A couple of days ago I tried to install the SGS 3D gallery Mod and I found out that I had some problems. I thought it was because of the Mod , but now after all I have tried to fix it I think I just noticed it after running the Mod.
The problem I am having the Cappy will not see scan any of my media files on either SD card.
Please read on and see if anyone can help.
I dont think it actually has anything to do with the Gallery Mod, unless it could some way damage my internal SD (which I dont beleive).
Heres where I stand now.
1) Took my sdcard out and tried it in another Cappy. Perfect, everything is scanned right away and shows perfect in the Gallery and Player.
2) Next flashed back to stock, installed SD card and again PERFECT. All files on either card show right away. (BTW now I think I am fixed GRRRRRRRRR)
3) Did a master clear , rooted, re-flashed Cog 3.04. Worked for a couple of files the first time I booted, then Nothing!
4) Thought it may have something to do with the LagFix, removed that, Nothing.
5) thought I may have a bad download so I do the whole process over with Cog 4.1.1 At first it let me copy a few files to the internal SD from the External and it found them! (again thought I was getting somewhere)
6) Now I thought it may have something to do with the External SD , even though it worked on another Cappy. Formatted , re-installed. STILL Nothing!
7) Along the way I formatted the Sys Drive thru CWM. Nothing
8) Thought it may be the Internal SD card so I copied all the files to the Computer and formatted that drive. Copied files back. It let me copy one folder from the external SD (Yet again I thought I did it) Then tried to copy more to it . NOTHING
9) OUT OF IDEAS HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPP
A few things I did notice along the way:
1) The SD Cards are always able to view the pictures and videos from a file viewer.
2) never have any write or read erros moving files
3) After just about every big step it seems to work a little the first transfer, then dead
4) If I take a new picture from the camera or record a new video, it will always show up right away, But if make a change those files will not be seen again???
5) Tried to Clear the cashe on the media storage app and also un-mounted and remounted the SD card over and over NG. Also removed the ext SD, didnt matter
6) Probably the most important thing I did notice is that the "media Scanner" tries to scan and it usually gets stuck at 0% for a few seconds then the phone will vibrate and it will go away. This will happen a few times in a row every time it tries. It knows it should be looking but it seems it cant read the drives. Every now and then it will scan a little more but it seems like it gets kicked along the way?
I am at a real loss at what would or could stop the scanner from working , when the drives seem to work fine?
Maybe someone with some real knowledge of how these phones actually work will know what could be happening.
To recap I have tried
Stock 2.1 and it worked fine.
Cog 3.04 NG w/ LagFix and without LagFix
Cog 3.04 with SpeedMod NG
Cog 4.1.1 NG
Cog 4.1.1 with SpeedMod NG
The only the only thing I think may be happening is that for some reason the LagFix is causing some strange problem and even after removing it it is still hurting something unknown? The reason I even think this is that Stock 2.1 worked.
BTW this phone was working perfectly up to the other day when I installed the Gallery Mod. I think I probably had a problem a couple of days before but didnt know it.
I am not sure where this post should actually be moved to but I am going to post a copy of this on its own here.
Thanks for everyone that has helped me already and to anyone that can help me figure this out.
may be try other roms. firefly, torch or serendipity

So I flashed my Captivate back to stock using Odin and then flashed Cognition. Everything seems to be working fine again except my phone locks up every time I try to access the SD card. It usually happens whenever I open gallery but also sometimes when I'm in a game or some other application. I can still access it fine through a computer and it doesn't look like I have any corrupted files but it just keeps on locking up my phone. I tried reflashing Cognition and that didn't help. I'm wondering if it's a problem with the SD card even though I've never had any problems before because I've done countless restarts and battery pulls today so it's possible something got corrupted. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Does it have the standard directory where you store your photo/films?
or
Did you try to reformat (FAT32) it? Then take a few pictures (so it does create the stanard directory/~ies). Seems to me it's missing some..
Senax
I finally fixed it by going all the way back to stock and reflashing everything. I think it may have have had something to do with the overclocked version of Cognition I was running or perhaps a theme I installed. I was pretty sure it wasn't an issue with the SD card as nothing was corrupted and I could access it fine on my computer. Either way it works again now!
just as a future reference.. you should ALWAYS backup your SD card to your PC considering SD cards DO fail. I lost almost 4.5gb of info because my memcard was corrupted and I had to start collecting all over again (+ i lost something like 600megs of cell pics).
I've been using Dexter's froyo v1.3 for a week or two now, with basically no real issues. About 3 days ago or so, when I powered on my phone - you know how the sd card symbol appears in the status bar right when u turn on phone, it's loading sd card - so I see that symbol, but unlike how it usually is, it doesn't go away after a second (after it's loaded). So I pull down status bar and the icon says "checking for errors" and it doesn't go away at all. SD card just won't load. Oh I should mention -just remembered - I turned it on and I got "error with sd card, you may have to reformat" (or something like that) right before and then it just changed to "checking for errors" after I took out the sd card and reinserted.
Anyways, so my SD card isn't loading, right. I figured it might have something to do with the fact that I was using the SD card that came with it which is low class (2). I tried putting it in an SD card reader and put into my computer and it showed up and worked with no issues. But it just wasn't working on my XT720. So what I did was, I happened to have an extra micro SD card lying around (this one class 4) and I put it into the XT720. It worked just fine. That was a few days ago.
A few hours ago, I was using my camcorder on XT720. After using for quite a while I got "sd card not present, sd card must be present to use camcorder". I left the application and went to settings and my sd card was registered as present. I then went to gallery but I got the same "sd card not present" thing. My phone felt very hot at the time, which I assumed because I was using it for a while. I figured it might be an issue of overheating causing weird things. So I decided to power off my phone for a while and see what happens.
Upon turning on my phone, I was greeted with the SD card icon in the notification bar and upon pulling down; "Checking for errors". Now this new SD card won't load.
This is a really big issue for me, because I really need the SD card for stuff. Both SD cards seem to work fine in SD card reader on PC. Please let me know how I can fix this...
(sorry for making this so long, just wanted to have all info available).
....
Apparently this looks like a huge, long unresponded to issue for many people and not specific to Dexter's Froyo: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=2500
I'm going to try some of the solutions people posted, but problem seems unfixed for majority of users .
Gaaaaaah. My Android experience has been plagued with far too many issues....
What sucks is that if I want to flash back to stock to try to use warranty, I'm going to have issues if I need an SD card....
It seems you've already determined the issue, you have excluded the SD card(s) as the source of the problem. This leaves one thing - your phone is defective.
Flash it back to stock and send it in for service.
This issue has absolutely nothing to do with what software is on your phone.

You don't need the sdcard to flash a stock SBF with RSD lite.
I kept having same problem. If u are using move 2 SD or anything like that select auto and not Justin external I had to reformation my card about 3 times b4 I figured it out. Dexter posted somewhere not to use these apps.
similar issue with sd card
The only problem I've had with my sc card is that most of the time after my phone has been rebooted, the sd card will show up as not present once the phone has completely finished booting. Sometimes I can just reboot again and it will pick up on it but usually what I have to do is shut it down, remove the card, start it up and then once it indicates the sd card is not present I can reinsert and it loads just fine. I have an 8gb class 4 that came with the phone.

I tried that once (it was something mentioned in that link I posted) but it didn't work. I'll probably try it out again before attempting to use warranty.
I would also try reformatting the sdcard, just because Windows can read it doesn't mean there aren't issues with the card.
K, so I put it in SD Card reader and into PC and began transferring all the files on the card to a new folder. During this process I got a pop-up a bunch of times telling me specific files were corrupted and unreadable and couldn't be transferred (mostly music filer for the most part). I then formated the card to delete the remaining corrupted stuff. Now put into phone and it registers as being there and now things like camera are working.
Gonna have to see how it fares when stuff are actually on the card, but for now things are looking good.
Thanks for the help guys, will update if I encounter further problems.
EDIT:
And after transferring some music on to it, it still seems to be working fine. Needless to say, I'm quite happy I don't have to go through the hassle of flashing stock and then trying to get a device exchange for warranty...
Though I am slightly worried that the device itself will corrupt things again (since my other SD card also worked fine for a few days). But I did also do a complete factory reset so perhaps there was some app causing issues that no longer will... Guess we'll see what happens.
I had problems with my stock (Cincinnati Bell) SD Card doing a similar thing -- showing up as no card inserted. Sometimes rebooting did the trick in fixing it. Then my phone fried and quit working. I thought it was related.
After I received a new (refurb) from Motorola as a warranty replacement, I used that same card and was getting the same error. So I upgraded to a new 32GB class 4 card and still got the error. I upgraded to Dexter's ROM and it still continued. I'd keep rebooting (three to four times sometimes) and eventually it would go away.
Then I decided to pull everything off the card, reformat & give it an ext3 partition using the method in the video tutorial in these forums. I haven't had the issue since -- it's been about a week now.
So I've been having this issue for about a week now. All the apps installed on my phones SD card once I reboot are not loading up. I know the data is still there because the first time that it happened I spent the better part of day freaking out thinking everything was gone gone. At some point I thought of checking of the data by plugging in into the computer. Turns out (1) all the apps miraculously return (2) I can't mount the SD card anymore (3) I can't unmount the SD card anymore either.
What is the deal? It's kind of annoying to lost everything every time you reboot. I'm not really in the mood to tether my phone each time for the unforeseeable future just to keep everything loaded. Has this happened to anyone before? What should I do?

What do you mean, the icons? I'm going to assume that's what you're referring to, for this reply...
If that's what you meant, icons on the home screen take a few seconds to get themselves drawn, if apps are on SD.
You can switch to a different skin then switch back to your original skin, to get them to redraw. Or delete/reposition them one at a time. It's a workaround, but changing the skin temporarily is faster.
It's a sense bug, I'm pretty sure.
Doesn't happen if apps are installed on the phones internal storage, so until they fix it, move your apps onto internal storage, if you don't want to deal with this each time you reboot. They run faster if they're not on your SD anyway.
Unless you have waaaay more apps than you really need, of course.
Sorry should've been a little more specific. The shortcuts on my home screen are all no longer working and I'm well aware of how long it takes for sense to load them up on startup but even when I go to display all apps it only displays the apps on internal storage. In fact each and every app on the card (in the apps settings) has a funny icon that has a little "sd" on it now and just says computing and will not load.
And since writing this I can no longer get the phone to load any apps from the sd card by tethering it to the computer. It's still accessible - just downloaded today's song from amazon and played it - but apps on it are almost like they're gone.
This happens to me sometimes too. But usually when it happens to me I can go into Settings - Applications - Manage Applications and move the troublesome app to internal storage, and then it's fine. It never completely disappears.
It might do you some good to reformat your SD card. Move everything off of it first, then format it, then put everything back on.
Is it the stock 8GB SD card, or a different one?

Sold, since I can no longer access the SD card and I've got nothing to listen to at work...

Yup.
@homeslice976 copied, formatted (made sure it was FAT32), copied everything back and no dice. Same symptoms, Apps will not load.
@zuriken I don't know why you asked about the stock SD card or not, do you think it needs to be replaced? It's only been since February.

Did you do a full, not quick format? Scan for bad sectors/errors?

full format, chkdsk /f, still nothing though. This is honestly getting to the point where I'm tempted to switch to another phone. Why can't I access my stuff?
Another new bonus, every time I get some sort of alert it now plays random MP3s from the SD card. What is going on...

I'd try a brand new, good quality SD card before resorting to switching phones.
Have you flashed any custom roms or anything? I didn't see you mention either way.

It's gonna be a little while until I can try a new SD card but I'll get back to you.
The only ROM I loaded was the one to originally root that removed the uploading cap from ATT.
I also solved where the random sounds were coming from apparently it doesn't want to play my selected theme and no matter what I do the only one that works is the original HTC default 2010 one or if I download any only the Celesta theme plays... I have a sinking feeling that copying all this funky data isn't going to resolve anything but I'll give it a go.

Good luck.
Since you haven't been messing with multiple roms and such, I don't know what else it could be, other than the SD card taking a dump.
Hi guys,
I've been having this problem for quite some time now. I first noticed this when I shifted from one custom ROM (SAGA LBC) to another (CyanogenMod 7.1). At first, my phone kept resetting after a reboot. At first, I thought it was an incompatible ROM. For a time, wiping cache and dalvik cache via the recovery interface did the trick. But then, it just got worse and worse. I eventually reverted back to LBC, thinking that it might be Cyanogen. But, as it turns out, my phone still kept resetting. Even as mundane a task as going to the settings menu freezes up my phone, requiring me to reset, sometimes even by pulling out the battery. I tried doing the wiping of the caches again, bit it never became effective.
Then I read somewhere that Andoid seems to be uber sensitive to file corruptions and defragmentation of the microSD card, so I defragged the SD, fixed the permissions, and deleted the LOST.DIR and tmp folders. Everything went smoothly at first, but then after a couple of days, my phone kept rebooting again. To verify that it was the microSD at fault, I removed it for the mean time. Since then, my phone hasn't frozen nor rebooted.
One other thing: whenever I check the microSD via Windows (right click --> Properties --> Tools), everything seems to be in order as Windows can't detect anything wrong. Right now, I've ran chkdsk :f /f /r on the drive, but Windows says that everything is fine. I haven't reinstalled the microSD yet, as I want to run a more thorough test before I do.
Have any of you encountered this? Could you guys give me suggestions on what to do, a better tool than chkdsk, etc? I can buy another card, but I don't want to do that just yet. My microSD is 32GB, and I don't want to just throw it away or something
So i was on a call the other day, finished the call and backed out of phone app. Then i saw "sd card removed unexpectedly" in notification bar. So i go to check card through astro and says card not mounted. If i go to settings>sd storage and hit mount card, it just grays out the option. The card is still readable in my laptop and doesnt contain any errors. I formatted a fresh card and put that in and same thing. I've tried wiping, factory reset, reflashing rom, all with same results. Card will not mount in recovery either.
Just cant figure it out. Is it a hardware issue? Software? Why all of a sudden?
For the record i'm running sky raider 1.3. I had the darkhorse theme on there until the day before when i reflashed the rom due to a font color thing i didnt like. The only other thing i did was went into the build.prop file and changed the call screen from 3.0 to 2.1 to avoid the call screen bug. Which i did previously when installing skyraider.
I did do a search and couldn't find any results to be helpful to my situation. If anyone can help please let me know.
I dont know if this will help you or not, but my buddy bought a tbolt from craigslist, and it absolutely would not read the sd card either. I even took it apart just to check the slot etc. Eventually i exhausted everything I could think of and ended up running an RUU. For some reason that fixed it.... Good luck.
Thanks, i'll consider it. But flashing anything without an sd crad is a pain in the ass!
