[Q] does nexus S come in SLCD - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

because there's nothing super about my supposed Super AMOLED screen, i just bout it yesterday and looks very grainy, transitions between blacks and greys isnt awesome at all.. my nexus one was an AMOLED and it look amazing even the Super AMOLED on my brothers vibrant looks better.. any insight?

Yes it could come with a SLCD screen.
Check the model number, NS with SAMOLED screen is labelled GT-I9020 while the SLCD one is the GT-I9023.

You could have a faulty screen. What you describe doesn't sound as a SC-LCD screen neither.
But you can just check the model number. If it says i9023, it is the SC-LCD version, and if it says i9020, it's the S-AMOLED version.

its a 9020 so it may be the screen ima go exchange it see what happens

I wonder what was the issue? as i got a nexus s today and noticed same.

Maybe its on 2.3.3 which makes the screen looked washed out. Root it and flash a rom with the voodoo color fix and then download the voodoo app from market and u can fix the gamma. Once u do that the screen looks awesome.

I agree with above:
[Link] Flash a kernel with the voodoo color drivers and sound
[Link] Download the Voodoo Control app from the market
[Link] Use these settings to tune your colors.
Everything will be amazing, enjoy.

Hi all,
I have a pretty basic (to me) question.
Is there any way to see if my Nexus S is a SAMOLED or SLCD version. It is a US version so normaly speaking should be SAMOLED but...just for the record, can I find it somewhere?

Turn your screen off and look at the reflection in the screen. If it has a purplish tint then you've got a SAMOLED.

Remove back cover and battery. On IMEI label should be written GT-I9020. Thats SAMOLED version
Go to Settings / About and check out the version under Baseband.
9020 - SAMOLED
9023 - SC LCD

it's I9020XXJK8, so must be SAMOLED
thanks a lot

How can I fix the washed out colors on i9023 (SLCD) running 2.3.3?

Hi everyone,
I'm a new Nexus S owner and got the i9023 Super Clear LCD version running 2.3.3. Naturally, I am disappointed that the colors are very washed out compared to my Nexus One also running 2.3.3. They are both some form of LCD technology so why do the colors on my NS look so bad compared to my NO?
I have read that the Voodoo Colors will only work on the i9020 (amoled), so is there another way for me to make the colors look more vibrant like my NO? (or like 2.3.2....but I didn't have a NS back then so I'm not sure what that is supposed to look like)
And please state if the mod requires rooting. My phone is new and not rooted so far.
Thanks in advance.
Wait Washed out colours on i9023?? Mine is on 2.3.3 and my colours are fine :O

Yes, the colors are very washed out when I compare it side by side with my Nexus One on 2.3.3

I can confirm that, colors look extremely muted in comparison to any other LCD. Still, it's better than the oversaturated fireworks of current-gen AMOLEDs.
Have you tried flashing Voodoo (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876132)? It's supposed to fix the washed out colors problem on 2.3.3, then again, maybe the color fix is for i9020s only.
Well I read in the thread that the voodoo colors won't work on a i9023, so I haven't tried it...any other suggestions?

I don't have any problems with my phones colors. I think they look good and natural. And white looks actually white, than in superAMOLED screens. With Galaxy S I had the worst kind of color temperature. So I really love these natural colors of sclcd.
Washed out colors?
The colors of my display are anything but washed out. They are realistic and easy to the eye without being dull or washed out.
No problem with colors here too. Only natural colors.
Took some time to get used to the colours. In fact they also looked like "washed out" to me also - compared to my LG E720 Display.
You will get used to it because the colours are really more natural.
Use a good screen protector! For example the Vikuiti DQC160! A bad one will really wash it out.

[Q] i9020A AMOLED or S-LCD Display?

I just ordered the att band nexus s i9020A and was curious if it has the AMOLED or S-LCD display. It hasn't arrived yet and I just red that some Nexus model have and don't have AMOLED. Just want some info.

That's what I thought originally, but I'm finding specs for the i9020A that say either SLCD or Super AMOLED. I know the i9023 is SLCD & the i9020T is AMOLED. Do you have info that can back up your statement?
Indeed, I also found features mentioning a S-LCD screen, so i don't know.
But why make a LCD version with I9020 reference ?

Good question, it definitely had me crying lol. But I just saw this http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-1023470.html & feel better now. It's has AMOLED. THANK GOD!
That is more logical.
So far, all the Canadian market ones have been AMOLED.
Si si correcto. The phone came and it is amoled.

AFAIK, for all Samsung devices, model numbers i9xx0 come with S-AMOLED display and model numbers i9xx3 come with SC-LCD display.
I've confirmed this with actual hardware:
i9000 vs. i9003
i9020 vs. i9023
I can confirm. I have an I9020a in Canada and it is Super Amoled.

what, how many models does exist? i'm swapping from desire hd, basically because the amoled screen. now i'm worried, i'll need to wait it arrives to check it! =o\\
is possible to point where each model is sold? And for god's sake, why make it with slcd? can't samsung supply its own models?

Actually, no. For an international phone distribution, it's quite hard to get all those up and running with OLED's, because they can't produce as much displays as the number of demands. That's why they've gone with i9023 SCLCD.
Honestly with what Google is doing to samoled display, you'd probably be better off with a s-lcd display ...
My g2 has better colors then my nexus s does now....

You should be shot and killes for a statement like that. But I did notice the Captivate's Samoled is brighter/whiter than our Samsoled screens. It doesn't bother me becauseits easier on my eyes. The Captivate burned my retinas lol.

The Sclcd passes government codes in most countries, amoled does not because it was not made there. Its all about GDP these days. But which model did you buy? Like you, I was thrown off when I foundoit about the models. I almost bought a i9020t for my at&t sim which would have capped me at 2g speeds... I did some research & bought the new Canadian release i9020a which works on at&t 3g bands (with an amoled display!!).

The first problem I have with SAMOLED is that the greys have a red/purple tint in them. The blacks are gorgeous, but the greys are just drab except at full brightness. What I noticed is that in SAMOLED displays, as you reduce the brightness, the colors shift. Greys go to red/purple, whites to to dirty white, etc. The different colors do not change luminosity equally. Some colors stay brighter than others. SCLCD does not have this problem.
The other problem I have with SAMOLED is the PenTile pattern matrix. If you compare the i9020 (SAMOLED) and the i9023 (SCLCD) side-by-side, you will see the difference in the whites. The SAMOLED display has a very visible pattern to it. Also, if you view the Maps app, or any app filled with text, in both, the SCLCD has better readability.
Supposedly the SAMOLED+ displays use a regular RGB matrix, and the second issue should be resolved. But, I still want to see how/if the colors shift as you reduce the brightness of the display.
The only downside I have seen in the SCLCD is that blacks are not black at full brightness. Otherwise, it is superior to the SAMOLED in every other way. Viewing angles are comparable, and readability in sunlight is better with SCLCD IMO.
I wish the Nexus S had some kind of oleophobic coating on the screen. I am constantly wiping the oil off of the display. The Nexus One was better in this regard. I don't know if it had an oleophobic coating, but it was much less susceptible to skin oil, and easier to clean.
There are at least 4 models for Nexus S:
i9020A North American GSM frequencies. SAMOLED display.
i9020T T-Mobile and European GSM frequencies. SAMOLED display. (supposedly for US, UK and Canada only.)
i9023 T-Mobile and European GSM frequencies. SCLCD display. (supposedly for rest of world, though may be sold in US, UK and Canada.)
SPH-D720 Sprint EVDO + WiMAX. SAMOLED display.

No rant intended or anything but your infos are well outdated. Firstly the nexus s samoled version do not have the red/pink tint even on the lowest brightness. This was fixed by Google in the 2.3.3. This was not the only change in colour:hence you can find a lot of users complaining about the colour changes. Secondly, the nexus s do have an oleophobic coating on the screen.

[Q] Buy i9020T or i9023?

Hello everyone,
I've been doing some research about the differences between the i9020T and the i9023 models. So far, the only difference is the fact that the i9020T has SAMOLED vs. SLCD on t he i9023. Is this right? Would the i9023 work on T-Mobile USA's network?
Also, I am considering the SLCD version, since I've one of my coworker's Nexus S and the screen resolution on the SAMOLED is not that great, plus there's some sort of green tint in the colors. Besides that, the contrast is amazing.
So, in terms of resolution and color fidelity, which screen is better?
Sorry for the noob questions here, I am asking so I won't be disappointed and bother you guys even more.
Thank you in advance.
Does anyone care to help?
Resolution on both screens is the same. Other than the screen, there's no difference between the two. As for the color, it can be adjusted using Voodoo color.

Uh.. you must be kidding right? there's a huge difference between Super AMOLED & Super LCD.
I9020T hands down. No debate here. Super AMOLED just looks fantastic.

[Q] Screen Quality

Hi everyone,
It's my first time using a Nexus device.
I just switched from Samsung Galaxy S2.
With the samsung screen, the black is a real black whereas in the Nexus the black shows the backlight of the LCD (or however it is called now) screen so there's this white glow coming out when it supposed to be pure black screen.
I'm not referring to when the phone is off, I'm referring to when it suppose to display pure black background like when using the Daydream clock feature.
I'm not complaining, I'm just trying to understand if this is how it supposed to be
Thanks

It's normal. Use this for awhile and then go back to the s2, I have one too. You'll see how much better this screen is.
I agree that sharpness and colours are amazing on the Nexus but it's not the black colour / contrast I got used to from the S2.
I came from an S3 and I love the screen quality. I can actually see my phone in daylight.

samsung uses samoled screens, the blacks are blacker and the colors are more vivid. but, samoled screens dont show the real colors, they are much more overly saturated. oh, and black.. samoled dont light up pixels for black, thats why it seems blacker.

I could see as well with the S2
Anyway, as I was saying, I'm not complaining or anything... I just didn't know if the black I was expecting to see on the Nexus is about the same as in the S2...
Unfortunately, I must admit that the S2 presented a much deeper black and the Nexus 5 displays white glow rather than black.
IPS != AMOLED
S2 -> AMOLED. That's almost pure blacks and too saturated colours.
N5 -> IPS. In the N5's case, pretty accurate colours, but with background light, cause the tecnology is like that. You're not gonna get black blacks with IPS. The panel is quite a lot better in every other aspect though.
thanks @Molitro
I agree that besides the blacks, this screen is amazing
As others have hinted, only Oled screens can turn their pixels off complely (0nits) and that's why they can do cool things such as active notifications on the Moto X. When looked on head on the black levels of the Nexus 5 IPS screen are quite good compared to other non Oleds. Infact it out right destroys my desktop and laptop Tn displays in that regards.
