I'm trying to decide if I should port my AT&T number to my new verizon acct or port it to G.voice and get a new phone number for my Verizon phone.
Anyone think one or the other might be better?
Really want a dual core android phone, but don't want to miss out on unlimited data 4G plan.
I've been using my Google Voice number as my primary number for at least a year now. Unless MMS is really important to you, I'd use Google Voice.
Exactly what he said. You also miss out on free mobile to mobile though which is a bummer.

That could be pretty big for some people but the only time I'm on the phone for a really long time, I'm at home and I'm talking to a girl. All I have to do is open up Gmail and make the call through Google Talk.

Been known at howard forums for quite a while now. If you can get it, do as I would as it's probably never going to be offered again.

Huge thanks for posting this thread. Capped data was my only gripe with my current at&t plan. Thanks to you pointing this out I went to the atrix thread, met up with a fellow xda member and borrowed his iphone and now I have unlimited data. All within a few hours of finding out.
Careful, I clicked on that link and my virus scanner went off. Wiped out my PC as no exe files will run.

I can't tell if your joking. My head just exploded trying to figure it out.
I'm not joking. I clicked on it to read about it, and Avg went off. I quarantined the virus and now when I try to run an exe file my computer asks me what program to use to open it. I'm about an hour in trying to figure it out. I wasn't running anything else except for my browser window when it happened.

That sounds like a lot of work. I was talking to an AT&T rep the other day about how I could get my unlimited data plan back, he said,
"Call customer service, explain to them how you had the unlimited plan before & since switching to the 2GB plan it just isn't working out. When they tell you it can't be done tell them you'll have to cancel & go with another carrier. Just TRY it. That's all I'm gonna say."
So I'm going to give that a shot, hopefully they don't give me to much trouble.
I hope this works for me

If you had unlimited before you can have success with calling but if not the iPhone trick takes an hour of your time and works without fail.

Yeah but even if you have to buy one you can get them from an online seller with a return policy which winds up costing only shipping charges.

Isn't this community about sharing? If you don't like the idea then don't post a comment... I was grandfathered in on unlimited data and thought I would share with those that don't share the same luxury. (end rant)

I understand your point of view but not everyone had an unlimited data plan to begin with. I personally didn't and bought the captivate in September so I wasn't given the option. I tried calling back in Oct/Nov to try to talk a representative into giving me the unlimited plan but had no success. Another thing to consider is you may not be given back the plan no matter how much you complain/threaten to move to verizon. This is something that is known to work for the time being so I don't see why it's a big deal.
I had an unlimited plan before I got my Captivate and they told me I had to switch to the 2 gig plan because my previous one wouldn't work with smart phones. So my question is, did I get screwed and if so is it possible to call customer service and switch back.

Thats weird, prior to the captivate I had the samsung jack which is a winmo 6.1/6.5 phone like the pantech matrix. I had no problem transferring my unlimited plan to the captivate. Hate to say it, but sounds like you got the shaft...

Put your sim in an iphone 2g.
That gives you the option of unlimited data for feature phone. get it and then you can grandfather in to smartphone unlimited

ive done the trick twice for my personal lines and another three times for friends its simple
1. reset all the settings so u have to activate it
2.insert your sim card and activate enabling the unlimited data
3. be patient and wait until the phone says activated
4. WAIT UNTIL ITS ACTIVATED
5. once activated call att customer service
6. say ur upgrading from the iPhone 2g to the new phone and request to be grandfathered into the new unlimited plan
7. if they say they can ask for a supervisor and go higher
Will this work on a 3g or 3gs?

No, you can continue to use unlimited data. That's the "official" way of having unlimited data. This is for people who never had it, like myself. I wish the iphones that are on ebay didn't cost $100+... It's a lot for something I'll use once.

I suppose not.
none of these hokey pokey is necessary. Just go to an ATT store and have them change your data plan to 4g unlimited for $30. It is not an available option on the web.
I want to know if it is possible to make phone calls just like original Galaxy Tab.
It is essential for me.
Only if you order the unlocked international version.

I think yes, in fact no matter whether you buy a international version or not, because when i was confused i came across many website from here i get the proper idea, thus i would like to recommend you that you should try to visit here for further information.
It can be a bad ass 7" phone if you want it to

I couldn't figure out how to make it work, thanks.
I wish it did out of the box, but sadly no? My plan is once I get my $250 in rebates, I'm gonna make my own number I've had for almost ten years into a data number for the tab, that way people can still text me. Then sign up for a google voice number and use groove ip for a number to call out or for people to call me. I literally only talk on the phone for 30 minutes a month if that.
It sucks having those two numbers but I really don't wanna carry around a smartphone anymore, just this.
So I'm also curious as to why u couldn't set up grove ip and google voice as its gonna b essential to my plan.
Sent from my SGH-T869 using XDA App
I use mine as my primary phone. There are 3 main type of gtab plus :
P6200 is the international version, unbranded and a fully featured unlocked phone. Even better than the original tab because the P6200 has an earpiece. This model is not officially sold in the US by any mayor retailers or phone companies. It can only be bought in Malaysia, and Indonesia and Australia. Or on Ebay. I bought it mine, like others on this forum through ipmart (Google it).
The second version is the one sold by t-mobile. Like the original tab, and has the phone part disabled, and so far there is no way of enable it like the classic tab. You can only use the radio for data.
Last one is the wifi only model. P6210.
Hope is a little clearer now.

OK so I leave to Puerto Rico on Saturday. Then two days later on a cruise out of San juan. Anyway I called verizon today to let them know so they can enable my global capabilities. The fees per minute and megabyte are ridiculous obviously. The Verizon rep I spoke to said I won't be charged if I keep my phone on wifi. I plan to keep it on airplane mode till I enable wifi. I'm leaving my daughter behind and I want to be able to call and check up on her without a ridiculous bill. Is anyone aware of any wifi calling apps that will allow free international calls. I have google voice but I'm not sure if that will work. Any help is appreciated.

You can get wifi calling through signing up for gvoice and using sipdroid, but the wifi on the ships is expensive. From what I remember you can use your phone in Puerto Rico, but it's pricey and theres not much free wifi.
Good luck finding cheap service and have fun.

Thanks I think the verizon rep made an assumption that wifi on the ship would be free. I figured it will would be as well. This sucks my bill will be ridiculous.

Cruise ship wifi is not free from the ones I've been on. But if you really need to call home use a VoIP clients and a VoIP provider. I use Bria and configured it to Flowroute (https://support.flowroute.com/entries/20325927-how-to-configuring-bria-softphone-on-the-iphone).
Another option (this one is free) use gtalk over wifi and then initiate a voicecall.
Good luck and enjoy your cruise!

Sorry my title isn't very clear but I don't know how to phrase it any better. I'll try to explain my situation as simple as possible:
I'm currently in the USA on Verizon using a Galaxy Nexus. I'm going to be starting medical school in January in the Caribbean. Right now my phone is under contract on my family's plan until 2014 and I am using grandfathered unlimited data. The data plan is limited to my phone number and I signed a contract to pay for it for a year last month, so it'll expire in September 2013.
What I want to do is carry my phone down there and use voice and text over WiFi. Can anyone with any experience suggest the best way to do this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
The best option is Google Voice and GrooveIP (I think the latter costs money, but the two paired together should be the dynamic duo)

Also, specifically, does anyone have experience using Skype out of their home country? I've never used it once so any experiences anyone could share are all appreciated.
