Will the D2 root method work for D2G? And is there any sort of simple root for the device?

Download Astro from the market, then look for z4 root here on XDA. Yes it works.
I can also confirm z4root works for a permaroot. I've done it twice.
Yep Z4Root for me as well. Never had an issue but....
I use kaspersky Anti Virus and it will report it as a Virus when you try and download it. (Kaspersky is actually is correct as it uses a known technique to get root access that a Virus would use to do it's thing)
But the file itself is safe!
Download it and put it on your SD card and run it.
I make an APK folder on the SD card to keep all these non market downloads nice and organized.
If you should ever flash a new rom you will want to be able to find and re-install them later because they won't re-install automaticially unless you get them from the market otherwise.
Okay! One more question guys.... a tech at the VZW store told me that the D2Gs stock Froyo has pretty much a built in app killer! I think that's bull, but he strongly believed it did? Is this true?

To my understanding all (or maybe just the newest?) versions of Android will close low priority processes when resources get low.

Im pretty sure its only froyo that closes low priority processes.
Yeah, when I read that it said "The Android operating system..." it didnt really elaborate as to what build, so not 100% sure.
Its android 2.2 on the D2G

When you root the D2G -- does it still need to be 'unlocked' if I want to put a SIM in it for overseas travel?
Rooting and unlocking are two completely different things. Rooting has no impact on unlocking.
Rooting and Unlocking
As far as rooting SOC is probably the best and easiest way to go and to get the phone unlocked you can call the Manufacturer or Verizon to get the unlock code. I do a lot of overseas travel with the U.S.Army and they usually give me the unlock code right over the phone when I tell them I'm going overseas for the military. Then you install a SIM card(Not SD Card) from another company into the phone and it will let you input the unlock code. If the unlock code is entered correctly the phone will tell you it has been unlocked. Rooting has no effect on unlocking the phone.

Seriously, put a little effort into searching this forum. Look at one of the other android forums. If you don't know why you would want to root your phone, then you don't need to do it.
That's the problem, all the search comes out different. That's why I am asking on here cuz nothing comes out right. You don't have to be mean or even post on here if You didn't like to hear it. I just want the real opinion and all those opinions will summerize.

Here's the things I've done since I rooted:
To get rid of the ATT apps (this one is important because they launch for no reason).
To sideload apps right from the phone.
To change the appearance.
To really "own" my phone.
I really don't know beyond that. I guess if you're fine without rooting it then don't. I used it happily for 2 weeks without root, but I couldnt stand the invasive launching ATT bloat.
What about the update, if its rooted, can I still get in air update?

Hi all,
I'm going to be getting an HTC Evo Shift from someone, which I think has Android 2.2 Froyo on it.
The phone was reported lost and a replacement obtained, then after getting the replacement the old phone was found.... but Sprint said they had written it off, and didn't want the old one back. The ESN remains blocked on Sprint because of this, but they won't unblock it and just said they didn't want it.
Soooo, I'm going to use it as a WiFi only device... but I'd really like to get Gingerbread 2.3 onto it somehow... which I'm assuming can't be done OTA if the ESN is blocked on the Sprint network?
Also, I'm in Canada so once I get it, I won't have access to the Sprint network at all.... and I don't know if the update can be downloaded and installed manually through the computer or what. Anyone know?
I heard the Evo Shift can be rooted as well, but that sounds very complicated to me... so I'm still figuring out what my options are with regards to getting the software as updated as possible.
Any advice would be appreciated
id personally recommend reading up on how to root your fone..
and once you get that going...
you can just install a diff rom that has 2.3 on it..
=D
hey
I did a bit of reading on rooting bit it seems like its different for all devices and some are "one click" solutions while others are multi-step instructions full of unfamilliar terms and procedures which could ruin the phone. lol
I did read some instructions that pertained to the Evo Shift, but there was much involved that my brain shut off after reading the first few steps.
I was really hoping for something simple. but that might be a pipe dream, eh?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-976605.html
Looks like the simplest root method for the shift. I haven't tried it, but since it is on xda good chance it is well supported.

Thanks for the link.
Still sounds scary... but I'll finish reading the rest of the discussion later and see what others ultimately had to say about it.
Still open to comments from others too if anyone has any.
I dont have the phone yet, I'm just getting prepared so I can get to work updating it as soon as it arrives.
Easy and fast root method

The link that was posted would be the easiest for someone but the perm root instructions that are stickied in the development section is what I have used many times on my shift and my girls shift when I root, you can do it either from the pc or from terminal on your phone just have to make sure the commands are exact so I would say just use the pc and copy from the root instructions and paste in command prompt. There are a few gingerbread ROMS to choose from 2 are stock, one is newkidds the other is X99s ROM, then there is MikShiFted-G which is a very optimized and snappy GB, and last there is Elite v1.2 over on themikmik which is based off MikShifted-G but has carousel Rosie and 3D widgets, whatever you do don't try the ota if it goes through you will be stuck with a OS that hasn't been rooted yet

Thanks for the replies guys.
I might give it a shot when it arrives.
There is a lot more I need to look into first.
I've seen lots of people say that if a CDMA phone has a carrier blocked ESN, that you can flash another carriers ROM onto it and activate it with them. I think Cricket Wireless or Boost Mobile was mentioned, but I can't remember.
Here in Canada, Bell still runs CDMA but they will NOT allow a non-Bell CDMA phone to be connected to their network, under any circumstances. HSPA/GSM they will though.
It I could flash the ROM to a carrier other than Sprint, that might be a good idea. That way the thing can potentially have some value as a phone too, and maybe serve me as a roaming device when I travel to the US. Or, would just installing one of the third party ROM's allow it to be activated on another carrier?
I'm really not familliar with the way the US carriers operate.
I want to learn how to do it, if it is possible
It should be possible if you flash radio and hboot from some unlocked O3D...or if LG give us some new radio/hboot with Gingerbread update
Ok, thanks for the info. I guess I'll wait for some time, I'm not in a hurry anyway...
I'm considering buying this phone but have no clue how I can unlock it so I can use a different carrier. I'd like to make sure I can unlock the phone before I buy it.
Is there any information on unlocking the phone yet? I found lots of rooting topics but this is the only unlocking topic I've found.
Look at this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186406

It seems I can't make a post on that topic as I'm too new and that's in the developer section.
It seems a lot of people are having issues with that guide and I'm too new to this to dare risking doing something with an incomplete guide.
I'm still trying to make sense of some things. I read a lot of things on how to root, but I haven't gotten a clear idea what things like ClockWorkMod is, or Romloader, or so forth.
I'm trying to get all my information before buying the phone so I can set it up with my carrier. I want to make sure I can root and unlock the phone before I get it. Also I'm trying to find information on how to back up or factory reset it if need be.
Hi,
The procedure http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186406 is complete and it works with xp. People are problems with windows 7.
Now if you're not clear on the terms I can give you a link that will explain a few terms used.
http://durgeshbhat.wordpress.com/2011/07/26/custom-rom-android-device-flash-clockwork-where-do-i-start/
For "root" You're lucky to start with the lg optimus 3d ... the bootloader is not locked.
What mean you can root in one click with the right program for your pc.
"SuperOneClick"
For "recovery Mod" clockworksmod 4.0.0.9 you will have to install the "RomManager" apk on your phone. It is available on Android Market.
For "Custom ROM and Debrand" ... Come back here when you have the phone and you'll be ready for the first two steps ... I help you if you need it !
Thanks very much for the reply.
So just to make clear your tutorial at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186406
This will debrand/unlock sim correct?
I want to make sure it will work with MTS (Manitoba Telephone Service) as a carrier.
To what I understand Clockworksmod is used for making backups and there's another one called Titanium for backing up apps and data right?
I think I'm starting to get the idea of how to do this. The ROMs part still eludes me but there's that RomManger I'm curious about too.
I have experience with other devices. I've so far flashed a PAP2 adapter, Ipod color (classic), Linksys router, and a couple of other odds and ends. It seems smart phones are a very different thing though.
Has there been any issues with the phone's 3D ability and any modding? Oddly this phone has better specs than most other phones I've looked at yet it's much cheaper than other phones too. It's actually cheaper than the Nexus S, HTC Desire, and Galaxy S II, but seems to have better specifications.
Yes it Debrand/unlock service operator.
Clockworksmod made a "backup Nandroid" that is a sort of backup of your system with all setting and applications.
Titanium backup is primarily used for backup and restore applications (. Apk)
But can also remove applications system.
Since you have experience with other devices ...
The ROM is the OS of the machine.
You can cook this ROM to make it faster, other original applications, another look ... and so.
How, and at what point do I enter in the APN settings on the phone so I can use my carrier? These needed to be manually entered on a friend's phone but I wasn't present to see how he did it.
Where do you go to enter these settings?
After you are flash . KDZ
The phone is "sim free".
So you can put any sim card it.
This is not true, it is not network sim unlocked. I wasted an entire night doing this to find out the sim is still locked
No way to sim unlock free?

Anyways, just contact your service provider. They can give you the code. Just say you're going out of the country or something.
Hello, I have a Motorola Droid X, and was wondering if it was worth while to root it. My dad has a rooted phone, and I kind of think it's cool some if the stuff you can do. But, I don't think I totally understand rooting yet.
So because if this I'm wondering if there is anything that makes it worth rooting ? I've also seen some of the custom themes and stuff that you can get on a rooted phone. Do those make your battery life a lot shorter?
Thanks for any help I can get

If root isn't worth it for you (depending on apps you are using and if you are a developer), then at least a custom recovery is. Making backups is quite an obsession, but can save u weeks of work.

What exactly is a custom recovery? Sorry I'm really new to this kind of stuff. I didn't even know you could change the homescreen until today and no, I'm definitely not a developer

- Make screenshots.
- Run a firewall to keep apps offline that don't need internet but use it anyway.
- Control app permissions.
- Block ads.
- Tether your internet, even if your carrier doesn't support it.
- Make full backups of your data, apps,, and settings.
- Auto-sync your clock with a time server.
- Undervolt for longer battery life, overclock to make your phone faster.
And much more.

I'd say YES! Personally its the Best thing I've ever done with my phone! Here's a few Incentives...
1.) Wireless Tether
2.) Increased Cpu Speed
3.) Better Battery Life
4.) Nandroid Backup
(Which basically Allows you to Fix Anything you may of messed up)
5.) New Custom Roms!!!
hi all, me to very new to this forum, and thought of asking questions regarding , what is rooting and what are the +vs of it. I get most from above replies thank you all for that, i have few more question.
1.) Does rooted phone UI will be stock version ?
2.) what may be possible -vs / disadvantages of rooting?
3.)what are Custom Roms, i see in many threads - yup am completely noob

i suck at explaining things.
in your case you will be using a bootstrapper (just think of it as a custom recovery system, dont get confused)
once you learn and read more and see the benefits then you can decide if rooting is an option you want.

1) Yes. Rooting gives you access to the system files and folders. It doesn't change anything else, unless you start changing things after you've rooted your phone.
2) Plenty of advantages. The only disadvantage is that rooted phones are not covered by warranty. You can get your warranty back by unrooting, but if something on your phones breaks that prevents you from unrooting you're out of luck.
3) Modified versions of Android. It's a bit like all the different versions of Linux for computers.
Definitely the best thing I have ever done to my Fascinate!
Thank you rogier666..
you explained everything...
Defiantly i want to root... But before that i guess i should do bit research on which version i should use O

Unbelievably worth it in my opinion!
It opens up a whole new world of possibilities and fine tuning. In addition to this, you can often talk to the people who develop some of the custom roms/features and receive direct support. Also, this scale of developing usually means any problems are corrected within a week (instead of within 4-6 months from the manufacturer). Having the ability to make nandroid backups (think of them as save states) is yet another wonderful feature.
Happy rooting!

No your battery life will not be shorter if you flash the correct way, make sure you have it fully charged then flash. After this you drain it all the way and then charge it all the way. Do it again (twice) then boot into recovery and wipe battery stats. I think this is correct, I may have the steps switched around and someone correct me if i am wrong. Overall, many custom roms actually give you better battery life.
To Root or Not To Root, That is the Question
The decision to root your phone is highly dependent on your personality and background.
For example, many people "just want it to work." This basically means that they don't care how it works, they just want to use the device as-advertised. They expect the device to give them what they pay for. Their priorities are elsewhere.
This gets a little more complicated because rooting is basically tearing down a wall that is hiding additional functionality. The complication comes from the person knowing the extra functionality is behind that wall and finding value in that extra functionality. The question of whether rooting is "useful" depends on how much value the person puts on that addition functionality (minus the potential headache of figuring out to root).
An example is tethering to access the internet with a laptop by connecting to the phone via wifi, USB, or other means. For tethering, service providers charge about $20-$30 which can be gotten for free with rooting + the appropriate apps. That's an obvious value. The cost is when the service provider decides to try to block that tethering which can be a headache trying to circumvent. There are also the moral implications...
Other reasons may be to
- learn the unknown -- who knows, you might try to make an app to do what you want to do and get paid. you could dig into the kernel and become an expert, you could start creating themes and become skilled at visual/UI design.
- control the bull$#!^ that your service provider is trying to feed you (media, ads, pay apps, etc). remove all those junk apps that they force upon you too.
- impress the ladies -- seriously, if you can get them facegoogle+ in a car on a road trip they may nod a googlyface in the future. nerd girls get their own by definition, don't try, just belong.

My opinion is it depends on the particular device and what the root consists of. I have an Inspire 4G that I won't root because it just works too well as is and the root process is super-duper ugly and convoluted. However, I also have a Nexus S and, although it works perfectly fine without rooting, I have it root because the rooting process is simple and straightforward and the bootloader is open to being unlocked by a normal means rather than an ugly hack. And I only use root on my Nexus S to use certain apps that require root. I don't flash any other ROMs and I even allowed it to return to the original recovery image. Also I relocked the bootloader.
The only difference between my Nexus S and it's original state is the super-simple root. In fact, the only way to tell my Nexus S is different is to run an app that requires root. The app will work on mine and not on the original.
I wil do it olsow

I'd say app like root keeper has feature for temporary unroot (though I have not validated this) which may address your concern partially.
All the top developers are furiously working on unlocking the bootloader (including bounty, free my bootloader online campaign) but otherwise though even I have this query (but honestly there seems no good reason to unroot), I am sitting tight for the good news after which it'll be all split wide open.
What I am perplexed is we see each & every system being hacked but despite intensely talented developer pool how this one bootloader unlock is elusive (with the unlock bootloader available for certain Moto phones officially, I'm sure it is only a matter of time until all hear the biggie, waitin!)
