The internal storage of the Nexus S acts exactly like a MicroSD card would. The software reads the non-phone storage partition as a separate entity and so no, your personal stuff stored on the "SD card" will not be touched by doing the pre-rom wipes.

Non Root Users: SD Card can create major issues if not kept up with

Ok so I have a samsung class 10 16Gb micro SD card in my sensation 4g, and as of the last 2 weeks I thought my phone was breaking and needed a new one because the old one kept restarting while trying to use navigation, pictures weren't loading in the gallery, and certain apps would just randomly force quit.
After 2 weeks of dealing with the crap and trying to fix it myself, went and got T-mobile to send me a warranty replacement, and In order to prep for my new device I decided to wipe my card and keep only pictures and music, because it was about 1.52 Gb from being full and I didn't know why the SD Maid app wasn't cleaning out the junk data from previous apps.
In the end with the newly formated memory card my phone works like new, so the warranty replacement is just going to help, because this one had a small screen scratch. Anyone noticing the similar symptoms to the stuff in bold should try to format their memory card, and do a factory reset, it might help
Thanks for the information! This is good to know. I also discovered something with the sd card, I also noticed similar symptoms on a cheap sd card I had got.then I had recently purchased a new one and it was a trusted brand and when I put it I'm my device the symptoms were gone! There is definitely something to this! Bottom line is best to buy a good trusted brand of sd card and not the bargain brand or it could cause trouble!

i had to repartition and reformat mine sd-card,
after 4EXT has told me partitions aren't alighned.
there are tools section in 4EXT anyone can check sd-card with
Thank you SO much, Guy. I've been having those exact same issues to a T. I was getting frustrated with having to find pictures via Astro, not gallery, and last night I got lost because Google Nav kept rebooting my phone. I was ready to huck it out the window. I will try this, and hope it helps!

[Q] MicroSD card use locked S3 i535

*let me just start with a big thanks to the XDA community, you guys rock!*
I started my droid journey with the Droid2, the Droid2 Global.....now, just this weekend, I've updated the vaulted Galaxy S3 i535 16gb verision
Now, the situation I'm seeing is that the microSD care is not letting me interact with it as I expect
I'm unable to make folders
Clicking n dragging items to it are failing, getting access denied errors
My question is simple: is the phone 'forcing me' to use the internal memory prior to using the card memory
I prefer to keep all my audio and pics on the card, not really looking to ROM it. Superadmin access is set
I've seen the threads about unlocking it,but have also seen the issues with the current version from Verizon as well
droid v 4.0.4
carrier VZW
baseband version I535VRLG7
thanks in advance for any feedback
You need to format your card to fat32

I had already did the formatting on it, that's why I'm puzzled about it not working
I've taken my 8gb card from my droid, removed all content but the lost.dir and am using that temporarily.
What size is your card that youre having issues with? And formatting thru the phone doesn't switch it to FAT32 if that's in fact why it's not working for you.
32GB card, and yes I know how the box it won't format. what's puzzled me is that the 8gb card, same maker, coming out of my droid2 works fine.
Have you tried formatting it using the tool that's floating around?

Internal SD Card

Hi basic question regarding my internal sdcard.
Im having an issue and was told I should format my sdcard (I dont have an external sd).
I hooked my phone up via USB and opened it with windows explorer. I see my device and see "Internal Storage", which contains every folder within it. I dont see something specific for "sdcard" and Im unsure how to find it. Is the entire "Internal Storage" folder what Im looking for? Is that what I should completely back up on pc, format and then repopulate? Im nervous about bricking the phone so want to confirm this...
Thanks.
The internal memory is the sd card referred to. You will lose all of your data.

Thanks for the reply. So if I first copy every folder here onto my PC, format it and then put all those folders back, should I expect the phone to restart without any problem and everything fully intact?

thanks really appreciate this guidance.
i know it seems obvious, but doing it your first time is scary so its really helpful to get affirmation that my understanding of what may seem basic and obvious is correct
Haha I know that feeling, first time I tried to root a phone I almost bricked it probably one of my scariest moments. YouTube helps a lot, there's plenty of step by step guides on how to do pretty much everything to your phone.

[Q] Swap File, External Apps Partion, etc.

Hello people,
I got my Xperia L a couple of days ago and I have it running successfully with Vengeance + Clean n Tweaked after a loooot of tries.
This is my first Android phone after HTC Wildfire! Loving it so far [Was uber slow out-of-the-box though]
Anyway I want to know how beneficial it is to create a swap file on the External SD card and use it. Does it make a big difference in performance? If yes how do I achieve this?
Secondly I really want to be able to move user apps to External Storage. I tried moving them from within the Clean Master app and it did work BUT when I restart my phone the Xperia Home(launcher) app keeps crashing(until the SD card is initialized I guess). The easy fix is to open the notification bar or something for a minute before going back into to the Home Screen. So yes this kinda works. Just want to know if there's a better way.
One idea comes to mind is making a separate ext2/3/4 partition on the External SD Card and using that for user apps. Will the home launcher still crash? I really don't want to use a custom launcher. If this is possible how do I do it?
I read about the mod to make External memory as Internal. Does everything work correctly with that? However if partitioning is possible I would prefer that as opposed to using the whole External SD Card as internal memory.
Lastly, since I don't have 10 posts yet I can't post to DEV threads yet so I want to thank people from about 10 to 15 different threads which I referred to in the last 24 hours. lol!
p.s. I have a SanDisk 32GB Class 10 Micro SD Card
Bump!
I think what you searching for is Link2SD

Thanks for the reply. I read all about the app and I think It MIGHT cause trouble at some point so I'm gonna stay away from it for now. Maybe when I want to play a HUGE game I'll use it. Good to know how to!
Anyone wants to shed some light regarding the swap file question?
Bump

What is wiping my external SD card ?

For the 2nd time in a week, I've got my SD card entirely reformatted by itself, and lost all my docs, photos, mp3... Not fatal, because I have backups...
But I'm extremely mad at my Android (Samsung Galaxy A6 plus 2018, not rooted), as I can't understand how a SD card can get wiped out by itself and, I think, while on screen off. What app could have done that?
I've read that the card could be hardware faulty , but It worked perfect in my previous Note 4 android for a year, and never gave me trouble.
I also need some advice on recovering docs from the card, as I've lost my most recent photos. Thanks.
