(Q) Big DX Crystal - General Questions and Answers

Ok, so I just downloaded the Big DX Crystal theme, and was looking at the installation instructions for it, and I have some questions.
The instructions say simply to place the zip file on the SD card, boot into DX bootstrap, and apply zip.
Before I try this, I just want to be sure that the steps of making a backup of the current ROM, wiping user data and cache, installing zip, and rebooting aren't the ACTUAL correct steps. I've bricked a phone before from not following those exact steps, and I don't want to do it again. Or, is this process correct, with Big DX Crystal being more a theme than a ROM?
Also, MUST Liberty first be installed for this to work, or can I install it on top of Big DX Serenity or the stock ROM? I have both Liberty and Big DX Crystal saved on a flash drive and ready to install, but not until I'm absolutely sure of the correct way to install them.

Ok, so I successfully installed Liberty 1.5 and installed the Big DX Crystal theme on top of it (although it turns out I didn't need to download Big DX Crystal beforehand; it was included as a theme in the Liberty Toolbox). I'm having a couple of issues though. First, no more Motoblur! (Yes, I know most of you on here don't like it, but I do, especially its ability to sync with Facebook contacts). Secondly, no Backup Assistant! Thirdly, it seems not to be letting me set up my Yahoo email accounts. What gives?

[ROM] OmegaEVO v1.1 [[NEW 3.30.651.3 OTA]] [[Froyo 2.2]] Updated 11/15/2010

For my new ROM please go HERE
Installation instructions & other useful information
To install on your Evo:
1. Copy OmegaEVO_v1.0_by_Ricsim78.zip to the root of your SD card.
2. Shut off your phone and boot into recovery.
3. Do a full wipe (Data, cache, Dalvik, SD Ext.) Do it twice to be sure if you want to!
4. Install OmegaEVO_v1.0_by_Ricsim78.zip. It should take a few minutes to install.
5. Reboot the phone. It should take a long time to start up the first time. Please be patient!
6. If all goes well, enjoy your new ROM!
7. If not, start over from step 2 after pulling your battery.
To install a custom kernel: Let the ROM load up first and then reboot into recovery and wipe the cache and Dalvik. Then install the custom kernel and reboot.
To install a theme: Let the ROM load up first and then reboot into recovery and wipe the cache and Dalvik. Then install the theme and reboot.
How to backup and restore using Titanium backup Here is the method I use to backup my phone information before I wipe and install a new ROM
I backup my entire phone with a batch "Backup all user apps + system data"
Wipe and install the new ROM,
I open Titanium Backup (TB) and give it super user rights.
I hit "Updates?" in TB and make sure I am running the latest.
I hit "Problems?" in TB and make sure I am using Busybox 1.60
Hit menu and select batch
Select "Backup all new apps + newer versions of apps", if any.
Select "Restore missing apps with data"
Go over the list and make sure you are restoring only what you want
Hit run batch operation
After it completes, go back into TB and backup restore.
Restore contacts twice
Restore MMS twice
Restore Mail twice
If any of the 3 above do not take, do it again
Restart your phone
Verify mail, MMS, and contacts restored. If not, restore again.
Why Amon RA and not Clockwork recovery?
Clockwork does not wipe the Dalvik properly (if at all). I personally have had nothing but problems with both Clockwork and ROM manager
I have said countless times that if you use either of the above, it is at your own risk. Install Amon RA recovery and I bet any wiping/installing problems will go away.
If you already are using ROM manager, pick the option to install a custom recovery, choose Amon RA 1.8. If that option is greyed out, reinstall the latest Clockwork then install RA.
Note: Do not do a fix permissions with anything unless you need to, you can screw stuff up that way.
Trust me, the new ROM is devoid of problems (I have never tested a ROM this much before releasing it). If you experience any, it is either something you are doing wrong or incomplete wipes thanks to your recovery not doing it's job properly.
What is the proper method to install the ROM and other things (kernels, themes, and mods, etc.)
Lets say you want to add a kernel, a theme, and then a clock modification.
Nandroid first!
ROM: Wipe data, cache, Dalvik (twice), SD:EXT.
Install the ROM.
Let the ROM load up the first time.
Sign into your Google account
Let it sync
When the sync icon goes away, reboot into recovery.
In recovery, wipe the cache and Dalvik (twice)
Install the theme
Reboot
Let it load all the way up again.
Reboot into recovery
In recovery, wipe the cache and Dalvik (twice)
Install the kernel
Reboot
Let it load all the way up again.
Reboot into recovery
Wipe the cache and Dalvik (twice)
Install the clock MOD
Reboot
This is my method and works every time without issue. Obviously, to install another item, you would repeat the process.
Hope this both helps and clarifies.
Which kernels work with this ROM?
Any that are designed for a Sense ROM. This includes:
Netarchy's
Kingclick's
Hero Over's
Ziggy's
HTC's
Which kernel do you recommend to use?
I cannot recommend a kernel for you because each EVO reacts different. The best for my phone can be the worse for yours.
You have to try the different ones available and pick the one that works best for you. What I do is start with their latest and work your way down until you find one that works well. Then stick with it.
This also goes for overclocking, SetCPU settings, etc.
Which themes work with this ROM?
Themes make your phone look nice but can also add problems to an otherwise smooth running ROM. You can use any theme you wish, but Nandroid first and if anything is broken, please do not blame the ROM as it is the theme that added the problem.
This includes my older modded themes and any theme made for 3.29 and 3.30 OTA updates They may work or they may work but break things.
Using my theme avoids this problem. It matches with my ROM perfectly and breaks nothing. Also, my theme is optimized for maximum speed and reduces the overhead of a theme (most themes are not optimized and add a bunch of stuff which increases system overhead, reduces battery life and speed a bit). As an added perk, it is a small download.
Hey, what gives? How come this ROM is saying it is 3.30.651.2 when I thought it was the 3.30.651.3 OTA?
3.30.651.3 is NOT a full ROM, it is a kernel and a few other minor changes. This is why the OTA is 7 MB or less instead of 160+ MB like a ROM usually is.
There is no issue, this is the 3.30.651.3 update. Hence the HTC # 17 kernel. Notice the screenshot in the first post also says that mine has 3.30.651.2? That is because basically this is a bandaid for a recently released OTA. That is why the number went up in the last decimal place. A major update would be like 3.31.XXX.X
sounds good, any screenies?

Well, without recooking it or using a theme (which would take out my wallpapers) no. Let me see if I can come up with a better solution. If not I will re-cook it with a different battery icon.
EDIT: Replacement battery indicator included in the first post for anyone who does not like the circle battery indicator the ROM is cooked with.

That is the font from the Manup theme, I like it too
I added a link to download a recovery flashable battery indicator (changes battery to smooth with percentage) in the first post. This way you can keep the stock circular one or switch it if you do not like it. Choice is good!

Thanks for the compliments and I am glad you like. There is 4 custom wallpapers included, I found them from Desktop Nexus and resized them to fit the Evo screen (960x800) using Paint.net for Windows 7.
You should also check out the custom ring tones and notifications!

That was how this ROM was born, I liked almost all of the ones on the board, but none had the ringtones, notifications, or wallpapers I wanted.
Problem solved! Glad to see it is working for everyone as well. I had no problems with this ROM, think it helps that it is based off the OTA and not a custom ROM.
I will keep this ROM updated. Future plans is to come up with a Sense removed, AOSP element version and add more customizations. I also need to update some of the apps (TB, to name one). I kept some of the stock Sprint stuff in just so no one had problems updating the Voicemail or other Sprint apps left in.
Please rate the thread and let me know if there is anything I should include, change, etc. etc.

Sounds good man, hehe. Please let me know what you think and I hope you like this ROM.
I begin work on the next version of Azrael today, expect version 2.1 out soon, By Wednesday I should have it tested out and ready to go.
Known changes I am going to be making:
-all apps updated
-battery indicator changed to Smooth battery with percentage (far more useful than the one Azrael 2.0 is cooked with and so far the only complain heard about this ROM) *knock on wood*
-Another custom wallpaper or 3 thrown in for good measure
Whatever changes I make, I will of course note them in the release notes.
I also want to get some more theme options available, maybe modify some themes so they do not take out my custom wallpapers. That way you can make this ROM more how you want it to be as well.
I really hope everyone who tries this likes it, I know I am up there with some really good ROM makers here that have far more reputation, but so far everything has been positive and I hope that at least a few people find my work useful.
Lastly, I am glad to offer another ROM option and give back to a community that has given me much.

Questions from a NOOOOB

I have a bunch of questions, but here is where I'm at.
I had 2.2 stock OTA. I then used bootstrapper to place dr154's Deodex OTA 2.2 onto my phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794007
Next, I again used bootstrapper to put NexTheme on my phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=749692
Question 1: Are both the deodex OTA and NexTheme now on my phone, or did NexTheme replace the deodex OTA? If I were to load another Theme on, would all 3 coexist or would the other(s) be replaced?
Question 2: If I were to factory reset my phone, what would it revert to? Stock? dr154's deodex? Etc.
Question 3: If vzw released a system update, do I have to do anything to my phone before I receive it?
Now more questions regarding SYSTEM APPS.
Problem 1: MotoTorch was preloaded as a system app, as a part of either Deodex or NexTheme, assuming these coexist. When a new version came out in the market, I could not update to it, because it was a system app. Superuser, same thing, a newer version came out, couldnt get it, "installation unsuccessful".
Problem 2: Additionally, lots of the system apps aren't even recognized as installed by the market. So sometimes you won't even know if an update is available. This was the case with MotoTorch.
So I used the common solution that everyone uses and that I found with a little searching, I loaded adb and mounted /system/app as rw, then removed the apks. Then reinstalled them from the market. Then remounted /system/app as ro.
My question regarding system apps is this:
Question 4: What is the advantage of having an app be a system app?
Question 5: The stock system apps such as Amazon Mp3, or City ID - can I safely remove these? Which ones CANNOT be removed? When I did ls /system/app, there were a huge number.
Lastly, I am new, so I'm sorry if I missed it or could have search it or whatever, but I'm wondering....
Question 6: What is tranquility exactly? I see a lot of themes say they're based of tranquility? If I wanted it, where could i find the newest version? If I install a theme based off tranquility, and then a new version of tranquility comes out, can I reinstall tranquility on my phone, then reinstall the theme and will then the theme be using the newest tranquility?
Question 7: What are the advantages of being blur-less?
Question 8: Is xda the best place to find new themes? Or is there another more centralized site?
Thank you very much for any answers!!
just about everyone of your questions are answered somewhere on the web, but ill give it a shot anyways.
1. Themes only replace certain apks, (this is usually stated in the themers OP) so at times you are most likely going to have a merge of themes, sometimes you will notice it sometimes you wont.
for example, you load a new rom which has apks 1-20. Now you load a theme that has apks 1-6. next you decide to load theme 2 that has apks 1-4. then you load theme 3 with apks 1-2. so even though your main theme is is theme 3, you still have parts of 1 and 2.
2. I would avoid a factory reset, just keep a backup and a copy of the rom your on. And if need be boot to recovery and restore one of those.
3. Yes you would need to revert back to bone stock, best done with an sbf. Google it, that subject is beaten to death.
your using the term system app wrong.
1-2. if the apps were loaded and pushed to system/app they usually wont update. the apks should be in data/app.
when you did the mount/uninstall/install this loaded the apk to the proper data/app location.
4. again wrong terminology. consider system app an app that is either neccesary for phone to run or an apk that MUST be in system/app
5. google "remove droid x bloatware"
6. would take way to long to fully explain that. newest can be found on rom manager or TBH.
7. personal preference, plus less &%$# running in the background.
8. no centralized site, you can find different stuff on different sites. mydroidworld, droid-life, droidforums, droidxforums, etc.
thanks for your answers, but when i ls /system/app i see a lot of useless junk that I am pretty sure aren't required for the system...
the theme gave me mototorch to /system not /data
Here's the BIG question. Did you make your own nandroid back-up before you started this whole process? In other words- did you go into bootstrap recovery and create a back up of your phone first? and then do all this other stuff? Bc that is the easiest and number one way to return your phone to its factory settings. In fact- at this point it may be the only way. With 2.1 we had an SBF file which was essentially the original "rom image" (i come from windows mobile so forgive me). So if you were tinkering around or flashing roms and something happened - you could restore using the SBF to the factory state.
On 2.2 there is no complete SBF. Team Black Hat released a partial SBF they are calling a "system SBF" that can help people that have fubared their phone installing themes and what not. But i don't think it returns the phone to factory settings- I could be wrong since I am a complete newb to android.
So to make a long story even longer- that is why I asked if your remembered to make your own nandroid back up of your phone b4 you did all this stuff- so you have a way to return your phone to its original factory state. If you did not- then don't let it bother you. I have read many posts from seasoned android users that simply got excited and forgot to do it. Eventually - the SBF has to be leaked and we all can sleep a little easier.
I didn't make a nandroid backup. Thanks for letting me know about this, now I know not to try to revert until a true sbf comes out, you might have just saved me from bricking. I guess if an OTA comes out, and we still don't have an SBF, I'll just have to wait for a customized version of that OTA to be released.
Turns out the full SBF was released yesterday by the way:

Yes- this is confirmed lagitamate. So you are good to go. You can now restore to factory by downloading this sbf and using RSDlite (RSDLight? - can't remember).
So- didn't have to wait to long

how to remove skins older roms

so what happened is i tried to install the rom Tranquility but it did not work, so i tried installing 928Droid black glass theme first so that i would be deodexed and then i tried installing tranquility over it. and it did work. but one thing that is annoying is the ugly skin that black glass puts on the facebook and twitter widget is still there now that i have tranquility. but its not really a big deal but it makes facebook and twitter look really ugly, so i want to know if there is a way i can stay on tranquility and remove this ugly black glass facebook / twitter theme. will i have to wipe data. and the fb twitter skin is the only thing that stayed from when i flashed tranquility over black glass

If Im not mistaken, there should be a Deodexed version of Tranquility floating around. You will have to wipe but you can always do an advanced resore of data from your previous backup so you wont have to go through all that headache again. Have you tried any of the other blurless ROMs? Im on APEX and it is deodexed, blurless, and blazing fast. Maybe some of the Senior members can jump in and help us out with some feedback as well. Im a little curious now as to why you may still be having these problems.

So I've come up empty as well. Here is what I tested on my X and it worked. Downloaded the 2.2 OTA Deodexed here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794007
Then Grabbed the Tranquility download and Installed. Everything went off without a hitch.
Here are other people that had success as well.
http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/...ty-2-3-5rc-completely-deodexed-ota-2-2-a.html
Hopefully this at least points in the right direction.
FYI any version of TranQ is deodexed. and even if your /system is not deodexed it will deodex it for you.
IMO tho you are better off installing a deodex /system first then install TranQ over it. reaosn being is that wya you know you have a deodexed /system before hand just incase TranQ took a crap doing it during the install process.
BTW IMO there is no reason to wipe data when changing ROMs. I've tried and test just about every X ROM out there and have yet to wipe data on any install. There really is no reason to. All these ROMs are only touching /system and have nothing to do with the /data partition. It is not like back on the Droid where they were full custom ROMs when it was required to do so. The only time I'd wipe data is if you are having an issue otherwise it is not needed.

That is good to know. I think I have just been accustomed to doin the full wipe because of my old Droid. I also see a lot of the ROM developers request it.

[ROM] DI14 Pick-n-Pack 0.2 ROM

DI14_pick-n-pack_0.2 ROM for the Samsung Mesmerize
I have reworked this ROM to make it a little easier to work with. In the 0.2 version, you will be able to flash the main package without any need to add files like in the 0.1 version. As for the removed apk files, they are now flashable either individually or in packs depending on what they are. I felt this would be an easier way to still get what you want but not having to put things together before flashing.
I still recommend that you take a backup before you flash anything. I am not responsible for any damage you do to your phone while flashing any or all parts of this ROM. I also recommend that you download both the ROM and Addons at the same time so that you do not have to wait for a second download after you have already flashed the ROM.
Also, to be clear since there has been confusion, MMS is 100% functional in this ROM because it uses stock MMS, not AOSP.

Download the ROM and Addons. Unzip the Addons and decide which packs you want to flash. Put the ROM and individual Addons on your sdcard and boot into recovery. Flash the ROM first. Then you can flash the Addons individually. When you are done, reboot. If the phone hangs at the boot animation for more than 5 minutes, pull the battery, do three button to get back to recovery and do a data wipe/factory reset. Reboot and things should be fine.

Awesome! I'm reading up some more on how to flash these roms in and I plan on using this one. I'm new to this and just learning.
I installed ROM Manager and installed "flash clockworkmod recovery" (it said I had to) and then I clicked backup current ROM. I have tried twice, and it said failed each time.
I'm afraid to try it again, as I don't want to ruin my phone.
Any ideas?

Try going in to recovery by turning off the phone, hold the power and volume down button. Once in recovery, select apply sdcard:update.zip. That should get you get you to clockwork recovery. From there select install zip from sdcard and then choose zip from sdcard. Find the zip and flash it.
Let me know if that works.

If you've already done one backup, you're ok. If not, go ahead and do one.

I sent you a PM.
Everything works. Installed without a hitch, has all the programs gone that I wanted and kept the ones I wanted by switching them to the correct folder.

Thanks. That was my thinking. A lot of people were asking for apps to be put back in to jt's super clean ROM so I figured this was the easiest way that anyone could just drop in what they want and it would be custom tailored to their needs.
Since I've seen over 200 people look at the page but only 2 download the package, I'm thinking that there's got to be something to the hesitation. Feedback is welcome here, and encouraged. If this is too scary and people want something that they can just flash, throw some ideas out to me. I'm definitely open to suggestions.
I think the holidays may have something to do with it. Personally, I plan to use this once I get my phone rooted (for some reason z4root locks my phone up every time) But I want to wait until the rushing, travelling holiday is over because I cant go without my phone =)
I'm happy with the SuperClean Rom and Voodoo 5 right now, otherwise I'd have given this one a shot.
I'm still using this and I have had no issues. I like being able to choose which programs are going to be on my droid, instead of having all or none that I want.
I am getting same errors also..
I have done super one click..
Run Rom Manager and chose ROM it asks to reboot I get error.
When I choose SD update.zip it boots back into a image that has sceens that have black widgets.. All other Samsung and USSC stuff is still there as well as ROM Manager..

You have to do some work on the files to make ROM Manager working.
Get Clockwork Working
That will let you make the backup.zip and install from the SD card. Threw me for a loop as well.
One thing I do not want to lose or at least be able to find in another app is the SMART ALARM ..
I know... I got used to it in just a couple days. Love the way it sort of eased you awake instead of a full on GET UP..
So question would be. Which apk and dependencies would I need to keep and or anyone know of another app that would give me same with more options.

[Q] Quick question about fission themes

Alright so I've been looking around and some people have said to wipe all days when just installing a theme when one if already installed. Sim say to only wipe certain data and yet others say nothing is required. I have the fission 2.3 gingerbread theme on fission 2.4 and want to run a theme for 2.4. What should I do?
The easy way is to use Fission ROM Manager and install the straight Fission ROM over whatever theme, then intsall which ever theme you wish to switch too... This works great for me.
Another way is to reboot into clockworkmod go into backup and restore, then advanced, then choose a nandroid back up of the stock ROM, then select restore system. This takes long but will take most if not all of whatever theme you have installed.
Good luck, post if you have trouble.
