when it's green you're connected to google servers and services (gmail push, backup, etc). When it's grey, you're not. In both cases you still have a connection to the internet/your network.
Been answered many times, please search.

Grey Signal Bar.. In Need of Clarification

i recently updated to 4.0.4 thinking (hoping) this would fix the problem but it has happened twice since... doesn't feel like it is happening as often but i can't sit there and stare at the bars all day either... my preferred network mode is always on cdma... NOT lte/cdma even though i frequently travel to 4g area...
more info:
in our house (non 4g area) my phone sitting next to my gfs rezound she will have 3 bars i will have zero to one but can make clear calls with no problems...
also, is there a program that monitors when we lose data signal so when i go into vzn i can show them the problem... the chances of going in there and showing them grey bars would be slim since it's random
i need some clarification... i see people talk about radio updates and low signal strength... was 4.0.4 supposed to fix this problem or is this a hardware problem and i need to exchange my phone...
there is some talk about bad batches... phones put together in china or korea... has anyone actually clarified this... my phone was manufactured in korea
Grey signar bar indicates that you dont have a connection to Google's servers.
Ok. Why does it go in and out? Is it typical? Is it a nexus problem?
Pretty sure when my phone goes out my gfs phone is fine.
Way to be informative.

I'm fairly sure it isn't constricted to the GNex as I have an HD2 on CM9 with the same 'issue'. However, I've always thought it's in some way related to background data. When this is disabled, the bar is grey, and when it's enabled it's cyan.
So, again, to clarify... Everyone with a gnex is supposed to have this problem and the 4.0.4 isnt going to fix it?
someone mentioned replacing sim card... has anyone else replaced their sim card to fix this problem

[Q] Nexus 5 Tmobile Prepaid - Orange Signal Bars

I've been playing with my Nexus 5 for a few days now. This morning when I woke up and disengaged from the Wifi connection, internet access was ridiculously slow. Google's site took over 10 minutes to fully load. Facebook wasn't working, G+ wasn't working.
I turned on and turned off airplane mode - Nothing. Power cycled the phone - nothing. I pull down the notification bar and I see orange signal bars.

Anyone know what this is?
I eventually fixed the issue by forcing 3G connection, then resetting back to LTE, but this is just weird.
I had this as well, even showing an orange Wi-Fi signal. I'm not sure what was going on at the time.
I'm a regular T-Mobile customer, not pre-paid. It might be the good ole "Not connected to Google Servers" difference that previously were white bars instead of the always-blue. Now that they're white, they may go orange when not connected to the servers?

[Q] Slow to receive text message

Hi,
Just bought a moto g 4g and had it unlocked - not rooted all stock, all seemed fine until I tried a friend's phone to send a number of texts one after the other. Some came through right away as you'd expect but other took between about 30 seconds to 2 mins to appear which shouldn't happen. Not had wifi on but have had data on but it doesn't seem to follow any specific pattern.
Why does this happen and can I do anything about it?
Thanks

When you send a text to a person, or receive a text, that text message is not sent directly to the phone, but rather a service center, which the text received, stored, and then sent off to the recipient. Unless, the messaging app is having issues, locking up, or whatever, everything else has to do with the service center, and the amount of messages being sent in and out could effect the overall time of the message reaching to the other phone. The cell phone tower that is being used could be the issue to with the delay factor, "data wise," my local cell phone tower could have an awesome ping of like 8-15, randomly, but other times, I get a larger ping of up to +800. As long as the messages are being sent to you, within a decent time period, I wouldn't think it would be to much to worry about.

List your issues!

So guys anyone having issues with their phone? List them and if anyone can help resolve it then reply! My list would be:
-Weak wifi signal (even when I am in the room right next to it)
-Weak signal for data
-Phone gets randomly hot
These could possibly be software bugs but thought I list them anyways
So far, I've only noticed that when I go with the Material Black theme, Messaging app randomly will go all black save for contact name at the top with no keyboard. Have to close out the app and re-open. Doesn't happen with my current theme (Vanilla) or stock theme. One other user had this issue as well....however this seems to be something in the theme rather than the phone itself.
Has only gotten relatively hot only once when Amazon Photo decided to back up all my sdcard to the cloud (60+GB of pics n vids which had never backed up from my G4 I took it out of). Took over an hour and phone got pretty warm.
Neither are really an issue for me, as I don't use the Material Black theme any longer, and the photos are already uploaded so no more mass uploads.
Overall loving the phone. Last charge went 30+ hours with good amount of calls & music streaming thru Bluetooth and about 3hr screen on time.
I took it off the charger one day and it got really hot. I left it alone and came back to it and it was too hot to hold. I reset the phone and it fixed whatever the problem was. Other than that I've had no issues so far.

That's probably because of the fact you used the quick charger. Since it's rapidly charging the battery, the battery can be warm to the touch.
I also noticed when I send or reply in a group message it says sending even after the group or individual received the mms. Weird.
Samsung Pay doesn't work, I've tried it over 10 different times.
Phone gets really hot.
The service signal fluctuates from full bars of signal with no internet, to 1 bar of signal with 4G internet that's unusable. (This happens in low signal areas).

Download Crystal.
I've a long house and have access points at each end. The phone stubbornly sticks with one (Asus RT-AC66U) regardless of signal strength. The other is an older TP-Link AP, even when I'm almost on top of it I have to manually switch. Any clues on how to get it to pick the strongest signal? It's a small nit, otherwise this is one of the nicest devices I've ever used, I'm coming off a Nexus 6.
Having a problem with notifications while connected to wifi, as in, I get none.
Once I disconnect, my phone is flooded with all the notifications I've missed.
I've tried changing channels in my router, renaming, switching between 2.4/5GHz, etc, but nothing. Problem persists.
Ideas?
Mine keeps dropping connection and losing 4g also my sd unmounts every 20 minutes im getting ready to throw the thing at the wall.

Which brand SD you using? I know that there seems to be some sort of issue with Samsung cards with this device.
Also, is the tray exactly in correctly? I'm not being condescending, but if you're not careful, it can go in slightly cockeyed(noticeable as the "door" to the sdcard/sim tray will not be flush), which can cause it to not make good connection.
Throwing it at the wall will provide 0.25seconds of "Yes! Take that!" followed by "Um....insurance or replacement is expensive as $h*t" LOL
If you DO choose the "throw it at the wall" option, please video tape it so that we can see the "wall impact resistance" of the device

WiFi calling is off, one of the first settings changes I made as I very rarely make voice calls.
Get really warm for me as well and LTE download is about 50% slower than my previous S6 Edge. I didn't used the new sim card that came with the phone so maybe that's the problem.

I'm getting alot of stuttering when surfing the Web on chrome. Alot of lag (5+ seconds) when browsing pictures in the gallery and in other places. It just stops responding for a couple of seconds. It's getting a little irritating.

Did you download an update for Samsung Pay when you first set it up? You might have to do that before it will work. You should have version 1.7.04.

It does not come with ad blocking, you have to install it from the Play Store. Someone else mentioned Crystal, I'm using Adblock Fast.
