[Q] SD Card Damaged? - Desire Accessories

Got a new MicroSD card today, chucked it in and tried to partition it using Amon 2.0, it did ext2 fine then crashed on remaining space as fat32. had to reboot phone and now SD card isnt working correctly. if i put it in sd reader in pc it shows up as a 16mb partition FAT and if i try to partition it in AMON it just says its done after 1 second. If i try to repair using AMON it says use FS REPAIR in ADB. Im a noob but i ran ADB from cmd line, it detects my desire when i run adb devices but if i run FS REPAIR as recommended it says no ext partition found???? Tried booting a GParted livecd and running Gparted yet this doesnt show my device/sd card either?? How can i repair this card?????

Try putting it in a camera and formatting it there.
That fixed my SD card issues.

I had the same problems but didn't have any card readers or cameras to try out. Instead I found this: androidandme.com/2009/08/news/how-to-manually-partition-your-sd-card-for-android-apps2sd/ worked fine. (sorry about the link)
It can be a little difficult and tedious but was the only method which worked for me.

please help sd card problems

ok here is my situation i am running a rooted g1 with amon ra 1.5 recovery and cyanogen 4.2.12.2, i used the partitioning function from the recovery options to format my sd card , now that i have the fat32 , ext3, and swap partition i was able to move my cache and apps to the sd and everything is working great, the problem i am now having is i cannot access the fat32 partition , the mount/unmount option is faded i can see how much space is on it but i cannot put any of my files back on the card it also doesnt give me the option to mount the sd card anymore when i plug it into my computers i have tried it on my mac, windows xp laptop and my asus eee linux laptop
any help would be great thanks
You have probably corrupted the partition table somehow.
If you don't have anything precious on the card, try to wipe it and start over.
But since i know life i'm almost sure you have files there that you wish not to lose.
Tell me, did you format all the partition after creating them?
Did you unmount/re-mount the partitions after creating/formating and BEFORE you copied any files to them?
If the answer to any of the above question is "no", you've probably screwed up.

No I partitioned the card using amon ra recovery 1.5 it has the option to do the ext2, Swap and the fat 32 partitions all at once I did 96m swap 512ext2 and then upgraded it up to ext4 and left the remaining for fat32 , when I save files it does put them in the fat32 patitition I believe since my ext4 partition does not loose any space and I already ftp'd most of my files back to the card that would easily exceed the 512m partition I just can't get the mount option to come up now when I plug it into my computer other then that everything works perfectly
open console and type "dmesg", then insert the card and type it again, compare the few last lines, if there's anything diferent saying about MMC/SD, post it here (only the card related stuff)
Good luck,
Bushman

e: can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1

This is the error message I was getting on my htc evo 4g in Amon RA recovery. My evo would not recognize the sd card. It would not mount. I don't know what caused it, but I figured out how to get rid of it. First , I searched for a solution and got scared. Some other devices were having this error and some said it was a mother board issue. Here is what I did. I took the sd card out and used an sd card reader with my laptop. The card needed to be re formatted. I re formatted it and then put it back in my device. I partitioned it. I had the sd card backed up already on my laptop, so I just transfered everything back. About one day has passed and it seems fine now. What caused this? I am suspicious of the following: I use Link2SD. I love this app, but something strange has been happening since I switched back to Sense. I had the sdext partitioned to upgrade to ext 3. I had it that way from when I was on cyanogen 7. When on CM7 the Link2SD app recognized the ext 3 and nothing went wrong. When I switched to Sense, Link2SD didn't recognize ext 3, but would create the mount script using ext 2 even though the card was partitioned with ext 3. It seemed to work fine, but after just a short time I ran into this problem. So, I am suspicious. Last, when I re partitioned the card, I left it at ext 2.
Hope this helps someone out.
Can't mount SDCARD
I am having the same and I partitioned my sdcard after I backed it up, and still the problem didn't fix. Please any more help would be very appreciated.

Mounting SDcard... always a problem

Well ive tried various Roms.... formatted the card and the internal storage in CWM. Also partitioned the card using the windows program MiniTool Partition Wizard.
and still i get issues when i want to mount sdcard.
It seems like they (internal/external sd card) each take turns mounting.
Anybody help me out???
I've had problems mounting my sd card as well, tried several things, what worked for me was to use a different cable to connect the phone to my PC (even though the cable I was using before still works for other devices!). Try it, might work. Good luck

Damaged SD Card

Hi guys,
My phones micro-sd card has been acting strange and was not being recognized at times by my phone. I then proceeded to put it in its SD card adapter and put it in my Mac and got an error saying the card was unreadable. I then put it in a reader on my PC and everytime I try to access the drive it gives me the 2 errors, "You need to format the drive...etc" and after clicking cancel it says that my drive is an unrecognized file format.
Recuva says it can't read the boot sector and running chkdsk gives me the message that the file format is RAW.
Just tried running ReclaiMe file recovery and it says the card is only 30.6MB while it is actually a 32GB card.
Do you guys think there is any hope? Or should I just move on?
Any help would appreciated. Got a lot of pictures and music I would love to save on the drive, plus ROM backups.
Thanks so much
Bump
I've killed an SD card before.. not sure how.. it had been partitioned EXT3 for a rom on a desire.. then re-formatted to normal..
but the problem came months after without notice one day the camera was failing and the gallery wouldn't open..
I tried a new SD card and things were fine so I figured the SD card died
Try to use MiniTool Partition Wizard on your pc, and delete ext partition and swap stay only on fat32. if that does not work format your card to exfat. If that doesn`t work try use program "winhex"(before i used it, my computer hadnt read my card). I repaired my card 3 times these methods.
You can use this ONLY on memory card reader.

problem formatting SD card

Hi All,
I have a problem with my SD card. (Sandisk 32gb).
The SD card was used in an android phone and formatted as internal storage, which I'm guessing encrypts the data as well.
In order to use another card in the phone, the card was removed and 'forgotten' in the phone (yeah... not very smart...)
I have already come to terms with the fact that my data is now lost forever, since the key for the encrypted data was deleted. I'm trying to reformat the card so I can use it again.
The problem: I can't format the SD card.
I've tried the following solutions, which did not work:
- Try to format the SD card using the phone. -> this gives an error message.
- Try to format the SD card using a computer:
The card doesn't show up in explorer, so I worked around using EaseUS partition master, when I try to wipe the disk, or when I try to delete partitions, I get an error. When I do a surface check, the program crashes.
- Try to clear the SD card using DiskPart, which gives a 'Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)' error.
What else could I try?
If you format your SD card directly from a PC, your choices are NTFS (which an Android device can't read) or FAT32 (inefficient & doesn't support files greater than 4G).
The best way to format an SD card is using the official SD Card Formatter from the SD Association:
https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/
This will format the card as exFAT which is supported by Android, while maximizing storage space.. Download, install, format, enjoy!

Thank you EEngineer for reacting so quickly!
I've tried the SD card formatter you recommended. However, although the card is recognised by my computer, it is not assigned a drive letter for some reason (I've tried to give it one using disk management, without success (it basically gives a cyclic redundancy check error every time I try to do anything with it)) and it doesn't show up in explorer. It follows that my card is not recognised by the formatting program, and so I can't get it to work.
My hypothesis is that the phone has formatted the card so that it cannot be read by my computer anymore and then threw away the key, so that it cannot be read by anything anymore. (which really sucks, because there's probably nothing wrong with the hardware of the card, and yet I'm going to have to throw it away if I can't get it to work)
Any other ideas?

Have you tried fdisk command?
There has been some time in between posts. Sorry for that. I really appreciate you helping me out.
I'm quite keen to get this issue resolved, since if I don't I've just wasted some money...

Yes, I have already tried fdisk. It resulted in the same error described above.

Try SD formatter for Windows, it has some tools to diagnose/repair SD cards.
