[Solved]Home launcher crashing, can't do anything! - Captivate General

I have a problem. The launcher I'm using is crashing after the latest update. I mean, I can't do a single thing about it. Homebutton->force close repeat. Is there any way I can get into settings without a homelauncher? I need to force it to stop being default, uninstall it, something. Any ideas? I have quick settings pinned to long press search, but I can't find a link to the full settings app there either. My phone is completely useless right now. I can make emergency calls from the lockscreen, but that is it.

Can you get to the market?
I had a similar problem the other day and luckily, a notification popped up indicating that I had updates for aps available. I got the to the market from the notification pull down menu. Once there, I DL'd "Launcher Pro" and "Home Switcher". Once they were both installed, I launched "Home Switcher" from the pull down notification menu and switched my default launcher to "Launcher Pro".
If you can get to the market, this might work for you too.

You can use adb to install another launcher or create a cwm zip file to flash in recovery which will copy the apk. Also, as the other poster stated, getting into the market you could dl another. Not sure if using the market website on your computer would work as I haven't used the feature but it may.

Yeah, what those guys said, try going to http://market.android.com on your computer and see if you can push some other launcher to your phone. If you can't and everything else fails, and you want to try repairing your rom without losing your data, you can download the cwm flashable zip of the rom you're running and edit the update script in META-INF to not format the data partition, then reflash the rom. Pretty sure that'd work on any 2.2 based rom, not sure how well that'd go over on CM7.

Thanks for the responses. The web market would probably have worked as well. I ended up remembering I had swipe pad enabled, and just changed a box to settings. Was just coming to update the post. Wish android had a feature that would, if an app launched and closed x number of times, it would stop launching it/clear it from defaults.

I'm An Idiot...

So basically, about a month ago, I was following one of the tutorials here on how to change the theme on my X10. I wasn't really paying attention to the instructions, but ended up making a theme. When I put it on my phone, nothing happened but I didn't really care, and just left it at that. Just now, I uninstalled my adw.launcher, and all I can see is the status bar at the top (I can slide it down and access notifications from there), and the rest of the screen is black.
I can't access the market to download it again, or go into settings to enable USB debugging, or open a file manager to install adw from SD. Does anyone know of some way I could fix this (preferable without re-flashing my phone)?
Look forward to any replies..
EDIT: Just emailed myself with a link to download adw.launcher, and managed to reinstall it, so everything's fine now.
Either way, is there some way to fix that black screen?
I think a factory reset is your only option. But, if it works ok with ADW launcher, I'd stick with that.
It sounds like u messed up the launcher apk. U probably would have been able to push a working backup using adb.
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
Use adb to push Launcher.apk back to your phone if you have a backup. Otherwise, use adb to push ADW or Helix or whatever launcher you want really to /data/app and when it boots up it should give you the option to select a launcher.

[Q] Launchers.

First off I need to state that All of my experience with modding android devices is exclusively with the Samsung Vibrant.
A buddy at work just got the Motorola Droid-X for verizon.
I helped him out through the menus and settings and the standards of Android OS and the apps and yada yada yada.............
His phone is Stock and has never been rooted or modded in any way.
In seeing that My phone looked different I told him about home launcher replacements and that I was using Launcher pro. He wanted this for his phone as well and I installed it.
After I installed it I wanted to show him how to revert back to his original stock launcher (as i do on my vibrant) but to my surprise in pressing the home button it did not show me the choose launcher popup as my vibrant does.
I immediately went into settings/applications/manage applications/launcherPro to clear defaults and again to my surprise the clear defaults button was grayed out.
He is now having reboot issues he did not have before. He states he notices this when launcher pro rotates the home screen.
My questions for this forum is, (sorry it took so long)
How do I get his phone back to the stock launcher?
If I un-install Launcher pro,
Will I un-install the what seems to be the only home launcher and Brick his phone?
If I install a different launcher(Zeam) Will it possible give me the Choose default popup again?
I honestly did not think this simple install would cause this kind of issues.
I hate to think he needs to do a factory reset.
Please help me??

Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> All -> Home -> Clear Defaults, not hard...
Go to the market and search for home switcher. That should do the trick.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
You can also downlaod HomeSmack which is like Home Switcher but Homesmack is way better for Motorola phones. I downloaded it on my Droid X and it works best if you enable MotoHomeHelper on the app.
P.S. If you are getting an install error take out your SD card and try to download the app again. Then when the app is done downloading you can put your SD card back in your phone.
You can try any of the home switching apps that people have suggested... Or if you just uninstall the Launcher Pro app, his original launcher will return. I have done this several times on my X.
all you have to do is uninstall laucher pro
Launchers
Thank you all for your replies.
When I went to him to to preform the fix's He had already turned off rotate within launcher pro and it stopped his reboot issues, so now he is happy.
Thanks again to all.

[Q] oops, trashed out ADW

I have an Optimus M from MetroPCS and I installed ADW. While playing around with the settings, I accidentally deleted the last home screen, so now I'm stuck in a Force Close loop for ADW. I can't get to the home screens (I guess there aren't any), I can't get to the ADW settings, etc. The only thing I can get to is the notification bar. So I can't bring up any programs or anything, including the terminal. USB debugging isn't enabled and I can't get to that setting to enable it, so I don't think I can use adb to help.
Is there anything I can do to get out of this loop? I used to know how to hack my way around a T-Mobile G1 (installing custom recoveries, roms, etc.), but with this Optimus M I don't even know how to flash the stock firmware back on it. I'm not sure how to do a factory reset, but I'm not even sure if that would work anyway, since I may have deleted the custom launcher that came with the phone and I don't know if it has the stock launcher (or any way to enable the stock launcher if the LG launcher isn't there).
Can I get to a terminal from the recovery console and delete the ADW settings file or something to get it to go back to default settings? I even have a good backup of good ADW settings I made before I made the changes but I can't get to a point where I can restore those settings.
Any ideas?

Keep pressing home key and check if you have market running. If so, go there and install ADW launcher again or launcherPro
Thanks for the suggestion. In my case, I couldn't get the little "running apps" view to show up while holding down the home button either, but I was able to get to the market a different way. I don't know how many other people will run into this exact issue, but I've fixed it, and here's what I did for posterity's sake.
1. Get out of the force close loop. The way I did this was to pull down the notifications bar and I happened to have Cardio Trainer running in there so I could get to some program OTHER than the launcher itself so the home screen wasn't attempting to load. If you don't have anything running in your notification bar, you might send yourself a text message so you can get in the messaging app through the notification bar.
2. Press and hold the search button, this brings up voice search. Say something (anything), which will bring up a Google search.
3. Now search for ADW Launcher. What you're looking for is a site that will offer you a "download" link, which will load the Market.
4. Uninstall the launcher and immediately reinstall it. Fortunately, ADW wipes out its settings when you do this, and all should be back to normal.
5. Don't delete your last home screen again. In my defense, I clicked the little X to delete my last home screen just to see what it would say, and figured it was safe since it always asked me to confirm before deleting the other home screens. Nope, it just killed ADW forever instead. Lesson learned.

[Q] My screen has blacked out. What can I do?

OK, so tonight I decided to install the Atrix 2 Blaze mod. It installed without any issues.
After installing and verifying that everything worked, I then decided to use Titanium Backup to batch restore my apps. This appeared to work, and at the end of the process it told me to reboot. So I did.
Once it booted back up, I was greeted with the lock screen, as you'd expect -- but when I unlocked the phone, all I saw was a black screen and the notification bar on top. No wallpaper, no icons, no widgets, nothing. I could open the task drawer, I could make the soft keyboard appear, I could bring up the "open apps" window... but I can't actually do anything because the screen is freaking black.
But because the notification bar works, I can tell there are things going on. I see my phone checking for email. I see my phone battery decreasing. I see notifications when my google+ or twitter apps detect people are replying to threads I've been on. In other words, the phone appears to be working in every way except that there's nothing on the screen for me to interact with.
Has anyone seen this before? Is there a way to fix it? I hope?
Your best bet is probably just to flash the 2.3.5 Stock FXZ and start from scratch.
Sent from my MB865 using XDA
try re-flashing ?
looks like you loose your home launcher ..
I had the EXACT same problem, everything below the notifications bar was blacked out, i could bring up recent apps, but i couldn't even bring up the emergency dial pad at the unlock screen. Only difference is mine happened when i froze Go Launcher using Titanium Backup. I could tell it was still trying to run Go Launcher coz i could auto-rotate the screen.Sadly, the only option i had was to reset the phone and loose everything. I couldnt even backup my files coz i set USB mode to charge only so it never popped up on PC.
I reckon you restored an app that has a missing component/data and so it crashes at startup, maybe a home launcher, locker etc. Try making a backup then resetting your phone
Same problem here Ill try the fxy method,
any of you had solve the problem?

Android Lollipop 5.0 Stock Factory Image: "Couldn't add widget" on recent apps list

Android Lollipop 5.0 Stock Factory Image: "Couldn't add widget" on recent apps list
I just installed the Android Lollipop 5.0 factory image on my Nexus 5, thenrooted, and I'm getting a gray box on top of my recent apps list, I guess where the search bar should be, with the error message "Couldn't add widget". Reboot didn't fix the issue. Anyone have any ideas?
You've deleted Google search app
Sent from my Android 5.0 Nexus 5
That's not it because the search bar is there on my home screen. I should also mention that I rooted...
Weird, mine shows and I'm rooted and have removed a load of system apps. Have you removed system apps? If so which?
Sent from my Android 5.0 Nexus 5
I removed no system apps. But I logged in as guest and the search bar is correctly there. So it must be something corrupted for my user..
I have this too. I didn't remove anything, but I am rooted. Dunno if it had that before rooting.
Edit: This worked fine on the last preview and I don't think I did anything different this time. I did a new install (full wipe), rooted (Cf auto root) and restored stuff with Titanium (no system stuff other than text messages). I DID choose to restore my setting and such from Google this time when I logged in the first time. I think that might be the only difference.
Edit #500: Ok, it is working now. Not sure what I did exactly, but this is everything I tried in order more or less:
Cleared data for Google Search
Set Home back to Google Now Launcher (was Nova)
Reboot into safe mode (press power button, long press on "Power off")
Check if it works - it does
Reboot again
Done (set Home back to Nova, still works).
Maybe safe mode fixed it.

I had the same exact issue you described, clean flash and then root, not sure if it was that way before root. I followed the exact same steps you did and it fixed it for me.
Good. I would suggest to anyone else to just try safe mode. Maybe that is all you need to do.

Safe mode fixed it for me. I don't think some of my widgets carried over correctly from the upgrade from 4.4.4 so I was getting that weird error also on the recent apps screen. Safe mode will wipe them out so you can start over again.
Yeah, clearing google search data fixed it for me, but I reset my home screen and all my widgets are unconfigured, if safe mode works like most people have reported it to do, use that instead.
Clearing Google Search data didn't work for me. But booting into safe mode, then booting normally worked for me.
Guys, I have this problem and no of the 2 solution worked for me... Any help, please?
custom launchers
Looks like this is happening when using a different laucher than the default one. The same happens to me with solo launcher. As the new launcher takes care of the widgets it causes the search bar not to be loaded. Hopefully the devs for the custom launchers find a solution soon.
Solved with full wipe...
Fixed with safe mode
A safe mode reboot fixed it for me on a fully stock nexus 6 running 5.0 but, except for the evernote shortcut, every widget on every screen was removed (after the safe mode reboot). The fix remains after adding back all the widgets and after a normal reboot. After another safe mode reboot (just to check), all the widgets were gone again (had to add them back again but the fix remained.)
Safe mode fixed it for me.
Thanks!

Safe mode ftw. Thank you.
I HAVE deleted google search app because its not needed and normally that is where the search bar would be... Any way to get rid of this "Couldnt add widget" message?

Work perfectly! Thanks!
I got this same message after a clean 5.0.1 factory install. No root, recover, or 3rd party launcher, just whatever Google thought to backup to my account. I actually enjoy Google's Now Launcher, I left it as is
After a Safe Mode reboot, it worked fine
