just to update you gps works with google maps on htc-s730 sample and also in the software of the unit it self you can find htc gps software that will show you gps is working and finiding sat signal.
love the unit
but must say bit slow and i hope it s just the sample rom and in the futere it will be better
so does the HTC S730 have GPS built in ?
or do you have to use an external bluetooth gps reciever ?
htc-s730 samplese are shipped
gps is built in !!!
can you confirm this with a source? i cant find anything about built-in-gps on the S730..
htc-s730 samplese are shipped
i cant send a link
but can assure you its in i have it in my hands
Any idea when Orange Uk will get this? I can't wait!
HTC S730 with GPS!!
well pdadb.net and HTC.com use to show that its with GPS but not any more i have found this url ( http://www.coolsmartphone.com/news3075.html )showing orange version..
Mods i am sorry if i break the forum rules by adding the above link..
this will be my dream phone. if it does have gps built in.

just made 2 movies at home in israel and loaded for you all to view that built in is working on sample unit.
hope for all of us on shipped rom too.
thanks
im definately getting this phone now. as long as it has the gps hardware builtin. im sure someone here can enable it to work on the rom. or maybe in the future a rom is released where it is enabled.
the rrp price for this on expansys is £314
hey there motin. could you test it with tomtom navigation software. and post a video if possible

ok i did not make all this to convince you so wait for your shipped version and maybe you will be lucky and get your gps open on the shipped rom
in any case i dont have tom tom to try on the phone.
but i am sure you can fwd it to me . some how
also please look on the screen can you see teh bluetooth icon appering on the today screen ?
The problem will probably be the same as I had with a Nokia 6110 Navigator.
U can install TomTom. It will work fine, but there will be no way to use the internal GPS. At least I could not accomplish this on the Nokia.
U can probably install TT 6.03 on the s730, but u will have to mess around with FakeCursor. For me, personally, This is not a good solution. Too much hassle to use the address lookup.
IF I get the S730, I will probably use TT5.21, with external GPS or maybe internal, with GPS gate. Using Touch/Elf for the moment.
htc-s730
gd day have managed to install the tom tom software today will test and see if the gps is working and will upload a movie for you all.
nice day
htc-s730 gps enabled

I was just looking at the Garmin Mobile™ XT software that works on top of the mobile phone gps, and it lists the HTC s730 as compatible with their mobile software. Looks like a good sign to me.....not sure it is ok to do this or not, so sorry if it is not, but here is the web site for the Garmin software.....
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=11413
thanx for that motin. just need to clarify whether the final products have the GPS hardware in it. and whether it just needs enabling...
kind of similar with the htc trinity.

Where to download Google Maps for TP?

Hi!
Does anybody know from where I can download Google Maps? No, it did not come with the phone. And yes, I know that normally you get it from www.google.com/gmm - except that all I get from there is "Sorry, Google Maps does not work on your HTC TouchDual."
Do you guys get the same message?

To be honest I have never come across anyone who didn't have it installed as stock. Where did you get your TP from?
As for downloading it, you will need to search the forum and see if any one has extracted it from their TP as I assume it is a bespoke build for the software

no, it's a standard build. And there were problems with it on the diamond with it not shuttiong down the GPS properly and rinsing the battery in around 2.5 to 3 hours.
go to www.google.com/gmm using INTERNET EXPLORER and download the latest version!

EU units sold in expansys come without it.
I installed it no problem.
It wasn't pre-installed on mine.

Thanks! That worked. Didn't even occur to me to see if there is IE on this device

I'm not sure, but...
http://www.google.com/gmm/GoogleMaps.CAB
I just directly go to that URL with Opera Mobile (case sensitive!) and download the cab
Is the google maps install on the UK version the full version or still linked to the web?
GPS problem or Google maps problem
Hi!
With IE, I got presumably the latest version, which seems to be 2.2.0.19.
However, I can not lock into satellites at all.
Before that I had found one web-site that hosted an earler version that was very quick to find satellites - it just was missing lot of features like the favorites and was nagging all the time about updates.
So the question is, is this a problem with GM? Or the phone otherwise? Here are my settings:
Windows GPS settings:
GPS program port: COM4
GPS hardware port: (None), Baud rate: 4800
Manage GPS automatically: checked
In Google Maps, I've selected the option to get position through Windows (as opposed to manual setup).
Does anybody know any free program that I can use to check out the GPS functionality preferably in a way that would give some deeper access to functionality - like the traditional satellite view? Thanks in advance!
Forgot some details:
I've run the QuickGPS - hope that is not what is confusing the GPS now as I had just had a update before this latest version of GM?
Google Maps just sits there with "searching for GPS-satellites (0)..." and never advances the count from 0...
DO a search and you will find a thread "testing gps" where you will find a tool for "testing gps"!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=420933
Read the other threads on gps performance!!!!!
YOur first lock on satilites can take upto 20mins, even though you have updated quickgps. You need to be stationary and preferably outside.

Thanks I'll try that tool.
However, I did have older GM installed previously and it found a lock in just a few minutes. Actually GM doesn't even wait 20 min before it shows you a screen that says that it can not get a fix.

I bought mine from Expansys.co.uk and mine came with it, although that was before the price drop so they may be differant units
you got the UK unit, not the EU one, possibly

Yes, 1.90.405.1 is the UK ROM.
Same problem with the set I bought in Singapore, no google map included, and thanks for the IE fix, weird why Opera can't do it though.
Cheers.

2 GPS programmes on one PDA

Hi
I've got an HTC Touch Cruise. Anyone know if I can install two GPS programmes on one PDA?
Would appreciate your input.
Thanks
Brian
Yeah, no problem. You can install them fine.
On some PDAs (Kaiser I think) you can even use them both at the same time polling the same information from the GPS antenna. Other PDAs can't do this without a separate bit of software, can't recall what it's called, but this'll bump you back up to the top and one of the helpful chaps here will contribute.
Thanks Mustang for your input. So there's no problem with special configuring: I don't want to use them together?
shouldn't have a problem. i was based in thailand and i was using powermaps. i then transfered to melbourne where i now use tomtom7. i also had my mapking 7 software installed as i was using maps for malaysia.
so to answer your question, it shouldn'd be a problem.
cheers

If you're not using them at the same time then there is no reason for a problem. You'll need to configure each app to look at the correct com port and baud rate etc if they don't auto detect, but I use Navigon 6, Google Maps, MS Live, and a couple of other GPS apps (dashboards and things) and they all sit quite happily.

GPS For Canals/Rivers in UK

hi,
i am looking for a GPS program that can be used on canals/waterways
can anyone help please?
thanks in advance
What are you wanting to do with the gps program, turn by turn navigation? I doubt that there is anything like that out there.
There are some OS map based programs that might be ok though.

it was for the parents to use in place of maps, my mum has a n1 too and is bang into it at 58!
which map based programs do you think are worth trying?
If you are just talking about canals, wouldn't google maps do the job? Like MrRalphMan said, you won't find a turn by turn for that I wouldn't think but surely google maps shows waterways doesn't it?
I forgot Google maps, that should be ok..
The one I was thinking of is Memory Map, this uses OS maps.
thanks for your help both, especially google maps! didnt cross my mind to check thar prior to asking.

Best offline GPS maps application?

Hey
Im wondering whats the best offline maps applications for Android. Google Maps is no doubt the best but needing a data connection throws me back (I also personally dont have one). Im looking one with navigation in it as well (voice if possible).
Thank you
OSMAND
Try OSMAND from the Market. You can download data for offline use/per country and you only use GPS - no data/internet required. Note: you'll only need internet access to get directions.

Try Copilot or iGO, both are very good as GPS.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA Premium App
Can you guys clarify? Somebody mentioned that you need a data connection for GPS to function altogether. Is this not true?
nice topic, i have a same question too. Is there any apps u dont need to connect to internet to get direction and maps? Just use only GPS
you do need a connection with a simcard for the gps to work quickly yes. i tried my G1 without a sim and it hadnt locked onto my location in over 30 minutes. tried with sim card in and it was almost instant. i think it relies on positioning from the antennas for your phone first then produces a more accurate location with gps.
oh and im trying out navigon on mine

You don't need data plan or internet for GPS if you are using Copilot or IGO. Copilot has offline GPS,which it is similar to any other GPS you buy for electronic store. In Copilot and iGO, all maps are stored in sdcard.

Look up A-GPS.
You do not need a simcard or a data connection to have GPS work.
try MapDroyd im using it most of the time. Their maps is very healful when you are in a City or a well known city but works poor when you are in a province. not recommended for adventure.

cheers man. will have a look for that one later. as far as i knew you didnt need a data plan but did need a simcard in for it to find your location quicker.
Is there any GPS map apps i can use on my G1 that will work as navgon doesnt appear to do so due to no sim card.
good find, thanks for the info

The latest Google Maps automatically cache your viewed maps on your SD card.
You can download a route, both outward and return using google maps, before you leave home on your wifi.
I also use the app 'bluetooth gps provider' and an old tomtom receiver, as the built in gps receiver on my magic is virtually non existant!
I find osmand a bit eratic, but its not a bad back up.
Navigon is a good choice, they claim you only need internet to download your maps and thats it
I'm looking for an app like that too. Ive been using a cracked version of Ndrive and it is pretty cool but it takes like an eternity to load.
Is any if the recommendations works with maps of Israel?
There are plenty of programs, but almost none for Israel.
when i use an offline navigator i select aura sygic... its cool... has a lot of extras...
and you only must to download the maps and mlm file and put it in maps file...
Mapdroid is good. You can try locus free maps too! I've personally used it and its really working good for me!
