I don't really have a need for this, but this will definitely be useful for those who are weary of the Dos commands and risk. This will help ease some fears.
Great contribution!
I have several friends interested in rooting who are not Android-savvy yet, videos would be a huge help!
Agreed on this. I already have my shift rooted but i know plenty people finding this useful

Thanks. This will be great for myself as well as many others.
Yeah tons will love it I know when I first started rooting my EVO I HAD to have a video just as a comfort zone because I was seeing it done as I was doing it step by step, and thanks to the videos I watched then I just read instructions and leap into rooting now. Even though I don't need the video thanks for taking the time to add this

Well... someone's gotta dissent so I say: No.
In fact, I think the rooting instructions we have now are too detailed and need to be vagued up a little. If you post a video it's just gonna be easier for more people to root and as more people root their Shifts we'll have less and less to lord over them.
Also, on a side note: We should move away from the forums and IRC channels. The really cool and elite of us will communicate via fax.

Reckon i am going to wait on this rooting expedition. From reading all the problems people are having with rooting i dont have the guts to try this cuz if i run into a prob of any sorts and post it on here it may take a bit to get a reply. That is not intended as a slam -just fact. In meantime this dummy will keep reading and hoping for a VERY simple solution in the near future))

1. Rooting the inspire is pretty easy if you know how to read and follow instructions.
2. If you were stuck, there are many people willing to help i.e. ClearD. Post in the right section tho lol.
3. You didn't need to make a thread about this nor does it belong in this section

You are very wise. If it seems too much, then it probably is. Keep reading though. And I am surprised by your comment about replies. This is one of the BEST sites for ROM development. The members are extremely responsive to questions.
if you can read and like pictures/videos/youtube than rooting will be a breeze. just follow the steps and pause the video and proceed. it may take a little longer than expected but a working phone is better than a coaster.
Rooting is so worth it. If you're ready to root. If you're not then don't. No need to rush into it. The more days that pass, the more new ROMs and other cool stuff comes out so it will all be here when you're ready and already tested for you.
i thought it was easy enough, i used that little GUI software that walks you through the whole thing. as long as you can follow directions its not hard.
It is not hard, 99% of the issues come from people not following directions.
It is much easier than it seems
It's not that hard. Watch the youtube video that pretty much walks you through attn1 hack kit.

How is it going everyone.. I was curious if anyone could tell me if bubby’s one click root would still work for my phone if I haven’t updated my phone to gingerbread yet? And hypothetically speaking, what I mean is that if I decline the gingerbread up date, or I just haven’t got the update yet... when I’m down grading my rom while using bubby’s program is there any chance that when it ask to install the update that the gingerbread update could mess with it or be installed instead? And sorry if this is a dumb question but I’ve looked in other places and didn’t find my answer so I just wanted to be sure.. So thank you for any help in advanced.
and i read on the thread that its been discontinued, but it should still work if my phone is still froyo right?
It probably would still work, but you really should use ATTN1's hack kit. It's being actively developed and has real-time support via the #liberatedAria IRC chat channel.

I used bubby's method and it worked well for me. Got it first try no problems. If that's what you feel comfortable using then go for it. But I gotta say I rooted one of my friends inspire with att1 hack kit and it was easy as well. As long ad you can follow instructions you'll be alright.

I used bubby's on my phone back when it was running froyo. Had no problems at all. Alot of my friends have also used the hack kit. Either way as long as you can read instructions, and really read them before doing it, you should be fine. If you piss your pants because your nervous while doing it...its ok I almost did. Hahaha. Good luck!
Also please please read each methods thread all the way through to see any problems anyone else may have had so you know how to handle them if they come up.

SO... I totally started this venture yesterday. I tend to jump right into things. I love my MT4GS and I love "jailbreaking" iPhone and Unlocking other phones so ROOTING was obviously the next step. THIS CRAP IS HARD! I can't believe how much goes into it... Here is where I am so far:
I successfully managed to screw everything yesterday and was able to fix it thanks to some TIPS from fellow XDA Members. Thank You.
AS OF this morning: I have updated REVOLUTIONARY to Modaco 4.0.0.9. However, I used a temp root when I did this and am having to do this everytime in order to gain root access. I need a reliable permanent root. Is this a good idea or should I stick with temp root and just perform this everytime?
I have been thinking about flashing different ROMs such a cyanogen or senseless but I am leary. I need an app or program that will allow me to BACKUP my Stock ROM. ROM Manager is not compatible with the MT4GS (as you know) SO what do I use?

Everyone starts out somewhere. Flashing the recovery image via Fastboot is actually safer than any other method other than ROM Manager (which we obviously can't use right now), but only if you have the right recovery image.

what method did you use to root it?
you should have just downloaded the oneclickroot, unzipped it, plug your phone in, double kick the bat file, let it run and follow the onscreen directions.
takes about 5 minutes and works fine.

14 hours to check debugging, install a usb driver file, and then run one click....
Well I guess if you are a noob then technically it could happen. My wife is a noob and she would never know how to figure it out.
Just think if this process included Android SDK and ABD, then you would be hosed. Always check the Development Tab first because they usually follow up with a youtube video for instructions. If you still have issues then ping us in the general section. Some people like to help while others will flame you, throw rotten tomatoes, point and laugh.
Any who, congrats on the root and welcome to the very disfunctional XDA family!

Those of us who have spent the time learning how to root an Android phone and install a kernel or rom have paid our dues. Everyone should.

How much more solid does it need to be? If you had read the thread on how to root the phone, the steps are laid out clear as day. There isn't a how to on how to unlock the bootloader because it can't be unlocked yet.
Are you ready to root your phone!?
I am writing this out do to the amount of people who seem to start doing things on their phones without understanding what it is they're really doing.
Now you might say "I know I know exad, I root many phoen, I want 2 show peopel how smrt I am! I custumize everything and maek it lewk cool!" But there's really quite a bit of risk associate with the rooting process and even afterwards! Here, I will explain some of the common terms and risks associated with rooting, it will be like an index of knowledge I've accumulated being here on XDA.
So first off, what is root? Why is it dangerous?
I will tell you very directly, if you do not know exactly what root is, and/or how to manage access, you are not at all ready to root.
Root is a term to mean Administrative Access. Meaning you have full control over the software of your phone and it's system files. When you are given root access, you can alter any system files. This can obviously be damaging. Perhaps you trust yourself not to do anything crazy or destructive, which I think is the case for most people but often, root access is given to third party apps! So what can an app with root access do with your phone technically?.. Well, ANYTHING IT'S DEVELOPER wants. Overclock your CPU, create a backdoor to your phone, pull/steal personal information. The sky's the limit.
*This is a work in reprogress* More content will continue to be added until I feel this is complete."

I wrote up something like this a while ago but decided not to post it because noobs never read these things. I may just throw it up in General.
Great work I will add it to my FAQ
Thanks for all your help, unfortunately I am one of those noobs who had been studying the root process for just about a week and thought I had a firm grasp on the concept. Fortunately for me I haven't done anything yet to brick my phone this is definitely a humbling experience haha -heads back to the forums to learn some more- :good:
Hmm not sure why this doesn't have more recognition... It took me months to figure this crap out. With a little experience, this guide could turn a total noob into a competant android rooter in a week or so. I remember my first posts on XDA *shudders*. So.... consider this a BUMPITY-BUMP
EDIT: That said, I know the first place many people go is general (that's what I did) so maybe this would get more views by the people who actually need it in general.
I would have loved this when I was rooting
Thanks for this. I've already rooted my phone and had to find much of this information on my own. It's nice to see it all in one place.
