Please help this newbie out!... I recently rooted my Inspire 4G with attn1's hack kit. That went smooth without issue and I have tried a variety of custom ROMs thanks to this great community, but I have noticed a random issue with booting into ClockworkMod Recovery since... I installed Rom Manager and ClockworkMod Recovery 3.0.0.6 and the problem is that sometimes I can boot into recovery and sometimes not. It only seems to work is the first time I reboot immediately after flashing ClockworkMod, then subsequent reboots the phone just boots normally. (I hold volumn down and press power.) I have also tried installing Amon's Recovery (supersonic 2.3) manually using Fastboot - it seems to install without error but when I try holding the down volume button and hitting power - phone just boots normally. So it seems I am stuck with a ClockworkMod install that does not really work with reliability.... I am lost now trying to figure out why this is happening.
Can someone that has seen similar issues provide some tips/suggestions?
TIA

I had the same problem... quit using version 3.0.0.6 and go back to the earliest version, 2.5.1.3 through All ClockworkMod Recoveries. Worked for me.

You don't have 'fast boot' enabled in settings/application? If so it will not really shut off completely and when you power it up with VOL- it will not work.
i'm also having issues getting cwm to work outside the black screen. i have tried sense/ no sense roms and none have been able to bring up cwm outside the blank screen. i am also running 3.0.0.6 or whatever it is but that has not helped my issue

[Q] Clockworkmod recovery not booting up
I have my phone rooted and ready to flash a custom ROM. I want to install android revolution 4g 4.0. I read that I need to ahve CWM version 3.0.0.6 to flash a 2.3 ROM. Anyways, when i select reboot into recovery in ROM Manager, my phone reboots and shows the HTC logo but then it fades to black screen and does nothing. If i press the power button, the phone reboots normally into the OS. Does anyone know how to fix this so i can install a custom ROM?
I have this exact same issue. Although i can load roms from choosing "Install from sd card" i cannot just boot into recovery and install it from there.
I just recently bought my inspire 4g a week ago.
Mine is 2 days old. Now i cant get it to boot up because it keeps trying to boot into CWM recovery but it cant. Its and endless loop.
Mine wont even load recovery. It reboots the phone but then just fades to a black screen. I cant get back into the OS

still stuck doing that too. can get the phone to reboot. but stuck at htc screen or black cwm screen. also checked sd card and is corrupted. i was thinking if i could just flash a new rom over to fix boot issue. but i need some screens to blindly walk through to flash. cwm is 3.0.0.5 if that matters. thanks. on a side note. i think i have a new cm7rc2 build on a formated sd card to try and minimize the guess work on what to click

Try booting holding pwr and vol down together to boot to the bootloader.
From there you should be able to boot into recovery as long as your root stuck

Nope, when I click recovery, it just reboots the phone.
I am having the same issue. It began after i installed rom manager and flashed the clockword recovery and accidentally deleted the rom on the root of my sd that i was currently running. I tried back tracking. I deleted clockwork mod on my sd card and deleted rom manager from my phone and put my rom back on the root of the sd. Still no luck. It wouldnt boot into the bootloader when i had rom manager and it wont do it when I power the phone up with the volume button down. It just reboots my phone to the current rom i am running. I know this is kinda redundant to what everyone else said, i was just trying to add more details. Replies would be greatly appreciated!

Olson that just happened to me too. I flashed clockwork mod recovery from the ROM manager now I can't get into recovery. I was running TWRP... Team win recovery before ibdid this and was having no problems then... Please help!
I'm running Nocturnal stock ROM, ROM Manager, and CWM Recovery and using every option known to boot to recovery results in just a reboot. Holding down power and volume down boots to HBoot.
Same problem for me. I cannot boot into recovery...
What CWM are you guys using? I believe if you unlock via HTC method v5 of CWM wont work but v4 does. If you have a look at the Q&A section in the Evo 3d forum this question has been asked a few times so you may find an answer there.
i had same issue
this is caused when we go into ROM Manager and when >(we update the ClockworkMod)< this is whats not letting us into our revolutionary recovery. It is fixable I did this to my device a few times and just did it again I have to refresh my memory on how to fix it but once i do i will be happy to explain how i did it.
Okay like i had just mentioned in my previous message i had the same issue a few times to fix this is simple i just had to refresh my memory. Open up CMD on your computer and just like you did when rooting your device open up the folder that had all the root necessities mine was "rootevo3dnew" then with you device connected type in "fastboot flash recovery cwm-4.0.1.4-shooter.img" then load the the bootloader by hitting the power button then hit recovery and BOOM lol you got your blue revolutionary setup.

The reason I think you guys have been having this issue is because v5 of cwm is buggy on the EVO v4 is not when you install VIA ROM manager it installs the most up to date v5 this then could cause u to lose recovery.

that is exactly what is happening but theres no need for the panic its just a simple fix all you have to do is install the cwm that came with the rooting files and u will have your recovery back people just need to avoid updating their cwm with rom manager.
Hey all,
Noob here. I'm pretty sure my topic has been asked before but unfortunately, I am lacking in certain terms and I think I'm looking for answers in the wrong place for the past 2 hours.
Anyhow, I have rooted my HTC Evo 3D using step by step instructions laid out by htcevohacks.com. After the rooting, I have flashed the rom Synergy_RLS1-Shooter using CWM. I have since come across a ROM that I'd like to use in replacement but I cannot figure out how to boot back into CWM Recovery. I have tried to launch CWM Recovery from fastboot but when i try to boot up the CWM image, it just waits and waits no thing happens. I've also tried to boot from ROM manager and I have also tried TWRP but the damn phone refuses to boot up in CWM for me to flash the new ROM, Olympus Trinity XE.
Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong?? I think it has something to do with S-OFF/S-ON but I am an unfortunate noob that does not know the difference and it's killing me....
You can go into the ROM manager app and there is an option to reboot in recovery. Or, since you have an HTC, power the phone down, hold Volume down and power button. This will take you to the Hboot screen where you can select "recovery". Please note that when making selections in Hboot, you use the power button to make your selections.
Edit: Just saw that you tried to boot in from ROM manager. So you will have to go through the Hboot screen.

Hey thanks for the feedback. I have tried using Hboot. I tried using "recovery" as you suggested but all it does is restart the phone. The HTC splash screen pops up, then it blacks out only for it to POP up again, then it loads my ROM splash screen. Also thru Hboot, I tried to connect to a pc and flash cwm and other recover img's but they didnt work either...
I unlocked and rooted my tablet yesterday and everything appeared to be working fine. After using it for a couple hours and restarting it a few times it stopped working and is now locked in a boot loop. When I try boot the tablet it comes on and gets to the animation where the glint of light goes across the Asus logo but it does not finish and instead it stops there and I get the moving circles at the bottom. I've left it running there for several hours and it just hangs.
I've tried erasing the data and booting to linux but the same thing happens when I try either of those.
I've also tried flashing a number of different ROMs, but all that happens is it starts installing and then I get the Android guy on his side error screen.
I hadn't done anything to the ROM and was still running 10.6.1.14.4. I even downloaded that same ROM from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2266519 but I get the same error message when I try flash that ROM.
I would really, REALLY appreciate any ideas at all - and thanks in advance for any suggestions.

this gonna sound odd but i had exact same prob when i rooted and flashed chromix rom. it went. what i did was flash it once with the rom with secure wipe, then i flashed again. and it got stuck at optimizing apps, then i tried reflashing couldnt get it to boot, what i ended up doing was using clockwork mod to factory reset my tablet, then had to restart, and reflash, this time it actually got to main screen. dont let it discharge/reboot for awhile as im bout to post a issue im having with it. but thats what i did to make it work for me.

the thing i found showed me to installed the clockwork mod first before i did any flashing, i rooted device then i flashed once clockwork mod was installed, i had to root, then install rom manager and goo manager, from within there i installed the clockwork recovery script/mod then i proceeded to flash chromi-X DEODEX.
Did you flash the correct bootloader? I had the same problem, look for my posts in the last few pages of ChromiX.

Seems to me you installed Asus factory stock rom JB 4.2.1 (10.6.1.14.4), which means you have the latest bootloader, then you unlocked and rooted your device, however, you never installed any custom recovery like TWRP or CWM (clockmod). Now your device is boot looping. You need to boot into stock recovery by turn off your device, hold volume down and power button until you see white text on the screen, now release both buttons, you should see 3 icons (RCK, Android and wipe data). NOW you are in fastboot mode. Let me know at least you can get that far, before we continue....

Give this a try, the factory Asus firmware zip file that you downloaded, unzip the file, you should see another zip file, rename this new zip file to "EP201_768_SDUPDATE.zip" (without quotation), then copy it to the root of your sdcard then boot into stock recovery and execute the RCK again. Make sure you don't have any other zips laying around in the root of your sdcard.

THIS WORKED!!! Thanks so much. I was really worried I had bricked it.
So now one last question --- WHY did that work? Is there somewhere I could go to read up on this kind of stuff? I've tried surfing the XDA forum but there's a lot of stuff like this where someone gets there problem solved, but not much explaining why something worked so I can learn more about it.

Somehow the stock recovery was reinstalled on your tablet, thus letting this method work. It however does not on CWM or TWRP. All you did was manually reinstall a stock rom back onto your tablet. How it got the stock recovery is beyond me unless you flashed a stock ROM from CWM and didnt realize what you were installing.

Since the JB 4.2.1 upgrade, this is the most reliable method to install Asus full stock firmware. Also, since you're unlocked, let root the device by go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2230763 download the tool and root it. Once rooted, I suggest that you should install TWRP custom recovery, by download Goomanager from the market, open the app and tab on the 3 little boxes on the top right hand corner, select "install recovery scripts" , this will shutdown your device and install custom TWRP recovery script, once this installed, you can download "rebooter" from the market and this app has many options, one of them is allowed you easily boot into custom recovery.
Okay, so I rooted my LGG2X and downloaded Eagles Blood ICS build, and flashed it via rommanager, this was my first time doing this and I didn't think I would brick my phone but I did. It's stuck in the boot screen everytime I turn it on, it goes past the LG logo and stops at the Eagles Blood logo then the screen goes black after awhile. My biggest problem is, the phone WILL NOT boot into recovery, i've tried and tried. The vol up and down and power button all at the same time and NOTHING happens. I also tried to get back to STOCK using Nvflash but it just wasn't working for me. Can someone please help me? lol im stuck using a non android and it's absolutely killing me

Oh, and a properly installed version of EB needs vol+power button. The recovery option doesnt work.
I rooted my MT4GS a few months ago but stuck with the stock ROM. I decided I wanted to try out the CyanogenMod 9.1 ICS ROM. I followed the following steps:
1) Installed ROM Manager.
2) ROM Manager indicated a newer version of ClockworkMod Recovery and I installed it (5.0.2.7).
3) Using ROM Manager, did a full backup of the current ROM. All went well.
4) Using ROM Manager, downloaded and installed CyanogenMod 9.1.0 stable-doubleshot. I specified to wipe the data and cache partitions. The installation seemed to go normally.
When the phone rebooted, it was stuck at the logo screen. Had to remove the battery to turn it off. Tried a couple times, still the same.
Since I had the backup, I decided I would use CWM to restore the old ROM.
When I boot into recovery mode, it shows CWM 5.0.2.7, but whatever option I try to choose from the recovery menu, The screen just goes blank with the CWM logo in the middle and nothing else happens. Hitting the power button returns me to the menu, but no option works, even power down or reboot. It just goes back to the CWM logo again and I have to remove the battery to shut it down.
So, I thought I would try using fastboot to flash the ROM again. When I boot the phone into the boot loader and select fastboot, then plug the phone in via USB, nothing happens. Windows does not see the phone and ADB or fastboot don't see it either. It's not a driver issue, as the computer is still setup from when the computer was rooted and I connect the phone all the time with no problems.
When the phone is off and plugged into USB or the charger, I still get the charging light, though it goes off after about 10 seconds, then comes back on and cycles like that.
Is there anything I can try at this point, or is my phone bricked? It seems like I followed all the steps correctly. Is there an update.zip I can put in the root folder and see if it picks it up?
Any help would be appreciated.

Ok, after rebooting Windows, I was able to get the USB connection to the phone to work in fastboot. It seems I missed the step described in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1508556
which states with S-ON you must flash the boot.img separately. I did that via fastboot and the phone boots into cyanogenmod now.
However, I still seem to have the issue with clockwordmod recovery. As long as I do the recovery functions from rom manager, everything is fine, but when I manually boot into the recovery menu, I get the same behavior of any choice from the menu just blanks the screen except for the CWM logo and nothing happens. I tried reflashing the recovery image using fastboot, but still no go.

This is solved also. Seems on the MT4GS, the trackball is the selection button. The power button appears to only be a back button.
What a thread! Two nicely phrased problem definitions, two well explained solutions, and all from the same guy. Sorry we weren't able to help directly, but you obviously found the answers you needed elsewhere in the forum. And you updated the title as well to show it was solved. Thanks.
