Hey
Im wondering whats the best offline maps applications for Android. Google Maps is no doubt the best but needing a data connection throws me back (I also personally dont have one). Im looking one with navigation in it as well (voice if possible).
Thank you
OSMAND
Try OSMAND from the Market. You can download data for offline use/per country and you only use GPS - no data/internet required. Note: you'll only need internet access to get directions.

Try Copilot or iGO, both are very good as GPS.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA Premium App
Can you guys clarify? Somebody mentioned that you need a data connection for GPS to function altogether. Is this not true?
nice topic, i have a same question too. Is there any apps u dont need to connect to internet to get direction and maps? Just use only GPS
you do need a connection with a simcard for the gps to work quickly yes. i tried my G1 without a sim and it hadnt locked onto my location in over 30 minutes. tried with sim card in and it was almost instant. i think it relies on positioning from the antennas for your phone first then produces a more accurate location with gps.
oh and im trying out navigon on mine

You don't need data plan or internet for GPS if you are using Copilot or IGO. Copilot has offline GPS,which it is similar to any other GPS you buy for electronic store. In Copilot and iGO, all maps are stored in sdcard.

Look up A-GPS.
You do not need a simcard or a data connection to have GPS work.
try MapDroyd im using it most of the time. Their maps is very healful when you are in a City or a well known city but works poor when you are in a province. not recommended for adventure.

cheers man. will have a look for that one later. as far as i knew you didnt need a data plan but did need a simcard in for it to find your location quicker.
Is there any GPS map apps i can use on my G1 that will work as navgon doesnt appear to do so due to no sim card.
good find, thanks for the info

The latest Google Maps automatically cache your viewed maps on your SD card.
You can download a route, both outward and return using google maps, before you leave home on your wifi.
I also use the app 'bluetooth gps provider' and an old tomtom receiver, as the built in gps receiver on my magic is virtually non existant!
I find osmand a bit eratic, but its not a bad back up.
Navigon is a good choice, they claim you only need internet to download your maps and thats it
I'm looking for an app like that too. Ive been using a cracked version of Ndrive and it is pretty cool but it takes like an eternity to load.
Is any if the recommendations works with maps of Israel?
There are plenty of programs, but almost none for Israel.
when i use an offline navigator i select aura sygic... its cool... has a lot of extras...
and you only must to download the maps and mlm file and put it in maps file...
Mapdroid is good. You can try locus free maps too! I've personally used it and its really working good for me!

Do you guys get the same message?

To be honest I have never come across anyone who didn't have it installed as stock. Where did you get your TP from?
As for downloading it, you will need to search the forum and see if any one has extracted it from their TP as I assume it is a bespoke build for the software

no, it's a standard build. And there were problems with it on the diamond with it not shuttiong down the GPS properly and rinsing the battery in around 2.5 to 3 hours.
go to www.google.com/gmm using INTERNET EXPLORER and download the latest version!

I just directly go to that URL with Opera Mobile (case sensitive!) and download the cab

GPS problem or Google maps problem
Hi!
With IE, I got presumably the latest version, which seems to be 2.2.0.19.
However, I can not lock into satellites at all.
Before that I had found one web-site that hosted an earler version that was very quick to find satellites - it just was missing lot of features like the favorites and was nagging all the time about updates.
So the question is, is this a problem with GM? Or the phone otherwise? Here are my settings:
Windows GPS settings:
GPS program port: COM4
GPS hardware port: (None), Baud rate: 4800
Manage GPS automatically: checked
In Google Maps, I've selected the option to get position through Windows (as opposed to manual setup).
Does anybody know any free program that I can use to check out the GPS functionality preferably in a way that would give some deeper access to functionality - like the traditional satellite view? Thanks in advance!
Forgot some details:
I've run the QuickGPS - hope that is not what is confusing the GPS now as I had just had a update before this latest version of GM?
Google Maps just sits there with "searching for GPS-satellites (0)..." and never advances the count from 0...
DO a search and you will find a thread "testing gps" where you will find a tool for "testing gps"!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=420933
Read the other threads on gps performance!!!!!
YOur first lock on satilites can take upto 20mins, even though you have updated quickgps. You need to be stationary and preferably outside.

Thanks I'll try that tool.
However, I did have older GM installed previously and it found a lock in just a few minutes. Actually GM doesn't even wait 20 min before it shows you a screen that says that it can not get a fix.

Yes, 1.90.405.1 is the UK ROM.
Same problem with the set I bought in Singapore, no google map included, and thanks for the IE fix, weird why Opera can't do it though.
Cheers.

Dear friends
I am new in the family. and bit lost on all the threads here.
I have an HTC Touch Diamond, and I want to ask, if I can have the Google Maps without connection to internet, meaning use the inbuild GPS device
activated through satellite. Do I need a program or so? Which one?
Very sorry for the inconvenience.
bump
i need to know too. searched forum but can't see any post on it.. could it be used like a standalone gps navigator? those don't have to pay for internet.

Just make sure you have an external memory card to store the maps; if you want your GPS software to work without internet than you need map files saved on your device...
Applications like Google Maps use the internet instead of your storage card, and therefore you need a data connection.
You should move this question to the Touch Diamond Board because you never know if the GPS is incompatible or has errors with your device
hi,
i am looking for a GPS program that can be used on canals/waterways
can anyone help please?
thanks in advance
What are you wanting to do with the gps program, turn by turn navigation? I doubt that there is anything like that out there.
There are some OS map based programs that might be ok though.

it was for the parents to use in place of maps, my mum has a n1 too and is bang into it at 58!
which map based programs do you think are worth trying?
If you are just talking about canals, wouldn't google maps do the job? Like MrRalphMan said, you won't find a turn by turn for that I wouldn't think but surely google maps shows waterways doesn't it?
I forgot Google maps, that should be ok..
The one I was thinking of is Memory Map, this uses OS maps.
thanks for your help both, especially google maps! didnt cross my mind to check thar prior to asking.
I had a BB 9700 until the other day (on orange contract), which came with free orange maps because of the plan im on. however i hav now found that said maps will not work on my htc hd2? wtf?!
Is there any way to either get orange maps to work, or install another satnav app, which wont charge me to use and/or download
Like i said only had the hd2 a couple of days (awesome i might add), so a complete newbie, so keep it simple please!
thanks

Bing?

most HD2s come with IGO and you get a free map, but personally i didnt like it. you could try google maps, which will do navigation but wont do the voice prompted directions (you can download it by going to m.google.com on your phone). i use google maps for walking, and i have garmin mobile xt with the city navigator europe map (which ive just updated ). if you know where to look, you could probably get this for free, but that isnt legal. i dont think thee is a great choice of free solutions. you could talk to orange, and maybe they will give you some money off your bill as the maps service doesnt work on the phone
My hd2 didn't come with igo so where can I get it? Took a quick look around and couldn't really find a clear answer
waze, google maps, bing there are lots...
Legal Free Navigation
Bing Maps has turn-based GPS guidance. So when you reach a turn it will show on the screen. For guidance it's better than Google Maps, but still not as good as TomTom etc.
It's search engine and street views are good.

The answer is within google, sorry I cant mention illegal sites
With the right .cab, map, and keygen, you can get TomTom 7 running on HD2.
I use TT7, as I find it better than the rest.
Would give links, but it is warez.

Hi:
I am kind of regret that I got the HTC Windows 7 phone. Now I can't use any of the old apps like spacetime, tomtom from my windows 6.5 mobile since I won't be able to install the cabs on the Windows 7 phone. This sucks so bad. How could Microsoft do this?
I see that Garmin came out with a Garmin Streetpilot GPS in the market place for $38.99.
I don't want to buy it until I know what I am buying.
Will I be able to use the Garmin Streetpilot GSPS on my HtC surround 7 phone if I don't have 3G/Edge? I don't want to pay $50 for a data plan every month.
Can I download the maps and everything else via wifi and GPS will work on the road since I can't connect to the internet on the road with wifi?
Thanks
No, you cannot download any maps upfront.
Wow. Now I really regretting getting the windows 7 phone. Even if I buy the Garmin Streetpilot, I can't use it if I don't have a data plan for 3G or Edge.
According to this link: blog.gsmarena.com/garmin-streetpilot-now-available-for-windows-phone-7-priced-at-39-99/, it seems you can download maps for your route in advance. i just want to know if you can do it with wifi only when available.
Unfortunately, the application does not come with the maps built-in and they are downloaded on an on-demand basis. But you can download the maps for your route in advance before heading out and if required the application will download the rest over 3G, Wi-Fi or EDGE.
Thanks
Or you can use Navigon
hey,
bud you can you use navigon v3 for you wp7....trust me theres no data charges and you can download any map...just google it....its pretty good!!
Google is not needed - just search xda wp7 forums ("Software development"). All googled info came from here, XDA
This link will help you
Thanks. I have a HTC Surround 7 which is already unlocked when I bought it.
It seems I also need to jailbreak the phone as well inorder to install apps not in the Marketplace. It seems scary since I may damage my phone and cannot use it anymore.

Hi:
I follow the link to install Navigon 3 on wp7.0, I did not add maps or do anything.
I just launch Navigon select afterwards, it started to download some 2GB files from the internet and I don't know what. after the install. I started it again and it says "The use of navigon select' was free of charge for 2 years. This period has expired."
I thought it was free?
Any idea why?
Thanks

You didn't read the directions. It is a hacked version. You need the Android maps & Data files. I just uploaded the data file that work with USA maps in the Navigon 3.0 thread. You need to "find" the maps on your own as discussion of wares is not allowed on XDA. You need to disable data/wifi on the device & run a special server that the creator included with the modified XAP. For more & full instructions, read the thread.
I need the North America Maps. From this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=919612
I need to extract the ipa file to get the maps. How do I do that? What tool?
Thanks
Thanks. I live in Canada and I need Canada maps for Navigon v3. I don't know where to get it.
Any links?

We can not post links for the maps here, as it's considered warez & warez are against XDA terms of service. You'll have to "find" them on your own. Some people have posted hints in different threads. Just look around...
