snappy. I have not had a single problem with anything. And from what I read Quadrant scores don't mean much, but I got a 3500 OC at 1.6. without Stagefright. I did'nt know Stagefright was til I Googled it. But my phone is very fast and I am very happy. Thanks Linux

Which ROM did you test for JVP , i might give it a whirl, i finally finished going through all those roms, The Vibrant rom wasnt very exciting, and seemed to lack the extended power menu drop down which has Reboot, recovery download mode and such, thats a big thing for me.
Darky was my favorite so far,I might try Sensation. If anyone wants to test out a couple JVP roms and try adding in the APN settings, lets see what comes up and post which rom you tested.
Thanks everyone for their input on this, im getting more interested now and i will be trying to use the Infusion Kernel with some of these roms and see if i get a performance boost.
Im not sure if its just me, but whenever i reboot ANY of those roms which are installed with Linux's software , it seems sometimes the icons on the app drawer l ike disappearing, then when i reboot, apps reappear, but the Network to ATT gets cut off, then i reboot again, and sometimes its normal..........Any ideas?

BTW, the default behavior in Sensation is no extended power menu, but if you use the app "Theme Settings (included in the ROM) you can change this.
As to the other issues - that's a new one, I haven't seen it before.

I ran Hawkish 4 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032599
I chose it because I saw that the ROM included the background effect from the SGSII, which while I have the SGSII & this feature seems to throw my photos to the way over saturated side - its more appealing for home screen settings and every day use since everything just looked almost wet or gooey. But the setting didn't work I imagine a kernel conflict, but I'm sure this could be built into one of our ROMS later and I wouldn't mind helping out with putting it together.
Overall I thought this ROM was a little laggy for the phone, I'm sure there are others out there that could run MUCH better or smoother.
I find it funny that we get a stock phone and find it boring so we flash a brand new phone to something completely different within an hour and when the next phone comes out we want their stock stuff so we can see how it is on OUR phone...HAHAHA -addicted

I think those are controls for Voodoo Color which:
1) Is extremely difficult to implement on our device (significantly different screen)
2) Is not necessary on our device - our screen fixes most if not all of the problems VC was intended to fix.

Yes sir, I believe you are exactly right. I normally don't like over saturation, but on a HUGE screen it looked great with some gooey gingerbread green stuff around it. My photography looked horrible especially HDR shots, worth it though. The colors on the SGSII and this phone are pretty different tho. But a lot to do with the same resolution on a smaller screen. The screen on the Infuse is a big (no pun) factor that held me to it rather than the SGSII

Okay heres me scenario, hope it helps understand.
1) started off with phone already rooted and such and previously had Infused V2.00 full., Downloaded a JVQ rom ( like Darky's ) , and then downloaded Linux Bozo's rom/mod ) Put both of the zips on the ROOT of the internal SD .
2) backup info and boot into Red recovery.( Shut off device, then hold Vol - and + while pressing power ), release power and continue holding both volume keys).
3) Perform the following
Wipe Data/Factory Reset, Wipe Cache partition, Wipe Dalvik Cache
Install zip from SD card and select the ROM you want to use
Do install from SD card again and this time select the Linux Bozo zip
4) Reboot and you will be in your rom after 10 minutes ( be patient, it takes time ). If you want better performance, install the Infuse GB Kernel. Get it here

5) Enjoy the rom

I just followed the exact instructions the OP posted up above. With 1 mishap, when I downloaded what I thought was the ROM....I only got the lock-screen (what happens when you read things way too fast & think you know what you did) which I already downloaded and flashed
I mounted the SD card while in recovery and pushed the file containing the ROM over to the phone - flashed it - flashed LinuzBozo's stuff - rebooted & things went well all I had to do was add APN's back.
I really like my current set up BUT I'll probably find something else, before I load the ROM I want I'll run this again with a JVP base and see how things go & defiantly let you guys know. Now I'm curious why it doesn't work for other people.

I think sometimes people either have a bad flash or don't properly wipe data. Same reason lots of people randomly had problems with Infused. (I haven't tried JVP myself though.)
Well, i just finished wrapping up my favorite roms, and i keep jumping between the Sensation rom, and Darky's Rom .
BUT!
I always data wipe, clear cache, factory reset
Idk if this helps, but i saw theres a new Linuz BETA 6 , perhaps this might help problems that a few have been going through.
In closing, i really hope more ROMS designed for the Infuse come fast , i got a feeling with this new mod there will be many to come

This is a very good point. The data wipe is vital for the Infuse no matter what. I have tried it with and without the wipe & all sorts of very strange things go wrong at random. Market apps wont download - Errors when using data - Youtube errors - issues with email. Each time I did it different ones would act up too, never the same.
Full Wipe so far has fixed it without failure
*Edit - Full for me same as prasadudwadia said above - data, cache, and factory reset.

Says: Error next to the check mark to turn wifi on or off. :crying:
Everything else seems to work including sound.

Bluetooth address: works!!
Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem?

You could flash back to stock firmware and try again. If the error persists then the files are probably not right for your phone.

The files the OP pulled are for his phone based on the baseband shown. It looks like it may be related to the OTA update that came through recently.

That explains it, the OTA update includes a slightly changed kernel (based on what I saw in the diffs) that is likely causing your WiFi issue. Can you try applying motorhead's kernel from here and see if WiFi starts working? I know it is not a full fix, but it should get your wifi back to working while motorhead and I coordinate on getting a stock kernel that can be flashed from CWR put together.
YEEEEE HAAAAWWWWW
I got some WIFI !!!!
Camera, BT and sound, seems like everything works.
Can't imagine why not a "Full fix".
Thank You !!!!
Says there is an OTA update, after it downloads, I get tossed into CWM bootloader 6.1.1 and the update doesn't get applied.
All I do is choose 'reboot system'.
Also I'm getting ...
"[ AT&T Address Book] Checking Subscriber Information"
when I touch contacts.
I am not an AT&T customer, I use STLK the BYOP program.
We really need a custom ROM for this great device, no bloat, no AT&T updates, no AT&T bloatwares, No CIQ, No City ID.
I would be HAPPY to PAY for a custom ROM and have it delivered two weeks from last Thursday. Jellybean?
Someone like me who chooses a rugged phone may not be into all the bells and whistles, so a basic stripped down
ROM would be great.
and yes, I am getting lag coming out of deep sleep. may have to hit power button twice to unlock.
Can't wait to try Motorheads soon to be released power kernel...

There is an updater app you can freeze to prevent this from running. Nicedream06 and motorhead1991 have it disabled w/o ill effects.

Working on it with a few others "right now". We have stable boot in ICS (CM9 and AOSP builds) but the modem is dead. No cell service at all. There are other problems but we are focused on getting the antenna up and going.

Check the super thread. I have an ODIN image that is pretty stripped down and it includes the 6.x version of CWR. I left a few things in "just in case" but they can easily be stripped out using any of the various root tools for removing system apps.

If you can post over in motorhead's thread that you are experiencing the problem it will help out to know that it is common. He mentioned he was looking into it. I'm sure something will be ready soonish.

The lag is a noted issue, along with the WiFi shutting off randomly and intermittently. I'm researching these issues as much as I can to find a fix, but I can only do so much so fast .
I was going to start a new thread but then I found this. I too had the issue with I the wifi turning off and the screen lag. After reflashing the no bloat Odin image and the 1.1 kernel my wifi turns on, but does not find any networks. It just searches then shuts off? Any ideas? I wonder if the stock kernel being worked on would fix this or if there is something else wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I sent the rugby smart to SAM to have it completely reloaded. when it comes back, i will try to make a back up much like i make an image of a hard drive...if that's possible.
For my PC, I have an image of this existing hard drive. If i pull it out and put in a BLANK hard drive, I can write the image to the new disk with all my apps installed...I use that feature often with my pc's and others...for mine, I frequently make a new updated image and delete the oldest one.
Once I change the bootloader, is it possible to get it back if I backed up with with Kies?
You guys are in luck. Kernel1.2 should be out shortly with the lag and wifi fixed . I'm waiting to hear back from another tester, but so far ut's proven stable. I've only had one error pop up, and that was after running pretty hard.
Motorhead1991, Is this for the Samsung Rugby Smart?
How much of, if any, overclocking??
Can you also tweak a non-overclocked version without "City ID" app, "Carrier IQ" app and possibly no AT&T bloatware??
You rock for everything thus far
No overclocking just yet, but I'm giving it hell. On the bright side, Kemonine and myself are currently treading in uncharted territory for this device (see if anyone gets my reference)
And to answer your question, yes it'll be for the Rugby.

Yeah, it actually did hurt to ask that one.
So after flashing the following new odin images
•Stock boot / kernel:
•Stock Boot + Stock Recovery + Stock System:
•Stock Boot + CWR 6.0.1.2 + No Bloat System:
My WiFi still turns on, searches for a while, finds nothing and turns back off! I have no idea what to do next. Any ideas?

When you flashed via ODIN did it show it was flashing the boot area? In the status window it should tell you which images are being flashed to the device. Can you re-try the stock boot/kernel ODIN image and confirm it did flash the boot image?
That is the only thing that booted. As soon as I selected the image I got a "MD5 checksum failed" prompt. The "start" button changed to the same message but it let me click it and it loads the boot.img. Does that help at all?

[ROM][OFFICIAL] CyanogenMod 9 (ICS) for SGH-T769

CyanogenMod 9 is a free, community built distribution of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) which greatly extends the capabilities of your phone.
Code:
#include <std_disclaimer.h>
/*
* Your warranty is now void.
*
* I am not responsible for bricked devices, dead SD cards,
* thermonuclear war, or you getting fired because the alarm app failed. Please
* do some research if you have any concerns about features included in this ROM
* before flashing it! YOU are choosing to make these modifications, and if
* you point the finger at me for messing up your device, I will laugh at you.
*/
This phone isn't my daily driver, so I only tested a few things, and only slightly:
Known Bugs:
BLN is wonky. This is a CM9 thing and applies pretty much to all the msm8660 devices that use the cypress-touchkey BLN driver. Unlikely to be fixed
Other things maybe? Discuss in the thread...
How to get it:
Download: http://get.cm/?device=t769 (ChangeLog)
Or download it directly through ROM Manager or CM Updater.
Google Apps:
Make sure to download and install the ICS GApps
http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip
IF YOU ARE COMING FROM ANOTHER ROM, PLEASE MAKE SURE TO DO A FACTORY/DATA RESET BEFORE USING THIS. This isn't up for debate. A reset of the dalvik cache helps too. If you do a dirty flash, please make sure to do a dalvik cache wipe. If you have searched this forum for a problem and haven't found it, please do a nandroid backup, then a full factory/data reset and check to see if you still have the problem. If it still persists AFTER the factory/data reset, then report it here.
Thank You!
CyanogenMod Team (all of you, seriously, you guys are awesome)
SGH-T989 Devs (all of you, cuz I basically stole all your configs)
ShabbyPenguin & PlayfulGod for encouraging me when times looked grim.
UberPinguin and others on #jb-dev-e4gt for helping me get all of this work into CM proper
Oreo, my dog, for licking me whenever I needed it.
Older/Unofficial Versions (don't use if you can help it).
For older/legacy/test/unofficial versions of my work, you can find them (for a while at least) here: My Funhouse. Please take care and all necessary steps to verify MD5 sums before installing any zips.
Since CM9 is not a moving target like CM10, it may be some time before we get a point release. Therefore the occassional CM9 Nightly will have to do.
I'm not creating a Q&A thread for this one. Please behave yourselves and be nice to your neighbors.
That is all

Also, it's good that the repos are up. That means people can build/maintain roms for some of the cm derivatives. I'm actually curious to see what ParanoidAndroid looks like on this device. Been meaning to load up thomas.raines work

Hardkeys illumination
Been wondering what changed from cm-9-20121025-UNOFFICIAL-t769 to cm-9-20121030-NIGHTLY-t769? I did a dirty flash (wiping dalvik only) coming from unofficial to nightly and I notice the hardkeys won't illuminate after screen timeout / unlock. After I wait off the set button light timeout (mine is set to 6s) the keys once again illuminate and this doesn't reoccur until the screen goes out again. Anyone else experiencing this?

Yeah, that's the BLN (button lights notification) bug listed at the top. Incidently, the driver/kernel should be identical from 10/25 to 10/30, which is where that bug lives.

I see, tnx for the clarification as it was my understanding the issue only occurs when the lights are actually used for notifications hence the BLN name. Oddly enough I didn't notice this happening when I was running the unofficial build, must have been a coincidence then I suppose.
CM9 after 11/2 will contain WiFi Random MAC fix
Folks,
The next nightly build (they happen weekly) for CM9 will contain the WiFi Random MAC bug fix. This will
This completes the list of bugs to be fixed for CM9.
The change went in after 11/2, so pick up the nightly that comes out after that. Otherwise I'm also posting a flashable zip file in my funhouse to hold you guys over till a new nightly for CM9 is available. I'm not actually sure when they run

I am using an external SD card for my apps rather than the internal flash. After I applied the kernel zip, my memory change to internal. No big deal I thought, so I changed it to external, and did a reboot. After reboot, the check box is unchecked, but looking at the app manager, it still shows the internal flash first. Thankfully, I did a backup first, so I am restoring now. Is this a know issue? Sorry if it has been asked before but I did not see it in the thread. Thanks again for your work......

This is why swiching mounts is not great. The kernel flash replaces the boot.img.
Your best bet might be to wait till the next CM9 nightly comes out and modify that one.
Nightly build
CM9 downloads seem to go to internal storage but CWM was directed to perform update from external sd (ie microsd card). Unless I'm missing something, it doesn't look like the location can be changed manually.
Can someone please explain what the BLN bug is? I understand that the led back lights do not function 100% correctly, but in what ways do they malfunction?

I've been wondering the same thing, from what I experienced so far it seems that the button lights won't come on after screen lock/timeout. The actual BLN notifications seem fine to me, probably worth mentioning the actual notification light option needs to be enabled otherwise BLN won't work.
Does anyone have issues with mobile data connection dying with CM9? For whatever reason mine randomly quits working almost daily and the only way to recover is a reboot, turning data on/off or airplane mode doesn't fix it... Inconvenient to say the least, WiFi still works fine... Oh and BTW I didn't had this issue with the debloated/deodexed stock GB or ICS.

I've found that CLEAN flashes eliminate this for me on all ROMS. I think multiple dirty flashes like flashing updates over previous versions will eventually mess things up expecially when changes r made to the kernel
-I'm not a Dev, I just flash alot-
-If I've helped you the Thanks button is only 2 clicks away!
@woodzx67: Currently latest official cm9 20121125
@johnb380: Started fresh with a full wipe a few times already, makes no difference in this case as the data connection issue has always been there for me with cm9 in particular. I've only used cm10 briefly, don't recall that happening but then again the SOD issue prevented it from running for too long.

[Q] Phone Randomly Reboots Itself?!

So after doing a wipe to my phone (was becoming slow) my phone randomly restarts itself for no reason as if it just crashes. I am running the latest version of the beanstalk rom. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2091900 I don't have the greatest understanding of flashing, roms, blah blah blah, but managed to get kit kat working for the last year or so, I don't understand why this is happening now, did I choose a bad rom or something? Everything else on the phone works but obviously constant restarts get to be very annoying.
Any help would be appreciated,
thank you!

Try leaving it turned on in recovery mode (CWM). If it still reboots, then you have a hardware issue. If it stays stable, I would blame the ROM and try a different version or a different distro.

Thanks for the reply,
I don't think it is a hardware issue as it never did this when I had Jelly Bean or even the last time I had Kit Kat, never know though! Also, I will try to leave it in recovery and see if it does it but a few questions:
-What is "distro" (does it has to do with the OS of the phone?)
-Is there some ROM you could recommend to me for this phone that is stable.. When I install the beanstalk ROM there are like 10 to choose from, I'm guessing they are all older/newer versions!?
-Finally something I was wondering for the longest time but wasn't sure of is can I go back to say, Jelly Bean? Or is it "irreversible"?
Thanks again, glad there's people out there who can help the noobs like me!

Methinks it is the specific ROM. I call the different types of OM out there distributions (or "distros" - in light of what is commonly used in the Linux world), but there may be a better term. It could be the version of Beanstalk you are using, it could be any version of BeanStalk with your phone. Hard to say.
In light of above, I would try CarbonROM. I tried it out briefly, and haven;t had a problem with it (and have heard no issues form the guy I sold the phone to with it installed).
But if you want to go back to JellyBean, there is still a version of 4.2 kicking around (CM 10.1) in the development threads. You can downgrade, at worst you may have to ODIN back to stock. But try to flash in CWM first. I was quite satisfied with that version. My biggest gripe is that the mobile data quick setting didn't work fully (but the long way around did). There is CM 10.2 as well, but I could never get that one installed on my phone (installer would break). Between the two, I would try 10.1 (and if you cannot find a copy, I can dropbox it to you).

YES!
So, after I left the phone in CWM for 25 minutes or so and it being fine I decided to get Carbon as I seen in your "signature" that you had that ROM on your Infuse, it has been good for 2 hours+, looking good! I guess it was the Beanstalk ROM after all.
Thanks for the downgrading information as well, wasn't sure if you could downgrade or what would happen!
Finally, what is flashing? (I could google it but since your here, could you give me a noob friendly definition!?)
Thanks for all your help

Went to reply about the camera issue and notice it was no longer in the post. Glad you got it sorted.
So flashing, as I understand it, is just another term for installing something via recovery. Not sure of the origin, maybe have something to do with installing to flash memory.

Ah ok, so it's essentially as I thought it was. I thought I was doing something wrong in terms of "flashing" but guess not! Sounds like it should just be called "Installing custom ROM".. !
Yeah, in terms of the camera thing, I'm an idiot and had USB storage turned on *facepalm*, So it wouldn't let me open the camera app!

I am not sure if you are still facing the same issue but if you are facing reboots, then considering doing a fresh install after cleaning your internal storage as well since the remnants of the apps from previous installs have caused me problems. Ever since I started doing a fresh install (Factory reset, wiping the cache, wiping the dalvik cache and even the cache partition along with the wiping of the internal storage), there have been no reboot issues.
