Quick Questions - General Questions and Answers

Hello everyone ive been jailbreaking iPhones for quite some time but im pretty new to Android and rooting.
I got an HTC Acquire and saw in a website that i could root it with the HTC Quick Root that this tool can root any htc phone.
But when I get to the thread it says something about s-on and s-off or something along those lines.
Can someone please explain what this is and tell me how to verify that in my phone?
And if i root will i lose everything i have installed?
Thabks in advance

What website was this? You should really try to use root methods that are developed here on XDA. Just search for your phone in the search, and read through the forums there (although I'm not seeing one for the Acquire). Android Police sometimes has root methods, too.
If you root, you shouldn't lose all of your data, as long as you follow the instructions to the letter. Still, it's a good idea to back up whatever data you can (contacts, pictures, music, etc.) just to be on the safe side.
The transition from jailbreaking iOS to rooting Android can be quite confusing. As an iPod touch owner, I feel your pain. Just take the time to read through everything. Then take the time to reread it again.
I hoped I helped. Welcome to the world of Android!

s-on and s-off is related to the bootloader on your phone. i'd suggest you go to any of the htc threads plus others here on xda and you can get info about everything like rooting, bootloader, flashing custom roms, recovery etc

Is that kind of info tje same for every htc or u mean asking in one of those threads

The terms "rooting," "bootloader," and "flashing" are all related to pretty much any Android device. Rooting is the same as jail breaking - it gives you superuser permissions to your phone's filesystem - but every device has a different method to obtain root (or so I'm told). The bootloader - I think - has something to do with booting up the Android filesystem (but don't quote me on it). Flashing is a way to install tweaks, apps, and themes to your device through a custom recovery, all while the device's file-system still isn't completely activated (kind of like restarting the SpringBoard on an iPhone after changing a theme or installing a tweak from Cydia). Try Googling these terms, that's how I got started.
The thread you mentioned said something about having an unlocked bootloader. You may want to look into that before you try rooting.
I just got off of ten straight hours of work, so I hope this made some kind of sense

Don't call anything Droid unless it is the official name. It is Android Market, Android 2.2, etc.
Look in the Mytouch 4G section of xda in Android Development. It will let you root your device and it includes instructions and download links.
Rooting lets you install custom ROMs (ROM is your phone's operating system), custom recoveries, custom themes, etc. It basically lets you FULLY customize your phone.
If you want to know how to get apps for free, Message me.

Both rooting methods are extremely watered down have you tried downloading either of them?
I am not trying to be rude, but if it is hard to understand, then I would recommend reading more before you root.

Not trying to pile on, but... Seriously?
There's nothing difficult about the guide. The rooting techniques have been simplified as much as possible, for this phone.
Customizing this phone is going to require a little bit of effort on your part, it's not going to root itself.

So I just select one guide from the rooting thread from mudknof*
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
yeah I know how you feel about rooting O/P but I used this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961406 also androidcentral.com is another good site too if you have not been their already.
Also I would look into how to un-root the htc inspire just in case if you want to go back.
I had to watch the video a couple of times but it was not to bad but I do recommend this make sure your updated I know I had to do a wifi update then your good.
But if you have your phone all set up root will rest your phone all over again contacts will be their just if you added or did anything to it. It sucks it took me like 30 mins to set everything back up lol
Ok, I understand rooting gives you access and you have to downgrade your phone for rooting and then get a custom rom to pyt to a rooted current or future version. Am I right?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Well from what I read on roms, roms will give you customs look and some better features I have not added and Roms yet really just wanted to remove bloatware Im still reading about Roms and how to install them...Also I was just reading through the steps about rooting I think by far bubbys root is the easiest way to root.
lol I ask a lot of ?s ha http://forum.androidcentral.com/inspire-rooting-roms-hacks/88094-rom-t-stock-rom-sense-unroot.html
just in case you need it.. Cause I did root back to stock..which now Im thinking about rooting today.. Just cause I dont like the bloatware but which is nice about root it gives unknown sources thats if you DL and app rather then the market place right now I use Side Load Wonder Machine its a pain to go through the pc but unknown allows you to DL 3rd party off a site. but other then having bloatware removed and having unknown sources thats all I did for rooting. Helpful hint is also looking into how to make a back up of your phone just in case something messes up.
Thank you so much for your support everyone... so one final question... what is bloatware?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
bloatware is all the pre install apps and like the blockbuster ATT nav, yelp etc. even though this is for droidX it works the same just copy and past this -----> Droid X Bloatware Removal How To Android 2.2 FroYo <-------- in youtube and its the 1st, or you can use titanium backup Pro to freeze the bloatware which makes the OS of the phone think its not their anymore and you can unfreeze it later if you need it.. over all its to save some memory on the phone..
So how do i save all memory to my sd card before rooting?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
what do you mean memory? like in apps, pics? their is an app called app2Sd in the market https://market.android.com/details?id=com.a0soft.gphone.app2sd&feature=search_result
that may help also heads up if you root you can do a back up with titanium back up and it restore your apps on that half Im not a 100% sure just google it one of the things I miss from my iphone is the itunes for backing up my apps.Still have not found a program thats like itunes for backing up apps fully and add them back if needed.
to bad you can just drag your apps to your Pc and save.. =(
But what will move my pictures and music to the sd card?

They should already be there. The phone stores that kind of stuff on the SD card, because internal storage is limited.

Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
for moving the pic and music I would just move it to your PC and when your doing rooting just transfer them back.
Im about to root my phone again in like 15mins Im using this again

I would suggest you download this:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058042
Its a stock, rooted ROM with the latest updates.
Rename it PD98IMG.zip and put on the root of your SD card.
Pull your battery, then replace it...boot into hboot (vol down + Power)...if you're Radio S-Off, it should flash this image and you'll be stock rooted.
Once you get that flashed and loaded...you should have no problems with ROM Manager or SuperUser.
Just be sure you're Radio S-Off and it will say that at the top of your screen when you enter hboot.
It sounds like to me that you didn't load the upgrade ROM using bubby's one click. In other words...you thought you were complete but not quite.

not reboot...boot into the bootloader. Remember this won't work if your not S-off.

Then it will ask you to upgrade. Volume up to say yes...then let it do its thing.
Easy as pie....

Seriously, what's your aversion to reading? You're reading these posts answering your questions, right?
I don't mind helping people, with the limited knowledge I've gained here so far, but this is a prime example of why people flame and get pissed at new users.

The help you seek is in the stickied guide in this section. It's in the faq for the root method you used.
It's in the thread of the root method you used, and 500 trillion other posts that you would discover if you searched.

Ok....so I followed the thread and re-read it over and over....found the android sdk method as well downloaded the SDK package with eclipse, still following instructions tried to test adb server and making sure phone was recognized

Secondly the moto g is another great decision as its an amazing phone..

IMHO, you should use your phone without making those hacks for a while. You need root if you want to change something really specific on your phone or want to run some really specific apps. The vast majority of people doesn't need any of those.
That said, since you already rooted your phone, you might want to try using Xposed Framework (with gravitybox), Greenify and Titanium Backup. Search for those to see if that is something you might think is useful.

I would read on xda a good bit before attempting to do anything as it's not for the faint hearted but as soon as you have enough knowledge you'll be fine.
I'm the sort of person who likes to root but even I haven't gotten around to unlocking the bootloader on the Moto G yet and I have it a month now, I only use it as a second phone after my HTC One, plus I only use a tablet and not a PC /Laptop so you can't do anything like this on a tablet which frankly I find bizzare given more people use tablets now then desktop computers and laptops but anyway read, read and read more and you'll be fine
