I no there are threads similar to needing help suck in download mode. But I had some different problems. First i tried to use the odin to flash back to stock so i can use a different rom. but when i was trying my phone got unplugged from my computer and i received a picture on my phone with a phone a caution sign and the computer. i finaly got out of that and was able to put it in download mode. took about 30 min to get off that caution sign to the download mode. now from here using the command prompt it can detect my phone with adb devices. i also cant get odin to work. Im sorry that this is so long, but this is the first time this has happened so im reaally in need of help. Also i got the first captivate that came out when it was released for AT&T and I have used the odin on my computer in Dec 2010 so I no it works with my computer and phone

I had the same thing happen for the first time a couple days ago. I had to pull my battery and sim card 3 or 4 times, and restart odin everytime, and it eventually worked. It was like it was stuck. This worked for me, hope it works for you.

PRoblem
I'm experiencing the same problem, the only difference is that i had a bad recovery, and now i can't get ODIN to detect the phone i tried the above suggestion with no avail. I had the drivers installed but now when i put it in downloader mode it just says.. "USB device unkown" so ODIN can't detect my sidekick 4g
whats the adam outler method ? can i have a link to it ?
It's in the development section. The program will load all necessary drivers, and go from there. Now, you are saying that your phone is in DL mode, but the pc is not picking it up... have you unplugged the phone from the PC via usb, and re-plugged it in? ODIN should see it then, as long as it is still in DL mode.

i was doing the heimdall [ adam's way ] and in the middle of it , my phone randomly disconnected so now my phone has a picture of a phone that had a caution side in the middle , and a pc on the other side , trying to imply that it was disconnected . when i plug it in nothing happens , when i turn it on or try to go into download mode , this picture comes up
U can still odin via that way

how ? its stuck like that
been on that situation with the picture allot between my vibrant and sidekick. Odin always fixed it from there for me. Treat it like a DL state, and you should be stock soon. I have had it before where I had to let the phone sit over night, and then try in the morning and it worked fine with that pic

?
but im not understanding how is odin supposed to recognize it if that picture always comes up , even when trying to go into download mode
You are basically in DL mode at that point. Unplug the phone, re-plug and it should pop up in odin, as long as you have the correct drivers.. Have you tried to re-run the heimdall? it will probably go through now

yeah but thats wat i was saying earlier , my phone WONT pop up in Odin
I am assuming you are running windows, re-download the drivers for it. Heimdell grabs it's own drivers, odin does not. Make sure you download the correct set ones for the version you got.
I know it's frustrating....
yep im on windows lol and okay ima try that
Just curious... any update?

never was able to fix it thanks for being supportive . I've decided ima get a samsung galaxy s 2 or iphone 4s as a replacement , so i guess it worked out for the better but ima miss my sk4g
I've tried a few other forums but haven't got any replies, I guess since the Galaxy 5 isn't such a popular device. I figured if there's anyone who can help me they will be here though.
I wanted to put CWM on it so I could get a CM7 port on. Unfortunately it's just about impossible for it to get detected on USB. I've installed Kies (and even the generic USB drivers found in the SDK). In 2 days I only got it to connect once, and then I went and bricked it.
The one time it finally connected I ran Odin and tried loading CWM onto it. It still hadn't finished after half an hour so I figured it ended with an error that was never displayed. So I unplugged it and as expected - brick! I can get into download (upgrade/firmware) mode so I think it can be fixed if I can get CWM on it (and just install the CM7 port I had originally intended to put on).
Problem is I cannot get the darn thing to connect! to my computer I've tried two separate PCs, one running Window 7 x64 and another running XP x32. Is there a a certain process of connecting things? I haven't ran across anyone making mention of one.
Has anyone else experienced USB problems like this with Samsung phones? Would it even be possible to flash CWM on after it's been bricked like this? When I boot (normally) all I get is an image showing a phone and a PC with and exclamation error connecting the two. Please help!
Try to look for stock firmware on the forum.xda-developers.com and flash via ODIN. You need to be able to put the phone into download mode, so maybe get an USB jig. That should do the trick. Odin has to recognize your phone. First of all right click on the ODIN executable and select "Run as administrator" on windows. Plug the phone in the DL mode and wait until it appears as active in Odin. Then flash the ROM and pit file. (Don't use ODIN one click). If ODIN does not recognize your phone try a different USB port or reinstall Kies. The Kies trick was which I used and it was able to recognize my phone.
Thanks, martin0176. I can still manage to get the phone into download mode - it's getting recognized by a PC that's the problem.
Could you tell me more about the pit file? I only have an ops file.
Try a different cable. I was having the same problem on the Samsung Continuum and it turned out that the cable was working for power, but not for data.
I tried going back to stock and this is the screen i get now... can anyone help me? I have tried just about everything...
Thanks

See video on Youtube how to get to download mode and how to odin back to stock:

Try pulling battery
Replace battery
Hold the volume down button while plugging in a usb cable (already attached to computer) into the phone...
See if you can get into download mode
Were you using odin or heimdall to go back to stock?

then try Hemiball if odin is not working. I remember somewhere that drivers are particular to the port you are using. With hemi if you are asked you might not see the driver the first time. click the dropdown and located from there
Samsung usb driver.
for Windows 32bit
for Windows 64bit
Your computer remove all samsung driver and kies, restart completed.
Install samsung usb driver and connecting usb test.
Had exact thing happen to me !!! not bricked!
as the others have said need to try and get it into dl mode! need a GOOD data cable "thats how i got that pretty screen" your data cable caused this issue odin says i see phone then all at once say just 7 seconds into update odin says ooopsie no phone. then when you go to redo poof you get that screen i freaked! turns out it was data cable!
you may need i think its called a "jig" if buttons wont allow you !
once you get that yellow triangle your good to go !
I have had my charge for about a year and a half now and have ran gummycharge and most recently was on Tweek stock V1 for the last 9 months. This morning i decided it was time to upgrade to Tweek stock V3 so i was following the step to install it by first unrooting it and when i did odin failed install of the MD5 file and now my computer whenever i plug the phone in is comes up with a message of USB Device Not Recognized and Odin wont recognize the device when i put it into download mode. Also if i try to power it on it comes up with the screen that has a picture of a phone ! computer and will only sit there .
I have reset my computer multiple times i have tried 3 different cords and both USB ports Does anyone know how to solve this problem???

Hey there guys, this is my first post on this site after looking around for about the last 2 hours. My phone was stuck in a boot loop, (samsung screen) I found instructions on another post on this site of how to use ODIN to repair this. I put my phone into download mode ( the yellow droid shoveling screen) and began the flashing process, everything seemed to be working fine until my dog runs by and pulls the cord out. Now my phone keeps flashing the [phone]..!..[PC] screen with the message Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery in keis & try again. connecting and disconnecting to my PC about every 2 seconds it what appears to be an endless loop.. I can no longer enter download mode. I have tried the Heimdall but it simply reads connected then disconnected 2 seconds later in what seems to be an endless loop. So in heimdall or ODIN by the time i am able to read the device and begin the process it has already disconnected. if anyone could lend any assistance it would be greatly appreciated as im sure i could find a much more attractive paperweight for the price i payed for this phone.
Thanks in advance.
Try restarted your PC that screen your seeing on your phone is download mode. Also try different USB port and cord. Also reinstall the drivers for the phone.PCs do some strange things sometimes usually reinstall the drivers will fix the problem.Good luck.

Thanks for the response, I have tried uninstalling keis and uninstalling the drivers through the device manager. I searched my hard drive and could not find any files related before i installed them again. the phone is still power-cycling itself while showing this screen. connecting and disconnecting from my computer.
Honestly I never use kies I just download the drivers and reinstall them.Use Odin or heimdal to flash back to stock then odin entropy kernel then I'm ready to go.Hold both volumes then plug in these programs should read it.I also use a jig comes in handy. Also my PC acts up with the USB ports I end up having to plug in to the back usbs on the motherboard my front ones are iffy.
