Just purchased my first Android phone (Aria). I noticed that there is a lot of bloatware on this phone and that there are several things missing that I would like to have. Namely, I would like swype and active wallpapers, but I'm sure there is much more.
I have spent the day looking through webpages around how to install these things and remove the bloatware. The furthest I have gotten is to get the phone to root. I am a developer by trade but have just a little Java experience.
Can someone point me in the right direction on a primer on how to install these things and remove the bloatware?
I notice that people refer to different ROMS a lot. I would be interested in learning how to install these as well.
Sorry for the newb question, but I need a little context to be able to get to work.
Thanks!

for removing the bloatware you have a couple options now that you're rooted. You can install a custom ROM, search this forum for CM6.1.1 or Liberated for that. Installing these ROMs is detailed in their respective threads here in the Development section. Or to just remove the bloatware and keep your stock ROM search for a thread called "alternate method for removing bloatware". That details how to remove whatever system apps you dont want using adb.
As for Swype, thats a little more tricky. The only "legit" way to get it is to sign up for the beta at Swypes website, but the beta currently closed and who knows when it will open again. The other option is to just search google for someone that has a pirated version available for download. Swype beta is free so you shouldnt feel too bad for downloading it unofficially The newest version is 2.15.56. You will also need to search for a thread about sideloading apps to install swype if you dont want to install a custom ROM. As for live wallpapers on a stock aria, I have no idea on that one, sorry.
Good Luck

you can check out my guide HERE. plenty of info all in one spot. most of the information is based on what i have learned here at XDA. Great people, great community. keep it up guys
Wow, thanks for all the great information guys. I got a liberated ROM loaded last night but it is certainly a "learn as you go" exercise! The ROM I got was a stock minus the AT&T bloatware. Still haven't gotten live wallpapers to work yet, but I'll tinker with it as I get time.
That being said, which ROM do you guys feel is the best?
Thanks again, the last 3 or 4 posts have been extremely helpful!
congrats bro, i personally recommend the Liberated FR008, or CM6 FroYo. they are both excellent stable ROM's, and they both include live wallpapers too

My Rom of choice is definitely Cm6.1.1. But that's just my preference. The liberated roms are also great roms. Try them both. Regardless of which you choose both have excellent support from the community and the devs which its very important.

I agree with the previous two posts, you really can't go wrong with either of the two Froyo (Android 2.2) ROMs -- Liberated FR008 or CyanogenMod 6.1.x. One very important thing to remember is before you install any new ROMs, boot into Clockwork Recovery (With the phone off, hold the volume down and power button simultaneously). Once there, click on NANDROID and then make a back-up. After you make the back-up, reboot the phone and then copy the back-up folder to your computer just to be safe. It's in the Clockwork folder on your SD card. Once you've done that, you can feel comfortable installing different ROMs knowing that you have that back-up you can always return to if you run into problems.
Oh and one more thing, although it probably isn't totally necessary, I also delete data/Factory reset, delete cache and delete dalvik cache prior to installing a new ROM. This isn't necessary if you're just installing an update to the same ROM you already have running, but it's a pretty good way to ensure a trouble-free installation on a new ROM. The downside is that you have to install all your apps from scratch afterwards, but that can also be a good thing, allowing you to edit out the apps you really aren't using anyway.
Make sure all of your contacts are GOOGLE contacts before you start flashing ROMs as well. This will ensure that you don't lose any with a new ROM install. One of the ROMs (Cyanogen, I think) doesn't allow you to view contacts from the SIM card, so if you haven't moved them all to Google, you'll essentially lose them until you go back to a different ROM.

My vote would be either the international SGSII or one of its variants (I have i777 and things always seem to be booming over there).
Go get a Samsung phone, whichever is the latest one that AT&T has. They always have a TON of developers.
You know on the other hand you could just put in some time and learn and get some great ROMs in the process, lfaber06, cogery, and myself could really use the help, and it really is not all that hard, if you know anything about phones and flashing, and some about computers.
There is a thread in the development section on the tools needed to do this.

Hello all,
Has there been any word on any custom ROMs for this device? Things like MIUI, Cyanogenmod, for example. I wonder if maybe the ROM developers are waiting for official 7+ ICS builds to be available. Anyway, just wanted to check and make sure I'm not missing anything. Thanks!
Sent from my Droid Incredible using XDA App
Hello
i am going to be working on a custom ROM based on stock very soon but i think im the only one as not a lot of people see a point on working on honeycomb as ICS may be available in Q2 but we are not 100% sure as of yet.
and yes you are correct about the matter on waiting for the official ICS update but its also a matter of retrieving the sauce codes from Samsung inc. they seem determined not the share them with the public as they have made an ICS based tab similar to our tab in appearance but totally different as far as the hardware is concerned. The new Samsung galaxy tab 2 it a low grade tab with extreme affordability allowing everyone to taste the sweet ICS within haha
but now Google are saying their is a new version of android coming some time this year called android 5.0 jellybean so that may even boost the development on our device as everyone will be wanting some jellybeans in the tab + haha
kindest regards Joseph Marshall

thanks very much i have added a thanks to your thanks meter
MIUI and CM7 are both Android2.3 based (definitely not including MIUI v4), we already get superior firmwares.
Actually most custom roms are just modifications of the official firmware. There is only 1 feature I want and the official does not provide. Just to remove items in the recent task list by swiping/clicking X.
Galaxy tab 7.7 ROMS
Has anybody tried to flash one of the galaxy tab 7.7 roms? I think they have about 3 roms over there. It seems as if they're almost identical in hardware, probably the only difference is the screen size.
i tried flashing entire /framework folder and a lot of system apks. bootloop
then I tried flashing only phone and settings .apk, booted but wouldnt open FC.
p6200 Malaysia.
They would need to be ported over. I kind of remember how to do it with an HTC device (EVO and Incredible had almost the exact same hardware) but Samsung I'm not sure of. Need the Android kitchen up and running on your pc to do it. With an HTC device it was pretty much just taking the boot img file off the device with the ROM you want to port and putting it into the other device. There were step by step instructions somewhere on here but I can't find them.
No thanks, not putting anyones boot.img on my device. I'm sure it could be ported. Ive been checking them out, and they are very similar.
I do have dsixdas kitchen. But Im busy with other things at the moment.

For ICS to run on our tabs you would need an ICS kernel, I don't believe the current one will work. My Incredible had to use an EVO ICS kernel in order to use an ICS ROM. The kernel from the 7.7 could be modified since they have similar hardware but I believe you have to have the source code available to do it. I also do not know how to make kernels though there is a tutorial on xda somewhere.
I am also not familar with the my tab or Samsungs software architecture enough to experiment with mine just yet. The only way I know how to make ROMs is using a ROM.zip file found in an RUU, you can use a nandroid backup but they tend to be buggy. The android kitchen pulls the needed images (boot, system, recovery) out of the ROM.zip file (or nandroid backup) to use in building ROMs.
I would suggest that anyone who really wants ROMs for this thing head over to Chef Central on XDA and start learning how to do it themselves. It took me the better part of a day getting the andoid kitchen up and running on my windows laptop and it is a good learning experience. There is a step by step tutoirial on how to get the andoid kitchen installed and how to build roms.

Yeah, I've got the kitchen running on an Ubuntu VM on my PC. I've only used it for my inc though. I guess what I hadn't realized was that Samsung never released the code for our device. Its a shame, I wish I would have looked that up before I decided on this tab. Do any other Samsung devices have similar architecture, besides the already mentioned 7.7?

Yeah doing these kind of posts will get you just yelled at :S so don't but if you want an opinion on what you would like based on what you want try the Nocturnal MergeX. Though still customisable, Nocturnal is designed to work out of the box with little effort, making it a good choice for those who would rather leave most of the effort to the experts.
So give it a try

Hi All,
Please help me to find the APM Mod for my ATT HTC One X running on Clean ROM 6.5 (Based on 3.17 base).
I have searched in the XDA threads but they are not for ATT HOX.
Thanks in Advance!!
Thanks and Regards,

It has to be ported over. I actually want this and notification toggles too. Anyone know how to port them?
Sent from my HTC One XL using Tapatalk 4
Not sure exactly, but there's apps from the Play Store that offer notification toggles. Not the same, but you can use quick boot to boot in recovery and such. There's likely not going to be an available mod for it, because CleanRom ended development for our device.
Sent from my evita
APM requires smali code, xml files and png images to be added to framework-res.apk and code added and edits to android.policy.jar and toggles require smali code, xml files and png images in the systemui.apk. You will need to decompile them first. It is a quite involved proccess.

Here is what I did and how I started to learn about these mods.
Google the app beyond compare and download it.
I'm assuming you know how to use apk tool if not there is enough info around that I'm not going to get into explaining that.
Find a Rom that has the mod your looking for. Make sure the Rom are on the same version ie 4.1.1.
Decompile the modded apk and the one from the Rom you want to add to.
Open beyond compare and select a folder compare add the entire decompiled folder for both apks and go through and look at the difference between the two apks. There are different ways you can choose to make the compares I usually choose binary compare to get the most accurate look at the diffs.
Some things related to the mod will be easy to find others will take a little longer.
Make the the edits to your unmodded apk and compile it and test it.
If it fails to compile or doesn't work when installed on phone then you missed something go back and go through it again.
It is a trial and error process but this is how I learned.
It should be noted most of these mods took someone quite a while to actually code from scratch with no reference so using it for your own personal use is fine but if you plan on publicly releasing it do the right thing and make sure you get permission from the original creator before making anything public that you did not make yourself.
Hope this helps.
