I have and HTC evo and I tried to root it following the guide i found at gizmodo that claimed to be idiot proof, but apparently its not. I followed all the steps exactly as it said but after step 22 i could not reboot my phone to normal.
when i boot it using the power button, it gets stuck on the white screen that says htc evo 4G, but doesnt go any further no matter how long I wait.
I can still get into the boot menu. I ran the PC36IMG.zip and i came back with three errors. it bypassed the bootloader, it came back with Fail-PU on the Radio_V2, it skipped the first TP and after sometime Bypassed the second. Also, at the bottom it displayed the message: Partition update fail! Update Fail!
After this, when i try to reboot, it brings me back to the same white screen displaying htc evo 4G.
please help as much as possible, i really need my phone for work and school as soon as possible.
-thanks in advance

Hello all,
I am kinda of new to the flashing of phones. Have been reading post and tutorials for three days now, have looked at countless pages containing instructions and videos on how to flash my HD2 over to Android. I have gotten as far as the HSPL4. Now I more or less have a brick waiting for an Android Rom. I was once on a page listing different roms with their known issues, as well as other details (have yet to be able to find that page again), I also understand that this question I am about to ask will have biased answers, but I am only trying to get some help in determining the best option for me when it comes to rom selection. The features I am most looking for is the availability to use most if not all android apps, download them from the marketplace, make and receive calls, surf the web, take pictures, take pictures, send and receive text/picture messages, play a few games, read the news, and the phone to recognize when I turn the thing sideways. Now I did notice that some roms have the detail of Sence:NO , I am taking that as meaning it does not have the HTC Sence included in the build? Am I misreading that? I thank all of you for your help, understanding , and patience with a noob. Thanks again in advance for all of your help.
Oh also now that I have the HSPL installed I am only getting the tri-colored screen. I have tried multiple times to restart and hold down the Volume Button when i turn it on and it still only goes to the tri-colored screen. Have I broken my phone?
Ok, I have let this thing sit for 3 days attempting to make connection with the phone and install HD2_Core_Droid_Desire_HD_V1.5_NAND_ONLY_LEO1024_TMOUS. I still am unable to get anywhere except the tmobile splash screen or the tri-colored screen. I have attempted to reinstall to the HSPL, with no luck. The following error is the error i received after 3 days of scanning:
An error has occurred
Read below for more information
Error Description: USB init failed
Info: .\RSPL\RSPL.cpp (736)
I am also getting the error

when i attempt to install DFT Android flasher for HTC LEO
Any help would be gladly appreciated as I think I may have bricked my phone.
You do know you have to install MAGLDR after you have HSPL? If you have and you're getting that error - go to ActiveSync on your PC and untick 'Allow USB Connections'. Then try run the .daf again.
and make sure that you flash a current compatible radio BEFORE flashing magldr, or it will not work.
I am getting the 100% complete once I complete the MAGLDR113, and the phone restarts and stays on the T-Mobile splash screen.
Ok I mistated... I am not getting this to actually work.
You're using the RomUpdateUtility to flash MAGLDR right? Have you held down the power button while booting up to try get in to MAGLDR?
About the radio thing,
IF YOU HAVE A T-MOBILE USA phone (T-mobile at the top of the phone) make sure you never flash anything that has a 2.XX.51.XX as it will brick your phone.
Ok so far I have completed the Radio update (version 2.15.50.14). I have also completed the HSPL4 - 3.03.HSPL. Now I am stuck on the MAGLDR update. I have tried 113 as well as 110. Niether is working. I can still only get to the tri-colored screen. I have tried multiple times by removing the battery holding the volume down key, holding the power button, or both at the same time with the recult, either the tri-colored screen(vol. down, or vol. down and the power button, the power button alone boots to the TMO splash screen and just sticks there). I am very appriceative to all who have attempted to help. I am presently looking for a new MAGLDR to download and attempt again.
I completed the install of HD2_Core_Droid_Desire_HD_V1.5_NAND_ONLY_LEO1024_TMOUS and this is the message I received on the program window:
Congratulations! Installation successfully completed.
But then when the phone reboots I get the screen that states
aMAGLDR V1.13
Build: Feb 1 2011 03:46:07by Cotulla 2011--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Boot Android from NAND
Android load at 11800000
from NAND
yaffs2 part is /boot
Load zImage
NAND kernel failed to open
But out of all of this I am atleast able to get to the bootloader screen with the 12 options. so I am hoping we are almost home with this operation. Once again thank you for your help.
The NAND kernel is just an error because it might not of flashed correctly. Go to the USB Flasher option in MAGLDR and then run the .daf file on PC. It should flash and restart and boot to Android.
I wanna know how though, how did you flash MAGLDR with HSPL 3.03? You're supposed to flash 2.08.HSPL from the HSPL4 drop down menu.
your guess is as good as mine I have become so lost reading posts doing this doing that..lol this has become harder than writing a prog in c#..(as to how i got 3.03 to install)
Thanks to all who have helped... I have completed the install after reinstalling the ROM...
Has bought from the USA of HTC Inspite 4g (AT&T). Wanted to receive Root, S-OFF, Rom manager with ClockworkMod. Has started to do to change an insertion. Has received goldcard. After an overload phone has started to change an insertion. This process proceeded 2 hours (in the end of process there was a black screen). I have decided to overload phone. Has stopped process. After that problems have begun. Root, S-OFF, Clockworkmod I have received. But after reboot of phone it does not work about 10 minutes. 5 minutes at it absolutely black screen, then the white screen with an inscription of HTC simultaneously work 3 minutes the motor, loading of 2 minutes then begins. Process of switching-on or reboot of phone proceeds 10 minutes. Tried to replace an insertion once again. After that changes nothing. Did before setting of an insertion full surep wipe. It has not helped. I still have a problem. I want to enter into engineering menu HBOOT. I push down+power. I wait for 5 minutes (phone so is overloaded). I enter in HBOOT, but thus buttons (volume up and down, power) any more do not work. As to me to receive normal phone. I can not HBOOT make in it recovery. Where to me to take for HTC INspire 4G (AT&T) PD98IMG.zip. Also help me with the instruction. How to apply this file in RECOVERY.
I'm having a hard time with your English (or is it just fed into google translate?).
It looks like you installed the ENG hboot on a later model device that is incompatible.
You need to get it to boot (it will eventually) and put the newer hboot back on it. You can do this through ADB from a console. Here are the instructions:

@ Gene Poole
I had a hard time with his English too, but I understand exactly what he is saying because I did the same thing. I will try to re-explain it and hopefully someone can help us out.
In a nutshell, it sounds like we both flashed an Engineering HBoot starting with a stock US ATT Inspire 4G that came with Gingerbread. Specifically, what I did was I followed a guide on Cyanogenmod's wiki for the Inspire 4G which gave direction to downgrade to Froyo, root, and setup to use eng hboot. This apparently was a huge mistake. After the downgrade, when rebooting or powering on the phone, nothing would happen for a long time (black screen for 5 - 10 minutes, i.e. phone was off), then, screen would turn on with white background and HTC logo and phone would vibrate non-stop for several minutes, and eventually, phone would turn on. After the downgrade and making it to the home screen, I copied CM7 zip on to the SD card and rebooted into recovery via adb. Same exact weird process happened with phone being off for several minutes, then vibrating, then eventually i made it to cwm recovery. After installing CM7 and rebooting, same crazy startup process and made it into CM7 home screen.
I was hoping once CM7 was installed that the crazy startup process would disappear but it didn't. I saw afterwards in a CM forum that this happened to someone else and they had asked if the wiki could be updated to point to the Ace hack kit guide to rooting the Inspire 4g (which mentions that eng hboot shouldn't be used with the phone I had as configured). I then rebooted into bootloader via adb and after crazy startup and fastboot did not work at all (fastboot devices returned nothing). Further still, no buttons work in hboot at all (Vol Up, Vol Down, Power).
At this point, I could still get into the phone, but I wanted to try to undo everything I did and start over using the Ace hack kit. I then tried to use the Ace hack kit to unroot the phone by using the ATT GB RUU. The process seemed to go pretty far, but after a reboot, the phone never came back, and that's where I am currently. If I start the phone, it does crazy startup but never fully boots...stays on white HTC screen forever...which means I can't use adb (to my knowledge). I was able to get to hboot by putting elastics around volume down button and waiting a very long time, but it looks like hboot is still the eng hboot because none of the buttons work and I can't use fastboot. I was hoping that as part of RUU flashing that hboot would be restored to original one. I put the RUU (PD98IMG.img) on SD card, but again I can't get to it because buttons don't work.
So, it sounds like spv4 above is in a very similar boat. I have no idea what else to try. Only thing I can think of is if it's possible to somehow modify an RUU to start automatically when getting to hboot without any user input.
If anyone has any suggestions, I am more than willing to try anything. Thanks very much.
EDIT: So, as I was typing this post earlier, I had been "sitting" in hboot the whole time. When I was done, I looked at phone and PD98IMG.zip was been applied to phone automatically! Don't know if this was common knowledge or not, but everything updated OK. When it was done, hitting the power button to reboot didn't work, but I just removed battery and when putting it back in, phone booted normally back to what looks like stock RUU. Hopefully this info helps someone else.

Great! Glad you got it back, but you could have saved a lot of time.
The main problem is that the ENG hboot (or pre-GB hboots) doesn't recognize something in the hardware of the new phones. The end result is that the hboot runs at about 50x slower. It eventually gets booted, and once booted to an OS (either the main OS or the recovery OS) it runs fine since hboot has exited and passed control to the OS. So anytime hboot is in control, things crawl at a snail's pace.
Because the OS runs fine and hboot has exited, it is possible to overwrite the hboot partition from the booted OS. That's what you are doing in the instructions that I posted a few posts back. Once the correct hboot is installed, all is fine.
I agree that someone needs to update the cyanogenmod wiki. It's way out of date.
I'm currently experiencing the same problem.
I followed the instructions on how to downgrade using a goldcard, successfully rooted and i also flashed TrickDroid on it, but every time i turn the device on i have to hold the power button for 20 seconds and wait 10 minutes till the HTC logo appears, then it takes 2 minutes vibrating and i seriously can't deal with this.
can you please tell me how to fix this?

Find the fix in the guide in my signature....you need to have basic knowledge of adb commands. If you need further help just let me know. :good:

Hi,
I need some help. I have 2 EVO's with similar problems, but different symptoms.
It all started when I tried to flash them to Boost using CDMA workshop! I know I should of stopped when i messed up the first one, but I'm a slow learner, and, I was successful with an EVO Shift, but the EVO 4G is a lot harder. Anyway, I now have 2 semi bricked phones and need some help.
The first one is stuck in the white screen bootloop, it comes on and shows HTC EVO 4G, goes black for a few seconds and then starts again. It has,
HBOOT 2.10.0001
RADIO 2.15.00.11.19
I have tried flashing a PC36img.zip from the sd card and I ran RUU image version 3.70.651.1, via USB cable which went through the entire process. The RUU says, Congratulations. Your ROM update has been completed. Your phone is now ready for use. At which time it goes straight back into bootloop.
The second phone has a black screen with htc in the middle and a triangle in each corner, it just sits in this state. It has,
HBOOT 2.16.0001
RADIO 2.15.00.85.02
When i run the RUU, it says if the phone has the 4 triangles, it means the RUU failed and rerun the RUU, which I have done with the same result.
I'm figuring I messed up something deeper than the RUU fixes, I realize i got way out of my depth on these 2 phones, the shift went so easily, I thought these would be the same.
I have read many forums and tried everything that has been suggested, with no positive results, any help would be greatly appreciated.
I've been an android user and a lurker for a while here, and I made a stupid mistake today. I got a new evo shift since my last one had a screen problem, and I used the most used guide to downgrade and all that. However, where I messed up is on this step 17) dd if=/sdcard/misc.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p17 Instead of using "misc.img" I stupidly used "PG06IMG.zip" instead and went through with it. I rebooted my phone into the bootloader and it went through installing the older 2.2 ROM. After that I reboot to find my phone stuck on the famous HTC boot loop. No problem I think, I go back and try to flash RUU 2.3.4 through Windows to reset everything. I've tried commands on cmd but most of the time it gives me a signature verify failure. Anyway, I wait for about an hour to find the RUU installer stuck on SENDING... I feel like an idiot and I need some help, anything? Thanks.
Edit 2: Somehow got 2.3.4 bootloader on the screen, but once again it still boot loops. In addition, clockword recovery does not boot and instead goes to HTC boot loop.
PS: If nothing works, I am prepared to head to Sprint and get another Shift due to my stupidity.
Ok a few questions. Did you start on Android version 2.3.4, I'm assuming you did. Did the PG06IMG.zip run all the way through ? What exactly does the Bootloader say ? If it did not go back and adb push the misc.img. Then follow the rest of the directions to Root to the letter.
not rooted, htc inspire 4g, s-on, partially used aakh hack kit...
dont think anything has been flashed yet and couldnt boot into clockworkmod...
2.3.5 please help me asap.
i used aakh to try to root my phone, didnt work...
i saw another methood that involve using the hack kit to install that version of clockworkmod. (that seemed to work.) then i used another hack tool (warp drive?) that was origanally used for a different phone.
(video is on youtube, {hacking the htc insire 4g 2.3.5} the guy has two vids of the same thing, one is a remake)
i got to the end and kept getting the red triangle and could not proceed.
now the day after, that night my phone was running slow, i noticed that the vol down wasnt responding and the phone was running very slow. i restarted the phone, (no shutdown option)
it instantly rebooted to the hboot menu (2 seconds if that after it was off) and says "*** LOCKED ***" at the top
i can not scroll with the vol up, down, and it only does anything when i have the sd card inserted before starting hboot.
pulled out the battery... and all that stuff, it still instantly boots to the hboot screen.
it tries to find several extensions of PD98IMG on the sd card.
says "no image!" for the first few. obviously because it insnt there to load.
then it gets to the .zip exention, says loading, then checking, then it says
model id incorrect!
update failed!
press <POWER> to reboot.
is it trying to flash someting now? my phone is s-on not rooted, 2.3.5 gingerbread i guess
is there another zip file i can download to replace the PD98IMG.zip?
(i already tried to download one but im having hell getting the file from my computer to my phone, [using a galaxy note II to try and transfer, not being user friendly])
do i need to have a gold card, ( idk if it is already a gold card or not, but it most likely didnt happen yet)
is there a way to get root from this point, if not im not too worried about it i just need to fix my phone.
please help, asap my dad is about to take it to at&t and if they do anything to it i dont want them to erase my other memory card or factory reset because someone is an idiot.
guys i know that's a lot of info im just trying to answer questions before they are asked to get the problem solved a little bit faster...
any ideas would be wonderful.
