are you running the rooted stock os or Android Revolution?
If you are running the rooted stock rom, it goes in a different path;
/system/customize/resource and it needs to be renamed to ATT_bootanimattion.zip. (in zipped format of course )

I'm running RCMIX V3.4 ROTATE.
UPDATE: I've tried placing the bootanimation.zip into the /system/customize/resources/ directory, and also tried changing the name to ATT_bootanimation.zip ... still not working. Also I read somewhere that the files have to be set to store instead of compress when zipping... still not working.

This is true If you post the files I will get it to work and tell you how to do it.

24p works, but 15p works better with this phone. Try changing your animation to 15 fps. At 24 you have just a little over a second right now. Also the phone may be looking for the second folder to read from which you don't have. This phone is a little different from the DHD. This is how the original test document reads from the att original boot. "480 800 15 p 1 45 android p 1 45 ATT". The first folder is the play through and the second is the loop. Mine reads as follows. "480 800 15 p 1 0 part0 p 0 10 part1" It works. When you make the two folders and the test document, use something like 7-zip to zip them. Select store as the method. Name it ATT_bootanimation. Leave off the ".zip" at the end because windows will end up giving it a double extension and your linux phone will not read the ".zip.zip". Hope this helps you out.

thanks for helpin guys....
i edited the desc file to show the same as yours, and created a second folder (part1) and placed the files inside and still nothing...
the bootanimation.zip file is attached.... its nothing special really.. just my initials...
just tryin to personalize my inspire a bit more...
and again thanks for helpin

i saw your other thread about animaitons... if needed, i created a .gif animation for ya.

Try this
the first one is flashable through cwm just boot into recovery.
or if you wish to copy and paste the zip is below.
also I have found that 15 fps tends to be a little glitchy so I set it at 30

Also, just to let you know, in the second folder, make sure the file numbers actually continue from where they left off in the first folder. So if you had 00000 - 00029 for the file numbers in the first folder, then the second folder would go from 00030 - 00058, as an example. It looks like mudknot sent you some variations. Let us know how it works out.

All I'm gettin is the blank screen... I tried a wipe and restore then flash, also tried a new Rom install then flash.... still nothing.
And BTW, how do you make the boots flashable? Just curious.

What Rom are you using? You will have to write an update script to make them flash-able through cwm.

If you are using AR, wouldn't the boot animation be located in data/local? I am not sure because I have not used his in a few weeks. Just trying to give some ideas for this.

That is where my update script places it, since there isn't a lot of people running stock rooted roms.

I tried the stock rooted Rom, but the restriction was still on the hotspot feature... I jump around to different roms now n then.... never know what ill decide to use... lol... currently I have backups for Android revolution, coredroid, coredroid with kama kernel, and a couple others I think...

with stock rooted roms the path will be resources>customize just a little fyi. I haven't gotten back around to messing with your boot animation to see if I can get it working, I am trying to get four versions of a Inspire 4g bios boot working at the moment.

It's cool, take ur time... its no rush.

Got it working... well sorta... the animation comes up and does one full rotation and then stops... I'm thinkin its not going to the second folder to start the loop.... I attached the zip so you could check it out when ya get time...

[BOOT ANIMATION] Blue Matrix Code

Howdy all, I'm sure this might have been done before however I have been bored today since my gf is on vacation with her family and made a custom boot image for my nexus. I'm going to try to add Nexus text in there somewhere, once I find one that I like. Its very simple and very small, I've just always been a big fan of the matrix
Anyway its fullscreen not partial, blue matrix code. Its in a zipfile so it must be pushed to the phone. Remember to back-up your current if you push this file.
how?

Unless you are running the kang o rama froyo rom, make a folder called bootanimation on your sd card and put the zip in there.
Or using root explorer navigate to data/local and paste in there, be sure and back up your stock or already custom image.

dude how do i make a boot image? i was thinking about making one like a bomb going off...or pacman or something
Its rather easy actually, all your image files must be .png format and in a folder how you want them to run, then you need a desc.txt stating resolution, frames per second and if you want it to loop or not, as well as the folder name you want it to run, all that must then be zipped up with no compression and placed in data local

I went through all these steps, but I still can't get it to work. This is the first time I'm trying to change my boot animation so I might be missing something.
I unzipped the file and placed it in data/local using root explorer. I'm running stock froyo with custom recovery.

[Q] Boot animations i9000

Hey guys, I have been told to post this here as I have not made enough posts..
I tried to change my boot animation, by placing the bootanimation.zip file in both /system/media and /data/local and all still plays the Samsung boot logo although with no sound.. So searched through the forums here and everyone tells you that you need a custom rom to get it to work if your phone has the /system/media/bootsamsung.qmg file...
I then cooked a package from romkitchen and installed that but have the same issue, even though I can see the bootanimation.zip file in /system/media/ I can also still see the bootsamsung.qmg as well.
I have only just got this phone about a week ago, so have searched thoroughly, in case I was missing something but i don't think I am..
Can someone help me with what’s going on?
No one able to help me with this one?
Hm you should easily be able to change bootanimation with the rom kitchen.
Remember that you can not change the white text at the beginning of the boot.
I think the files stay there, they dont get removed, just another one gets used if its present, if not the stock animation will be used.

Thanks for the reply,
I'm not sure if this helps, I have cooked a new one today and applied and it said to keep this log incase I have issues.

I can see the file is in the folder, it just does not seem to take affect.
I am assuming that people have got these working on i9000's before and it's just me..
I still have not managed to get this working, starting to think that I am tripping..
All it seems to do is kill the samsung boot sound.
Anyone else got any ideas?

Do you use a stock rom?
This probably doesn't work because your android is not looking for the bootanimation.zip.
Custom ROMs have a modded start up script which tells the system to look for the .zip file.
I am using a rom from rom kitchen..
I have changed it again since I made post above but still a custom rom..

Did you delete the boot animation file out of system/media,&put the new animation zip AND rename it to the same name as the one you deleted?
Sent from my EVO 4G using XDA Premium App
I have tried selecting the bootanimation from RK, and also downloading one from elsewhere and replacing the one that is there.
Both have the same effect..
Weird,I had trouble switching mine too. The only way I've been able to do it is using the app called File Explorer. It's like 10 dollars on the market, but I found it for free. I put the new zip on my card, then file explorer/system/media, delete the boot animation zip, paste the new zip & rename it to the name of the zip that was there. It's worked every time. Flashing a new splash screen is a little different....

I will try this again now and see how i go..
Just to clarify the splash screen is the white text right?
I am not trying to change that just the colored samsung animation.
The splash screen is the first screen you see when you turn your phone on. It doesn't move, & most often just says the name of the phone. Then the boot animation comes on, it moves & plays some kind of music. Do you have file explorer? If not, don't buy it,I can help you get it for free.

I have Root Explorer that I use to access that location.
I have tried another bootanimation from this spot -http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905538
I tried both of the sizes for the AndroidParticles2 and set the permissions to rw-r-r
(Renaming to bootanimations.zip and placing in system\media)
but still the samething happens.
Yeah, my bad,I meant Root Explorer. But it had to be bootanimation.zip take the s off

Sorry typo, I don't have the s on my i9000.
Well that's how I change mine. I did download a particle ring android (blue) and couldn't get it to work right. Seems to me like you're doing everything right. There's one other option I know of. Download a free program called android flasher.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794638
You should be able to flash boot animations & splash screens with no problem. It is a .rar, so if you don't have the program you'll need to download winrar or something similar to extract & install the files. Google it, the program is free.

Try this one, I had to modify the video a little bit and I added the sgt. peppers mp3 to it, it should work.
If you don't like this song, or want to change it, you should be able to do it easily (if you change the song, make sure you call it "sgtpeppers" even though it will be a different song, unless you change the song name in the desc.txt file).
Apply through bootstrap, do not rename to bootanimation.zip.

As someone who pioneered sound on the X, I would just like to point out that sounds work on ANY rom, as long as you do it the right way.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=F7V2IPS4
At that link is a .zip that should help out everybody.
Basically its an empty installable .zip that is installed easily through clockwork. You just need to place your audio file, and bootanimation.zip folder in the .zips system/media folder. As long as your desc.txt is correctly formatted, and bootanimation.zip is done properly then all that needs to be done is the bootanimation.zip in your phones data/local needs no be erased, or change the name to anything.zip.
i have included a file that goes into system/bin that *should* enable sound on any rom. It has worked perfectly through stock, rubix, and liberty..
Basically:
Unzip file
Place bootanimation.zip and audio.mp3 (or whatever you called it in you desc.txt) in the system/media
HHighligt the meta-inf and system folders, add them to archive, or zip them depending on which program you have.
ENSURE you set the compression to store, and the filetype to .zip. Name doesnt matter as this is just the install file.
Put on sdcard, clockworkmod, install, reboot and finally enjoy.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=356483&d=1278555629
that should be a file that allows to to check your animation on your computer, to see if u fudged up the desc.txt (which is real easy).
Just unzip the folder, open the file, bootanimationpreview1.5.exe then /file open your completed animation. If it plays, it will work on your phone, if not, the desc.txt is fudged.
Good luck all

[BOOT ANIMATION] V2.0 - Retrograde Sensation (Hero is back...)

Like some people, I missed the little 'droid boot animation from my HTC Hero.
So I've made one for my Sensation...
As you can see from the YouTube clip above, it's a re-work of the original Hero boot
It's available to download from here : https://sites.google.com/site/techbobbins/home/articles/retrograde-sensation
It also incorporates the black HTC "quietly brilliant" graphic already available on XDA (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193798&highlight=black+htc) - so credit where that is due (mexxxico)
Just put the .zip & .mp3 into /data/local (or just the .zip if you don't want the noise!)
NOTE: This animation was created for use (initially) with ARHD 1.1.8 - if your bootanimation.zip goes elsewhere, put it (and the mp3) in the relevant location.
splash.img is obviously just the splash image, and instructions for getting that up are here...
UPDATE: I have now (30/08/2011) released V2.0, in which I have :
updated the main animation to be reflected (although I have not yet made the 'droid character reflect!)
reduced the .zip by 176K (size matters!)
amended the timings slightly to (IMO) better match the sound
removed the 'non-reflected' splash image - only the reflected one is available now
NB: Someone noted the reflected text is hard to see - it's as close as I could get it to the Hero one, and thus is very faded - if you tilt the top of your phone toward your eyes and "look down" on the phone, you'll definitely see it
Hope you like it
pushed the bootanimation only, it works great and looks great! thanks so much!
Welcome
When I get some more time, I'll add the faded mirror text under Sensation (like it was on the Hero originally) - but for a first stab, I'm happy
Ow, so lovely Thanks you made this, mate! That was the only thing I missed about my Hero!
Great work! Best boot animation for sensation so far!

If you are rooted (which you presumably are), get an adb shell up and run
Code:
find / -name *animation.zip
It will return any file ending animation.zip (such as bootanimation.zip) with the full path. If you have a TMOUS for example, I believe they put their file in the resource dir, whereas ARHD lives in /data/local
Find your existing one, and put your chosen ones in that location with the same name - just backup the old one first

mp3 file
hi,ive got the bootanimation to work but im finding it very very hard to get the sound working also, ive tried putting it in data/local didin't work...ive now got bootanimation in system/customize/resource and works PERFECTLY,i've tried puttin the mp3 file in system/media/ringtones........NO JOY........i've set permission to RW-R-R. Please could u tell me what i've done wrong........THANKS
It seems some custom roms vary.
Mine (ARHD) is quite happy in /data/local - called android_audio.mp3
Try calling it android.mp3, and putting in the resource directory.
Also, you don't need to reboot to try it, you can simply run adb shell, and run "bootanimation" from the # prompt
This thread (here) shows the anim being renamed as well, so it's a bit rom dependant!
Happy hunting though!

Very good boot. Any plan to update?
If you do, any chance you can modify the splash/boot so that when transition is smoother?
Also, the Quitly Brilliant "Sound" is a little late compared to the animation.
Does the build.prop determine default file name and location for resources like splashes and boot animations?

Can't modify the splash/boot transition timing...
The splash.img is a ROM item (BMP converted directly from one of the JPGs in the anim), and the 1st graphic frame of the animation is the same dimensions/image (barring reflection) - it's how the phone O/S cuts over....
I should be able to work on the sound/sync - it's the exact audio file from the Hero, which I don't want to play with - so I may be able to shorten (or speed up ) the Sensation fade out so the audio is in quicker.
re: updating in general - I do plan to, but am a bit busy atm!

Does the build.prop determine default file name and location for resources like splashes and boot animations?

Nope! I don't know where it's defined, other than in the OS.
Thank you much!

Automatic Splash Image Creator (PNG to Flashable Zip in One Click!)

This DOES NOT work on the i9300/note 2 and never will, please stop asking about it.
Thanks to the work of invisiblek and some Google searching I was able to come up with the following tool:
This tool takes a 720x1280 .PNG image and converts it to a recovery-flashable splash screen in a single click.
A video so you can see what this changes: http://youtu.be/XXaBJTVQ2Sw
How to use:
Making your own splash screen:
0) Download and extract the .zip file
1) Make a 720x1280 .png image you want to be your splash screen (this comes in-between the boot animation and the quick Samsung logo flash)
2) Name it "initlogo.png" without the quotes
3) Place it in the PNGtoConvert folder
4) Run the "PNG-2-RLE.bat" file
5) You are finished! A "flashthisinrecovery.zip" will appear in the same directory as the batch files. Just flash it in recovery and enjoy your new splash screen!
Note: If you want the .RLE and not the whole flashable, it can be found as "initlogo.rle" in the "kernel" folder or you can pull it from the kernel folder inside the "flashmeinrecovery.zip"
Converting an .RLE that you made back to a .PNG for editing:
0) Download an extract the .zip file
1) Copy the "initlogo.rle" you want to convert to a .PNG to the RLEtoConvert folder. It must be named "initlogo.rle"
2) Run the "RLE-2-PNG.bat"
3) PNG will be in the PNGtoConvert folder named "initlogoOUTPUT.png"
Other notes:
I have included the stock initlogo as a .PNG named "initlogoSTOCKBACKUP.png" for your reference/backup purposes. If you want to test the tool with it, remember to rename it to initlogo.png
If you flash a new kernel/rom the splash will revert to stock. To get it back, just flash the "flashmeinrecovery.zip" again. You don't need to reconvert it or anything.
This has only been tested with the d2_vzw but will work with all USA (S4 CPU) variants!

As always, even though this tool has been tested, nobody is responsible to damage to your phone except yourself!

No... there are too many windows binaries lol.
Sounds interesting, I just downloaded it and will play around with this tonight. I don't know why I never thought about personalizing my phone by just changing out my splash image with one of my own, but this sounds cool and will give me something to play around with tonight at work. Thanks, I will let you know how it works out for me. I appreciate your efforts and willingness to share your work.

I mean lets be honest it is really a minor thing and it shows for all of 5 seconds but it is still fun to change.
The Samsung thing is getting kind of old...just sayin.
Thanks Con

Note: the image I used wasn't 720x1280, does it have to be?

thanks for getting this done...it is not necessary, but it sure is cool...

It must be 720x1280. If you don't follow the directions (read Step #1) you shouldn't expect it to work!
i thanked you in the other post so i'll do it here too. thanks!
I love changing my splash screens and boot animations. when I came over from a long line of Evos everyone was looking at my like if I was crazy when I was wondering why we couldn't change our splash.
anyways, have you looked into changing the Samsung splash that comes before? I would like to replace both so that the image I created shows longer. don't need that Samsung logo flashing around

I don't think we can because it is a part of the bootloader which is signed so we can't modify it. On the gnex the app logome can change it but we can't due to the security. I am not sure if the other carrier models are signed but for Verizon I am pretty sure it's impossible.

Worked great. Here is my (extremely dumb) first splash haha.
Here is mine! We should make a thread with all of these btw. Maybe I'll go over to the theme section in a little bit and make one.
