Tablet Decision: Ipad vs. GTab

I'm about to buy my first tablet device and have the option of buying either the ipad or the viewsonic g-tab. Originally what i was going to do was buy the ipad and then sell it once a honeycomb tablet is released, but that changed after i read about the G-tab on here.
The number one reason for me wanting the ipad is the quality of the tablet optimized apps. Yes i know the android apps scale up nicely (my gf has a nook color that i rooted for her) but they're just not the same.
So if you guys were in my position what would you do? Get the ipad for now and wait for the honeycomb tablets to be released and then sell it ORRR get the g-tab now and sell that once the honeycomb tablets come out. The second choice im worried about the depreciation in value once the honeycomb tablets come out, the ipad not so much since the next ipad comes out in aprilish
I don't care about the price difference
and I want a tablet NOW like within the next 2 days
Im also kind of picky about screen quality. I dont care too much about viewing angles i just dont want a washed out screen (super amoled spoiled me lol)

If screen is your main concern then g-tablet wont fit your need when compared to ipad, for me after using it for a month I am liking it.
So you have to prioritize your needs, if you read this forum many of them said high about g-tablet except for the screen.

Guess it really depends on what apps are important to you. There aren't many tablet optimized apps currently for android but there will be once honeycomb comes out.
One important thing about the G Tab (or most android froyo tablets) is full web experience. For example, I never need to use the Facebook app since I can access the full facebook website just fine.

If you want it right away and don't have the time to tinker, ipad is your best choice.

i have lots of time to tinker. If i do go for the g-tab im loading Cm7 on it right away ..i hate decisions

If you will never need to use Flash... Gtab has flash now.

From what you've specifically detailed, the iPad is more your speed. But otherwise there are too many variables that make it too close a call to recommend one over the other in your case.
iPad pros are optimized apps and a more streamlined experience as well as the obviously 'better' screen and the resale value.
GTablet pros over the iPad right now don't really fit into anything you've mentioned - and that is, that this is a more feature rich device, having a sdcard slot for expanded storage, a dual core cpu and better gpu than the iPad.
If I were in your shoes, how I see it is that the GTablet is an investment and something to look forward to tinkering with and upgrading now and when the software is available later on (possibly), not something to buy now and sell later. I doubt you'll get 80-90% the value of the G Tablet when you re-sell it.
The iPad would be a better purchase in your scenario, as something to use right now and then sell when this years tablets hit the market in early to mid 2011.

I already have both
For my personal use I have a Droid X phone and a gTab tablet. My job has given me "for work use" an iPhone 4 and an iPad.
For me with the use of VEGAn beta 5.1 and all of the tweaks I have been able to do on my gTab I get a lot of use out of it. I read digital magazines, play all sorts of games, surf all sorts of websites (with Flash and without) and watch all sorts of videos (both personally ripped or streams off of websites).
Plus, with my rooted Droid X, using Wireless Tether I can get unlimited 3G through my phone as a WiFi hotspot so I always have internet connectivity on my gTab for no additional monthly fees.
My work iPhone 4 cannot be used as a WiFi hotspot (yes it can be jailbroken but it doesn't belong to me). So my company pays for a data plan on my iPhone as well as paying a separate data plan fee for my iPad. If I had to pay out of my own pocket I wouldn't use the iDevices simply due to the extra monthly cost on top of paying more for the devices in the first place.
In the end, it's a matter of preference. Yes, the screen on the gTab leaves MUCH to be desired and the screen on the iPad is crisp and clear with way better veiwing angles. But I personally don't care so much about the veiwing angle issue on my gTab.
The only time I actually use my iPhone or iPad (in all honesty) is when I take the family out to eat and need to keep 2 little boys occupied so they don't make our time out a living hell. The Netflix app is only available on the iDevices and so I use them to show my kids either Shaun the Sheep (my 18 month old LOVES it) or a Batman/Superman animation (my 4 year old LOVES it).
So, like others have already said, if ease of use and screen quality is your main concern, go with the iPad. Or, get both.

I was facing the same discision and went with the G Tablet for now as it is built for the future. The Ipad will also be in my future but I will wait for the second generation of IPAD. The current IPAD is facing extinction and is running at the end of life cycle. Latest leaks say an announcement on the IPAD could come out at the end of this month.

Based on your requirements I would go for the iPAD 2 when it comes out. Unfortunately the G-Tablet is truly a 1st generation Android tablet... Its screen is horrible (useless Portrait, washed out or too dark if not at the right angle in Landscape), the OS is virtually unusable in its out of the box state, requires fairly high technical understanding and a ton of patience to get the custom ROMs working (for those of you say its easy.. yes it is when your technically inclined... If your my wife it would never happen)... Each ROM has a trade-off... Some are faster but unstable, some are stable and fast but have limited features, some just dont work!
Most simple games run but a good percentage of those do not fit the screen properly, most complex games just dont run or are unstable. Most applications run but a small percentage dont fit the screen properly.
All in all you buy the G-Tablet because your a geek, love to fiddle and cant wait for the next best thing... If your not a geek and have patience then in about 3-5 months there will be many good choices...
For sure the iPAD is must more mature... If want an out of the box experience its a no brainer...
I am not an apple fan boy or an android fan boy.. just a realist...

If even considering an iPad, you should wait. The update will be huge- if you like Apple stuff, of course.

1. Dual core
2. Micros sd (about 90% likely)
3. Even better display than iPad (wow)
4. Front & back camera
5. Rumor of a 128gb version (no sure about that one)
I am glad I bought the gTablet, since paid $350 for it. There is a metric ton of great games and apps releasing for the iPad platform. I will probably buy one myself and give more time for Honeycomb at the app platform to mature for it. gTablet is a GREAT bridge.

Since you plan to sell whatever you buy once the new iPad hits, seems to me your best bet is to buy something second hand now. That way, you won't lose as much money when you turn around and sell a few months later.

iPad, just because of that one sentence. The GTab screen is not washed out, but portrait mode is bad and the viewing angles are crapola (especially in portrait). The iPad has an IPS screen, which just blows the GTab screen away. It's a major difference between the two. I have an AMOLED screen on my Cowon S9, so I know what you're talking about.
If you are willing to wait a few months, more tablets should be released with IPS screens. And of course there's the Notion Ink Adam (if they actually ship today, and if the reviews are good). Plus the iPad 2 is coming out in April, so buying an iPad v1 now might not be the best idea.
Suggestion: Buy something that will hold back the instant gratification factor - I know that feeling and understand it quite well. Possibly an iPad v1 with the understanding that you'll probably lose about 15% of your money on the resale, as the bargain hunters wil be vying for v1's after the v2 comes out.
My other concern with the iPad is the walled garden factor - once you commit yourself to iOS, you are basically stuck with it. At least with a Gtab you have Android as the base and can move between vendors.

I had an iPad and sold it specifically to get my G-Tablet.
I loved the iPad but am really into tinkering - so the G-Tablet was more my speed. It's not perfect which is oddly what I kind of like about it.
If money is no object and you are just looking for a toy to use like a "normal person" I would probably just get the iPad.

No not the new ipad lol. I want either the xoom or that unnamed toshiba honeycomb tablet but i have no idea when those are coming out. From what i've read the xoom is next month but thats mostly going to be a 3g/4g enabled version which i do not want. I am definitly going to jailbreak/root whichever one i get.
Where is the best place to get the g-tab? Sears, office depot? how much is it?

If your going for the XOOM then you might as well get the iPAD... Android buyers want android due to openness.. other then that the iPAD is fare superior (at least for today - Later this year can be a different story)

Personally, I can't do the Apple walled garden thing.
If you can, then yeah, go for the ipad.

I found a new G-Tab for 350, no tax, no shipping on E-bay last week. Did the OTA update that came out late December. Installed the enhancement pack to which I added a Google contact syn apk. Did the market fix. I also use the paid version of ADW Launcher. Everything so far works great. At the college where I work all of the students are loaned iPads (and I am a previous 3GS owner). So I spend a fair time around the iOs devices. I will admit there is a certain amount of polish not found in Android. Having said that, my web experience is far superior to the iPad, and since that is primarily what I got it for I feel it was a better purchase.

I looking to buy a tablet and from everything I have read and tested at Office Depot (viewing angles) the G tab seems fine to me. I am sure it will be faster after I root and load new ROM.
But with all of the new tabs coming (xoom and so on) at this point should I just wait. I know the xoom seems very high to me (800.00) not sure I want to pay that much. I know I don't want to buy another tab for 2 years or so. So maybe the xoom would solve that issue.

If you are willing to root the 'g' tablet and install one of the community developed ROMs, I say go for it. The 'g' tablet was bleeding edge when it came out, is still at the head of the pack and will remain a strong platform for another year and a half to two years.
The price is right and unless you always have to be right at the bleeding edge, you will not be disappointed with a 'g' over the time frame you are looking at (and perhaps a little beyond).

Wait for Xoom to Come Out and Then Buy GTablet
Given how active the developers are, I'm betting that within a couple of weeks of the release of Xoom there will be a XoomLite Rom here for the Gtablet. So I'd wait a couple of weeks until the Xoom comes out. Take a look at it in a store and if it is really $800, unless there is something in the Xoom hardware that you can't live without, buy the Gtablet. Then put the ROM of your choice on your Gtablet (I use TNTLite) and keep checking back for what I expect will be a version of Xoom for our Gtablets.

If you are a tinkerer- get the Gtablet now. Seems all of the devices have quirks coming out, but one common thing is some form of dual core chipset. Quirks are there in one combo or other:
1. Overpriced
2. Proprietary connectors
3. No USB Host
4. No USB
5. Did I say overpriced yet?
Example is the Xoom. Costs $800. My Gtablet and 64gb iPod 4 cost $86 less than that.
My next tab will be the iPad "2". I love the app ecosystem and the game & app quality is AMAZING. I have my Gtablet and Incredible for Android fun and for Flash & internet function. Game emulators too.
BTW, my next phone will be either the Thunderbolt, Bionic or something similar on Verizon. No iPhone and the Xperia Play will likely have proprietary connectors, no microsd (Sony proprietary) and be locked down, so no dice for me.
iTunes may suck butt since a forced interface, but a lot of apps rock hard! Real hard.

If you're still unsure, then your best bet is to wait. You may even want to wait for the new 10.1 inch samsung tablet. I believe it will cost more than the Xoom but its another option. Here are some specs for that device:

Buying a archos 7 first. I got rid of that because it wasn't what I thought. I think the g tab is the coolest
toy I have ever had. If you want just a giant cell phone without the phone then wait for the Xoom.

The new Elocity A10 is coming out, but the 4gb is more money than the 16gb Gtablet. For the extra money you get a (supposedly) better screen and backlit buttons. But, since it hasn't been shipped out yet you have no idea about the quirks involved.
The Notion Adam looks cool, people that have it seem to like it but who knows how long it will take to get your hands on one. I would wait and watch since it is a new company.
The Archos 101 has it's pluses like a ton of codecs, but it has bugs and also supposedly has a bad screen. The price is nice though.
The Xoom is $800 and requires a month of Verizon service. It is a great looking tablet, but if I were going to spend that much I could get a good computer with money left over.
You can wait forever for more tablets tablets to come out. When the iPad was announced I kept hearing over and over that a better, cheaper Android tablet was on the way. Here we are, nearly a year out and there is nothing that competes.
Were I think the G tab excels is price point. Especially if you can get the $279 price. It has a great following on this site, a good set of hardware and once it is rooted it flies.

Buy the gtablet...better yet buy two for the cost of one xoom! We'll get honeycomb too.

I like that it uses a full SD Card slot for cheaper/larger storage options (>32gb) and has a user replaceable battery.

I've seen a lot of comparisons between the Gtablet and other tabs, but what does everyone about the vpad10s?
From the specs and all, it looks like a dual boot Gtab, which has its own appeals.

Dual boot would be great if the device would at least come with Android 2.2 but instead only having 1.6 makes it deal breaker for me.

And then there's the Touchpad, the HP/Palm WebOS tablet that's due out this summer:

I was torn between waiting and getting the G...ended up with the G-tablet and no regrets once I figured out how to encode high def video so it would play.
Wth TNTLite installed, this thing really hums, and frankly, I was expecting a seriously bad screen, and while it's not a 90 degree viewing angle, it looks fantastic when you're looking right at it (and frankly, if I'm using it, I'm looking at it).
Not to mention that at the price they're going for (and I had shipping and taxes to get to Canada), it is still soooo much cheaper than any of the alternatives with same specs (The Elocity A10 for around the same price only has 4GB onboard).

You can always wait for something better, but for us it was a matter that it seemed like a great deal for the price. I had the FCs with the stock TnT apps but after installing the vegan rom everything is great.
Would of loved to have gotten a Xoom, but considering we got 2 Tegra2 based 10' tabs for the same price, and they do everything that we need I am satisfied.

I have ordered a GTab from Amazon (should be here tomorrow.. you have to love prime). I have not ordered a keyboard yet nor a sd card. But have a 6gb card that should work for now.
If all goes well then I will keep it. I will try the xoom when it comes out, but for the money and features of the Gtab and for the use I need (really just notes in meetings and browsing the web) I think I am good.
Another question: I want to use either a USB keyboard or a RF keyboard/Track ball) what ROM do you suggest?
And if I wanted to make a backup of the current ROM before I upgrade what do you suggest? Or should I just use one of the manufacturer ROMs listed in the dev forum?

Up until last week, I too, was torn between waiting for the Xoom, or 'settling' with a lesser tab like the Galaxy Tab.
I picked up a Viewsonic G Tablet at Sears for $399, rooting it 30 minutes after unwrapping it, I've no regrets. My reasoning was as follows:
1 - Wanted it to be Android-based, so no Ipad.
2 - Galaxy Tab at 7", a little too small.
3 - Tegra2 based, should be Honeycomb-ready, no need for a rear camera.
4 - Xoom, even if Wifi-only version is released, I doubt it would beat the GTab at price.
This should last me until maybe the next gen of Android tablets arrive next year.
Currently running Vegan 5.1.1 ROM, with full market, all the apps I could want. This is so much fun!

Really was an easy choice for me. Price plus fun of rooting and flashing roms while I wait for honeycomb. The gtab rules and my friends that get to play with mine can't put it down. I can't put it down ;-)

Looking for unbiased opinions on G tab, in the G tab forum lol

So my situation, I was fortunate to earn a free ipad wifi/3g 16gb from a sales contest at work, well Ive played with the thing for a few weeks and I have to say apple blows. Anyways gunna sell it on ebay, looking like I can get about $450 for it.
I then want to take the money and buy an android tablet, i really want a honeycomb one, but I know they are very expensive as they are just coming out.
So I thought to myself why couldn't I just buy a tablet that comes with Froyo, and then root it, and flash a custom honeycomb rom once a developer ports it over to my device..? It would save me alot of cash/waiting.
So I'm assuming all the G tab owners did some shopping around before buying this tablet. What are the top 3 android tablets under $450 in your opinion?
Obviously another concern is which tablet under $450 will be likely to have the most developer support, being the flashaholic that I am, I really want something that has many roms and kernels etc.. availiable. I did see quite a few roms in the G tab development section, but I am finding it very difficult to find out information about other tablets as far as rom development. What do you guys thing from a developer support stand point?

Under $450 and that are out now tablets....
If you're just looking for a tablet to browse the internet, casual gaming, youtube..you know basic stuff...you can save about $100 by buying a nook. Lots of dev support...I mean lots.
If you want something more powerful with a bigger screen but weaker viewing angles than the gtab is tops in my opinion. If you don't mind a used gtab...than I would grab one if you can find it.
As for a third choice, I guess I would get the archos 70 or 101.

I personally wouldn't get a nook. I had one and ended up trading it for an archos 101. From what it looks like there is more development for the GTab. The nook is a nice device but I really didn't think the device was speedy enough for me. If I'm getting a tablet then it should have better specs then my phone (Nexus S). Screen on the Nook was nice but I've always wanted a bigger tab. I like my archos 101 but then again the processor was good but I felt it could be better. I just sold my archos a few days ago on here and ordered a GTab and it'll be here tomorrow. Nook is $250 new and GTab cost me $368, with the GTab you may be getting a worse screen but you get more internal storage, better processor, bluetooth, IMO better dev support, and a USB port which I personally want. I've also had a Galaxy Tab but when I had it development was slow so I got rid of it also again it has the same specs as my phone. IMO theres no point in a tablet that has equal or worse specs then your phone (unless you have a dual core phone) and after experience 7inch screens are good for reading and comics but 10.1inch screens are better for web browsing and even better for reading and comics

Had my gtab for about 2 weeks now that I bout from another user here on xda for $320. Prior to the purchase I had been following the forums and watching youtub videos of the device and drooling. Now that I have it, I feel I may have hyped it a bit too much. It is a good device but there are a few things about it that bother me but to be fair I was expecting some of them. the screen is as bad as they say. This device is pretty hefty. Holding it in can be tiresome at times. The bezel is thin on three sides, one of which also has capacitive buttons which makes it hard to find a comfortable way to hold it at times unless you are using both hands. No gps. As for the roms, as good as they are they are far from perfect. They each have their own issues which were easy to ignore at first but after a while i find to be annoying when you want something that just works. I appreciate the devs though and I'm sure in time they will figure everything out. After trying a xoom at frys the other day I can honestly say they know what a tablet should be like. I just wish it wasn't an extra 500 bucks.

BuI shopped arround for a good while. I have been using resistive screen tablet PC's in my work for years, and hated them. Ugly screens tedious repeated touches to get anywhere. Call me crazy but I really believe that anyone who complains about the screen on the gtab needs to take a reality check. This thing has better viewing angles than my android phone. What do you want to do with it? Rest it on your coffee table and sit 10 feet away at a 45° angle and expect perfect color? Yes there are nicer screens out there but IMHO this is way better than the crap I have seen for years. I'm sure it would have had a super top of the line screen too if Malta could have gotten screens from LG at nearly cost like apple does.
The price is perfect and the screen is perfect for the price. Enjoy the fact that no one will see what's on your screen unless you want them to. Its a security feature in my book.

^^^^Yeah This. I waited a week for mine to come from the good ol' US of A (Im in oztralia )
After reading all the reports.. bad screens, slow stock UI etc I thought ok, well the screen is probably as bad as they say and the UI cant be that bad...
well it was exactly opposite - the screen is actually not that bad compared to some screens i deal with daily. UI was even worse than I could have imagined.
I know have vegan on it and it rocks. For the price I am absolutely blown away.

You can not go wrong with the g-Tab. Especially since you stated that you are a "Flashaholic." I have had mine for almost 2 months now and absolutely love it. I have tried both the vegan and TNT-Lite roms, and ended up staying with the TNT-Lite. While there are many things that could have been implemented better, in my mind it is a better value right now than the competition. I love the fact that it has removable storage. I have a little case that I keep my micro-SD cards in and swap them out whenever I want to watch something else or need more storage. Since purchasing this product, I have taken it with me on several business trips, and have found it indispensable. I can even back my photos up onto it using an SD card reader.
Bottom Line: If you do not mind playing around and fiddling with settings and enjoy trying new things, then I suggest getting the g-Tab. Over wise I suggest waiting a little longer until the "Tablet Form Factor" becomes more settled.

Just a note on the Notion Ink Adam which falls into the sub $450 category (wifi LCD version, anyways). I received hoping to get better viewing angles but they seemed to be the same as the Gtab, plus I really like the Gtab's form factor a lot more. The Adam was heavier, thicker and more squared off making it not as comfortable to hold as the Gtab. I ebayed the Adam and actually turned a little profit from it

I think the g tab sounds like it will do what I want, it really will just be for playing games, web browsing, and taking on airplanes etc, so it sounds like the way to go. And hopefully honeycomb roms will be available before too long!
Follow up question, where can you get a good case for the g tab? I liked the one that I bought my ipad, it was kind of like a little padfolio and it could fold into a "stand" which was great for watching movies on the plane.

So I was wondering if I had to update anything in order to flash custom roms, or can I just root my tab, and then follow the instructions on that thread and be good to go on custom roms?
Also what ROM would you guys recomend? I am typically an AOSP guy assuming that everything is functional, but my wife will be using this tablet too and she is not very tech savvy, so I would like a rom that is pretty stable, any suggestions would be apprecited thanks!
Also I see clockwork v08 seems to be the hot ticket, so I assume that I will use that? I have always used Amon RA on my EVO, but it doesnt appear that Amon RA is availiable for the G tab, is that a correct assumption?

Just pick out a ROM - TNTLite and VEGAn are the two most popular around here - and follow the instructions carefully.

Just a little update, I got my GTab today and love it sooooooooo much. Viewing angles aren't to bad. Monster Madness, Samurai II, and Backbreaker are awesome. Very fast device

Wi-Fi only Motorola Xoom at Sam's Club
I think the gTab is the best bang for your buck at between $350 and $400 especially with the ROMs our gTabDevs are churning out for us. However, if you really want an official Honeycomb tablet I've read that Sam's Club will be selling these at their stores for around $500 each in the next few weeks.
Just thought some folks might want to know.

I am sticking with my Nook Color
After having received the Archos 101. I was disappointed in the screen quality and the touch screen and lack of dev support. I sold it and got the g tablet and was in love with it until I bought my mom a kindle and started to like the form factor and size. I then started becoming bored with my g tablet. I then began looking at the nook color forums and decided to buy one, since I have bought it, I haven't touched my g tablet. I really like the size and the feel of it, I read more now and still play the games I like. I am happy running CM7 gingerbread and looking forward to honeycomb when it comes out as AOSP.

The dirty little secret is that there is no day to day life changing use for a tablet. So this can put you in two categories.
#1. You want to try and use the tablet during travel and such. In this case form factor is going to be important. The Nook Color is probably a better option as you sacrifice overall performance for the usability of the design.
#2. You want a device to develop on and try to utilize the latest and greatest. The Tegra 2 is the "it" platform right now for the android tablets. The GTab and its brothers give you the best entry into this field.
I am solidly in #2. Sure I have played some games on my tablet, I have browsed the web and I have used it on the go. But there has never been a situation where my VZ Droid would not have let me do the exact same thing.
I am comfortable with the fact that I bought a development platform. Having it in hand shows me the potential of the concept.

Excellent post, and i'm in catoegory #2 as well, I'm playing with house money becuase I got the ipad for free. But my wife really wants something to play games with and I like to watch movies etc on the airplane as well as browse the etc at home.

[Q] Best Tegra 2 tablet under $500?

I've been doing some research for buying an android tablet for about a month now. Things that have become a must for me:
512mb (or better) of ram
Tegra 2 cpu
Around 10" high res (enough for honeycomb) screen
Under $500
Rootable, and has good dev support
Most you will be thinking, "you're describing the viewsonic g-tab, right?" Well, that's mainly what I'm thinking about. I'm wondering if there are any other great tablets that I'm missing. Any advice, comments or whatever would be appreciated. Thanks!

Id stay away from the g-tablet. The specs seem great for the price, but the screen is a HUGE disappointment. The viewing angles are terrible, it washes out when moved the slightest bit. In fact, straight on doesn't even seem to be the best angle.
I didn't even bother rooting mine, which anyone would want to do since the tap n tap UI on it is terrible. The screen was an immediate dealbreaker. My flytouch 2 screen is leaps and bounds better, and that's kinda sad since it was less than half the price of a g-tablet.

I think you're looking for something that doesn't exist yet. The best bet will probably be the Tablet Toshiba is dropping soon, assuming its around that price. Otherwise you might as well keep waiting with me.

The view angle of the G Tablet certainly could be better, but this guy is exaggerating too much. The screen looks terrific when seen at the best angle. And I can highly recommend the G Tablet for you. It isn't perfect but no Tablet out there for any price is perfect.

Thanks guys for your input. I've decided I'm just gonna have to go with the risk and buy one. If the viewing angles really are that bad, I'll simply re-sell it on ebay

Viewsonic Gtab
Viewing angle is NOT that bad, accessories are the problem. Can't find them in the US! But once you get a good rom on it, I have had no regrets dropping a few hundred on the toy.
Notice I say toy, cause there is no 'need' for this equipment yet. No honeycomb, no easy out of the box use, but I enjoy the speedy vegan tab rom and have used it for movies, email, and just tom-foolery android apks. Get an atom laptop if you want something out of the box that is based on functionality if you need to buy before Q4 2011.

You should check out the Barnes and Noble Nook Color! I got one just for the ereader and have since rooted it and then even installed CM7. The only thing it doesn't have is a camera and Bluetooth mic support(yet).

As much as I agree with how awesome the value of the Nook color is... It doesn't meet any of his requirements.
I believe the Acer Iconia Tab and Asus EEE transformer meets all of your needs and price range.

I have Toshiba Folio 100 and I'm not happy with it, little dev support, bad screen, lots of bugs that Toshiba don't fix and if you buy one, you'll surly get one with bad part(s), because Toshiba made bad parts and every tablet has another parts. New Toshiba tablet seems OK, but I won't buy any from Toshiba. I have same problem and I'll wait. In near future(2012), tablets will better and they'll have dual boot(android,ubuntu;androd, windows 8), faster processors(nvidia quad core processor), new OS's(windows 8, ubuntu, android ice cream sandwich tbat will be universal, chrome os) and the best of all, they'll cheaper!
After this, I think you will wait

I have the Acer Iconia A500 Tab which was bought in Germany.
Has a few small issues as you would expect from a fresh honeycomb device but nothing that you couldnt live with until Acer put out the update for Honeycomb 3.1 before the end of June.
If you can get past the little niggles, it has an excellent screen with amazing viewing angles, bright, crisp and clear. Fantastic build quality, including a thin brushed aluminium skin and a reasonable weight that wont flare up your RSI.
After the usual tweaks and additional root apps for improved battery life, you can quite happily use the device constantly for between 10-12 hours (mixed media)
has 1gb of ram, 32gb space, wireless -n, USB, Mini USB, Mini HDMI, encryption etc etc etc.
Baring in mind that it is almost 'stock' honeycomb 3.0 (Still includes the mobile phone elements even though this is wifi only, there is a reason bhind the choice ), i believe the slab has a lot of potential and cant wait till people start improving it.
Im very happy with the device so far and fully expecting the issues to be resolved in the first customised version of the 3.1 update from Acer.

From what I can see, the Xoom has a better screen and Honeycomb. If the G tablet really gets HC is the Xoom really worth USD 200 more?

Only you can make that decision; if the G Tablet fulfills the requirements you had for an Android Tablet then there really is NO reason to jump to anything else. This tablet is an open platform that does everything the Xoom does (except for 3/4G). Having said that this always boils down to personal preference.
The G Tablet still does everything I need it to do; the devs will LEAP on HC once the real source is released have no fear there. Also with guys like it2steve doing his best to bring us accessories that are available and at a good price we really have all the things we need going forward.
If you are the type of person that hops to the next new shiny thing that comes out then between now and June you will be jumping like a jack rabbit!
Personally I am satisfied with what I have... I am staying....

As a developer, I really want a Xoom just so I can start developing with the Honeycomb API w/o relying upon the emulator, which is slow and painful to use.
The G-tablet does everything I need for my own personal use and I'm still blown away by the speed of the hardware 5 months after purchasing.
If I had Honeycomb on my G-Tablet I wouldn't even think twice about the Xoom (other than maybe the screen, but it's pretty rare the G-Tablet's screen bothers me).
Plus, I have a feeling they'll be giving away a Xoom to everyone at the Google I/O conference this year and I'm waiting to see if I was 1/10 people to win a free ticket via their Last Call for I/O Android contest which I completed last week. So if I do end up winning, I'll at least wait until after Google I/O to see if I get a free Xoom. But I'm hoping Honeycomb source will be released by then....

Very happy with Gtab. 1 tablet + 4 different roms to play with !

The GTAB is actually faster than the Xoom right now (I have both). HC actually needs a little bit of work, imo.
Eventually the GTAB will be the old horse to put out to pasture, but we're not quite at that point, yet. Xoom does have the better screen and camera, so points for that.

Checked it out today. The xoom screen has some poor quality viewing angles too. It is ok on a $379 tab but on a $799 ridiculous. Your choice, just thought I would mention, that the grass isn't greener--pun intended--from all viewing angles.
I personally plan to own several tabs in all sizes and flavors. Hey, why not? For me it makes good business sense to cross pollenate. Holding the xoom didn't feel as good as holding GTab. Verizon's logo permanently etched on the top right-hand side was distracting as well as tacky. They should have put on one of those peel off stickers like they do on laptops telling you intel or whatever is inside. Go for it, if it works for you. I went in for a 2nd tab today and came out empty handed. Oh well, the playbook will be released on April 19, they are taking prelim orders now at Best Buy.
I won't be buying it until I put my hands on it and drive it first. Oh yeah, the xoom had quite a few force closes while I was playing with it to my surprise.
Has anybody seen the Creative Ziio up-close? Some of the specs are mediocre and some good like the audio capability its boosting if it works. Also, it's a 7 inch coming in around $279.

You mean better camera. The screen has some viewing angle issues too. I went in to buy today and left out empty handed. $799 for a camera and operating system doesn't make good business sense to me. Glad you like it. Are you having the FC issues? Happened to me a few times while I was playing with it.

With the announcement of the new Galaxy Tab and it's lower price, the Xoom doesn't look all that appealing anymore. I love my G, but will seriously consider a switch in June to the Samsung due mostly to thickness, available accessories and HC.

Love my gtab got it for 279 a month or so ago from Sears outlet.com and picked it up an hour away from home. Xoom is overpriced for a little bit more screen Res and honeycomb. Screen is not as bad as many say on gtab if tablet is used as tablet. If wanna CPU use a CPU. Not to mention don't need data plan. not to mention someone will get honeycomb on it soon enough.Use home wifi and 3g hotspot hack with data throttle hack on my DX. Ha Verizon up your big red [email protected] Best bang for your Buck as far as tabs go as of today.

If you use wifi and dont need 3g I don´t see why to switch and pay a lot more for the xoom. Same processor, in benchmarks practically the same, just for a better screen and camera plus honeycomb that will be around us very soon I don´t think its worth it imo

Other than to be a "hey look what i have" kinda person i really don't see much point in going to a different tab. I'm happy with my tab. Lets face it...other than surfing the web and playing with some apps these tabs are limited. So why would i want to go spend $600 on one...i can get a smokin laptop for that kinda money.

Reports have shown that the xoom sales have been underwhelming.

I could buy a Xoom if I wanted to, not the issue.
But the Gtab does so much more than the other Tablets, and price is not the issue.
I use my Gtab everyday and it's rock steady.
Yes, I wish I could connect to a Cisco VPN (anytime connect), but not sure if the Xoom would even support that.
I played around with the Xoom for awhile and it was heavy and didn't blow my socks off.
Screen definately better...

I got mine about a month ago rooted it instantly settled on vegan. Checked the xoom out yesterday i was not impressed glad it got the gt. Great battery life. Now if it was thin like ipad2, oops can i say that word here? Im sticking with my gt.

I'm not, but the gtab does for me. Even at close to $500, I'd still have to say Notion Ink Adam with PixelQi is a better value, but at this point I'll be holding out for Tegra3 kal-el and/or whatever the other SoC makers can do with cortex-a9.
I'll still want a PixelQi screen or mirasol as I'd REALLY like to be able to use them outside on sunny days and still have good battery runtime.

I'm guessing the xoom people are laughing at us now for getting something that's less than 800 they paid for theirs. Have you guys been to the xoom forum? They seem like a proud bunch over there. Yeah, proud to pay $800 for something that will be out of date 5 months from now.

I do not see a reason to upgrade to a new tablet anytime soon from the G-tab. Need to wait until a tegra 3 or 4 is out to make a decent enough reason for me to switch.

I've had the GTab since December and think it's an awesome tablet for the money given all of the great dev work going on.
However, after playing with the Xoom at Best Buy the other day, there's simply no comparison to the Xoom's screen and viewing angles. It's not that I care about others being able to see the GTab's screen, but I find it annoying that to watch a video I need to keep the GTab's screen just right, even in landscape, to keep the colors from washing out. And that's just for one person watching! And forget about portrait mode or watching with the tablet lying flat on a table.
The Xoom can do all of these things no problem. No washout, totally viewable from all angles and horizontally on the table. Seemed almost on par with the iPad. Also, while I didn't play with it long enough to make an informed opinion on Honeycomb, I thought the Xoom was plenty responsive, regardless of Quadrant scores. Maybe only slightly less so than the GTab with Vegan.
Whether the Xoom worth the extra money (to me, at least), I'm not so sure. But the WiFi version is in the right ballpark and is awfully tempting...
