So i'm currently running rubix focused 2.0.1 and I wanna try some other ones out as well. But they require certain kernels or that you at least be at or above a certain kernel version. My kernel version is 2.6.32.9. So do I have to sbf eveytime I wanna flash a new rom. For example I would like to install darkslide or liberty. What would I have to do to make my phone able to flash one of thoses?

I just got the Captivate yesterday and I'm in love with it. I've been modding my Backflip for a while and I'm fairly certain I know what I'm doing. I've been trying different ROMs and I've currently settled on a rooted stock 2.2 ROM.
I want to change my kernel though, so I put my phone in download mode and flashed the Galaxian kernel via Odin, it finished and then my phone started boot looping. So I one clicked it and tried again with SGS flasher, boot loop. One click restored, tried with CWM, boot loop.
I've also tried Talon, Speedmod, Setiron and a stock kernel with all 3 methods. Nothing will flash without boot looping.
That kernel is designed for reoriented i-9000 roms

What about all of the other ones that were supposedly for 2.2 ROMs?

It needs to be a true captivate 2.2 kernel a lot are i9000's you just need to read the op for whichever kernel you are looking at thoroughly. 90% of the time the dev states if its an i9000 kernel.
The speed mod kernel here, forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893880 SHOULD work just make sure to wipe cache and dalvik cache in recovery after install and it should boot.

You will have to read the description in the first post on the kernel you want to install, and the kernel you were installing was a gingerbread kernel

Yeah. You were trying to install a gingerbread kernel on a froyo ROM. That won't work.
Thanks guys! I think I downloaded the wrong version of SpeedMod the first time, it worked this time. Firstly I didn't know that the difference between i-9000 and i897 meant that much. Secondly, I'm not really sure how to read the kernel topics, they're confusing to say the least :S.
I'll learn sooner or later but thanks for your help everyone.

Yeah some are very confusing the biggest help Is to learn the difference in firmware revision codes. Most captivate roms/kernels begin with k. like kh3, kf1 that sort of thing and from what I remember j is for I9000 eg jv1 etc...

does anyone have or know if theres a lag fix out for froyo?
Just flash a kernel that supports Voodoo, turn Lagos on and you're good to go. Check Rootzwiki for more up-to-date info.

I am new to android and trying to figure things out. I notice a lot of the ROMS say that they don't have a kernel. Do I need to download and flash a kernel as well as a ROM? What would happen if I just flashed a ROM? I was looking at Eclipse and Tweakstock as possible options, but both say they don't come with a kernel. I am running the stock kernel (2.6.35.7-EP4). What would happen if I flashed Eclipse or Tweakstock with the stock kernel? Would it work? If I do need to get another kernel, any suggestions?
Why would you look at Eclipse? It's extremely outdated. Also, TweakStock has a version with a kernel in it.

Eclipse was the only ROM i noticed that said TW4. I wanted to be able to resize widgets and I know u can do that in TW4. As for the Tweakstock, I see now that there r multiple versions, though to be honest i'm kinda not sure which one im supposed to use. I think the last one with the experimental repacked EP4D kernel, but im not entirely sure. Again, I'm new to all this. Been on stupid windows mobile for the past few years, so i apologize if this is "no-brainer" stuff.
if you're on stock then the repack kernel should work fine

some help would be appreciated! or how can i back up my kernel to update.zip? i tried sgs kernel flasher but it is incompatible
Easiest way I would think is to just flash that kernel again right afterwards. Kernels are generic, so none of your personal data is stored on them.
lets say i dont have it now what?
It's not a kernel that you can download from here..?
sadly no
Look in the Dev then sticky then all in one thread you'll find all the kernel's custom and stock I have all them download from there.

unless that kernel was custom made for u by a Dev then its here. If u or someone u know compiled it u wouldn't be asking the question lol. u can back up the kernel using advanced and then flash back after rom install
