I was looking for backlightnotification and ended up flashing i9000_BacklightNotification_v1.6.zip and after the BLN Control app told me it wasn't supported I realized that kernal wasn't for my phone. I'm i897.
Current Kernal is showing 2.6.29 [email protected] #163
It booted up fine, and so far have not noticed any problems, but I'm worried.
How do I get back to the stock kernal for Eclair? Build number is ECLAIR.UCJH7
Or should I not worry?
I have a recent Titanium backup if I can get it from there.
Thanks.

Okay so here's the deal. I had a new Captivate and upgraded to Cognition 2.1.4. I now see that Cognition 2.2 Beta is out with Froyo. Whats the easiest way to go along with the upgrade? Could someone type me a quick "How-To"?
I searched on the Cog FAQ Site, as well as some threads here on XDA, but I'm still unsure of the whole ordeal... I just don't want to fudge anything up.
Firmware Version: 2.1 -update1
Baseband Version: I897UCJH7
Kernel Version: 2.6.29 atin(at)thor #Voodoo_lagfix_3.0_v1.9
Build Number: Cognition v2.1.4
Thanks,
Zane
How do you make it to the download links and miss every instruction??

Well do i need to revert back to JF6 or whatever using ODIN One-Click? Cause I figured at first since its going from Cog to Cog, all I need to do is Install From SD Card through Rom Manager, but that didn't seem to work, and only gave me an error. Then I had to nandroid back to Cog 2.1.4
rom manager does not work with our 2.2 build. easiest way is flash back to 2.1 then use rom manager to go to cog 2.2. read the full guide on his site.
I'm on 2.1. Cog 2.1.4 is for 2.1. When you say 2.1, do you mean JF6 Odin One-Click?
disable lagfix on your current cog rom then flash with rom manager.
Alrite kmerrick, i'll try that out now.
very VERY glitchy/slow/buggy at the moment. i guess i will try restarting the phone. and possibly installing OCLF
9:52PM - Much MUCH quicker after restart

I had the same issue.
Today I did a 1-click and then root/rom manager (SRE1.2) then installed 2.2b4
Today is WAY faster and most smooth compared to yesterday.
Can someone explain to me how kernel's work and if I flash one will I be able to get rid of it? Say flash a stock one? Someone please explain.
Make a nandroid before flashing the kernel

The kernel provides the subsystem on which the OS itself operates. It is the interface to the physical hardware, handling access to physical devices as well as memory management. An optimized kernel can make a significant difference over a "vanilla" configuration.
Make a nandroid before you flash any kernels to go back easily. Otherwise you could reflash the full 2.3.3 rom.
thank you guys
If you're using CM7 and want to flash a kernel over it. You can just reflash CM7 without wiping anything and it would override your kernel with stock. CM7 includes stock kernel in it.
Yarr when I upgraded from 2.3.2 to CM7 RC1, my netarchy 1.2.5 resetted back to stock as I lost my Overclock. I just wasn't sure it was a stock kernel or a modified one specifically for CM7 that happened to not have an OC.

or about phone it says #google
Hi guys,
I wanted to use the "Back Light Notification" which I understand requires a kernel that is supported.
I have not rooted my phone ... just updated manually to 2.3.4. Would it therefore be possible to change my kernel without rooting?
I'm on a NS from the US ... that's a i9020 I presume. The about screen shows baseband as I9020XXKD1 and the kernel version as 2.6.35.7-ge382d80
been trying all the ones from kernel manager just for grins, found nothing would really like to know as well
root is required to change your kernel because you are overwriting system files. by default, it is set to "read-only" and the only way to make it "overwritable" is to get root access to your phone.
why not root your phones? its a lot better than stock.
I doubt so, you'll probably need to root your phone anyway.

No, you don't have to be rooted to flash a kernel but you need a custom recovery e.g. clockworkmod. Just make a nandroid backup of your current ROM, copy it to your PC just in case, then experiment away!
Hi everyone.
First I would like to thank everyone here for the guidance I have found on the forums, very helpful.
Second, although I am new to the forums and Android, I do know a little about Linux, kernels and roms, and the like
I am running romracers Alien rom 6 and love it. I have also flashed his latest "AT&T Stock-ish 0.3" kernel successfully (according to CPU-Spy and the screenshots provided on the thread) and the "fixed UCLA3 radio" (which was flashed BEFORE the kernel). Where Im confused is that the Build Number in the About Phone section, still shows "Gingerbread.UCKK1.AL6".
I was under the impression that flashing the new kernel would update the Build Number to the UCLA3 designation. But apparently I'm mistaken.
So I guess my question is, (and I have tried to search) what is the Build Number based off of? The ROM? The kernel? or ?. Im not having any issues with my phone. The question is more for my (and anyone else's) knowledge. Or If I have done something wrong during the flash, how to correct it.
Thanks again for all the hard work from everyone.
My understanding/ experience when flashing roms/kernels/modems:
Baseband version is the radio/modem on the phone. If for example, you flash the UCLA3 modem, your Baseband version should change to “I727UCLA3”
Kernel version is exactly that… my About phone shows “2.6.35.11”, and my CPU-Spy shows more detail to the kernel on the phone (for example, mine is Linux version “2.6.35.11-I727UCLA3-CL910433……” (with additional gcc version info and date/time of the actual kernel creation).
Build number: reflects the build of the ROM. In my case, since I flashed the UCLA3 rom silver03wrx created (from the UCLA3 ATT OTA system dump), mine shows “GINGERBREAD.UCLA3”. If you flash his or another developer’s custom roms, it would reference when they named the build.
Hope that’s correct and helps.

Makes perfect sense. Thanks for clearing that up for me. My baseband is what I expected it to be (UCLA3), just was not sure the kernel flashed completly/correctly
I had previously ran some custom ROMs (Cyanogen, etc) on my G2x, but this past year I had gone back to the stock 2.3.4 ROM. I did leave my phone rooted.
Recently I had decided to give my phone to someone else and wanted to do a factory reset to get rid of my info.
I followed the steps on the T-Mobile support site.
I held down on the volume while turning it on.
After a second I got the "S/W Upgrade" screen.
I left my phone alone for a while, but the screen never went away. After unhooking it my phone seemed bricked.
I followed the following guide to fix it and it restored my phone to 2.3.3:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1248644
The phone seemed to work fine, but all of a sudden I started hearing clicking.
I decided to try to update to 2.3.4, but my phone is a refurbished phone and won't do the OTA update.
I downloaded the LG driver and tool to try to update, but it said my phone already had the latest update. It detects my software version as V21Y when it's actually V21e.
Here is more of my phone info.
Model number:
LG-P999DW
Android version:
2.3.3
Baseband version:
M6600A-SCAUTNZ-2.0.9720T 1 [MAR 11 2012 10:00:00]MP:TRUGLE_08.09.02R_MDM
Kernel version:
2.6.32.9
Build number:
GRI40
Software version:
LG-P999-V21e
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Flash this in CWM to fix the audio: http://www.mediafire.com/?8spjkaknyg5bd30
You have the 2.3.3 software installed which doesn't have the audio files working for the baseband that comes with the 2.3.4 update

Hey. Thanks for the reply.
Is there a way just to flash a working 2.3.4 rom?
Also, when I install this fix, do I just keep the files zipped and keep it at the root of my sd card when I run CWM?
I've been following step-by-steps so my grasp of the flashing process is tenuous at best.
Yes just pick select zip from external sd and flash away.
