[Q] Launchers. - Droid X Themes and Apps

First off I need to state that All of my experience with modding android devices is exclusively with the Samsung Vibrant.
A buddy at work just got the Motorola Droid-X for verizon.
I helped him out through the menus and settings and the standards of Android OS and the apps and yada yada yada.............
His phone is Stock and has never been rooted or modded in any way.
In seeing that My phone looked different I told him about home launcher replacements and that I was using Launcher pro. He wanted this for his phone as well and I installed it.
After I installed it I wanted to show him how to revert back to his original stock launcher (as i do on my vibrant) but to my surprise in pressing the home button it did not show me the choose launcher popup as my vibrant does.
I immediately went into settings/applications/manage applications/launcherPro to clear defaults and again to my surprise the clear defaults button was grayed out.
He is now having reboot issues he did not have before. He states he notices this when launcher pro rotates the home screen.
My questions for this forum is, (sorry it took so long)
How do I get his phone back to the stock launcher?
If I un-install Launcher pro,
Will I un-install the what seems to be the only home launcher and Brick his phone?
If I install a different launcher(Zeam) Will it possible give me the Choose default popup again?
I honestly did not think this simple install would cause this kind of issues.
I hate to think he needs to do a factory reset.
Please help me??

Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> All -> Home -> Clear Defaults, not hard...

Go to the market and search for home switcher. That should do the trick.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

You can also downlaod HomeSmack which is like Home Switcher but Homesmack is way better for Motorola phones. I downloaded it on my Droid X and it works best if you enable MotoHomeHelper on the app.
P.S. If you are getting an install error take out your SD card and try to download the app again. Then when the app is done downloading you can put your SD card back in your phone.

You can try any of the home switching apps that people have suggested... Or if you just uninstall the Launcher Pro app, his original launcher will return. I have done this several times on my X.

all you have to do is uninstall laucher pro

Launchers
Thank you all for your replies.
When I went to him to to preform the fix's He had already turned off rotate within launcher pro and it stopped his reboot issues, so now he is happy.
Thanks again to all.

[Q] oops, trashed out ADW

I have an Optimus M from MetroPCS and I installed ADW. While playing around with the settings, I accidentally deleted the last home screen, so now I'm stuck in a Force Close loop for ADW. I can't get to the home screens (I guess there aren't any), I can't get to the ADW settings, etc. The only thing I can get to is the notification bar. So I can't bring up any programs or anything, including the terminal. USB debugging isn't enabled and I can't get to that setting to enable it, so I don't think I can use adb to help.
Is there anything I can do to get out of this loop? I used to know how to hack my way around a T-Mobile G1 (installing custom recoveries, roms, etc.), but with this Optimus M I don't even know how to flash the stock firmware back on it. I'm not sure how to do a factory reset, but I'm not even sure if that would work anyway, since I may have deleted the custom launcher that came with the phone and I don't know if it has the stock launcher (or any way to enable the stock launcher if the LG launcher isn't there).
Can I get to a terminal from the recovery console and delete the ADW settings file or something to get it to go back to default settings? I even have a good backup of good ADW settings I made before I made the changes but I can't get to a point where I can restore those settings.
Any ideas?

Keep pressing home key and check if you have market running. If so, go there and install ADW launcher again or launcherPro
Thanks for the suggestion. In my case, I couldn't get the little "running apps" view to show up while holding down the home button either, but I was able to get to the market a different way. I don't know how many other people will run into this exact issue, but I've fixed it, and here's what I did for posterity's sake.
1. Get out of the force close loop. The way I did this was to pull down the notifications bar and I happened to have Cardio Trainer running in there so I could get to some program OTHER than the launcher itself so the home screen wasn't attempting to load. If you don't have anything running in your notification bar, you might send yourself a text message so you can get in the messaging app through the notification bar.
2. Press and hold the search button, this brings up voice search. Say something (anything), which will bring up a Google search.
3. Now search for ADW Launcher. What you're looking for is a site that will offer you a "download" link, which will load the Market.
4. Uninstall the launcher and immediately reinstall it. Fortunately, ADW wipes out its settings when you do this, and all should be back to normal.
5. Don't delete your last home screen again. In my defense, I clicked the little X to delete my last home screen just to see what it would say, and figured it was safe since it always asked me to confirm before deleting the other home screens. Nope, it just killed ADW forever instead. Lesson learned.

LauncherPro not staying in memory

Hi all, just got a TB and rooted it yesterday. It was one of the first things I did when I got my phone, so I can't say that this wasn't an issue beforehand, but it seems like LauncherPro isn't staying in memory. Every now and then, when I press the home screen, it will ask me whether to use HTC Sense or LauncherPro. This will keep occuring at random, even after I've checked to use LauncherPro by default. Is anyone else having this problem? Know a quick fix?
Nobody else experiencing this?
there's an option in launcherpro's general settings 'keep in memory'. have you tried that yet? are you using some sort of app-killer (like advanced task manager or ES)? is launcherpro ignored in that?
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
Ah, sorry, should have clarified. Yes, I have the keep in memory already checked and I am not using any sort of app killer unless there is a stock app killer that I don't know about.
ok, then. in the phone's settings menu, go to applications/manage applications, find launcherpro. is it selected to launch by default?
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
No defaults set, which is why I assume the settings aren't sticking. Should I just force stop, clear data, uninstall, reinstall to see if that works? Or do you know a nifty way to set it to the default launcher.

you could do what I did, and use Titanium to remove HTC Sense from the phone. No point in having it if your going to use a different launcher.
Haven't checked yet, but is removing HTC Sense one of the safe removable apps? Were you having the same issues as I was or did you just remove it because you didn't use it?
i don't recommend uninstalling sense. i know, launcherpro is good and all, but it's still a third party software, and if something goes wrong, you're left with no launcher, and that kind of sucks... and no, i don't know any way to make it default (other that choosing from the list when it pops up). but reinstalling might help!

i am running das bamf and removed every bit of sense I could get my hands on immediatly as I like what they did with the rom but hate sense. I also installed launcher pro right away and deleted sense.
I have never had launcher pro end up at a point where I couldn't use it anyone. I did this for 2 months on my evo 4g, and will continue to do so.
Just stuck to the tried and true method of clearing data. LauncherPro seems to be sticking now. Thanks for all the replies!
Ah, spoke a little bit too soon. Doesn't seem to be sticking any longer. When I rooted, the process went very smoothly and all root apps that I have run with no problems.
I'm just wondering if there's any way that rooting may have affected LP since no other users seem to be having this problem.
Bumping this.

I have had this very same problem since day 1 with my T-Bolt, and it's driving me crazy. I have not rooted yet, so rooting has nothing to do with it... just so you know...
Like with your's, I get that nasty launcher selection popup randomly; and if I exit from any streaming app or music app, it pops up EVERYsingle time the HOME key is pressed.
It also happens with ADW in exactly the same way as LauncherPro, so I would bet it happens with any launcher that is not Sense.
What have I done to fix it?
1. I have uninstalled / re-installed LauncherPro (and ADW), with no luck.
2. Just in case it was a conflict of Google restoring what I had on my Incredible to my T-Bolt, I uninstalled every uninstallable app I could, and then waited over night for Google to do it's backup ( to create a blank backup), and then did a hard reset the next morning, with no luck.
3. In Settings>Privacy, I unchecked the "Back Up My Settings" box and discovered that a window pops up that says, "Are you sure you want to stop backing up your settings and application data AND ERASE ALL COPIES ON GOOGLE SERVERS?" When I saw that, I saw no need to do the overnight thing and did this repeatedly with hard resets - all this WITH NO LUCK.
4. As a last resort, I took my T-Bolt back to Best Buy (thinking that maybe something went wrong in the provisioning process during activation), and they reactivated my T-Bolt with a new SIM card. Once again, NO LUCK.
I don't know what the heck is going on with it. Maybe it's a rogue app that's conflicting with the T-Bolt. I don't know. What I do know is that there is no problem if I'm using Sense, but I don't like Sense and refuse to use it, so I'm stuck with that darned popup.
I thought that rooting and using a different ROM altogether would get rid of the problem. Have you tried flashing a different ROM?
We have got to find out what's causing this, or at least a good workaround.

Thanks for the reply. Puts my mind at ease knowing that I'm not the only one with the issue and also helps to know that you're experiencing this on an unrooted phone. I have not tried flashing any custom ROMs yet, so perhaps the people who have flashed a ROM can report back on whether LP is acting up on their phones.
I hope it's as simple as LP needing to be updated for TB.
Had this same problem myself... Download an app called HomeSmack from the market. It is free and allows you to switch between Sense and launcherpro easily. Have not had the issue since. Also I can easily switch back to my sense home screen and vice verse without a set-up every time.
Hope this helps

Yeah, I forgot to mention that neat little app - Homesmack. I like it. It's the only way I was able to actually get to LauncherPro from Sense. Without it, for me LauncherPro was simply a *download* that I could not access.
However, it did nothing to keep LauncherPro in memory. It does allow you to clear data from Sense and actually kill it momentarily; but once you get back into LauncherPro (or ADW), the problem simply repeats itself on my T-Bolt.

If I have time, I'm gonna root my T-Bolt this weekend. And then I will immediately flash a ROM - ANY ROM - to see if this works.
From what I'm gathering with regards to the T-Bolt... there are lots of bugs with this phone; however, not all T-Bolts share the same problems, and some are way more common than others. My T-Bolt is, for the most part, flawless; except for the launcher staying in memory. My wife has the headphone jack problem with hers... not everyone is experiencing that, but there are a batch of T-Bolts with faulty headphone jacks. Guess that's what we get for being early adopters. What the heck though, every other 4G phone that comes out will have flaws too. If people are expecting these phones to be fully *worked out*, they should wait and upgrade to 4G next year.
In the meantime, I've found that hitting the *back* key instead of the *home* key bypasses the launcher pop-up selector altogether. It can't be relied on completely because there are some apps you can't get out of without hitting the HOME key.
btw, my coworker has a tb and has this issue of the launcher pro constantly asking to be the default launcher. looks like if you hold the home button to switch between tasks, it clears the default launcher setting. try not using the hold home to multitask function to see if that stops this from happening.
I can verify this behaviour, and it 100% reproducible. It 'forgets' the default launcher with 2 actions:
- Pull down the status bar notification.
- Long press home to switch apps.
It doesn't happen otherwise. I use Wave Launcher, and it doesn't affect the default launcher.
This only started happening this weekend. I have to go through the apps I added recently.
I'm not rooted.
Using Zeam launcher.

[Q] ADW EX Help

I got ADW EX since it is 10 cents today and I don't know how to make it my default. My Xoom is not rooted and running 3.2.1.
After I install ADW EX and press the home key nothing happens. The screen just gets dark, going to neither launchers. I go into Applications and the option to clear defaults for both stock/ADW EX are not highlighted/doable. They are blacked out. I can only clear data on both of them. I installed Launcher Switcher and it says no default set but it won't let me pick either launcher. I then installed Home Switcher and it again said no defaults set but this time I was able to pick ADW EX as my default. BUT, even after doing that, after I press the home key it goes nowhere again, nothing happens, dark screen.
I restarted my Xoom and after boot animation the screen was black, I could only see the bottom bar where the back/home/windows and time are. Neither stock or ADW EX was launched after I restarted. I had to go into Settings, Applications and open ADW EX to get it to come up. I then uninstalled ADW EX and pressed the home key which brought up the stock launcher. Hunky dory. I reinstalled and the same problems happened.
I searched the forums and looked online but I don't know what to do. I can manually go back and forth between launchers but that's not what I want... I just want ADW EX to work when I press the home key! I suck lol. Could someone please help me? Thank you in advance!
There may be two different issues in play, but if you are stuck with the stock launcher as default, go into settings, apps, choose the stock launcher and on the bottom of the page you should be able to uncheck default. Then if you have ADW installed, you should get the dialog box to choose the default launcher. If the screen dims and does nothing, just rotate your Xoom (i.e. landscape to portrait) and the dialog box should popup.
It could be related to another App you have installed. I did a Google search and some one else had a similar problem on an Incredible 2 where they couldn't set a launcher and it turned out to be a keyboard app causing issues.
I have a similar problem too. After installing the adw launcher I can no longer open links or office documents, or execute any other commands that require a selection via a dialog box. I tried uninstalling the launcher app, but that only fixes the home button not the other things. I already tried resetting all the defaults using the several apps in the market, but that doesn't worked. any help would be greatly appreciated.
whenever I click on an internet link or try to open an office document that I downloaded the screen dims down as it would whenever a dialog box appears except no box shows up.

Ouch! If only I had read this yesterday before I wiped my Xoom and tried to reload all my launchers, only to find the problem still existed. :-(

Geesh.

N00b question on launcher app defaults

VERY sorry if there is already a thread on this, but a quick search couldn't find anything.
I'm relatively new to the android scene and this forum (bought a nexus s a few weeks ago) so take it easy on me i'm still learning. anyway I'm having a problem with ADW launcher. I've been playing around with it for the past few days, and i accidentally set the stock launcher as default. I have no clue how to get it back. I tried uninstalling the app and re installing it again, but the dialogue box that first came up (asking to set a default launcher) still didn't show up. I don't know if it matters, but its an i9020T running stock 4.0.3 ICS. I'm not sure what else to try, so thanks in advance for any help.
EDIT: i may as well ask another question while i've got this thread going. I updated to stock ICS not long after i got the phone and ever since the android market won't download anything over 3g (works fine over wifi, and i know the 3g connection is fine because browsing and other data works perfectly.)
thanks, mrjimyjohn
Open the menu and go to Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications and then find your current default launcher. Select it and find the "clear defaults" button (you may have to scroll down). Click that and then press the Home button. It'll ask you again what you want as your default launcher.
As for your market problem I can't help you, but I'm a little confused. You say you updated your Nexus S to have stock ICS, but that's what it comes with. It may be that you've installed a bad version, as there are lots of the out there currently.
I'd recommend asking about it in the thread where you got the update from.
thanks for the help, Archer, it worked perfectly.
My nexus s came with 2.3.4 gingerbread, and I got the stock OTA update from THIS THREAD and everything works fine other than the market. I'll ask about it in that thread too, but thanks for your help.

Can't get widgets on home screen

Hi All, Help needed. My Sensation XE phone updated to ICS a few days ago, stock unrooted. Since the update I can't add any widgets to the home screen, and have difficulty adding Apps too .
If I long hold on home screen space, I can choose an App or widget but once selected I get thrown out to the centre home screen without success (even if I was on a different screen).
I am able to pin an App from the App drawer route, but can't get widgets from any method. Existing widgets work fine, but can't add any new ones, not even HTC ones.
I raised a support query with HTC, they said it is a "software glitch", and to do a factory reset. I really don't want to do this, I don't want to go through setting everything up again. And as I'm NOT rooted will lose App and game data. As I have a stock unrooted phone I'm not even convinced a reset will solve the problem.
Has anyone got any ideas on how to solve this or a work around?
1) Root the phone. It's super easy and you'll end up with the ability to back up all your stuff.
but if that's not for you...
2) Get a different launcher. (ADW is nice. Go Launcher is popular. Both are available on the market. Both are free.)
You'd have to reset up your home screens, but all of your data and system settings could be uneffected. And I'd bet that your problem goes away with a new launcher.
I may be forced to root, but not ready to go down that road yet. I like the simplicity and security of stock. And if things are going wrong with a stock phone I don't really want to venture into more complexity.
I may try another launcher but again I actually like Sense UI.
I thought there could be a service or program I could restart that would solve my problem. I get the feeling HTC customer service just get everyone to reset at the first sign of trouble.

There's a very good reason that you get that feeling
Factory resetting will fix 99% of software issues that the average dolt causes by doing something goofy. So they recommend it as the go to solution.
Try this.
Go to the settings. Select apps, then "All" instead of 'downloaded'. Find the launcher and clear the settings. If it works it'll clear off all your home screens. But it should reset the application so it'll work like the first day. You won't lose data or anything, just the placement of your icons. I don't know if it'll work without root though.
As for rooting, you can root the phone and keep the stock ROM. You don't have to change anything or install different ROM's. You'd just have the ability to tweak more of the stock ROM if you needed to, and the ability to fix more problems that you're locked out of now .
And there's a chance that wiping the dalvik and cache once you're rooted would fix the problem you're having with the launcher if the 'clear settings' option doesn't work.
hey, 1. confirm that your ROM originally includes those widgets...
2. go to setting-apps-all-htc sense-clean cache-reboot...
Thanks for your help guys. I found the problem which was a troublesome app that worked fine under gingerbread, but not happy with ics. Quickest. Removed it and problem went away.
Issue resolved - uninstalling certain applications was the solution!

While I tried almost all the solutions mentioned above, this solution worked for me. I removed all the previously installed applications, that were installed before moving over ICS. Somehow, I couldn't narrow down to the exact application that was causing the problem.
Uninstalling these applications resolved the issue and now I am able to add widgets to HomeScreen.
Thank you very much all of you for your help and suggestions.
