[Q] Call Recording + Custom ROMs - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hey there Guys (and Gals),
As many of you are probably aware, call recording on the Android platform is quite a mixed bag. Some devices support call recording (two sided) out of the box. Others only record the device stream leaving the caller side audio only being recorded from the mic (which means very low volume). While others that may not support call recording out of the box, can be made to do so with either a Custom ROM and/or a patch.
What I would like to do is to start a thread similar to what was created for Windows Mobile devices where we compile a running list of Devices + Custom ROMs + Patches that have been confirmed to allow two side call recording.
We have compiled our own list of Android devices that our users have confirmed support call recording to a certain degree, but due to frequent use of Custom ROMs and patches, it's relatively inaccurate. Here's what we have so far:
- Acer Liquid 100
- Droid Eris
- Droid Incredible (may require speakerphone)
- G1
- General Mobile DSTL1
- HTC Evo
- HTC Dream
- HTC Hero
- HTC Legend
- HTC Magic
- HTC Tattoo
- HTC Wildfire
- LG540 (reported on OS 1.6)
- LG GW620 (reported on OS 1.6)
- LG Optimus One (reported on OS 2.2)
- Motorola Charm
- MyTouch
- Samsung Galaxy (OS 2.2)
- Samsung Vibrant (partially confirmed, please test first!)
- Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 / Mini
Unfortunately even on this list, it's not as simple as it looks. Some require very specific application settings to get call recording working, which can include the timing of the call recording, among other things.
With that said, it would be great if everyone could give the following feedback on this topic, so we can finally create a rock solid list of Android's that support this very important functionality. Please post ONLY if you are able to record both sides of the call with decent quality OR if someone has listed a Device/OS/ROM/Patch combination that is not working for you.
> Device Model/Variant
> OS Version
> or Custom ROM version
> Link to said Custom ROM
> Any additional Patch you feel you've installed that may have affected your ability to record calls
> Link to said Patch
> What call recording app(s) you were able to record using (as well as any special setting that was required, if any)
I'll monitor and maintain this post to ensure we end up with a clean, accurate list for all current and future Android users looking for this functionality. And of course, feel free to use our Total Recall application to test, which comes as a 14 day demo. If you require an extended demo, just PM me with your IMEI so I can refresh it for you. As an added bonus, if you do use Total Recall to test and are the first to report a specific working Device/ROM/OS/Patch combination, including the URLs to the custom ROM and/or patches, I'll give you a free license for the app.
Big thanks guys, I'm sure this will benefit us all!

*Generic* Dream ROM

All,
I currently own a stock RC30 UK T-Mobile Dream phone. I have come to terms with the fact that I dont have root access (yet) and have purchased a new ADP1, which hopefully will arrive next year.
When it does finally arrive I plan to make a generic build of RC30/RC8 firmware without all the T-Mobile junk in the ROM (web'n'walk etc) and no default APN's/MMS/etc. I have read through the re-packing sections etc and it seems possible to do without a lot of effort.
My question is; would this be something that other users would be interested in using? If so would you like to see it posted on these forums? Also, please post any comments with any functionality you would like to see added (default apps etc).
i think if you can incorporate new features into the rom such as auto rotate browser or any other tweaks to improve the G1, I'd think it'll be extremely popular. Case in point custom cooked Windows Mobile roms on this forum.
default apps is probably a hit or miss situation. I would stick to the only essentials (ie: Klaxon for alarm clock).
Good idea. We need to start building custom ROM's like all the other WM phones... Here's how I would go about building an Android ROM:
1. Start off with a generic build of android from source. Obviously include all the drivers for the dream.
2. Make a nice, clean skin. If you have knowledge of C/Java, don't be afraid to mess with visual structure of the platform,.
3. Add all the proprietary Google APK's (GMail, Calender, Amazon MP3 etc).
4. Add some 3rd party APK's based on user popularity. (Steel, Power Manager, Locale etc)
5. Add some hacks that require root (auto-rotate, improved tethering functionality)
Yes this will be very interested. All i need is to get bloody root!!! Soon though. Theres alot of smart cookies here
And rework the basic features such as sms's mms's picture viewer. contacts section ( add more input data points. like WM offers )
i guess as any rom you will never please everybody but i agree with "Datruesurfer" steel is a great app.
Onscreen keyboard like in steel or such its not to big and small. but a system wide onscreen keyboard. working in a very dirty industry the onscreen keyboard comes in.
Some other programs i find invaluable and should be an option in the default Android or i at least i really thinks so. are Smspopup, Missed call, Dgaway,Dgprefs, Rings Extender.
Power Manager as well is a good program to help better manage the battery and default network settings.
if there is a way to rework those and remove the default browser and add such options into the android rom itself i would be very pleased.

Android on GT-I8320
It would be so great to see android running on this machine, i have a friend that just sold his phone because of this stupid LiMo. How come it's so hard to have a working version? Is it because of drivers? who are the responsible?
any news on this? such a good phone, basically an expensive paperweight as i'm using x10..
Hi there.. There's awesome news...there were released more android roms and phone calls already work, but there's work needing to be done!!

There's also a lot of videos on youtube!
Hi there,
I just bought this wonderful phone with those awsome specs, even better than iphone 3g for 100$...
1 day of studying Limo OS and 360 service off, I love this phone... But there are some not good things about this OS (wi-fi internet loading big pages always crashes, not working GPS becouse only 360 users can do it..). Google'd, and found that people from China, Portugal, Poland Spain, have transported Android OS v2.2 froyo to this phone, but there are not working camera, UI sensor and other things...
Looking forward to next release of H1Droid. Just read chinese forum, and found that they already have H1droid 0.4 version in those days.
Want android system so badly...

Wifi is now working...stil some work needed in phone module and power managent!
GPS, Bluetooth ... not working yet!
Please contribute to this project!
is the processor on h1 fast enough for android 2.3?
It is! But it is too soon to port to android 2.3! We have to finish first the work on android 2.2!
Rom 0.6 released!

Android Phones with Call Recording Function

I would like to compile a list of Android phones that either...
1) Come with native call recording functionality.
2) Support call recording with 3rd party app/hack/ROM.
So that people who want this function can make a better purchase judgement. It would be great if you can lend a hand.
Please note that phones/apps that require using speakerphones (i.e. muffled voice from the other side; cannot record while headsets are used) to record the calls do *not* count. You can test by recording with a headset, Bluetooth or wired, and see if the voices from both sides are still loud and clear.
Most, if not all, "call recorder" apps on Android Market make use of such "speakerphone" hacks.
Please don't bring legality discussions here as well.
Thanks.
Jul-12 update: It is obvious now that this issue is not of Google origin, but of individual maker/carrier's decision, so choose wisely (and complaining to Google is unlikely to help.) The key, so it seems, is proper software (e.g. kernel, libraries) support.
Models that have this function built-in.
Meizu M9
Motorola Defy (Chinese mainland version ME525)
Motorola Milestone (with Chinese 2.2 ROM; Thanks to ystong)
Motorola XT701
Samsung Galaxy S (South Korean version SHW-M110S, with firmware DH09 or newer)
Models that don't have this function built-in but can use a 3rd party app/hack/ROM to record calls in both ways without turning on speakerphone.
HTC Desire; requires root and custom kernel/ROM
HTC HD2; requires custom rom and patch
HTC Hero/DROID ERIS; requires root and custom kernel; with rViox, support thread
HTC Magic (a.k.a. G2); requires root and custom kernel; with rViox, support thread
HTC Sensation; requires custom kernel, ROM and 3rd party app, support thread; Thanks to ccris
HTC Wildfire; requires root and custom kernel; with rViox, support thread
Motorola Defy; requires Chinese 2.2 ROM or Hacks with 3rd Party App or CM7 with 3rd Party App
Samsung i9000 (Galaxy S); with Hacks #1 or #2
Samsung i9100 (Galaxy S II); with 3rd Party App
Sony Ericsson X10, X10 Mini Pro and X8; with Call Recorder by Schass Innab
ZTE Blade (a.k.a. Orange San Francisco); requires custom ROM
Notes:
Developer skvalex claims his/her app can work with a number of devices from HTC and other makers, utilizing certain Qualcomm and Samsung processors, with custom kernel and root. Although I suspect that with proper kernel, a few other call recording apps, perhaps even free ones, would work as well.
The original issue 2117: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=2117
Original thread: http://androidforums.com/android-lounge/181663-android-phone-call-recording-function.html
Addition:

Acrobits Softphone
Google Voice (only for incoming calls?)
Addition:
List of traditional 3rd party call recording services:
Call Trunk (Canada)
Google Voice (US) (only for incoming calls?)
Rectel (UK)
Are you shure, that call recording works on HTC Desire with MIUI ROM without need to turn on loudspeaker?
I think you need to turn your speaker on for miui rom for the call recording to work.
Ooops... I gathered the information from other threads and I don't actually have the devices myself to test, I'll remove them.
THX for the headsup
LOL someone says he/she willing pay $250-750 for coding such app

Have you tested? I will buy one if it works.
rvoix is running half on htc legend g6
Thistime i use rvoix on my htc legend (blayo 0.7 rom). but it only works in my car with bluetooth handsfree. if you use it over the normal mic/speaker it creates noises, that you can't understand anything anymore.
i think the dev of rvoix should invest a little time to get it running on htc legend, because it works perfectly over the bluetooth handsfree...it seems possible.

Yep, Defy with Chinese 2.2 ROM.
Read that XT701 also has this function but I don't think it's officially available outside SE Asia nor did I have a phone to test it personally.

Thank you. could you please give me a link where someone writes about call recording on defy with chinese rom . i searched in xda-dev-defy-forum and didn't find anything about it.
Google "xda defy call recording" yields this...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865220
Andy, Google Voice now only provides recording of INcoming calls. Not outgoing, unless they changed the service again.
Half a glass is better than none, but it is still half a glass.
Seems like there is no call recorder that works on my Atrix, I have to go back to my ancient but venerable Treo to do that. That ought to embarass SOME programmer into coding...
I'd like to point out that recording phone calls without the other party's consent is illegal in some states and countries. Just a friendly heads up.

Samsung updates Kies in anticipation of Android 2.3 for Galaxy S phones

The race to Android 2.3 updates is on. Yesterday several users started reporting that Samsung was rolling out a new version of Kies, the desktop software used to update Galaxy S phones. We were wondering what the latest release was for and it appears this update is laying the groundwork for Android 2.3 updates of the Galaxy S.
In a Facebook posting Samsung said, “You need this update to be able to get the 2.3.2 update to your Samsung Galaxy S, Vibrant, Fascinate. 2.3.2 will be worldwide but carriers will be delayed.”
Samsung previously said on their Romanian Facebook page that the Android 2.3 update would be out by the end of March. That has yet to occur, but it looks like things are on schedule now that the new Kies is out.
Just as we saw with the Android 2.2 updates, the international versions of the Galaxy S should be updated long before the US versions of the phone. The delays might have been the carriers fault, but Samsung took a real beating since they arrived so long after the competition.
Hopefully this time around Samsung will work more closely with the US carriers to ensure their phones are updated in a timely manner.
http://drippler.com/samsung-galaxy-...utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=facebook-pages
I am positively shocked that they mentioned the US versions on Facebook. Just checked Mini Kies for the Vibrant and it is updating.
If Sammy makes this happen soon (official Gbread) it will go a long way in ensuring repeat customers.
Would be nice...but some of us just got froyo...naturally I want it though.

Would be nice...
What are the benefits of the update? All I've seen is speed. I don't need download speed - I use wifi and don't download much anyway - just a few apps. The speed I want is processor. Read my PDF files and books faster. I might not want it as the phone is working just the way I want it. How do you refuse it in that case?
I just looked it up and the only interesting thing is VOIP. I had that on a Nokia.
1. New user interface has a simple and attractive theme in black background, which is designed to give a vivid look while being power efficient too. Menu and settings are changed for ease of navigation.
Don't care - use my own photos as wallpaper
2. Redesigned soft keyboard is optimized for quicker and accurate text input and editing. And the word being edited and dictionary suggestion is vivid and easy to read.
Don't care about that, either.
3. Multi touch key cording to input number and symbols without changing input mode
PITA on the Blackberry
4. Selection of word and copy/paste made easy.
Don't use
5. Improved power management through application control.
Might be interesting
6. Provide user awareness on power consumption. Users can view how the battery is used and which consume more.
Same as above
7. Internet calling – supports SIP calls to other users with SIP account
Very interesting - But Skype over wifi works
8. Support Near-field communication (NFC) – high frequency high speech data transfer within a short range (10 cm). This will be useful feature in m commerce.
No
9. A new download manager facility that supports easy storage and retrieval of downloads
Have no problem now.
10. Support for multiple cameras
Mostly use separate camera - As far as I'm concerned, the 5mp camera in the Nokia C6 was superior to the one in the SGS4G.
I use the phone as a PDA/phone. I don't see much there to benefit me.

[Kernel] ardatdat kernel v1.7b1 & b2 beta released [CWM] (2012-05-02)

Dear all,
I am going to start a new post for the new 1.7b1 & 1.7b2 beta such that all members are able to see them.
First, specially thanks to UnknownzD for providing the source codes for Voodoo Sound enhancements to Galaxy R. You are the man!
Now, after posting the v1.7 beta kernel to some Chinese forum, it is discovered that kernel based on ZCLD4 will cause 'auto rotation' malfunction on non-Chinese ROMs (such as XWLA4, ZSKK5, etc...)
It is also proved that kernel based on XWLA4 will not cause any 'auto rotate' problems, but it does not support 2-way voice recording & off-machine alarm.
So, I have revised 2 versions of v1.7 beta. Both version inherits all features from v1.6 & Voodoo Sound enhancements.
v1.7b1 (beta 1) (based on ZCLD4 Chinese kernel)
==================================
- Well support for Chinese based ROM (such as ZCKK1, ZCLA1, ZCLD4, etc...)
- Will not cause any 'auto rotate' problems on Chinese based ROM, but will have rotate problem on European ROMs
- Support 2-way voice recording & off-machine alarm (Chinese-based ROMs only)

v1.7b2 (beta 2) (based on XWLA4 European kernel)
==================================
- Well support for non-Chinese based ROM (such as XWLAL4, ZSKK5, etc...)
- Will not cause any 'auto rotate' problems on any ROM
- Doesn't support 2-way voice recording & off-machine alarm

Please feel free to choose the one that suits your ROM.
v1.6 could be found there:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1620900
Again, I need some time to organize the source codes, please accept my apology as I am really busy in my work. I will push it to github once I organize them & am free.
Finally, flash at your own risk Please feed back how you feel and don't hesitate to give me a 'thank' if the kernel works great for you
** The source code has just been pushed to my github. Please kindly share our knowledge to make this phone better!
reserved for future use...
Files are uploaded Thanks for waiting ~!

Actually 2 way calling recording can be enabled on XW firmware as well, you just need to enable the config in the defconfig file. However as I believe it may conflict with the voodoo sound, I have hold the process of enabling it.

Even if it could be enabled, there is one great feature of "off-machine" alarm in Chinese based ROM only. This feature allows you to set an alarm and then you shutdown your phone (while keeping your cable charging the phone). Just before 2 minutes before the alarm, the phone will be turned on automatically and the alarm will ring!
For example, the time now is 10:00, you set an alarm at 10:10 and you turn off your phone. At around 10:08, the phone will boot up automatically! And the alarm rings precisely at 10:00!
You can try that feature using Chinese based ROM such as ZCKK1, ZCLA1, ZCLD3, ZCLD4, etc... Thanks

btw I have another performance boost for your kernel build.
Check here for more info :
https://github.com/UnknownzD/I9103_XW_Kernel/commit/5272617914704968960e16e68e6a62150434c5a9
You need to add the following things to KBUILD_CFLAGS
-O2 -march=armv7-a -mtune=cortex-a9 -mcpu=cortex-a9 -D__ARM_ARCH_7__ -D__ARM_ARCH_7A__ -D__VFP_FP__ -D__ARM_HAVE_VFP -mfloat-abi=softfp -mfpu=vfpv3-d16
That will boost the performance as generating the best code for our device. For example, enabling hardware floating point calculation is already a boost for our device because it is not enabled by default.

That will boost the performance as generating the best code for our device. For example, enabling hardware floating point calculation is already a boost for our device because it is not enabled by default.

Thanks! That's great

Thanks

well I will try to port that off-machine alarm to XW build later Now I need to head off for making my own ROM with specific build.prop and init script that can boost performance as I don't want to see two people working on 2 'different' kernel with same patches (wasted too much resources and those users are hard to follow).
I have actually made a ROM for I9003 before with a OC kernel which has boosted the performance better than the I9000. However I didn't release it on the xda as I have found that the I9003 forum is like a mess. And I am going to make all those patches I have made for I9003 ROM back to I9103 ROM so that further boost the android VM performance.
btw after 4~6 full days of work (I have made all my kernels and findings in these days), I need to head off for playing some games now
btw, watch out the SGS3 live stream boardcast as well!

YES! I am waiting for the live broadcast, haha, same as you!
By the way, the kernel source has been organized (by merging some similar commits & re-ordering) and just pushed to github!
You may find it here:

Well Samsung Galaxy S3 has nothing special after all, except for the wireless charger + quad core CPU
All those other technologies they made on the phone are already mentioned or developed for other devices already.
For example, the pre-capture thing and best photo technology were used in camera like Nikon J1.
Edited : Okay, I have chosen to take back what I said above just because the SGS3 gets a wolfson chipset WM1811 (although it is not good as the WM8994 used in our phone), however WM1811 should still shine for better audio output as well as getting the next version of voodoo sound, Kaudio kernel module. Read more about the difference between WM1811 and WM8994, and follow supercurio post there :

Kernal looks and works great.
But how do u enable Voodoo ??
It is enabled by default in the kernel already, just plug in a headphone to listen the difference plx. Btw check my kernel thread for the voodoo sound apk if you want to chech whether voodoo is enabled or not.
Sent from my GT-I9103 using XDA

Thanks for link to the app.
NOW i can HEAR the difference.
Thanks to UnknownzD, artdatdat and u.
I do see that there is a great difference in the amplifier for the headphones. Great work guys, Thanks a ton.
However, the Bass Boost does not seem to be working, I do not hear any difference, am I missing anything here?!!
Cheers!

I will check whether the bass boost works or not with my high-end earbud, so if that occurs I will make some patches and test in my kernel and then make a pull request to ardatdat kernel to fix the problem.
