Which Root method did you use to root your phone, and did you have any errors while rooting it ? depending on what method you used to root your phone i would suggest asking a question in the method thread used.

I would suggest you download this:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058042
Its a stock, rooted ROM with the latest updates.
Rename it PD98IMG.zip and put on the root of your SD card.
Pull your battery, then replace it...boot into hboot (vol down + Power)...if you're Radio S-Off, it should flash this image and you'll be stock rooted.
Once you get that flashed and loaded...you should have no problems with ROM Manager or SuperUser.
Just be sure you're Radio S-Off and it will say that at the top of your screen when you enter hboot.
It sounds like to me that you didn't load the upgrade ROM using bubby's one click. In other words...you thought you were complete but not quite.

If you want sideloading then download the second option...once this is on your phone you should be able to hear again.
Like I said...I suspect you didn't quite complete the rooting process...or something went wrong.

you can straight download it to the root of your SDcard...but you'll still have to rename it PD98IMG.zip before you can load it through hboot.
If you did bubby's one click...then you should be familiar with this step.

not reboot...boot into the bootloader. Remember this won't work if your not S-off.
Boot into hboot...then let it find and load the PD98IMG.zip.
Then it will ask you to upgrade. Volume up to say yes...then let it do its thing.
Easy as pie....
are you sure you used bubby's one click?
It does this step twice during the process.

There's a sticky at the top of this forum that will answer all that.
Surprise, surprise.
This is what happens when you don't do a little research before trying to do something like this.
All of the advice given to you in those threads went in one ear and out the other.
Seriously, what's your aversion to reading? You're reading these posts answering your questions, right?
I don't mind helping people, with the limited knowledge I've gained here so far, but this is a prime example of why people flame and get pissed at new users.
Now please, go read and try again when you have a basic understanding of your phone.

Lol. If I'm trolling then you're spamming.
The help you seek is in the stickied guide in this section. It's in the faq for the root method you used.
It's in the thread of the root method you used, and 500 trillion other posts that you would discover if you searched.
Now you want people to repeat the same answers, yet again, to you, when you were advised to do some preparation before doing this.
I wouldn't be so bothered if I hadn't seen this one coming a mile away.

I've found some pretty crazy instructions for rooting the Inspire here:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=AT&T_Inspire_4G:_Rooting
I've also seen a few references to a one-click rooter for it as well. I'd prefer to avoid the crazy rooting process listed on the cyanogen wiki if at all possible.
Can anyone suggest a less complicated method, or link me to a one-click if it exists (and works)?
Thanks for any help anyone can give!

+1 for hack kit. A breeze.
Moved to general as not android development.
I used bubby simple root method on my inspire. Being a newbie to the Android platform, I found this method to be easier to understand & perform compared to the hack kit.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA Premium App
The latest version of the ace hack kit, v11, is actually more simplified and easier to perform than the one click method. I actually created my gold card first with the gold card program and the picked up with hack kit by running option 2 and then 3 in the main menu. I then went to the options menu and had it flash the stock radio. Then I just installed my current rom and matching radio thru bootloader. During the process, I saw where the hack kit has the gold card method incorporated that makes it just as easy.

i used simple root. they both are the same method but i found simple to be a breeze more than hackkit.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961406
I liked the fact that with the hack kit the terminal emulater was not required and there were no commands to enter. The only interaction I had to do was enable debugging after each boot. It made it a breeze, but both methods are proven.

+1 for hack kit. Very simple and straightforward. Good Luck!
I used buddy's one click while watching the corresponding video on YouTube. First time rooting and it worked out perfectly. It's amazing how complex it all seemed until I actually started the process; then it all seemed to make a lot of sense. Same goes for installing roms. I was very intimidated until i actually started doing it.

No need to re-root if you're still S-OFF, just install this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16118438#post16118438
It's a PD98IMG type install so you don't need ClockWorkMod recovery--just put it on SD card as "PD98IMG.zip", boot to hboot and follow prompts.
You can also flash CWM recovery as a PD98IMG and then install anything.

I use Linux, so I'm not 100% certain about Macs (though it should be similar). But at least in Linux, it asks for your password because the script uses sudo. It's asking for password of the user currently logged in, so as to give the program administrative rights.

There is another method, the HTCDEV method, which is detailed in the PDF in post #7 in the "need help?" link in my signature (admittedly, a little roundabout). However, be warned that AAHK is above and beyond my recommended option. HTCDEV unlock can be detected, making rooting detectable even after you go back to stock (for warranty purposes). AAHK is completely reversible. It also makes the entire flashing process easier and gives you more ROM choice. For more detail, take a look at that link.
If you have absolutely no way to get your password, I would recommend that you try an Ubuntu LiveCD instead of using your Mac. It will let you run AAHK with sudo.

In short, HTCDEV only lets you flash ACE (Desire HD and Inspire 4G) ROMs, but not ROMs ported from other devices. Also, it adds an additional step to flashing any new ROM (you need to run a fastboot command from your computer with your phone connected). AAHK gives you S-OFF, giving you more complete control over your phone and letting you flash any ROM (including ported ones) without that extra step.

And if i root will i lose everything i have installed?

What website was this? You should really try to use root methods that are developed here on XDA. Just search for your phone in the search, and read through the forums there (although I'm not seeing one for the Acquire). Android Police sometimes has root methods, too.
If you root, you shouldn't lose all of your data, as long as you follow the instructions to the letter. Still, it's a good idea to back up whatever data you can (contacts, pictures, music, etc.) just to be on the safe side.
The transition from jailbreaking iOS to rooting Android can be quite confusing. As an iPod touch owner, I feel your pain. Just take the time to read through everything. Then take the time to reread it again.
I hoped I helped. Welcome to the world of Android!

s-on and s-off is related to the bootloader on your phone. i'd suggest you go to any of the htc threads plus others here on xda and you can get info about everything like rooting, bootloader, flashing custom roms, recovery etc

The terms "rooting," "bootloader," and "flashing" are all related to pretty much any Android device. Rooting is the same as jail breaking - it gives you superuser permissions to your phone's filesystem - but every device has a different method to obtain root (or so I'm told). The bootloader - I think - has something to do with booting up the Android filesystem (but don't quote me on it). Flashing is a way to install tweaks, apps, and themes to your device through a custom recovery, all while the device's file-system still isn't completely activated (kind of like restarting the SpringBoard on an iPhone after changing a theme or installing a tweak from Cydia). Try Googling these terms, that's how I got started.
The thread you mentioned said something about having an unlocked bootloader. You may want to look into that before you try rooting.
I just got off of ten straight hours of work, so I hope this made some kind of sense
