[Q] Got Root; Questions on next steps... - HTC Inspire 4G

I used Bubby's root method and got root working without any problems. Now I have some questions before i screw it up.
1. Can i delete everything from sd card and place my "backup" from pre-root on it?
2. I have a rom and kernel i want to flash downloaded. How do I do this?
I've read you have to wipe it first using CWM maybe? how do i find CWM to start this process?
3. Most importantly, how can i make a backup of my current setup so if i do screw it up, i can go back to this point.
Thanks for help, been searching for an hour and the more i read the more confused i get.

1. There are some files on your SD card that might be needed to return to S-On (partition7 files), but I removed them and was able to S-On a different way
2. To get to CWM, you must install ROM Manager (from the market), then go into ROM Manager and choose the option to "Flash clockworkmod recovery". Once you've done this, make sure fastboot is disabled and turn your phone off. Now hold VOL- and PWR until bootloader starts. Use the volume rocker to navigate to Recovery, and the PWR button to choose it. Now CWM will start. Before flashing a new ROM, it is recommended to wipe data/factory reset, wipe partition, and also go to the advanced menu and wipe Dalvik cache. Once you've done this, choose the option to "Install zip from SD card", then "Choose zip from SD", then choose the ROM you have downloaded. Once this is done, let the phone boot. Then reboot to recovery again and follow the same process for installing the kernel (without wiping this time)
3. When you get to CWM, there is a backup/restore option. Choose backup and it will backup your current setup. If you have to get back to it, choose restore

Thanks, Sounds alot easier than i was trying to make it.

A2SD on rooted Desire with stock ROM

I'm just wondering if it's possible to have a2sd on a stock rooted ROM? If it's possible it would be lovely if anybody would like to tell me EXACTLY how to set this up.
Thanks in advance
If you read the forums and use the search ability you will know how to do it. So i am going to be brief
Once your device is rooted and your familar with the recovery flashing from sd method you need apps2sd (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QKTUKHEM) copy this to your sd, wipe and flash like you would if your rooting.
Restart your phone
then when it boots back up keep the volume down held and you will see a hboot screen, then go to recovery (like you did when rooting) use the recovery.bat then you partition your sd card SWAP=0 and EXT2=512 then select ext2 to 3 then reboot and your done.
please read the check to see if installed thread for more info.

flashed to TNT lite 2.4 - boot loop help

I put the update and recovery in the internal sd card. I installed tnt and when I rebooted I went into a boot loop.
I then put update.zip and recovery ( changing to sdcard2 in command) and I see the box. It installs then it reboots into a boot loop.
What should I try next?

Per this very imformative guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
If your tablet bootloops…
Press and hold the power button to shut the device down. Boot back into Clockwork. Select the advanced option at the bottom, then go to “partition SD card”, for the first option select 4096, and for the second option select 64. Then, redo steps 7-10.

Follow same procedure with microsd 2, but this time install Clockwork .8. Same setup with placing Clockwork on the device.
Once installed you can access Clockwork at power-up by pressing power + volume up. Once there, clear the cache and data (two options on main screen and use volume to scroll and home to select). You should boot up now. If not, some of the XDA elders may need to chime in to help.
If still in bootloop, open Clockwork again, but this time go to bottom to activate USB storage. Connect USB and then activate- this should show you the internal space. Place the TnT 2.4 update in the root of it (no recovery directory).
1. Deactivate USB storage
2. Clean cache and data
3. Chose install update.zip
4. Pick the update.zip
Should be out of the loop once complete.
Try a reflash, clear cache, wipe the user data (in that order, try the next if the previous did not work). Worst case scenario is re-partitioning the SD card which seems to work most of the time.
I have mentioned this before, but I really think that our devices are either not imaged properly or our SD partitions become corrupt over time. I would also argue that clockworkmod is really a requirement for anyone using these mods. It's so critical when problems like this occur.
I tried this:
Instructions for those with clockworkmod .08:
- Extract the RAR and place the update.zip file anywhere in /sdcard (do NOT just copy the original RAR, that won't work! You have to open up the RAR and copy the update.zip inside. You don't need the /recovery folder for cwm). I would recommend putting the file on the root of /sdcard, since it will be easier to upgrade that way.
- Reboot into recovery. Do a backup first, as that's always a good idea.
- Then, choose "apply sdcard:update.zip", assuming you added the update.zip to the root of /sdcard, and run it.
- Reboot.
Note: I have heard reports that this might "Status 7" and I have no fix for that, yet. It seems to be intermittent.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Clockworkmod v.08 only update.zip (for technical users only!) :
I installed the sd card update and I still get the same reboot loop. What am I doing wrong?
The flash was probably successful, but a boot loop occurred afterwards. This does happen. Since you have clockworkmod, you have a lot of things you can do, as I mentioned.
I got it running.
I fixed the adoble flash, installed a pdf viewer, and titanium backup.
I cant't see the tabs in titanium backup for some reason.
My screen does not auto rotate even thought its set to auto rotate.
Install Adw.Launcher , if you want it to rotate.

Flashing roms question....

coming from a G2, i have flashed a many a roms, did wipes, etc. my question is not toally newbish, but is newbish to the G2x.

Yes, should be the same as any other phone with CWM. As long as the flashable .zip is made for CWM and your phone, you're good to go

Hey guys I'm coming from Windows mobile and I've never used CWM before. I rooted, installed CWM using Gunman's directions last night, and I downloaded CM7 to my extSD but I just don't know exactly what to do next. Is there a link someone could provide me or give me directions on the steps I need to take after I'm loaded into recovery?
Do I just wipe and then install zip from the folder? Thanks for the help. Sorry for being a newb.

So once you have recovery, you can now flash custom roms, kernals and themes.
1. Put the files you've downloaded into you ext SD
2. Reboot into recovery by pressing and holding power + vol down button til you see a red recovery screen
3. MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP
4. Wipe data/cache
5. Install .zip
6. Choose the ROM that you want to flash
7. Reboot
Edit: Also if you'd like to save your apps and their data, I suggest installing Titanium backup and make backups for your apps before you flash anything. And if all else fails, just reboot back to recovery and restore your nandroid backup
Somewhere I must have done something different, when I boot into CWM thru the button method I get the red recovery but it doesn't see my backups. When I use Rom Manager, and boot into recovery I get the orange/yellow recovery and it shows my backups. What I need to do to fix so the red recovery sees my backups?

Thanks a lot for the step-by-step list. For some reason when I navigate my folders in CWM the .zip files are not showing up. For CM7, then only file that it will allow me to install is the boot_animation.zip, which I'm sure won't boot the actual CM7 software. Oy ve. I'll keep messing around with it and see what I can figure out. Maybe I'll load a few other roms and see if those .zip files will show up when I navigate the folders.
Has anybody had this problem? Loading the boot.img file to a particular area on your ext_sd card (which was the one I set up when I installed CWM and nvidia or whatever it's called), and then once you try to find it it doesn't show up? Ugh. I'll try at it some more tonight and let you guys know what I find out.
I don't have to rename the boot.img file to update.sd.zip or anything do I? I should just be able to navigate to the folder and install the file, right?

You don't want to unpack the .zip file. The way you downloaded it should be the way you put it on your SD card. Do not rename anything inside the .zip.
So, take the cm7.zip file that you installed, whatever the exact name of it is, and copy that to your external sd card. When you're in recovery, pick the option to chose .zip from sd card, navigate to the .zip you just placed on the card, and it should ask you to install it.
I hope that helps. Let me know if you're confused about anything
If I were to flash cm7 is the newer red text bootloader OK to use?

Alright, I think I got it. On my old HD2 I used to have to unzip the deal when I would run it from my sd card. I think that's where I was confused. So I just download the .zip file, don't extract it at all, place it in the folder, and just run it straight from my phone. Thanks for your help. Hopefully now it will work.
EDIT: That worked. Thanks knuckelpuc. Woohoo, CM7 how I've missed you.
I have a quick noob question undeserving of its own thread so im gonna borrow this one real quick
Do nandroid backups restore the kernel?
Thanks!

i am new to all these words and stuff but want to learn them all...please help...
Very easy, hook up your phone to your PC and select USB mode, drop your downloaded zip file in the SD card (the rom) then disconnected from PC, turn off phone and take out battery for 2 secounds, put battery in and hold down volume and power button till a white hboot screen shows, it will load some files, just wait (its normal) use volume down and hit recovery, once in recovery make a backup of your current rom, ALWAYS BACKUP, to do that wipe dalvik cache first then hit backup, after its complete go to mounts and storage and format cache, data and system, once complete go to install zip from sd card, find the zip you want to flash/install on the list (that would be your rom zip file) click install, once done reboot your done "click thanks if it helps"

[Q] Infuse data usage

My infuse is using Data plans like theres no tomorrow.
I have tried disabling the packet data option in wireless settings, and putting the phone in airplane mode.
Its somehow using data. Would installing a custom ROM fix this?

With the ICS ROM's and up, it's built in to be able to disable mobile data quite easily (Settings, Data Usage). For CyanogenMod, this can be made a quicksetting.
You could try a custom ROM. They are open source so sneaky stuff is hard to get away with. A good place to start is CyanogenMod 11. But if you would rather not go through that hassle (if you are otherwise happy with Gingerbread), you can try getting a Data Switch, and then track it's usefulness with a Data Counter Widget.
I have tried data blockers.
Can always try a custom ROM then. Here is the process that people seem to follow these days (note, if you have a Rogers Infuse like me, steps 1 and 2 will be different):
1. Either use Odin or Heimdall One-Click. Follow instruction on how to do it.
2. While phone running install sgs kernel flasher from Market/Google Play.
2a. Copy/transfer Synthesis GB Kernel to your Internal SD card.
2b. Start up sgs kernel flasher and choose it from your Internal SD card. Phone will auto-reboot after done flashing.
2c. Wait a bit while your phone convert to new partition format and activate lagfix. Your CWM recovery version should be 2.5.1.3
3. Reboot phone into CWM Recovery and DISABLE vodoo lagfix and /system lagfix. Reboot once done. Phone will convert partition to old format. If you don't turn the lagfix off the phone will hang at Samsung logo when you install new rom.
4. Prepare your flavor rom/gapp for installation by copying them to your Internal SD card.
4a. Go into CWM Recovery mode and install the rom. You will need to do this twice since the 1st time was just a warning about partition format being different.
4b. Reboot once done. You will need to REMOVE the battery to power down the booting process and put it back in.
4c. Go into the New CWM Recovery and install the rom again since the previous attempt only install the new CWM Recovery.
5. Install Gapp.
6. a. Wipe: Cache / Factory Reset <--- Probably don't need it since it's new install from stock unless you installed stuff. Just to be safe.
b. Wipe: Cache Partition
c. Wipe: Dalvik Cache
7. Reboot
