Bricked captivate fixed - Captivate General

Well my captivate is repaired. I didn't think it was possible but Josh Groce of the famed rom in a flash review videos was able to fix it for me.
Price is great and turn around time, atleast for my phone was awesome.
You can find more info at mobiletechreview.com
It is well worth the time it takes to contact him. Chances are if you have bricked your phone he will be able to fix it for you and it's a lot cheaper than buying a new phone.
I can't say enough good things about him and his work, he is a brilliant young man and we should all be thankful that he is a part of the xda community and wants to help people. I don't believe he does it for the money, off he did he would charge alot more than he does.
I hope this helps some of you that are in a bind with your phone, he certainly helped me.
Thanks Josh, for saving my phone.

How did you brick it?

Your phone wasn't bricked if a jig fixed your problem.
P.s. you can't make jigs yourself for $5. That's not buying the supplies at a bulk discount. Takes approximately 1 minute to make when you have everything you need in front of you. So charging 8-10$ is actually a huge profit. Say 3$ Evey minute you work times 60 minutes in an hour. $180 an hour for what equates to monkey work. Not to shabby.
Edit: yes I oversimplified the process and math to exaggerate my opinion. Point remains the same.

I don't think he was talking about a jig. Probably he had to have his flashed.

His videos r helpful. But I would like to know how u bricked it and what he did to unbrick it...did he just gave u a jig? or changed something in the hardware? I am bricking a lot lately...would be great to take his help...

Don't quote me. But I think be is talking about a jtag type flash

Pretty sure it involved a riff box and removing the motherboard. That's the only way to recover a completely bricked phone.

How long did shipping take? I ask because I ordered a jig from him a while ago to have just in case and I ail don't have it...

I was able to get into d/l mode with a jig but it would just shut itself off basically. Josh worked some magic on it for me.
I bricked it going back to stock from cm7. Like a dummy I didn't follow the directions.
It was truly fubared, before it started shutting off I was getting different colored screens. Green, blue, purple, then all black. This happened each time I tried to use odin to flash stock again.
To me his work was well worth it, now I can take this p.o.s atrix back and wait for the sgs2 or infuse to come out.

I shipped it out last fri, he got it yesterday and is shipping it out today. How long ago did you order the jig? I would just ask him about it, he seems like a very nice person. Ill let you know more when I get the phone back, shouldn't take long.

To be honest I'm not 100% sure how he fixed it, I dont really care about that. Just glad I will have it back. Ive tried 3 inspires and then bought an atrix. They may be slightly faster than the captivate but screen quality doesn't come close to me. Maybe my eyes are getting old.
I am pretty sure though that he had to use his jtag box on it, I could be wrong. All I know for sure is that he fixed it and I can't wait to get it back.

i actually had this same brick last night (funny colors mid way through odin and everything). i bricked doing the EXACT same thing that you did, however, i was able to repair it by going into download mode (mine i can hold the volume rockers and put in usb to go to d/l mode, so no need for a jig) downloaded odin 1-click that DG put out (worst 40 minute wait of my life, felt like an eternity) and flashed it back to stock with odin 1-click.

I did try the odin version that dg put out but for some reason no matter what I tried my phone would just shut down. I'm not very tech savvy. I know just enough to get into trouble.
I'm glad you were able to fix yours, I just thought I'd post this for dummies like myself that tinker too much and beak things. Hopefully it will hellp someone.

My thanks goes out to Josh
Now just have to wait for the infuse to come out so I can screw it up too.

How hard is it to brick this device?

I can buy one at a good price that the seller claims will not power on after trying to flash a rom. I know a lot of times one can work there way out of a apparent brick but I do not want to shell out cash for a real brick.

If the phone goes into download mode (volume down when plugging into computer w/ battery out) it can "probably" be recovered. Without knowing what said person flashed its hard to tell for certain. If they flashed firmware for another device, it might be done.
http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/...harge-full-factory-tar-flashing-software.html
That is what you would use to recover it.
Its common to soft brick (recoverable with some work) but one would have to make a serious mistake to hard brick the Charge.

Mine has an "unknown" baseband and will not accept the full ED1 restore method mentioned in the above post. I've tried every suggestion by multiple people.
I'm waiting for someone to post the modem image before I just throw mine away.

Yeah I thought it would more likely be recoverable than not. I know the fascinate was pretty good about that. Maybe I should get it.
If you can get it into Download mode, it can be recovered
Well find out soon enough. I either got a good deal or an expensive brick.
Samsung flashing pst is somewhat confusing to use. I managed to brick my friends phone last night to the point where odin could not connect to the phone but samsung flashing pst did the trick. Make sure you install all the drivers that come with pst and double click on the droid charge after opening samsung flashing pst then click on the sw download button on the left side of the new window. Then follow the directions in the link you posted. If you can access download mode you should easily be able to unbrick good luck I hope you get this fixed
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Welp. I got it and it does not even look like it is pretending to power on under any circumstances.
You know how to go into download mode right? Open Odin, remove the battery in the Charge, plus the USB into your computer & while holding the Down volume rocker plug the Micro-USB into the phone and if done correctly you should see the triangle on your phones screen
Yeah I did that and there were no signs of life and I have done this part before on the fascinate. I guess maybe I will see if Samsung will fix it.

It has finally happened...

I finally managed to do it. I officially bricked my Infuse. No clue how I did it but it's finally borked for good. Cant access download mode when I try nothing happens. Used 4 different computers, 5 different cords and approx 23 different USB slots. 3 different batteries(just incase it was a bad battery) Nothing haha. Infuse is completely dead!.... My backup infuse is pretty messed up as well (screen is cracked all to hell) This happened after I Heimdall'd my phone phone to clean the slate. It booted up, then bootlopped once then just didnt turn on again.
i would try letting it sit with the battery out overnight then giving it a shot again, also try differnt tools like gtg unbrick
also try using a usb jig
(i once messed mine up badly enough that when you put in in download mode it was a black screen with red green and blue dots on it, using gtg unbrick fixed it for me !
fingers crossed that itll come back to life for ya.

The batteries been out for a bit now gonna leave it out and put it in tomorrow see if maybe that does something. If anything theres a couple Infuse 4G's on Craigslist for pretty cheap. And if this one doesnt end up working, I'll throw it up on there for parts, might be useful to someone.
Also I dont have an actuall plan with AT&T so thats a no go haha

screen... i thought i was done for good but i kept trying and one of the times
odin managed to see the device...
even with a completaly black screen it still booted up to "download mode"
even tho i couldnt see that particular screen
i ran odin and it booted up fine

warranty is different than insurance. even if you buy it off contract or from someone else, you should still have the warranty. they provide 1 year for all branded phones. its only been on sale for 11 months so everyone should be under warranty.

If your cracked screen infuse still works then I would just swap out the internals. Should be easy enough. I did it to my wife's phone.. screen cracked and we had an identical backup phone that my daughter played with. Swapped out the boards and all was well.

No power to phone

Now I did search the forums and I didn't find anything thing like I have going on. First a little background. I was an iPhone user since iPhone was iPhone. I decided to try Android and was hooked. I got the SGH-i727. I have been flashing since day one. Well, here's my dilemma. I d/l'd a ROM that I thought was for the Skyrocket, but after I read more carefully and already flashed. It was for a i9000. Everything went fine during the ROM, but after a reboot my phone wont power on. No Lights, no vibration, nothing. I'm not sure if this was the dumbest thing I have done yet or if this is an easy fix. I know I should have read more carefully, but I got excited and couldn't help myself. I was running AOKP CM10 with no problems since the first ROM was out, but I got greedy. I hope some of you geniuses can help. I have taken the SIM, SD, battery out. But too no avail! Thanks guys!
If you flashed a ROM from a different phone, it's more than likely bricked. You try getting into download mode and all that already?
Apparently you didn't read enough, your phone is hard bricked you'll have to pay 50$ to get it repaired through jtag.

Look them up. Think I am going to try to return back to AT&T today and see what they say. I looked up JTAG and it's like 60 when all is said and done. I also contacted Samsung. What are the odds they will repair it. I opened a repair ticket and the guy I talked to said free repair unless it was water damaged. This sucks!
you could say you were upgrading to ICS through kies when the cabled got disconnected in the middle, may work and may not.
You might be not need jtag. Have you looked into a usb jig? You can buy them off of ebay for less then 10 bucks. If your in a hurry and have a spare micro usb cable and are good with your hands you can also make one.

That should force DL mode then from there flash back to stock.
You are hard bricked. The thing the dude above me said doesn't work for hard bricks.
Call ATT if you have warranty and tell them your phone won't turn on this morning and you don't know what's going on.
If you don't have warranty then jtag it.

Thanks for all the help guys. I have had this awesome phone for 5 weeks, so I am passed the 30 day "trial" period ATT allots you, but I think being a customer for about 15 years may pay off. If not JTAG will work, because I think Sammy will charge me because it had been flashed, and thus warranty voided. Will let everyone know of my successes after Monday evening when I attempt the upgrading to ICS and now it's not working thing.
Going back to Apple for a few days is about to kill me.
Do you have AT&T warranty? Wait nvm, you got a 1 warranty so AT&T will replace it free of charge.
Just tell them you were upgrading to ICS thru kies and when your phone went to reboot it didn't turn on. It's been happening for some reason. People call it the UCLF6 brick bug.

I'm not sure how tough Samsung is on this. I had a custom rom on mine, running fine for a month or so. One day, I go to grab my phone off the dresser and it's so hot I can barely hold it. I powered it off, let it cool down, and went to power on and got nothing. I had a jig and tried it to no avail. Finally, I called ATT and told them what happened. They sent a new (well, refurbished) phone, and I sent mine back to ATT. I was so worried they were going to charge me since it was rooted and running a custom rom, and my wife HATES that I flash and just looks for a reason to get me to stop, but I never heard anything else about it. They said on the phone that it sounded like the processor ws fried. You could use that story too.

Bricked, need help!!!

I had CM9 On my rooted Samsung Galaxy S3, and my phone would crash randomly in the middle of changing songs on playerpro or in the middle of phone calls, so I tried to download SiyahKernel hoping it would add some stability to my ROM. Well I had 2 different versions of the kernel somehow. One was SiyahKernel 3.something, and the other was 2.5. I assumed the 3.something would be for the S3 and the 2 something was a false download that I got on accident and was made for the S2 or something, but when I tried to flash the 3.something it didn't work, versus when I tried flashing the 2.5 it installed perfectly fine. So, here's the fun part...when I went to reboot my phone it died COMPLETELY. I can't start the phone in download mode to odin it, can't get into recovery to flash an old nandroid. Phone won't turn on, won't charge, will do absolutely nothing, and I know for sure the battery was charged to 90% when it crapped out. I've done battery pulls, I actually did a 3 hour battery pull at one point...I don't have insurance, and I don't have the $$$ to go buy another phone, so if anyone has some ideas on how I could either get my phone back operational, or a cheaper solution (like a jigg) it would be MUCH appreciated. I wasn't just a noob jumping into it on my S3, I've been rooting, romming, and flashing **** since 2009, and it's my 10th smartphone, but my first brick ever. Please help!
search jtag.
If you can't get into odin mode or recovery then your phone is deffo hard bricked n will be costly to repair mate. Be careful flashing kernels n use odin to do it not recovery mode

This post is ridiculous. Asurion blows, never have had a good experience with them over using 5 phones insured by them. Only ever had 2 crap out on me (hardware-wise. If it was ever software related I did it, and knew exactly how to handle it, but the 2 that were done were spidered screens). They gave me a broken refurbished evo back for the very first phone I ever had that I rooted, rommed, and hacked on for DAYS trying to learn the entire process...all those manhours and they send me a refurbished phone with nothing on it, and a screwed up LCD digitzer...do NOT recommend asurion whatsoever, and will never use them again no matter what carrier I go with.

Why would you use odin to flash a kernel? I use cwm all the time for roms and kernels alike. Odin for radios or to return to stock. Cwm does everything else I need it to do. Same mistake could have been made on a computer guy downloaded two kernels and flashed the wrong one.
OP I am sorry for your loss.

imo insurance fraud is not the right answer. the right thing to do is research then flash, dont flash then research. ofcourse its now standard in america to be bailed out for every mistake we make, so perhaps your right.... I have yet to cave in and accept this kind of mentality.
The profit margins these companies make is ridiculous to begin with. It's not fraud, the only thing that may be considered even close to it is claiming that the phone is missing or damaged beyond repair due to something that was out of your control. Non the less your insurance covers all these avenues twice a year.
In reality, a bricked phone should be covered under insurance, and I'm sure if you have the proper legal knowledge you could argue that further and make them cover it without having to tell a white lie. Insurance is simple, covering a loss. And a loss is technically a brick (that's not open for debate either, that's correct), but there is a loophole they use where they can refuse to honor a claim if they feel to do so (hence modifications).
F that. I pay for insurance, I do my part. Not to mention when I actually signed up for the insurance, I asked the vzw rep if a rooted phone is covered, and his response was exactly this: don't take a chance, smash it up and send it back, or disappear the device.
I do not abuse or condone anything of what I said, I have yet to make a claim, but be assured, if I brick my device after 5 years of carrying ins. I am getting my money's worth out of it.

[Q] Bricked GS3

I've bricked my GS3. I got it rooted, custom recovery installed and bootloader unlocked then proceeded to flash the Foxhound rom. Now after the Foxhound flash, it is completely unresponsive. All I can guess is that I downloaded the wrong version of the rom.
When I plug it in, device manager recognizes it as QHSUSB_DLOAD. searching on this gives very disheartening results.
Is there any hope? I've found some references that certain phones are recoverable if a Linux machine is available to perform the operation. I do use Linux so if something is available, please clue me in.
Thanks,
Quintin

Nope ... I press any button, or combination thereof, and nothing happens. Well, not nothing. If I'm plugged into the computer it dings in recognition of a device being plugged in but there is zip displayed on the screen of the phone.
At this point, I've done enough reading to come to the understanding that the phone is dead ... may as well bury it in the back yard next to the cat for all it matters.

Nope ... I press any button, or combination thereof, and nothing happens. Well, not nothing. If I'm plugged into the computer it dings in recognition of a device being plugged in but there is zip displayed on the screen of the phone.

Yes, I'm guessing so. I ran across it when working with CM last weekend on the Nexus that the GS3 replaced. That was the fist I've worked with ROMs. I knew Foxhound was out of Italy but the light never went on.
Good thing I still have the Nexus.
JTAG is the only fix for the QHSUSB-DLOAD mode. Unless someone has very recently found a way to recovery from it which is doubtful.
Mobiletechvideos.com can fix you up for about $60 (plus shipping I believe) and a couple weeks.

Hey, man ... thanks! Everything I have read about JTAG was that I had to send it back to Verizon but it wold cost me so much that I may as well buy a new one.
Ya know ... when I started out with computers ump-teen years ago, you'd tweek the machine till it was fubar, wipe it and start over. Now you tweek this stuff till it's fubar, fork out a chunk-o-change and don't do it again. They've taken all the joy out of it.
I did the same exact thing about a month and a half ago.
it would make a noise when i plugged into the computer, but couldnt boot into download or recovery. and i also flashed an international version on accident!
Found a guy that does it for 45, and got it back 7 days later. just google brickedmyphone and his is the first link. I tried talking to the mobiletechvideos guy and he didnt respond for about 6 days which is a long time with a bricked phone! Could've been a fluke, but this guy and brickedmyphone got back to me quick and was cheaper than mobiletechvideos. But the fact that he did it quicker than mobiletechvideos for me was because he's not as popular(i think) and lives closer. mobiletechvideos is in texas (as was 60 bucks before shipping) brickedmyphone is in michigan(45 before shipping), michigan being much closer to ohio, i chose him.
whoever you choose, it is well worth the month because it teaches you a very good life lesson to triple check everything before flashing a rom
yay for runon sentences and sounding like a poorly written testimony! oh well :b
good luck mang.
