[Q] CM7 / Kernel question - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, new here. Sorry but i just wanted to ask if im currently on CM7 nightlies #11 and im upgrading to CM7 nightlies #12, do i need to wipe anything?
secondly, if im on CM7 nightlies #11 and 1.2.7 netarchys cfs kernel and im switching to honity's kernel do i need to wipe anything?

No to wiping but if you encounter bugs then you should wipe all three.
If you go from one rom to another you'll have to wipe.
Kernels don't need to wipe. But if you flash a new rom you need to reflash the kernel because the rom will override your kernel.

[Q] [i9020-T] Trinity UV Kernel Flashing

Hey everyone I'm kinda new to the whole kernel flashing business and I'm trying to flash the UV Trinity kernel to my Nexus S. From what I've read I only need to flash the zip from recovery without having to do any sort of wiping. The main problem when I tried this is that the phone went into a boot loop and wouldn't go past the boot animation for the kernel. I'm not sure if it's because the kernel is based off of 2.3.4 and I'm currently running CM-7.0.3. Morfic's thread indicated that the kernel was made for CM7 so I don't know what's going wrong here.

You have a ROM based on 2.3.3, meaning it's not compatible with a kernel made for 2.3.4.
Try flashing the latest cm7 and then the kernel.

Would it work if I tried a CM7 variant that's based off of the 2.3.4 source? I'm going for a stable phone and unsure about the nightly builds at this point. If not I'll probably just wait CM to update and release the rom.

it should work on any 2.3.4 cm based roms.

For the latest nightly u need to flash faux's 0.4.4 or morfic's one for nightly 174 +

I guess for that rom u should try 0.4.3
Wipe cache, clean dalvik cache, flash kernel - make sure is a good one, fix permission, reboot

Looks like Faux released a beta kernel for 7.1.0.1

About custom kernels

I am a complete noob and I am so confused. I want to install the matr1x kernel. Do I have to have a custom rom? I don't really want a custom from. HELP

Are you unlocked and rooted with clockwork mod? You'll need to be first.
Flashed matrix kernel over stock ics myself a while back and worked fine. Just wipe dalvik cache in recovery first though.
Sent from me to you via the tinternet thingamebob.
I have done that.
Will I lose any data. Btw. Which version? Cfs or bfs.
What kernel do you recommend.

You shouldn't lose any data. CFS is aimed at multi-tasking, and BFS is more aimed at single-tasking, games, etc. CFS is everday normal use. If you do heavy gaming or other heavy single process stuff then go for BFS.
I hope this clarifies it some for you.
Matrix kernel is fine.
Also make sure you are flashing the correct Kernel for either GB or ICS. 11.5 I think is the latest for GB and 17.5 for ICS.
Successful

[Q] Overclock with cm7.2 rom

for the longest time I have tried to OC my g2x without any luck. Probably the reason why it never OC was because I ran on the Cm7 generation roms. But because there was a recent update (cm7.2) I'm wondering if someone has figured out how to overclock with this rom.
Current phone stats:
Kernal: 2.6.32.55-cyanogenmod [email protected]
Rom: cyanogenmod 7.2.0 RC1 p999
Perhaps I can flash a new kernal that you guys can recommend and OC my phone.

need new kernel. please help

Ok, so I'm running cm7.2 and Ive used Trinity and faux123 kernels but when I'm trying to play modern combat 3 the frame rate is choppy and the game lags. This doesn't happen on the stock root or stock kernel. I was wondering if there where any other good kernels that are great for running games with heavy graphics and will run the game smoothly like the stock root kernel or if there is, can someone help me find a stock g2x kernel that has been ported for cm7. Thanks

are you undervolting or overclocking?
ive used many a trinity and faux kernel, and solely use faux 54 for my daily driver, and mc3 plays perfect for me.
it has to be a tweak or rouge app causing the issue.

Well on the faux123 and Trinity kernels I have to overclock for the game to run smoothly but it overheats and at 1-1.2ghz its lagging and frame rate seems to be low. but on stock root and stock kernel at 1ghz the game runs smoothly and no lag. Immaterial try the newest faux kernel vs54 what rom and kernel are you using so I can check and see if my rom is the issue. Thank you ill post back if the updated kernel doesn't do the trick.
My setup? Look down. Lol
Are there any other tweaks or performance settings you are using?
I'd install the rom in my signature, with no kernel, no tweaks, go right to running mc3 and see what happens.
Make sure you are wiping in CWM :
Factory/Data Reset
Format cache
Format dalvik cache
Format system partition
Than flash ROM and gapps.
Test that first.
