Im checking out kuwei, barnes & noble, and other chinese models, all under $300. I would like an ipad but cannot afford. I would like a device that can eventually upgrade to a honeycomb developer rom when available... What are some developer favorites that are under $300?

G2 is a great device that is sub $200 if you look around on eBay. (my current device)
other than that, the best bang for the buck in your price range is the MyTouch 3G Slide. (my previous device). it has CM support. 'nuf said
Both of these phones are great. But if you're going to spend $150, I suggest you spend the extra $20-$30 and get a G2. It's much more powerful.
no black friday deals I know of...
Nexus one is sub $200 now too. I wouldn't recommend buying one though. It's dated and there are problems with the power button...
Motorola cliq is another great device. One of the best dev communities i've seen. Very nice and helpful people over at simply-android. they have helped me out a lot.
But hardware wise, one of the other 2 phones is a much better deal.
EDIT: sorry, just read the part where this thread is about tablets.
disregard everything i just said
Kindle fire is going to be one of the hottest tablets to buy this shopping season. and it matches your price range perfectly, if you look around
I've heard Best Buy is to have the ASUS Transformer TF101 for $250 over black friday.

Just read an article that pointed to Best Buy for a new Asus 10 inch android tablet with better specs than our beloved gTabs for $400. And... it's already got honeycomb.
Asus Eee Pad Transformer tablet
Acer Iconia A500
The Asus Transformer is delayed for a U.S. launch now until the end of this month due to supply shortages.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/13/asus-apologizes-for-eee-pad-transformer-delay-it-wont-detail-u/
I *really* hope they can release it at $400, the recent video preview (Via Slashgear) made it pretty attractive (to me at least).
This is one of the devices I was eyeing. Allegedly it has an IPS screen as well. Anyone who's read my posts long enough knows how badly I want an IPS screen.
Yep, the Eee Pad Transformer looks like a winner to me.

I guess we'll have to wait for someone here to get one in their hands and do a proper review.
If it gets love from the creative folks at xda then I may sell off my second gTab and pick one of these up once it's released to the public.
and im now disappointed in my gtab before i even get it, thanks alot!
hopefully it cant be rooted =D
At this price I'm interested as well. I have a couple of friends who are interested in my Gtablet with the Vegan rom and accessories for around $300. If Honeycomb isn't available for the Gtab by the time this comes out I may make the switch.
Isn't it being released April 6th? 5 days?!?!

Don't be. It's $285 (assuming you are a Woot! user) and this ASUS device has NOT been released yet. It may not show up for a month, or longer.
The GTAB will be dated one day, but that's going to happen for all electronics, it's unavoidable.
That dock (that basically turns the tablet into a laptop) looks sweet! Even though the price for the dock hasn't been announced (at least not to my knowledge) I want it.
Also, the fact the tablet comes with an HDMI port on it rather than relying on the dock is also pretty cool.
It will be very interesting indeed to get the review when someone here can get their hands on it.
If I can confirm this will be available for $400 @ Best Buy next week, I will be putting my gtab on craigslist ASAP and coughing up the $115 extra for IPS screen with honeycomb!

Don't be, man. If you always want the latest and greatest, you will never buy anything at all. Ever. With the number of companies in the world and how fast they are moving in research and development, whatever you buy will always be outdated.
Personally, I think the gtab is good for me for at least a few years.

I would wait to see the reviews. The Motorola Xoom (honeycomb) out of the box wasn't as zippy as our gTabs.
And besides, you got a helluva deal on your gTAB purchase compared to early adopters like me that paid the $400 on them in November/December of last year. Who knows, if you get your gTab and put a custom ROM on it (I'm running VEGAn 5.1.1) you may decide to wait a while before you fork out that extra $115.

the only flaw for the gtab is the screen viewing, which im sure a IPS screen would resolve
ill be watching this closely. thanks for the heads up. and with roebeet on-board, the possibilities are endless.
no pressure.
I love Android, and especially the community that every device has.
I currently have an Epic 4G Touch (Sprint's GSII) and I have never owned a tablet.
This Thanksgiving break I visited my cousins and lo behold, practically all of them had an iPad 2. It was a very convenient thing to have around, I never really saw a tablet as a useful item. But I see that tablets are really neat now, it's like a phone, but bigger and not as heavy and clunky as a laptop.
And with today's web based world, it's really convenient to have a tablet on your coffee table to just use when chatting with friends, family gatherings or just watching tv and you need to look up something on the web. Or a device to watch Netflix or Hulu on, but your phone's screen is just too small and it's weird to hold it. Blah blah, useful features could go on.
Anyways, I missed the BestBuy sale for $250 unfortunately, and Gamestop is sold out for $300. But on Craiglist, a lot of folks are selling them for $330 unopened because they are bastards and bought them during black friday to make a profit.
I know the Transformer Prime is coming out on 12/8 for $500 but I simply can't afford that. Do you guys think that the regular Transformer will drop down in Price after the Prime comes out?
So I am left with multiple dilemmas:
1. Buy brand new for $330 off craiglist
2. Wait for possible price drop
3. 3D monitor + nVidia 3D vision kit
4. Solid State Drive
When I look into Android products I look into the modding community for the device on XDA, and it looks like the Eee pad has the best one.
So, should I get one or no?
If you could provide me with a link to buy one for under $300, I will buy it without hesitation.
Thank you
I can't give you a link, but I will tell you that you will certainly love your Eee Pad. Keep looking. This week has a lot of good internet deals. You're bound to find something. Otherwise offer someone on craigslist around $315 and see if they bite. Even at $330, its still a great value.

As an owner of a transformer I can personally say that it's a great device. It does everything for me (including the stuff you listed) and i'm not sure how much a performance boost the quad core will actually bring (to me i think the tegra 3 is an overkill in processor power).
I recall asus saying that when the transformer prime is released, the old transformer price will drop to 250 and 350 for the 16 and 32gb models (respectively). Don't quote me on this though.
However, if your interested in the dev/modding of the transformer you may be disappointed. I believe all the models you'll find in the stores today will have a locked kernel which means you can't root the device (until the xda dev's figure a way out)

In fact there's a one click root for all models in the dev section
New models can be rooted now. There is a link in the dev section somewhere. If you can wait untill the Prime comes out I will have 2 32gb for sale. Already rooted, with or without docks. In fact when the Prime comes out like the other poster said I bet you can get a good deal. I was planning on selling mine for 300 without dock when the time comes.

If you buy a transformer retail you can always get a price adjustment if it does drop. Bestbuy extended their return policy for 60 days during christmas. Just an idea.

Save your money and go to Best Buy and price match it with Game Stop for $299. I just bought the wife one for Christmas.
There will be a lot of these for sale as people trade up to the Prime, however I would be very cautious of the Craig's list ones advertised as new in box. They are more likely to be used with the box. The same thing happened when the current transformer replaced the Viewsonic Gtab. Once the prime comes out, you should be able to get a good used TF for $250 or so with some acc.

You should be able to find one for $300. I bought one (excellent condition, barely used) last week with dock for $350 and there seem to be a few at around 320 without dock. Wait a week or so, people who have it at 320+ will not end up selling them anyway and when the prime comes out they'll go in the 250-300 range pretty quickly.
Best buy models are tf101-x1 and everywhere else they are the original tf101-a1. Best buy did this to prevent price matching the device because Walmart and others sold the a1 model, good luck on price matching

Just to revisit the original question for a moment, the SSD purchase might be a compelling alternative. It depends how you use the PC you would be putting it in, but they can pretty dramatically speed up a lot of tasks. Disk I/O is quite often the bottle neck in modern systems, and going from a spinning platter and arm to no moving parts could have a dramatic effect. Again though it all depends on how powerful your system is (if it can take full advantage of the IO speed gains), and what types of tasks you use it for.
Of course the flip side of that is: you may end up using your PC a LOT less if you pick up a Transformer, Prime or original. I know I do. Between my blackberry (email, instant messaging) and transformer (web surfing, google reader for rss feeds, and occasional angry birds or similar simple gaming), I barely have to use my laptop any more.
I got mine during black friday at best buy too. I was hestitant at first and wasn't sure about the rooting because of it being a newer and different model but this tablet is amazing. I love the internet, FLASH!, the apps, and the widgets. I hooked up to my tv the other day to show my roomates and they were blown away. I already rooted mine too just need to overclock it. This is is my first tablet and android device. The camera isn't that great but I did not get it for the camera. I recommend the best buy way. Buy it now and when the prime comes out you can return it to best buy and get the prime.
If I play with the prime and it seems worth it I will probably do that. However, if you want a first generation one there will probably be lots of people selling them on here. Totally worth the black friday mess and being short for rent. Also, if you use your phone as a hot spot with it it's even more amazing. There are plenty of apps to enjoy even without wi-fi and spotify or rdio for music.
I atually do use my laptop less now. Only thing I dont like is the laggyness of the keyboard strokes on this site. I am hoping overclocking will solve it. Dolphin and stock are both fast but I like dolphin the best so far. I'm falling in love with the touch gestures. Made one just for XDA
There are a couple of ways to get it for $299. Call around to the local game stops and see if they have the transformer in stock. When you called best buy you gave too much information.

I don't think so, the infinity will replace the Prime not the TF300. The 300 is replacing the TF101. So, we should see a price drop on the Prime model if there's still anymore out there.

Yeah, but if it currently costs $320 to build ( just a made up number. I have no idea.), then they will lose 200 million dollars a week according to your 10 million a week projection.

Now I'm interested. How does one just go and lower production costs? Most manufacturers have the production lines set to go as quickly as possible while maintaining a quality standard (some companies not maintaining).
Although I did just remember that bulk buying components saves a lot of money. I clearly need to think this through before I try to debate this. my apologies.

I hope this is appropriate but was wondering if any of the Devs for this device plan on doing any work for the Nexus 4 ? I have been on the My Touch since the day it came out and have finally purchased me a new Nexus 4 and honestly It would be awesome to see some of your work over there as well.
My son is inheriting the My Touch 4g so I will not be completely leaving but something honest feels strange about moving on from this phone. Don't get me wrong I am way excited about the Nexus 4 experience though
Thank you all again for everything you have brought to the My Touch World!!!
The N4 has tons of developers. No need to bring some from a device that should have been dead a year ago.
I am not sure I understand what your saying ? My Touch should have been dead a year ago so there's no point in adding a Nexus 4 as a phone that a DEV would build for ? I would think a lot of DEVS write for more than one phone anyway?

There is always a newer, more powerful phone right around the corner. Quite frankly a LOT of people are sick to death of HTC's locked down bootloaders, HTC Dev, and slow updates. While the Nexus 4 is simple, it's quite literally made for nerds. Unlocking the bootloader is as simple as a single fastboot command. From there it's gravy. To each his own, though. The beauty of Android is choice.

The Nexus 4 is a "QUALITY" device.
The price is low b/c Google sells their devices at prices close to how much it costs to make the device. The phone is actually more expensive at other retailers than the $299 8gb model you saw on Google Play. The phone is $599 if you buy it from Best Buy for example.
As far as "you get what you pay for", that can be interpreted to be negative for something "cheap" and something "expensive"
For example: Buying a crappy 10in, off-brand no name Android tablet w/ an 800x480 resolution and a dual core 1ghz processor for maybe $79.99
Second example: Buying an apple product. Nuff said.
But while we're talking about apple, I should mention that the iPhone 5 costs apple roughly ~$200 to make. Let that soak in.

Since your therory is that the Nexus 4 is so much more valuable than $299.00. I have a great ideal for you.
Buy 100 of them at $299 with tax and shipping the final price should be around $350 per phone. Total price= $35000.00
List them on Ebay for 599.00 plus free shipping and no taxes Total sales would be $59900.00 - $6000 for shipping and fees Grand Total Sales =53900.00
Your profit would be $18,900.00 How could you turn down that much easy money? Hell if you can't do a 100. Do 5 that would be almost a $1000.00 profit
Some how I don't think your theroy would work. I just seen a brand new in the box on a buy it now for $325.00 shipping included.
A value of an object is what market will bear. Nothing else. The reason Google is selling them so cheap is they found one of the cheapest manufacturers to make them. Do you actually think that they would be selling at $299 if Samsung or Htc made them?
Nothing to learn here other than a Nexus 4 is worth about $299.00. In a few months $150.00

Except that the GNex sold for $299. Who made that again? Oh, right. Samsung.

You are completely fixating on an irrelevant point. All he is saying is just because it is priced competitively, doesn't mean its a low quality device. You need to understand that you can't judge the quality of a device by the markup a cell phone carrier may make. For example, T-Mobile charges 413 dollars for a Galaxy S2, no way in hell that STILL costs that much to build a plastic phone, but, by your logic, the build quality would be better and it would be a WAY better phone. See what i am getting at? Don't go around trying to be argumentative and douchey, i saw your post on the B.S. thread. Take it down a notch.

This is what I said "Bottom line for me is QUALITY. And I just don't see it in the Nexus 4" And I still don't.
I'm hearing rumors that the back cracks around the camera and it's easily scratched. If that's the case I don't consider that a quality build. Really don't want a phone that looks two years old after 6 months.
As far as cost. Other people brought that into the equation. Which was really irrelevent because my statement was always about build quality. Period! But I respo
nded because i felt I was getting smoke blown up my A** It doesn't matter if the phone is $299 or $599 if it has issues I don't want it.
This is just one of the articles I've read.

All phones have issues. HTC can definitely attest to that. Never seen one of theirs that didn't. There is no perfect phone.
My N4 hasn't cracked because I keep a bumper on it and my back isn't scratched because I keep a clear protector on it. The phone still looks amazing. Problem solved. By the way, I work outside, every weekday, regardless of the weather. I have zero issues with the quality of the build of this device and I have it in my hand every day. I also came from a myTouch 4G, so I know what solid build quality feels like.
