[Q] I can't tell if my phone's rooted - General Questions and Answers

After an hour searching Google, I came across z4root on these forums, which said it could one-click root my Samsung Acclaim. So I sideloaded it and let it do its permanent root magic. It rebooted with a Superuser app installed, so I assumed it was rooted. I downloaded a terminal emulator app to check this (I looked it up and it said that if you type in su and get #, you're golden) and it said PERMISSION DENIED.
Uhm... ok? I don't know for sure if I have root access. There's still a permanent root and unroot button on my z4root interface, should I try hitting those again?

Download root checker from the market. You might need to install busybox for some root apps to work.

busybox should install with z4 it did on my captivate and superoneclick is good also and it installs busybox also!

Alright, so I tried Root Checker and it says that I'm not rooted when I try "Permanent Root" but it works when I try "Temporary Root." What else could I do to achieve root? Also, it says I'm low on space suddenly.

Try using z4root.

Rooting Samsungs
sdx developers website has some info regarding rooting the acclaim. My advice is to dump any Samsung phone and go with an LG or HTC device. they are much more friendly when it comes to rooting and ROM development.

Looking into that, but I can't exactly dump my Acclaim.
EDIT: SDX Developers guide worked! I've got full root access. Now I'm off to install a ROM. Thanks!

No Problem! Glad to have helped!

try to use a app that need root such as root explorer
or using adb shell su

So I have an SE X10 which I rooted with superonechick which is supposed to have rooted and dl busybox onto my phone. Now what exactly is busybox for and how do I find out if my phone is actually rooted? I know there's somewhere in my phone that I type su and it tells me but I can't remember where to go
And now root checker is saying that I'm not rooted but I have busybox. Which is funny cos when I go to busybox it says that I'm rooted but it's not installed.

Download terminal emulator from market and type in su and got the arrow on KB. If you get a #sign and says terminal emulator has been granted suoeruser permissions you are rooted

If your phone is rooted you will have a su user program. It either will be a skull and cross bones or a ninja holding a sniper rifle as the icon

[Q] z4root not rooting on Droid2

I've downoaded z4root, busybox, terminal and titanium backup.
z4root announces that I've accomplished a temporary root.
Busybox and Titanium Backup says I'm not rooted.
At the terminal prompt, when I enter "su" then it says I don't have permissions.
I'm convinced I'm not being rooted.
I've prowled the forums and don't see where I'm going wrong. I hesitate to try the permanent rooting method, until I see there are no problems with the temporary root.
Froyo 2.2
USB cable off
USB debugging checked
Unknown sources checked
If I do run busybox installer, it does say "BusyBox was not found!" However, when I initially ran z4root, I went the route of 'problem' and it installed BusyBox. I can see it in my list of installed applications
I'd appreciate any troubleshooting guidance.
Thanks in advance,
Andrew
PS. I'm also open to trying Universal Androot or another temporary method, but I'm not finding consistent information or a reliable download source.
If you are on Froyo 2.2.1? you might want to try SuperOneClick root instead.
Thank you. I read where others had a problem with a temporary root but not with the permanent root. I went ahead and tried the permanent. It worked without a hitch.
Thanks again,
Andrew

Root or unroot

How can I know my phoone is root or unroot? After I root my phone, what should I do next? I am newbie to Android. Please help me.
GET RID OF BLOAT IF YOU HAVE ANY! DID U GET SUPERUSER PERMISSION WHEN YOU ROOTED? TRY SOME ROOT APPS IN THE MARKET . WHAT KIND OF PHONE IS IT?
Yes.My phone is sony x 8 and I root with superoneclick but I can't see superuser
in menu.How can I do?
i blve there is a app in the market that will check for root but im not sure of the name! i use superoneclick also and it showed up in the app drawer after reboot
download terminal emulator.
then open the app and type: SU
if u get asked for root permission, allow it.
then u should have a # instead of a $ in the terminal, if thats all the case, u are rooted, if not, the root failed
You can download root checker from the market, it will tell you if you're rooted and if busybox is installed. Superuser should be in your app drawer if you are rooted.
But why would you root if you don't know what it does, the benefits of rooting, and what you hope to get from rooting?
Educate yourself. Read the forums and anything you can find before making any system changes. Then, when you're comfortable, flash a rom.
I use Z4Root on mine. Allows perm root as well as temporary root if needed.

Android is rooted, but every app thinks its not!

Please Help!
(b4 I start, I have searched everywhere!)
I am running 2.1 eclair.
The issue is that I rooted my device with z4root. I have reset the device. And verified that I am rooted, I can see the superuser app.
The issue is that root explorer doesn't show the mount r/w button. So I did some searching which suggested that I download busy box. Busybox says that I am not rooted! Further, android ins't asking me if I want to allow these apps root access.
What can be done?
afaik z4root is for froyo
try universal androot (or search another method up on google)

Just installing the super user app from play store doesn't root your phone.
SuperUser app only manages root permissions. It itself does not root the phone. Head over to your xda section and read there how to root your phone .

Like I've said I have already rooted my phone using motochopper. That's not the problem. The problem is not getting super user updated

Did you follow the official rooting procedure as given in your xda forum? Because if your phone is rooted then you won't face any problem related to SuperUser app and updating binary and all these stuffs.
I've had the same problem as listed above.

Root checker says I have root but apps can't gain root access.

Hello I have an unusual problem. I am modifying the ROM for my Rockchip device (rk3066). I want the firmware image to flash already rooted. I have installed busy box, su binary, and Superuser.apk. When I flash the ROM then use Rootchecker, it says I have root access. However, when I use an app that requires root it cannot gain root access. Can anyone explain to me what is going wrong?
Please be very basic in any explanation as I am a super noob trying to learn.
Thanks in advance for any help given. It will be very appreciated.

There might be something wrong with the superuser app itself. Try using SuperSU.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
Does it work?
Basically you need to tick "prompt", if you had ticked "deny for all" , superuser will not prompt you for answer when an app needs root, so have it on "prompt" in super user settings, If superuser or SU icon is in apps drawer , open it and check its settings menu.
How to get Root Access?
a) Update SU Binaries, reboot
b) Check Development Option for Root Access settings or Performance settings for Superuser Settings
c) Flash Super Su Zip in Recovery

install supersu
So I tried updating the su binary from the superuser app. It says it installed OK but then says it can't gain root access.
I also tried using Supersu app. It says that there is no su binary installed. But, it definitely is there.
I also tried simple root checker. It verified that busy box is installed.
If you have a recovery installed unroot and reflash the binary n app

I appreciate all the input, but I think this is going off point. I have no trouble routing my tablet with the told that are out there. I can't build it into a complete ROM. I am trying to build a custom ROM
with the root built in.
