Hello everyone, I've been trying to root my g1 since last night and nothings working for some reason. I've done a bunch of updates and stuff and nothing seems to work. If someone could direct me to a legitimate guide on how to completely reverse my g1 to it's original state that would help. Also a BIG problem that I'm having is that I've followed an unbricking guide, but now when I try to manually update my phone to firmware 1.6, no matter what I try my phone stays on 1.0. I have no idea why this happens. So if someone could give me a guide to completely reverse my phone and get 1.6 on it, I would appreciate it very much. Also, after I do this, I would like to try rooting it again because I want the wireless tethering on it. If someone could direct me to a good rooting guide, I would appreciate it as well. THANX
So being new to the android system and having some experience in the past with WinMo and ROMS and flashing the 1st thing I did with my USSC Mesmerize was to of course root it. No reason.
Used z4root and worked perfect (I guess.LOL) Now have Root Explorer and Superuser.
1st question... Is there a way to unring the bell and Unroot or Reroot. *still learning some new terminology*.
2nd Question.. If I flash with a ROM (once I find one that sounds good) will it be possible to do a hard reset back to factory settings through the Power Button/volume button method. (used that one once as I installed and played with different apps to find what I wanted and needed) It shows a menu when rebooting giving a few options on reset.
Last. If anyone can point me to the Roid Hacking for Dummys section I would be forever grateful. Plans are to learn the ROM processes and work into some app development. (some coding experience and chronic insomniac).
BTW Nice to meet ya all ..
and I thought my Crackberry was addictive

I'm using z4root as well. It gives an unroot option at the main screen. I would assume this would unroot the phone, but I am new as well. My phone unroots everytime I put a new ROM on it, which is strange...

I'm learning but reading and rereading everything. I don't want to offer his help for him, but I know that phidelt82 has been a massive help to me. I cannot thank him enough.
I came from a crackberry as well and this is way more addictive, haha.

To unroot, I would use Super One Click. It is posted in these forums, just do a search and you should easily find it. Once you have it on a Windows PC or virtualbox, you just have to plug your phone in and click UnRoot.
Once you flash a new ROM, if you do a factory reset, all you will be doing is resetting what is stock for that particular ROM. If you want to go back to stock, you will have to flash the stock files using Odin, or flash a stock ROM and unroot it.
Lastly, if you are considering getting in to developing, it is a lot of fun. Be prepared to learn Linux if you don't already know it. Unfortunately, from what I've found in the learning process, there isn't much in the way of a complete document or guide to tell you how to do it. You just fumble around and learn by trial and error piecing what you read together from other phones and talking to people who are already developing. I have only been involved for a month or so, but I'm willing to help you out with whatever I can. We definitely need more people in the mix.

1st and formost.. Thank you for your input. Much appreciated.
I am about to try my 1st flash with the Super Clean mod on these forums.
I do have one other question.
is the MEZ basically same as Fascinate? Can we use same ROMS ?

DO NOT FLASH FASCINATE ROMS... it will make you're phone barf... lol
really though. don't flash anything that isn't for the Mesmerize. I can be dangerous.
but yes they are exactly the same... only different. when you look in our firmware there is still a bunch of leftover vzw crap in there.
Thanks .. LOL seen Fac listed in Clockwork in Downloadable ROMS area. Good thing I wasn't in a adventurous mood tonight .. LOL
I am thinking about flashing the superclean rom, but I'm still a little hesitent until I read into it more. I'm new to phone freedom, my crackberry was not nearly as fun as this phone is. I can't wait to see what we can come up with in the future.

I'm still using the pick and pack rom. I like being able to choose what programs I want to keep, rather than having all or none. I flashed with the voodoo and it's significantly faster.
I'm also a former blackberry user and I agree, these phones are freedom.
If you need any help, feel free to ask. I'm new to this and still getting a lot of help from phidelt82, but I'll do my best. I save all my chat files and am making a list of what exactly to do in order to get backups going, flash roms, install kernals, etc.
I've never been able to actually get superoneclick to connect to my phone. it just sits there saying waiting for phone and kinda locks up.

Try a different version. 1.5.5 works for me but 1.5.1 doesn't.

Actually that's how you get the mes CWM to work. You have to install the clockworkmod using the thread in the apps and dev section, then flash the fascinate recovery to finish it up. It's essential for flashing roms and such.
OK so I followed a youtube video tutorial on rooting, and I think it's the boot.img that messed everything up. It would boot up before but it was stuck on the Google screen, the OS didn't load. So I found a GRH78 or something Nandroid backup and ran that, but the capacative buttons don't work, the screen isn't calibrated correctly and the phone radio isn't correct either. Then I remembered my Nexus S was the newer GT-I9023 GRI54 and I need a GRI54 NANDROID stock backup (which I can't seem to find!)
Guys, what do you suggest I do at this point? I can't revert to stock (I've been trying)
I just got this Nexus S and have been spending hours trying to restore firmwares, finding it online, but now I know I need the GRI54 Android 2.3.3 backup, and if anyone has that I'd be super happy
I really need help
you most likely need the 9023 method of rooting
see the stickied guides
I fixed it. I downloaded a GT-I9023 GRI45 firmware file off of somewhere here (<3 xda forums) it wasn't a nandroid backup, but I used the clockworkmod to install it and surprisingly, it booted up again. (of course, I had the crappy 2.1 installed before so maybe this acted as an 'update' and fixed all the problems, but anyways it works smooth now as it did before )
I knew I could figure it out.
Not to be an ass, but I think there's a lot of difference between bricking a phone and being unable to boot. You've never bricked your phone, since you could still switch ROMs by using the Recovery.
This is a misleading title. Bricking is when you just can't enter not even the bootloader/Recovery.
you are 100% right
unfortunately many people keep getting those 2 terms confused, and use it inappropriately
every body needs to chip in and help newbies learn the correct terminology.
thank you

Looks like I've managed to act and look like a fool...
I tried to root my Nexus S with Superboot, unaware that it was version-specific (I should have known that ). To make a long story short, I tried to root my phone with Superboot which is written for android 2.3.3, while I'm running 2.3.4.
The phone can get to fastboot/recovery, but won't boot. I googled to find how revert to a stock 2.3.3 or 2.3.4, but somehow did not find what I was looking for.
Phone was vanilla, I hadn't installed anything specific on it besides twitter, FB, etc.
From a powered-off phone, how would I manage to revert to a clean phone ?
Thanks for your help, people.

<EDIT:
All the solutions I've seen required CWM or similar, and a rooted phone. Since my problems started because I wanted to root my NS, I figured that I was out of luck for a while, and a non-working phone was out of question.
I went at my retailer and managed to get a new phone free of charge I *****-footed around the fact I was installing an unsupported (by the carrier) update/app, the clerk wasn't very familiar with the NS so it went well with them and they gave me a new phone
/EDIT>
Okay. I am a virgin rooter, but I have I have been following the various threads for awhile and I am ready to take the plunge. Love the Xoom but would like to be able to read-write micro-SD and have better USB access to external storage and devices (and tinker with OC, etc). I find instructions for various configurations, but not mine. The forum help looks terrific but I would like to start down the correct path. Can anyone point me to a proven method for my configuration (US 3G 3.2 stock)?
Thanks in advance.

Dont do what I did and follow a friends advice as well as the tutorial haha... i got stuck on the first step cause of him haha!(and that was 2 days of not so much fun haha)
Good luck and let us know if it worked for you ^_^ (as this is a WIFI Only tutorial, but we ahve the say model number so I do not know how this can be any different?)

Thanks. I will read and reread (several times) before attempting. Probably won't get to it until this weekend. I'm a bit anxious about using the wifi instructions on a three-G. We'll see what happens...
I'll go out on a limb here and add that YD, may be like myself, I read the instructions tonight, I'm in the same boat, but when I say I'm a Virg. rooter, I mean that I'm I'm totally new to Linux/android and the instructions still don't make sense.
Sooo, is there a dummy version that fills in some of the little details? What I got out of the post was that all the downloads go on your laptop or desktop and after setting things up on ur PC you attach ur xoom via USB? That really is the extent of my understanding.
Michaelaw
I'm not much more experienced than you virgins, but I have rooted my xoom and have uploaded a different rom. It was a lot of trial and error. Mostly error. I'd be happy to talk to either of you on google talk and walk you through it if you have any questions. Again I'm not a pro, but some of the instructions are intimidating for the first-timers, and maybe I can help make some sense to it. My gtalk is radi0chik. the 0 is a zero.

If you are willing to downgrade I posted a possible solution at the end of this thread: http://www.xoomforums.com/forum/motorola-xoom-development/8693-xoom-3g-3-2-first-root-2.html
Post #15
Have you tried this link?
http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/...-update-your-3g-xoom-3-2-directions-file.html
If you already rooted I followed the instructions under the header "You Must Use this nandroid backup if you are running a non stock Rom. This is already Rooted"
All you're doing there is upgrading the recovery then restoring a backup for 3.2 that is rooted. No wipe needed. It just restores the files you need to be on 3.2. Once I was done it stopped nagging me to do the 3.2 update & said I was up to date.
Done!
I finally got around to trying to root my 3G 3.2 stock. I used the updated tutorial from jase33 at this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1170760
I had a few minor issues that I was able to resolve without too much difficulty (slow and steady). I see at least one other poster on that thread had a similar issue.
[oshizzle1991] "I was able to unlock my bootloader, but when i try and flash the rootboot.img, i get this error "error: cannot load "rootboot.img"" any ideas? i'm very experienced with adb and rooting lol, its not like i dont have adb or fastboot set up. any help would be appreciated!"
I found a solution but I wasn't able to post it on that thread (Developer's) because I am a newb. Here's what worked for me. After receiving the same error message (several times), I typed this in at the command prompt:
cd C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools
THEN I continued with the tutorial from where I had been stuck::
fastboot flash boot 3Grootboot.img
It was smooth sailing the rest of the way.
Big THANKS to jase33.
Has anyone figured out to root the lg optimus m 2.2.2?
you can give it a shot using the following rooting methods. depending on your android version, use one of the following:
for 2.2/2.2.1, use either z4root or superoneclick
for 2.2.2, use gingerbreak
for 2.3.x, use this (ignore step 1)

Maybe with if you put it in recovery mode? Home key + Volume Down key + Power key at the same time and you'll reset your phone to the factory presets
Resetting the LGMS690 to factory defaults after being rooted
Just an FYI, if you reset to factory defaults, I am guessing on any Android device, after being rooted, there could be issues. Ponder a moment. Did you delete anything at all from the main system? Whatever you deleted stays deleted. You have to flash the phone's firmware, similar to the old days. I would suggest, if you are to bring the phone back to Metro, to first get the flashing program LGPST, (please do some google searches on how to flash it back to stock.), THEN bring it back. That a way, no one the wiser. (oh, also make definite sure you put the MEID back in place, flashing zero's it out. They might get suspicious.). In some cases, this alone might solve some issues with it. Good luck to ya's.

Hey chance 4434 and sweetnsour. I just wanted to offer my $.02. I have personally rooted 2.2.1, and researched, and thus far, as far as I know, 2.2.2 on this phone is yet to be rooted. If anyone out here can point me in the direction of "those that are leet and know how to root", I am seriously curious on the how to, and offering to beta test, or hex edit, or do whatever I can to figure out how to get this done. I have not a clue where to begin. (I figure, get the 2.2.2 bin from LG, on the PC, without the phone, yet, but how does one do that?) Anyways, I am getting another MS690 this week, and willing to put it to the test, with 2.2.2 rooting, or even trying to cram 2.3.x on there. Anything to get away from that 2.2.1 bug of emailing people your texts. How awful. Ok, long enough. Still searching....
