[Q] ROMS with no kernel - Verizon Droid Charge

I am new to android and trying to figure things out. I notice a lot of the ROMS say that they don't have a kernel. Do I need to download and flash a kernel as well as a ROM? What would happen if I just flashed a ROM? I was looking at Eclipse and Tweakstock as possible options, but both say they don't come with a kernel. I am running the stock kernel (2.6.35.7-EP4). What would happen if I flashed Eclipse or Tweakstock with the stock kernel? Would it work? If I do need to get another kernel, any suggestions?

Why would you look at Eclipse? It's extremely outdated. Also, TweakStock has a version with a kernel in it.

Eclipse was the only ROM i noticed that said TW4. I wanted to be able to resize widgets and I know u can do that in TW4. As for the Tweakstock, I see now that there r multiple versions, though to be honest i'm kinda not sure which one im supposed to use. I think the last one with the experimental repacked EP4D kernel, but im not entirely sure. Again, I'm new to all this. Been on stupid windows mobile for the past few years, so i apologize if this is "no-brainer" stuff.

if you're on stock then the repack kernel should work fine

ROM flashing Question

So i'm currently running rubix focused 2.0.1 and I wanna try some other ones out as well. But they require certain kernels or that you at least be at or above a certain kernel version. My kernel version is 2.6.32.9. So do I have to sbf eveytime I wanna flash a new rom. For example I would like to install darkslide or liberty. What would I have to do to make my phone able to flash one of thoses?

Okay, so I'm on stock 2.2.1 with root. I've never flashed this phone, but I've flashed some friends different androids for them. I was wondering what the best rom is right now, and anything else that I need to do like kernals or tweaks to make my phone as badass as possible. Can anyone help me?

Valhalla is your best bet.
I believe you need to flash GB bootloaders first as well as honks kernel for GB ROM's. There's plenty of wonderful guides in the dev section. The one by FB is probably the best.
Good luck.
The GB starter guide is ths one he is referring to.
Its all up to you which ROM you want. Miui is pretty hot right now. Valhalla is great and so is audiophile

Kernels: drhonk's Froyo and GB kernels
Tweaks: I think all of the GB ROMs are optimized now. The only tweak for GB is SASv7 beta by dsexton702. As for Froyo, there's a lot more tweaks. ICBINB KD1 has all of them. I'm not sure about Audiophile, although I'm sure it does. Black Ice and Bionix Frost are pretty basic though.
Just be sure to read the Bible. Flashing on this phone is very different.
I love bionix frost. It was so fun to tweak because it is super stable

It was the first ROM I flashed here. That gives it a special place in my heart. ;P

Flashing kernals causes boot loops

I just got the Captivate yesterday and I'm in love with it. I've been modding my Backflip for a while and I'm fairly certain I know what I'm doing. I've been trying different ROMs and I've currently settled on a rooted stock 2.2 ROM.
I want to change my kernel though, so I put my phone in download mode and flashed the Galaxian kernel via Odin, it finished and then my phone started boot looping. So I one clicked it and tried again with SGS flasher, boot loop. One click restored, tried with CWM, boot loop.
I've also tried Talon, Speedmod, Setiron and a stock kernel with all 3 methods. Nothing will flash without boot looping.
That kernel is designed for reoriented i-9000 roms

What about all of the other ones that were supposedly for 2.2 ROMs?

It needs to be a true captivate 2.2 kernel a lot are i9000's you just need to read the op for whichever kernel you are looking at thoroughly. 90% of the time the dev states if its an i9000 kernel.
The speed mod kernel here, forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893880 SHOULD work just make sure to wipe cache and dalvik cache in recovery after install and it should boot.

You will have to read the description in the first post on the kernel you want to install, and the kernel you were installing was a gingerbread kernel

Yeah. You were trying to install a gingerbread kernel on a froyo ROM. That won't work.
Thanks guys! I think I downloaded the wrong version of SpeedMod the first time, it worked this time. Firstly I didn't know that the difference between i-9000 and i897 meant that much. Secondly, I'm not really sure how to read the kernel topics, they're confusing to say the least :S.
I'll learn sooner or later but thanks for your help everyone.

Yeah some are very confusing the biggest help Is to learn the difference in firmware revision codes. Most captivate roms/kernels begin with k. like kh3, kf1 that sort of thing and from what I remember j is for I9000 eg jv1 etc...

new to the droid charge world

recent got a droid charge and was wondering what is the current crowd favorite for ROM/Kernal combinations. on the Fasscinate i've been usings TSM Res/SuperClean with KGB kernal so trying to see what the player picks of choice would be here.
thanks
I'm currently using Imnuts' PBJ kernel and the Eclipse ROM, and I'm loving it
A lot of us like the Eclipse ROM
http://eclipserom.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=82
PBJ kernel is popular as well due to CPU tuning options, although I personally use Imoseyon kernel because it has been more stable for me.

I would choose Eclipse or Tweakstock with PBJ kernel.

I'm also using Eclipse with Imnuts PBJ kernel. Make sure to use one of Imnuts's older kernels to convert to EXT4 before flashing the newest one.
been seeing people saying to flash imo's 4.x kernal for the conversion, then flash the pbj kernal
I've tried all thats available... Keep going back to Tweakstock with experimental kernel.

That's the way most people go. Post a thread in the Q&A if you're not sure about something. There's a lot of knowledgeable here people to help you out.

This. Exactly this.
I was all TweakStock until the new Eclipse came out. I haven't even considered anything else since, and my battery life on PBJ is beyond anything I've ever had on this phone. There's no comparison for me now: Eclipse on PBJ.
Good to know I have considered re-rooting now there are more roms out. Sounds like eclipse is the wary to go.

Kernels what to use and what they do?

Well I'm still fairly new to this and looking to learn a bit more . I am pleased with my current Hellfire 2.1 now I'm looking to exntend my battery life to the best I can and I was told this can be done with kernels, Soo I was hoping I could get some suggestions and anything that could help me out understand this a bit more.
I am currently using some Faux Kernel that came with the current Hellfire phoenix release.
Lot of people say to use Trinity with this Rom but no one says why nor in the xda page of this kernel say much about what it does, I like to be well informed before doing any changes.
also how do you install a kernel just download and install from zip from clockworkmod recovery like everything else? or is there certain steps to it?
First off this should be in the Q&A...

I'm currently testing the trinity kernel, The 1.1ghz one for the better battery. Using hellfire phoenix 2.1 so far its the rom I've enjoyed the most.
Any other kernel that anyone could recommend for the best battery performance I could get I'm pleased with the stock performance of the tegra 2 I have no need for overclocks.
Harsh kernel is the best. Flash it and see for yourself

Morfic's Trinity ELP if your phone can handle it as it varies phone by phone. But I also use Faux123's kernels and they work well enough.

Don't flash it because you're using a GB based ROM...
Harshs kernel is for ICS ROMs...

When choosing a kernel you should first know that they all are, in the most basic sense the same, but have little tweaks that make them all different. I know that the Trinity kernel has the Voodoo sound driver built in that is much better than any other driver. Also when choosing a kernel you need to just try a few and see how stable they are as not all phones are created equal. Some can handle the Trinity kernel and some can't (and same with all others). When you find one that works well with you just stick with it. And, as I like to say, to each his own.
